What a great little gem we found recently! We were running some errands in Daly City and had a craving for Mexican food, but wanted a sit-down restaurant instead of a take-out style taqueria. Luckily we were close to Lisa's and decided to give it a try and were rewarded with a great time! I went with Lisa's Supreme Burrito and it was very good, but be prepared for the BIG portion. My wife went with a simple chicken quesadilla and said it was exactly what she was hoping for. While the food was good, my highlight might have been the Michelada as it may have been one of the best I've ever had! On top of all that, the staff was all so nice and welcoming. They were very helpful with everything we needed and it was great to watch them treat every table of customers like they were welcoming guests into their home. Lisa's Mexican Restaurant is at the top of the hill Daly City. Have heard about this place but my first time trying with friends who are regulars. Parking around the area was easy. The decor has an abundance of artisan work, photos, drawings that yearn to tell their stories. It works, warm and cozy. Interior is a bit dark but you feel warmly welcomed by Mario in front, José and Ana in the kitchen. Started with their freshly made guacamole and house-made tortilla chips, wine and shots of tequila! Ordered: * Steak Ala Lisa - cooked w/ranchera sauce & onions. Looked good and aroma was yum. This is a special of the house. Will definitely order this next time. * José's Salad - chopped lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, grilled chicken & balsamic dressing. Tried a bite. Really really good! I'll order next time. * Enchilada, Taco, Chile Relleno combo - asked to sub whole beans instead of refried. This is good satisfying meal with a little bit of everything, enchilada, taco & Chile Relleno. The crispy taco was really good. Whatever the sauces were was tasty and, thank goodness, not heavily salty! * House-made flan - this was a really good flan, not overly sweet, melts in your mouth. Good way to end a meal! Other dishes recommended that I need to try on my next visit, Chicken quesadillas, Prawns Ala Brava, Mole anything, Menudo, and those other ones that made me go, oh yea!, grilled combo of steak, chicken, prawns, Chile Colorado & Chile Verde! I have been living in Pacifica for 13 years and can't believe I only found the wonderful Lisa's but a few months ago -- I woulda been a regular here for years had I known sooner. I used to have two favorite Mexican places in Pacifica but one closed a few years ago and the other has increasingly gone downhill. So a few months back I was looking for other options and up popped Lisa's, a place that's been in Daly City for years but, for some reason, had never been listed in my results in the past. But, based on the reviews, I HAD to try it -- and so glad I did as it is now my favorite Mexican restaurant in all of the Bay Area. So lovingly designed inside, comfortable, warm, homey feel. Your host, Mario, is an absolute delight -- so personable, so patient(!), and such a gentleman. He's the kinda guy who becomes friends with everyone, you'll come to love him. And then there's the food -- oh, the food! Their mole enchiladas are to die for! When I haven't been to Lisa's in awhile I get a huge craving for the mole enchiladas, so good, so authentic -- and it's not only hard to find good mole in the Bay Area, it's hard to find ANY mole, so I'm so appreciative Lisa's has it and does it justice. Their tacos, with homemade shells ... incredible! And they have very high quality meats -- chicken, which is a combo white meat & dark meat -- or you can get ground beef, but it's not of hamburger consistency, it's more like very very finely chopped steak. It's another craveable item! And then there's the rice & beans. You say rice & beans are "just rice & beans"..? NO! Not here at least. The beans, both black and pinto, are SO fresh-tasting (although I slightly favor the black) and the rice is not like traditional Mexican rice that has been mixed with too much tomato, as I find at most places -- it's light and fluffy and just the right flavor (which means not over-flavored!) and put that, together with your beans, on your fork and, as they say on Chopped, it is such a delicious bite! Chips are too notch, not greasy and not too thick, like at some other places, and a fantastic salsa. SO many things to drink! I don't drink alcohol, although, if you do, they have a lot of great choices. What I love is their Jamaica ("hah-MY-cuh") agua fresca -- if you've never had it, it's sorta like non-alcoholic sangria, and without the fruit, but delicious -- and their mango ice tea, SO refreshing! Love this place so much have already been back about 10 times since I discovered it months back -- and always a delight to see Mario. You must definitely try this place out, it will soon become one of your favorites -- but, be forewarned, hours are very limited so be sure to double-check their schedule. read more

Long awaited dinner get together with my friend, and she suggested Lisa's. She said she has been going to Lisa's for ages, so I was excited to check out a new restaurant. Please note - Restaurant is only open until 7pm right now. Staff are so very friendly. I was introduced to Mario - what a character! So much to choose from on the menu. After much debate, I went with the Steak a la Lisa. Really like the flavor of the steak with the onions and peppers, and it went well with the rice and beans. Wish there was more meat, though. Friend ordered the chicken flautas which looked really good too. I want to order that next time. Really clean restaurant, staff very welcoming, and food was good. More of a hole-in-the-wall type of place, but those tend to be the best for both food and service. Lisa's was no exception. When we walked in, we were warmly greeted by the staff and I think it was the owner himself who serviced us throughout our meal. We had several small kids with us and he was really great about humoring them and even helped us take some pictures during our meal. Our table of 7 got a few different entrees between us, including the house special steak, the mole enchiladas, a wet burrito, a cheese quesadilla, and a chicken salad. Everything was tasty, although I wish there were more guacamole on my salad. Even my son, who is the world's pickiest eater, polished off 1/3 of my husband's wet burrito, so that is saying something! read more

I love a local business that has music and friendly service, and for that it might have gotten 4 stars had the food been a little more flavorful for the prices. Two people and the bill was over $60 with dessert and horchata. Thing is the food is lackluster and tastes like it's from a street fair. Yes, they are friendly, but I'm also judging the food and drinks too. The crispy taco wasn't very hot or crispy, the enchilada was very bland, and the rice and beans tasted just meh. We agreed the best part of the meal was the flan. They make really good flan here. The strawberry drink and horchata were way too sweet, not sure how much sugar they're adding but we didn't finish our expensive agua frescas. I really wanted to like this place, but we left most of our food on the table, and $60 is a lot to pay for Mexican food that leaves you hungry. read more

Food was ok here. Tortilla chips were a bit staled. I ordered a chicken enchilada and a pork tamale combo plate. Tamale was my favorite thing here. Super flavorful and delicious. It wasn't dried out like some tamales can be. Chicken enchilada was decent. Nachos we're not so great. They put lettuce on it which doesn't really make sense to me other than to serve as a filler. It gets wilted and warm and I don't really care for warm lettuce. Overall it felt like this simple dish was executed with much to be desired. Service was friendly. Restaurant was ok on the inside. First off - anyplace that has a Super Burrito listed as an appetizer is #1 in MY book!!! Mario is the most gracious, funny and warm host. Honestly wanted him to sit down and join us! He alone is worth 5*! The sangria and food are what I'd describe as high-end home-style -- what your mom would make at home if she knew what she was doing and wanted to impress a guest, but not so /fancy/ as to be over the top, or just to show off. Very good - high quality - comfort, but still interesting and damned tasty! They'll also tailor your meal any way you need, but if you don't want the beans ... WHY are you there?! LOL! Last but not least - this 1963 true "gem" has all the ambiance that's so desperately missing in today's Ikea-decorated white-walled sterile restaurants. The whole place is eye-candy and you know you're in a different world from the cold of Daly City the second you walk in. I grew up here and I had Godmother who was Hispanic, and cooked every day for us after baseball practice, I swear I was at her home again. The service was excellent, very friendly...almost as if you were a guest in their home. All of the food is prepared fresh. How do I know, I grew up in the city, and not to sound snobby, but we grew up with a certain sophistication of taste to the culturally diverse cuisines of the city. Setting: We checked out Lisa's on a whim on Cinco De Mayo and we weren't disappointed! Don't miss out on this amazing gem of a restaurant on Mission St in Daly City. I ordered Lisa's supreme burrito. A huge burrito filled with all sorts of goodness smothered in a beautiful green sauce. Let's just say that the plate was empty when i was done stuffing my face. The gentlemen at the front of the house was super cordial. His prompt follow-ups and great service enhanced the experience for sure. We were never without a drink or chips during our time waiting for our entrees. Lastly, the ambiance is one of a kind. The eclectic mix of old school photos as well as decorative memorabilia hanging from the ceiling made this place homey. The service was great! The host was so kind and made you feel very at home. The vibe was so cute, filled with art and decorations. A lot of statement pieces that were fun to talk about which made the time pass as you're waiting for food. The food was delicious. The ingredients tasted fresh. I haven't seen tomatoes this red in a long time. The crab enchiladas were delicious and something I would definitely order again. The chile relleno was cheesy, peppery and saucy. It was fried perfectly and the salsa soaked into the breading was absolutely delicious something i would recommend everyone go try immediately. Lastly, the agua fresca was perfectly sweet and refreshing, fruity but light. You can tell everything was cooked with a lot of heart. I placed an al a carte item over the phone and when I went to pick it up with my daughter she decided she would like some rice. No problem, therefore I requested to add a side of rice to my order. The short gentleman that works in the kitchen proceeded to roll his eyes and act put upon because I added to my order. Do you want my money or not? It's a cozy restaurant, but we had no trouble finding a table at dinner time on a Wednesday. Right away, you'll notice the vintage vibe (antique photos hanging nearly floor to ceiling), which we found charming. Let's get to the most important part - the FOOD! We enjoyed the chips with the mild salsa. For our entrees, we each ordered the tacos (beef) and tamales (pork)! Delicious! I can't believe I never knew this place existed. The salsa is fantastic. The staff are nice. The decor is fabulous. It's very old-timey vintage Mexican cinema film posters, photos of the actors, and of classic Mexican musicians with some American classics thrown in there. The food is also good and reasonable. This was a really fantastic meal. However, part of me believes that how you go into a meal is like how you go into a vacation: if you are on vacation in a beautiful place with someone that you do not care for and have bad company, it can alter your perspective on the place (meaning: you will never want to go there again because you fought with your ex at that restaurant or fought with your ex on that beach or...). Similarly if you go to a random, unimpressive place with someone you love, you can have a great time wherever you are. I think that this principle applies to having great food when you're hungry at a place that doesn't look like much from the outside. If you are starving AND you find a great place it can magnify the intensity of the meal six or seven times. (More research must be done on the exact number...) Anyway, I yelped a good Mexican restaurant in the area and loved the reviews. The outside of the building made me pause for a moment, but there was good street parking and (like in the above principle) I was very hungry. As soon as I went inside, everything was what I wanted it to be: colorful ambiance, quick greeting, excellent chips and salsa, a *very* spicy food option (with an extra warning of the dish's spiciness from the waiter and the chef) and quick kitchen-to-table time. I got all of those at Lisa's. Here is the best compliment I can give this place: I wish it was around the corner from my house, so I could eat the Cajun Chicken all the time. It might have the best spicy Mexican sauce I have ever had and I have eaten spicy food all over Guatemala and Mexico. Go there. read more

Very small hole in the wall not good for big groups but can hold a larger family if you went in early. Anyway, the food so great! Overheard another guest ask the owner what their secret is and he just said "No secret, Everything is just homemade, made from scratch Mexican food!" So if thats what you like you have found your place! They give chips and salsa and also have a spicier salsa if you ask! YOM! Prices are decent and the service is great! These workers are always present and tending to everything you need! This place is about 25 mins away from where I live in the city but worth the entire drive! This place is such a gem. My husband and I were starved and needed to find a decent place to eat that didn't have a drive through. I did my usual Yelp, scroll through pictures, etc. when I got to Lisa's on the Yelp retrieval I wasn't really impressed with the pictures and had some sort of shady feeling about the fact that they did say they served menudo during the week. I actually yelped "menudo during the week" but the truth of some of the specials never happen when you get to the restaurant. Or the restaurant decides to "change" their menu due to product but they don't update their menu. Anyhow, I said "eff it- lets go, I'm starved." I can never turn down an opportunity for a taco. We go, find street parking (only form of parking in the area). Go inside and you instantly feel like you just got transported to a legit Mexican or Latin restaurant. It is so overt and ornate that you can't help but smile. The servers who seem to also be the owners is what got me past the pictures on Yelp. Most of the reviews were spot on about the great customer service and the "Cheers" environment. Service aside- they DO serve menudo! 7x a week!!!!! Hallelujah Also they have crispy tacos and I'm ALL about a legit homemade crispy taco with contija cheese. They did it right!!!!!! So in love. I was intrigued by the many 4 star reviews of this place, and being Cinco de Mayo we definitely wanted to eat Mexican food since we were in the area. But go and read all the 2 star reviews, I didn't. And maybe I felt misled by all the good reviews. Yes, the warm inviting hospitality & friendly staff is no doubt there as many Yelpers share, but we were disappointed in the taste of the food overall. Everything was bland. The Chile Verde had the right texture (cooked well for tenderness), but had no taste despite it being cooked in verde sauce, like it had no salt or any other seasonings. Hubby had the beef chimichanga & a chile relleno, both also very bland tasting. Portions are also on the small side, but probably the appropriate serving size of what you should be eating anyway right? About the best thing we ordered was the Strawberry Aqua Fresca which was sweet & very delicious. I think we should've made the drive to Celia's instead. read more
