For our office birthday celebrations, the best cakes are the ones from Lily's Bakery. They make a special order fresh fruit cake that everyone raves about. There's a layer of light sponge cake, followed by a few crispy layers, covered by a layer of buttercream. On top, there's a border of cream, inset with rows and rows of fruit (halved strawberries, sliced kiwi, canned peaches, canned pineapples, maraschino cherries). The whole thing is just about the lightest and freshest cake you'll ever had. There's just a hint of sweetness; not the cloying, dense cake you'll generally find made by western bakeries. I've had intimate relations with my vietnamese coffee aka. cafe sua da from probably every known place across the Little saigon Area. Some were just one-night stands, some were summer flings, and some turned into long term relationships. Being the caffeine whore that I am, I've been around the block ya dig? However, the one that is most satisfying to me is lily's bakery. THe cafe sua da is just mothereffing crack! Not the sweet kind you get at Lee's Sandwiches, or the super super bitter one either. It's the perfect, or almost perfect coffee. Lily's Bakery is pretty cool, except that if you are under the age of 30, you will probably stand out. It's okay though, old men here just want to chill too, drink their coffee, talk shiz with their buddies, stare at the occasional cutie that walks by, and have an excuse to not be at home with their wifes. Can't playa hate on that can you? All in all, Lily's bakery has the best coffee, beignets are pretty good, and good cakes. Coffee and beignets? Sounds like a good way to start the morning. I love beignets. Fried dough, powdered sugar? How can something so simple be so good? I came here this morning and got a coffee and some beignets. Even though the beignets weren't fresh out of the fryer, they were just warm, they were still pretty tasty. They were not very consistent though. Some corners were nice and doughy while some corners were thin and crispy. I prefer doughy over thin and crispy. Overall, I enjoyed them. Do eat them right away because they harden after awhile. My coffee was also really good. It was good, but I prefer Lee's. I swear, Lee's put something extra in their coffee because I'm seriously addicted. This place was packed this morning. I don't know if it's usually like this or just because it's around the holidays. There were tables inside and outside. Almost everyone who hung around were older, Asian men. My friend and I actually enjoyed our coffees and beignets there. Hey, if you can't beat them, join them, right? Seriously though, everyone was pretty nice, so it was all good. Overall, it was more around 3.5 stars for me. I've been coming to Lily's Bakery since I was 19 years old. When I used to live around the area, it was a favorite spot to hang out for Sunday coffee for my girlfriends and I; which was an irony, considering most of the people who hang out at Lily's are middle-aged Vietnamese men. We didn't come there for the atmosphere - the obvious gawking should be handled with a certain level of desensitization; but for the coffee, which is still undoubtedly the best Vietnamese-French coffee I've had anywhere, bar none. My usual is Cà Phê Hazelnut Lat Ngot Bo Kem Man, a Vietnamese name for Hazelnut Vietnamese drip coffee, light caffeine, a bit on the sweet side, topped with sea salt-infused-whipped cream. If the description doesn't have licking your lips, your imagination may need a software update :). While you're sipping on your coffee with the impossible name (I recommend ordering it in Vietnamese, you'll get better service from the staff), try Lily's beignets, a close runner-up for Cafe Du Monde beignets: fluffy, soft, warm, and lightly dusted with a perfect amount of powder sugar. Chances are you'll get the sugar all over your shirt as you greedily devour the second beignet after you taste how delicious the first one is. Went here for a little afternoon pick-me-up. Mostly people came here for their regular Vietnamese ice coffee. We tried their regular ice coffee, it was SUPER potent lol. Mind you, I am not a coffee drinker. Vietnamese ice coffee is mixed with condensed milk, so it will taste sweet. My friend and I were running some errands and he suggested that we went to Lily's Bakery to grab a slushie because they were absolutely incredible. This place is located in the same plaza as Seafood Cove 2 and most of the time, this parking lot can be very hectic! There's Seafood Cove 2, which brings in on the Dim Sum-ers, and a supermarket there. No bueno! The combination of the two makes up an embassy of Asians hoping to destroy your car. I've had days where I drove in circles in that place looking for a spot for 30 minutes to an hour. And when you're there for a slushie, it's not worth the time. However, on this particular occasion, we had no such problem. I walked into the Bakery and it was a mirror image of the Van's Bakery on Brookhurst. I even asked him if this had the same owner. I had a feeling that it was, because when I grabbed the Beef Jerky bags, it said Van's Bakery on it... The store specializes in Vietnamese/Chinese baked goods and snacks. And for the most part, all the items are pretty tasty. My friend ordered a mango slushie and a pork pate chaud for me. The slushie was quite delicious. I just wish I hadn't gotten boba with it because they were hard as rocks. The pork pate chaud was typical. The croissant portion of it was a little stiff on the edges, which was a bit of a turn off. And there didn't seem to be too much meat in it. But overall, it helped satisfy my hunger until we could find a sit down restaurant. read more

I've only tried the Vietnamese Iced Coffee here. Its strong like the typical Viet coffee, but its not too sweet. I like it! A little better than most Viet coffee I've tried all around Socal. Best banh mi since moving to OC: -soft, non-palate-ripping bread -super-fiery danger jalapeños -near-sufficient amounts of wonderful paté, -random, unidentifiable, and delicious meats, and -that coveted sweet-sour-savory-spicy explosion of flavor. Plus, you get to sit outside and watch hilarious parking fights go down in the insanely crowded lot out front! You also have to smell cigarette smoke, unfortunately. Their durian shake is the durian-est durian to ever durian. Be very careful with it. You will be have durian breath for DAYS, regardless of what you eat or brush your teeth with to try and kill it. Get the combo sandwich and make sure to at least appear to deliberate for a few seconds so as to get a beignet sample! read more

Luckily for some us kiddos that speak broken Vietnamese - the owner speaks English rather well. THANK Goodness. **They take credit cards**** BEIGNETS: $4 for 12 pieces (not sure how much individually). I would say 8/12 were delicious. Not too oily/greasy. Nice texture w/ powdered sugar on top. FRESH & WARM. DELICIOUS. 4/12 were hard, hallow and break apart. BUMMER. NOTE: Not as thick as beignets at Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans or Downtown Disney. CAKE: I've had my fair share of cakes from Lily's at various famiily functions through the years. Ranging from the old school buttercream cake w/ La Dua (pandan leaves...green) to the all Jelly kind. Nothing too exciting. 3/5 on the cakes. My FAVE cake here (lately) is: Flan cake on top w/ mango jelly on bottom ($26). You can choose Avocado jelly instead. Pretty good. Mango jelly had a good flavor - not as artificial as imagined it to be (considering the color was a bit too orange). The Flan was firm - not too soft or hard; hint of coffee/caramel flavor. Complemented the mango jelly well. **If I had to get a cake here - this would be my cake of choice. I still prefer the richer type cakes from other bakeries (like Blackmarket bakery). Okay, so you've got to get through all the smoking, staring men (and invariably, they're all men) sitting outside to actually enter the store. However, once you're inside, there are lots of goodies to be had. Their fruit cake is pretty good. Not as good as my go-to fruit cake place (see my Long Phung review), but it tastes good and looks very pretty. A good dessert to bring to a dinner party, perhaps. Their beignets are nice and fluffy. For people who complain about cold beignets, seriously folks... In my experience any beignet that is cold is not that good, even if it comes from the "best" beignet place ever. It's just fried dough. After awhile, fried dough that sits out for a couple of hours cannot be that good. So I guess what I'm saying is that you have to come at the precise time when they just come out of the fryer - then the beignets will taste scrumptious. The lady behind the counter was nice enough to give us some free samples. They were warm and pleasant. I am not a huge hazelnut fan (quelle horreur!), but if you like your cafe sua da to have that flavor, then this is a good place to get your coffee kick. read more

The cake tasting service was horrible. $12 for only three flavors. No buttercream was on the cake slices for the tasting, only whipped cream. And only 3 flavors were available. We basically were given 3 slices to try, and left sitting alone, no consultation, no advise, nothing. I'd rather go somewhere else and pay a little bit more for quality and service. She quoted me $450 for ~220 people. I will order our cake somewhere else, the cake will cost a little bit more, but I know communication, service and quality will meet my expectation. read more

I come here twice a month to grab a box of their notorious Beignets. It's like a donut that's hollow inside (less carb!) sprinkled with powder sugar. If it's your first time trying this and you're still not sure, ask for a sample. They make a fresh batch every 2 hours. It goes really fast. A dozen for $3 with a carrying box. But wasn't the price that threw me off. It's their homemade custard dipping that goes with this. They only serve that on the weekend though, and it will be $2 extra. Beside the Beignets, the Fruit Tart Cake is also delicious. Make sure you get the Tart, and not the Flan. the Flan is too sweet and they use too much flour, I found it a bit dry. That goes for the rest of their other pastries. The cake is not moist enough. The Cheesecake is on the dry side and tastes like flour more than cream cheese. Their coffee and cappuccino is strong, but not smooth. That is why I took one star off. But perhaps it's a personal taste...I hope you like it. read more

If you want a quick fix for your beignet cravings then this is your place to go. Beignets are premade but they cost less than a dollar per piece. I didn't know that at first so when I came in I was a little disappointed but much to my surprise they actually tasted pretty good. It was light and fluffy. They dust the beignets with powdered sugar once they are placed in the bag so ask for extra powder sugar so all of the beignets are covered with that dusty goodness. The environment of the place reminds me of a any regular cafe. It's not super nice nor is it super ghetto. Jusr an average looking cafe/bakery. Think of a starbucks/ coffee bean setup but with patio seatings. I am definitely coming back if I am around the area. read more

I would give 4 stars because the food was good and they were very convenient. Was able to get a party plate of mini sandwiches in an hour. Their cakes were beautiful and ready to go -- not to mention tasty :) I gave them 3 stars because the service was.... Eh. Pushy people in line. The staff would help several people at once which is confusing to a newbie. There's not definite line to stand in, so you kind of have to BE the pushy one too. Went here and asked them to make a simple Pokémon ball cake with the dome shaped Cake that they have made there and it was on the display. How do you mess up a simple cake? I had to take it because if not there would be no Cake at a themed party. On top of it they used the the wrong shaped cake and used waxed as the number 9 which the kids ate and they did not warn us to not eat it. Usually anything placed on a cake aside from the candles are edible. Kids were not happy with that. They charged me 55 dollars for this cake and most people told me for that price this cake was not worth it and I couldn't agree more. Never going here again. read more

YUM. My auntie took me and my cousin here to scope out the pastries. While I didn't think the selection was abundant, I found the pastries itself to be DELICIOUS. I opted for the fruit tart, which had a lot of fresh fruits on top of a buttery, flakey tart, with a sweet but not overly sweet glaze. Fruit tart here is the best thing ever, and I knew it when I was ten years old and this place opened. I begged my Mom to take my inside, and my brother proceeded to hit on cashier. Now he's married with two kids, that's how long it's been. A mixture of canned and fresh fruits with glaze of gelatin to hold the top together and to keep its color (oxygen is a fruit-topped cake's enemy). Underneath is a layer of buttery, crispy, and flakey puff pastry (though I think it's more phyllo dough), and for the bottom a traditional light Asian style cake with a butter frosting. Less sugary than a traditional American butter cream though. Great cake, with great flavors, light, with a nuance of butter cream and without the crazy overly sweet flavor of most frostings or shortening based frostings (ick). I have been using this cake as a "meet the parents" cake for birthdays and other family events. They also make other cake, the mocha cake, coconut cake, and durian cake here though are delicious but conventional for the area. Oh yeah there is a contingent of old Vietnamese men that sit out front and play cards, smoke, and drink coffee. I forgot to say the coffee here is pretty good. One time a customer was telling me that I should date a nice Vietnamese boy instead of the Chinese boyfriend I have now because I had to have "Happy Birthday" written in English. I guess most people would be offended but it is so Vietnamese old school it reminded me of my crotchety and racially proud grand uncle. this place is so overrated and overpriced. the vietnamese iced coffee that i got was pretty good and very strong. my complain is the amount of ice they put!! first of all, they dont fill the coffee to the top.. second of all, 75% of the cup is filled with ice. i think the coffee cost about $3.. what total ripoff..! i also tried the cream horn and cream puff. the cream puff isnt bad. but the cream horn is!! the cream inside is made with butter and taste very disgusting.. not worth $3.50 at all.. most of the people that come here are old folks so i felt a little out of place when i entered the store. everybody was staring at me like im an alien or something.. service is really bad, horrible, and sucks.. no welcome, no greeting, no nothing!! read more

I just had my first cup of iced Vietnamese coffee from Lily's Bakery and let me tell you I'm hooked. I'm not even a coffee drinker, but this coffee (which is kind of similar to Turkish coffee, I think) tastes like liquid dark chocolate. I'm a HUGE fan of that bittersweet taste so I loved it. Oh, and I had them make it with lowfat milk so it wouldn't be as heavy. Anyway, it was delicious! I'm planning to go back soon to try their pastries ;) read more

I love the iced coffee here but it's not my favorite. I used to buy cakes here when I was younger but they have become expensive over the years. For those java freaks who love Vietnamese ice coffee or maybe have never had one, Lily's Bakery is my recommendation. They by far have the best Vietnamese ice coffee in town. Most places in OC now have swayed from the traditional Vietnamese coffee by adding hazlenut, cocoa powder and many other "special ingredients that take away from the coffee flavor. The reason I LOVE coffee, in a addition the caffeine pick-me-up, is the taste of coffee. They make the espresso for the ice coffee to order and they keep it simple and delicious. And don't forget their beignets. They give all of their customers a free one with your coffee order. They're excellent! The service is always friendly and welcoming. And FYI. For those who love that hazlenut flavor, you can order a hazlenut ice coffee. They do make them. I personally love mine the traditional way. The way my great granpa probably drank it back in the old country when Viet Nam was known to the rest of the world as French Indo-China. read more

I always thought beignets were like really dense powdered donuts. That is so wrong. Well, at least at Lily's Bakery it is. I couldn't understand why my mom opted for the dozen beignets instead of just 4, two for her and two for me. After one bite, I figured out why. They were light and airy, not doughy at all. They have just a light dusting of powdered sugar so they weren't too sweet or sugary. I also tried their cappuccino on a rainy day, it was perfect. It wasn't too sweet or heavy at all and tasted a lot like hot cocoa, but it was good regardless. My only gripe is the plethora of aged Vietnamese men that mull around the cafe, read newspapers, drink coffees, smoke, and stay there all. freaking. day. I swear, they don't leave, which means there's never any seating, at least none when I go there. So, Lily's is good for to-go but not really for a sit down coffee stop. read more

Coffee: amazing, delicious, best in bolsa Customer Service: horrible!! They gave our friend the wrong cake when they went to pick it up for another friend, did not realize until they got to destination about 1 hr away. Then we went to pick up the correct cake after Nga there told us it would be okay since they made a mistake. We got there and they refused to give us the right cake unless we paid for it (again) or bring the other cake back (which is an hr away) and denied anything Nga said over the phone. Said that they made a mistake because it was really busy (and that's our fault how?!). Instead of just eating their mistakes and keeping a customer happy, Daisy over there could not get over her pride and refused to provide any customer service and instead kept saying that we need to compromise for their mistake. So beware, next time you pick up your cake, keep in mind it might have been in possession of another customer who were given the wrong cake and forced to bring it back. After eating at Banh Cuon Tay Ho, my dad was craving some Vietnamese iced coffee. Since Van's Bakery was the opposite direction of where we were going, we stopped here. Incidentally, I had Lily's Bakery bookmarked as well. ICED VIETNAMESE COFFEE - seems to be the most popular item here - strong yet not too sweet - I liked that it had an actual coffee taste to it - I'm not a coffee expert (yet) but it's better than Lee's BEIGNETS - not actually fresh since they kept warm in the warm display case - beignets were probably commonly bought in bulk since they were prepackaged in boxes already - my dad told me the beignets were not that great but I wanted to try them anyway - really they are NOT great; it's flat, very airy and not much dough. - the outside was NOT even crispy or at least crunchy - honestly, they were disappointing and a waste of calories. SERVICE: pretty typical for Vietnamese fast-food establishments. They don't have the patience for you to decide. Tell them now or they'll move onto the next person. They don't like answering many questions. They expect you to know them. ENVIRONMENT: kick it spot for the MIDDLE-AGE MEN. Many small tables alongside the bakery for groups of men to hang out and drink coffee and smoke. Not the most inviting environment if you're a group of young ladies, unless you are cool with what I just described. They do try to keep the decor fancy by imitating French decor...kind of. Overall, I'm glad I got to check off another place off my never-ending list of places to visit/try. I probably won't be coming back just due to the location. (I mainly stay on Bolsa or Westminster between Magnolia and Brookhurst). Parking wasn't too hard to find since the plaza isn't exactly "poppin" and it's not in the "main" Little Saigon. I went to Van's bakery to order my cake and was told to pick up my cake at noon. I get there and it's closed due to some electricity error! I was absolutely mortified because it was my niece's birthday and people were already showing up to the party! I called Lily's bakery and like a godsend, they were able to miraculously prepare a half sheet size cake in under 45 minutes! They were incredible. They even gave me samples of that baked square thingies. Thank you Lily's bakery for saving me and giving me an extra treat I could share with the party guests. We enjoyed everything! I am BIG on quality of the food and drinks when i do eat out. I am a foody. I enjoy eating gourmet food. I love to cook. So i am loyal to eateries that provide great tasting food.
