Canton Restaurant is one of my favorite Chinese spots in the Sonoma area. They serve some of the best Mongolian beef I've ever had, perfectly cooked, great flavor, and consistently on point every time. Their chicken dishes are also excellent, and the hot and sour soup is a must-order. the food quality is always consistent. The service is amazing. The same lady who I believe is the owner is usually there, and she's always welcoming and attentive. It gives the place that family owned feel that keeps you coming back. If you are a vegetarian or vegan, avoid this restaurant. My family and I went there for lunch. I had previously checked that they have mixed vegetables. When ordering I told the waitress I am a vegan. With a smirk on her face she said that, "we don't do vegan." She said they put oyster sauce in the broth. I asked her to check with the chef. She would not do that. She said they had so many online orders that they cannot accommodate making a mixed vegetable dish from their menu which is vegetarian or vegan. The restaurant had already served food to all other customers (a few tables occupied on a weekday) and I didn't see anyone waiting for online orders. Their customer service is poor, to put it mildly. In my decades of having Chinese food I have not found a restaurant that puts oyster sauce in mixed vegetables or any other dish they claim to be vegetarian. read more

We ordered the sizzling rice soup, pot stickers, Mongolian beef, sweet and sour pork, and pork fried rice -- every dish was fresh, flavorful, and tasted like it was made to order. The ingredients tasted high quality and the food didn't leave you feeling overly heavy or greasy like a lot of Chinese restaurants do. Easily some of the best Chinese food I've had. TLDR: Hot and Sour soup and egg roll were bad. Mains were good. Lunch Special: Fried Rice: Good, flavorful, clean. A 4 out of 5 Kung Pao Chicken: Also good, flavorful, clean a 4 out of 5. Hot and Sour Soup: Bad honestly. No strong traditional flavor, instead watery and relatively bland. Egg roll: Not very flavorful and the sweet chili sauce with it is severely lacking. We happened upon this restaurant after a long day of floating on the Russian River. I'll keep this review brief- the staff wore masks, were polite and accommodating, and our only complaint would be that the food took a little long. We were a party of 7- 4 adults, a teen, a preteen, and an 8 year old. We ordered the fried wonton with meat, cheese wonton, egg drop soup, hot and sour soup, seafood soup, combination house chow menu, chicken fried rice, beef with vegetables, walnut shrimp, and shrimp Hong Kong style noodles. The soups and appetizers came quickly. The appetizers were crispy, not greasy, the meat filling of the wonton was tasty. It reminded me of the wontons I order in Chinatown SF. The cheese wontons were just as good. We ordered "small" soups that are enough to share between 2-4 people. The egg drop soup was tasty, my nephew (8 yr old) killed the seafood soup, his mom and dad finished every drop of the hot and sour soup. When our food finally came out we basically killed all the entrees. Only had to doggie bag a little fried rice and chow neon. Restaurant: Food: 5/5 - we cleared the plates, can't argue that Cleanliness: 4/5 - felt clean, looked a little dingy, daughters said bathroom was good Service: 4/5 refilled waters, took a min for entrees to come out, nothing negative just not beyond basic Price: 4/5 We'd come back if we're in the area. read more

Wanted to try this restaurant last night . We had the weirdest service ever . Walked in and the tables were not cleared and only 2 people eating. They said some bs about needing reservations . It was 7pm ish and the place was empty. The small place stunk too . How is this place still in business when they treat potential customers like this . The lady was so rude too. We are always looking for new places to dine, and based on so many other fabulous reviews, we were so excited to try The Canton! We decided to call our order in and pick it up. The gal said, "It will take around 25 minutes, is that okay?" We ordered Crunchy Szechuan Beef, Orange Chicken, Wonton Soup, Pot Stickers, Chow Mein. Portion sizes were small to average if comparing to other local Chinese takeout. Prices have changed since the menu posted online so you can't go by those anymore. The Crunchy Szechuan Beef was probably my favorite but still was not the best. I was very much excited on this dinner since they had many great reviews and a lot were recent. If you're looking for guaranteed great tasting and quality Chinese food, this is the only place to go in Petaluma other than Lily Kai. I give this place the 5th star due to maintenance of reasonable prices for their specials and most combinations. I understand in these times it's extremely difficult. Be prepared for a long, but worthwhile wait, as this place does have its peak hours, and rightfully so. I almost always get the Kung Pao Chicken with Fried or White rice (depending on my mood). The Jasmine tea is great tasting and soothing. Love the hot and sour soup. Once in a while I try their curry and it's pretty decent, but I have to stick with I like best and it's almost always the Kung Pao Chicken. As a transplant from rural Canada, I have no idea if this restaurant is authentic or traditional or anything else. I just know that it's now our go to place for Chinese food. Decent prices, great food, and so far has never been very busy. Only problem so far is the pork buns. One of my favorite items always, my wife doesn't really like them, so I get them to myself. This is our first and last experience at The Canton. Starting with hands down the WORST hot and sour soup we've ever tasted. It has oil in it! It was beyond disgusting and inedible. The shrimp chow mein had tiny overcooked rubbery shrimp . About as big as half a pinky. The noodles had no flavor but were cooked properly and had little veggies. That ended up being a good thing because I noticed pieces of rotten onions. The sweet and sour pork was greasy, not fresh, hard pieces and again very little flavor to anything. The rice was dry and overcooked.The potstickers were properly cooked but flavorless. $40 lunch time with tip is beyond overpriced and very disappointing. I wanted to write a very honest review to warn others about this place that is quite possibly the worst we ever had. Nothing tasted fresh, flavorful, made with any standards or care. The chef has given up when they cannot cook such basic dishes like above. And that soup was absolutely shocking! Just terrible all around. Rude waitress, bad food, hot stuffy dining room. My husband and I have eaten at Canton for years. NEVER AGAIN. We ordered pick-up last night and everything was undercooked. The broccoli, which was in both of our dishes was hard and barely cooked, as were the carrots. We ordered scallops and they too were almost raw, very chewy, and tasteless. Neither dish had anywhere near enough sauce. Neither dish was edible. We spent $50 on this meal. When we called to see if maybe there was a new cook in the kitchen, or maybe, I mean we didn't understand how it could be so awful. Well, the woman who owns the place answered the phone and she was so rude. She would accept no responsibility for what their kitchen had put out. She argued with my husband, who was very polite to her. She didn't offer to remake the food. She finally, after about 10 -15 minutes of conversation offered my husband $20 back. Remember, we have been their customers for at least 10 years and have never complained before. Very poor customer service. I will never eat there again. read more

Wow! Hidden in a strip mall near a highway is this little gem. It's Covid time and there is no dine in right now. We see the yelp reviews and call in our order. The wait time is near an hour. The food is fresh and hot. Seriously enjoyed the mild flavors allowing for the ingredients to distinctly come through. The salt and sugar level were perfect and low. Had hot and sour soup, egg drop soup. Fine. Scallops with broccoli. Chicken with black mushrooms, super good. Fish with black bean sauce. Charsui Hong Kong style noodles. Missing some veggies in the noodles. Braised string beans ( not the best) All in all fed five with plenty of leftovers. Rice was not included. Will order a side of rice next time. Why the five stars? Used to think this place was decent considering Petaluma has nothing to compare to anything over the bridges. Not anymore. Tucked into a strip mall with a Lucky supermarket. Came here for lunch on a Thursday. Walked in and nobody there except 4 folks seated. Went to the restroom - which was nice and clean. When I came out a lady was there with a to go order and asked me if me if I had ordered to go. I said no I wanted to sit down. As others have said, soup was watered down and a little bland but decent. Food came out quickly. Rice was good. I was really disappointed at the spice level of the beef. It was about a 1 or 2 on a scale of 5, not the 3 or 4 I expected. Beef was fried then mixed with onions, bell pepper and some water chestnuts. Good sauce.
