I really enjoy Chinese food and came from San Francisco where it is convenient to buy oriental Chinese cuisine. My coworkers said they like Lily Kai so I went and tried it. First of all the hot and sour soup was so dark I though they dumped an entire bottle of hot spices in there. The taste was way too strong too. Half of the soup went in along with half a kettle of tea. Not a very good choice of recipe. And not to mention when I was finally getting used to the strong taste, the waitress walked by after cleaning another table and just took my half bowl of soup away without even asking if I was done yet. I was digging through my bag for my phone and by the time I realized this, she was already walking inside the kitchen. When my food finally arrived after ten minutes of drinking only tea, the chow mein I ordered was dry on the inside. Seriously dry to the point where chewing it felt like I was eating moisten crackers. And there was a little too much oil everywhere. I only finished half and didn't ask for a take out. Then came the ever so famous Mongolian Beef. It was okay. Not fabulous to the point where I will drag people with me to go try it again and again, but at least it tasted like something finally. But the rice I got was too dry for the spicy beef. That's where the last half of my tea came in to save the day. And the waitress never came around to get me more tea or ask how I was doing. Bad service right there. Plus when I was actually finished, I sat there for eight minutes playing candy crush and bubble witch before having to turn around and wave for their attention to get me my bill. I was still courteous and left a ten percent tip. I really wanted to give them a big zero. Low quality food and awful service, I don't see why I'll ever want to experience this again. Next time I'll tell my coworkers to go try Chinatown Restaurant with me. read more

Lily Kai's food is ok - if you are comparing them to other Sonoma Chinese restaurants it's very good, but compared to Marin Chinese restaurants there's no competition. I'm including in this review: Single Use Plastics Rating for take-out: D- Unfortunately, they use plastic containers for each dish, then put everything in a plastic bag with more plastic bags inside with sauces (in plastic) as well. I have ordered take out twice from Lily Kai, both times asking for paper containers instead of plastic. Once they did great, and packed everything in paper boxes, the second time they said 'Sure, no plastic' and handed me multiple plastic containers anyway. So I'm giving them a D- for that. I have lived in Petaluma for a long time and rejoiced when this restaurant opened. It is clean, staff is friendly and food is pretty consistent. Wah wonton soup, Mongolian beef, House special pan fried crispy noodles are some of my favorites. Great value for the price. I think the success of this restaurant is that the owner (Lily Kai) works the back and front of the house, ensuring that quality and customer happiness is not left up the the servers. Also, she remembers you and is very friendly and is also very amiable to honoring any special requests. While I love the food and the service and the prices, I would love to see some more authentic Chinese/Taiwanese dishes on their menu. read more

Recently, I had the pleasure of dining at this establishment while on my way home to Sacramento. My family and I enjoyed a variety of dishes, including chicken chow mein, beef and broccoli, hot and sour soup, and a selection from the variety plate. The soup particularly stood out and left a lasting impression, making it a place I would recommend to anyone looking for a satisfying meal. I have been eating there since they opened as I can see they have gone down hill. We always got the Gen. Chicken which was the best we have ever had but the last 6 months it has been mushey and not crispy the broccoli beef was also slimmy why I don't know why but we do not eat there anymore as one of the waiters in there is always very rude to us and other people we know. What truly impressed us was that we lost a gift card that night and a few days later we called the restaurant and they remembered us by name and had kept the gift card in a safe place hoping the owner would call. I had the Generals Chicken, in which the coating was perfectly crisp & the Ginger/Garlic sauce had just the right bite.
