One Day Doors & Closets of Sacramento - Before #2

One Day Doors & Closets of Sacramento

I've hated my interior doors since moving in but never got around to looking for replacement…read moreoptions. For context, my existing doors were the original 1993 hollow-core slabs--plain, dated, and not doing the house any favors. I first asked a local contractor for his take. While he said he could handle it, he suggested going with a company that specializes exclusively in doors. Not long after, my social media feed started serving up options, and I ultimately chose **One Day Doors & Closets of Sacramento** for an initial consultation. The process was straightforward from start to finish. A representative came out within a week to take preliminary measurements, then invited me to their Rocklin showroom to review styles and finishes in person. I selected a three-panel design and a color that closely matched my existing palette. About a week later, an installer returned to take precise measurements of each opening. They custom-cut each door to fit the existing frames and hinge locations. A few weeks after that, installation day arrived--and within a few hours, everything was complete. They also upgraded the hinges to brushed nickel to match my existing hardware. The difference is substantial. The new doors are solid, noticeably quieter, and significantly more attractive. Overall, a very positive experience from consultation through installation.

My closet doors are installed, but I wish they weren't. My wife and I were promised custom closet…read moredoors with 3D laser measurement. When the installer arrived to take the measurements, he pulled out a tape measure. Confused, we followed up with Monika and were told that the 3D technology is only used for customers with swing doors. My contract specifically said that laser measurement was included, but that wasn't delivered. Install day: - 1 door was painted the wrong color and had to be sent back - The 3 other closet doors were hung crooked - The installer damaged my floors by screwing in guides rather than using the adhesive option we were promised and left gashes in the flooring when bringing the doors in - A 4.5" unfinished trim board (which Monika never discussed with us) was installed across the top of the closets When my wife asked the installer about these concerns, he blamed Monika for not communicating with him better. While he did apologize for the door being the wrong color, he tried to convince my wife that screwing the guides into the subfloor was the optimal approach and that our flooring contactor had lied to us when they suggested not to screw into a floating floor, but he agreed to come back the next day with adhesive to fix his mistake. After sending an email to Monika documenting these problems, she offered to reduce our remaining balance and promised to send the installer back "until we were happy." Install day 2: - I called to check in on the progress and my wife let me speak with the installer. He skirted the issue of the crooked doors by blaming the existing closet framing. I acknowledged that my house isn't perfectly square and achieving perfection wasn't possible but I asked him to get it as close as he could. He responded, "I can see you're going to be meticulous about this so I can just leave the guide with the tape and you can do it yourself" - which felt like a complete lack of professionalism - The adhesive tape is clearly visible under the guides to cover the screw holes in my flooring that went unpatched - The doors are still not level with visible gapping - Sawdust kept forming as the doors were opened and closed because they drilled the door pull holes all the way through and forgot to put hardware on the interior holes. Hardware had to be delivered the next day to fix this issue. There was nothing that felt "custom" about this experience and it definitely wasn't a "one day" project. Monika made apologies, but that doesn't change the lack of quality in the doors, the misleading website claims, or the exhausting install issues.

Job: replace rotting wood siding on the front of home with james hardie siding…read more Found DOM thru the hardie website - DOM was listed as an official installer. When I called I talked to Peter who is the same person listed on the business license. This was the type of small company I was looking for. A company that knows their job but I do not have to pay the overhead of an executive staff and marketing. Peter showed up when he said, gave an excellent quote, clearly knew Hardie board as well as any other company I talked with. After getting the permit he was on the job almost exactly when he said he would. My take on his crew was that they are all friends. They work well together. Tear off was fast and installing the "body" hardieboard was quite fast. Most of the time was spent in prep - adding underlayment, flashing, paper & caulking. I was very impressed watching the attention to detail. When installing the siding they made suggestions but never pushed. I asked them to do our columns with a bit more detail which I knew would take more time. They did it with no hesitation and they came out beautifully. They cleaned up the job site each day. When doing tear off they filled their truck each day to remove debris quickly. Small Con: in the quote for the work they asked for a large downpayment. My understanding is calif only allows up to $1K as a downpayment. I emailed and suggested a pay as you go structure and DOM was happy to work with that so it became a nonissue.

The work area was cleaned at the end of each work day. They were so pleased with the final project. Peter and Dennis worked with Arthur and Debbie from start to finish. Dom Construction can be highly recommended with full confidence to your family, friends and neighbors.

Our 20 year old wood screen door had just about had it. We wanted to upgrade to something better…read morewith security in mind. We chose A to Z because of their reputation and the wide selection of security doors & designs that they offered. Our installer Ricardo showed up on time within the appointment time that was given to us, and went right to work after explaining the install procedure with me. The door looked great and included all of the hardware that my wife and I picked out (doorknobs, locks, etc). I was really impressed with the finished product when everything was completed. The before and after photos don't lie! Thanks A to Z!

I'd been wanting to replace my screens for years because the previous owners of my home had cats…read morethat had torn a few of them. On top of that I had my windows cleaned a couple of years ago and the window cleaner apologized for not being able to clean the screens; he said he had a machine he would normally run them through but that mine were so old and brittle his machine would destroy them. So I finally decided to move forward with this project, and after doing a fair amount of online research I decided to contact A to Z Window Screens. The estimator that came out to the house was very friendly, and got right to work. I had him measure every screen on the house, including my sliding screen door that would stick half-open about 60% of the times I'd try to open it. He explained all the options regarding screen types and how A to Z makes their screens so that there is no bowing or warping of them, and he also showed me how they index the various screens on the house so that if you needed a replacement for one in the future you could call and tell them "I need a replacement for screen #7" and they would have all the information needed to start right away from their estimator's visit. I must say, the price for rescreening everything on the house was much less frightening than I thought it would be, so I took the leap and committed with a 10% deposit. I also asked if they would clean my dryer vent since it had been awhile and I noticed that they did that work too. About 3 weeks went by and I received a call telling me that my screens were ready. I also had 90 days from this time to find a convenient time for me to have them installed. We agreed on a date, and a day or two before then I received an email and a text telling me all about the installer that would be arriving at my house - Ricardo. Ricardo showed up on time and promptly parked where he would block my wife's car from leaving the garage shortly thereafter. I walked outside, introduced myself, and explained the situation. He happily moved the truck to the other half of the driveway. I gave him time to get organized, then he came to the door and explained the installation process to me. He first laid all of the new screens out where they would be installed, and then got to work replacing the old one with the new ones. Thankfully he took the old ones with him for disposal, so I didn't have to deal with that. A bit after starting installation Ricardo came to the door again and explained to me that there were a lot of wasps buzzing under the eaves near some of the second-story windows he needed to replace the screens on. He asked if it would be alright for him to replace those screens from inside, and I agreed since there was already a screen he needed to do that for because of a large tree right outside the window housing the screen. We managed to pull off the installation with no wasps getting inside and no one getting stung, so both of us were happy. Ricardo finished installing the screens, including the door, and was ready to tackle the dryer vent at that point. I explained what I thought was the best path to access the second story roof to him, and wished him luck because we have one of the world's smallest laundry rooms and Ricardo was sort of a big guy to be fitting in the space that is left with the washer and dryer in there. Undaunted, he went upstairs and got the dryer unhooked and his wetvac going. Then he went up on the roof to auger the dryer vent out from there into the wetvac. When I asked him how bad it was afterward he said that the dryer hose connecting to the wall was plugged with lint but not even hooked to the exit vent in the laundry room, so the wall vent was fine. He hooked everything back up, used duct tape to ensure it didn't come loose again, and explained that I cannot move the dryer from where he left it or it will either pinch the flexible hose between dryer and wall or disconnect again. All in all it was a seamless, smooth experience having both the screens (and sliding door, which has not jammed once since replacement) installed and also having the dryer vent cleaned. I highly recommend A to Z for their service, prices, and their focus on customer relations and satisfaction!

    HomeStory Doors of Sacramento

Unfortunately for us, working with this company has been a nightmare. I'm willing to amend this…read morereview if work ever gets completed but HomeStory has been absolutely horrible at meeting their end of installing two doors at our house. We initially agreed to contract with HomeStory to replace our front door and our garage (fire) door in March of 2022. The initial consultation was pleasant, their representative was certainly skilled enough to encourage us to move forward. She did not, however, seem to take notes good enough to order the correct hardware we wanted even though several emails were sent back and forth to further clarify before any work took place. There were a couple delays on initially starting this job from HomeStory, we had to reschedule the initial install because the main new front door was not received when expected. Market conditions, we get it. James (install manager) assured me over the phone that he would closely inspect the new front door when it came in to make sure there was no flaws from the distributor. This did lead me to believe that James was going to assure efficiency throughout. The front door alone was/is an expensive door and my main concern. When HomeStory began work on this job in May of 2022 they showed up with incorrect hardware, they actually had two (duplicate) front door handles and therefore could not install a new door knob on our firedoor. Not a major goof, you would think. We had to re-use the handle from our old fire door until they could come back out later to correct with proper hardware, which meant locks and keys did not match up. But on the initial install when they opened the other boxes their installers noticed the incorrect finish on half of the hardware. We had told their sales person several times that all finishes were to be black. Instead they arrived with Black knobs and silver hinges and a silver peep hole. More importantly, the new front main door, which I had been informed would be closely inspected by James, was in the back of their truck and not easy to access. I asked the installers if I could see it and they were able to move a few things out of the way so I could catch a glimpse into a dark truck from about 10ft away. By the time we got a good look at the new door I instantly noticed flaws but at that point our old door and frame had already been removed. There was damage to the new frame that the new door came in. There was debris in-between the panes of glass in the window of the new door. The paint work on it was horrendous, the paint actually began falling off the door in several places in the next month or so. The trim around the doors' window was over-glued. Just really poor work and quality for a very expensive door. We had no choice but to have it installed at that point. The install crew also did not arrive at initial installation with correct new trim for the new front door, you can see in the pictures I added that they took our old trim (white) from our old door that they had ripped off and damaged to throw back around the new door until they could come back to replace with the correct trim. We were told by the salesperson we worked with that we would not have to do anything, that everything would be taken care of for both these doors. We learned at install that was inaccurate, be prepared to paint the new interior trim they put on around your doors. You will need to fill the nail holes as well, something I wish I knew ahead of time. The initial install obviously did not go well. Wrong hardware, damaged door, missing trim, re-using old materials, locks don't match, we have to paint, etc. We understand stuff goes wrong, it's life. But it is now almost November of 2022 and the job is nowhere near completion. We were told it would take one day to complete installation, it's currently going on 6 months!!! Their installers have been out a couple of times but it's been completely unorganized and have actually arrived with incorrect hardware (again). James recently scheduled a day to have his installer come out again only to cancel on me 20 mins after the installer was supposed to arrive, they had realized that they again ordered the incorrect parts. HomeStory blamed their distributor T.M. Cobb for the poor quality of the front door and did have a T.M. Cobb representative come out. The T.M. Cobb representative blamed HomeStory for not properly inspecting the door before installing and admitted to me that the front door and frame were damaged and poorly finished and needed to be taken back to their warehouse for correction. We currently have a temporary front door from T.M. Cobb that honestly looks like trash which is not a good look for everyone asking about our "door job" with HomeStory. What's even worse is the T.M. Cobb representative pointed out to me the poor finish on the fire door, which I had completely missed. Will this two door job ever be completed? All pics are post install, including damages.
