My quest for Indian up and down the ghetto street is kinda like Goldilocks journey in the bears cottage.......each time I tried somewhere there would be one or two things I would change about it...than I tested Little India....JUST RIGHT. When you can impress your New York City friends with an outstanding Indian restaurant you know it's good! Thanks fellow Yelpers! If you always order Curry or Tanduri when you dine out for Indian food, break out of the rut and try Biryani. Now I don't know how you pronounce it, but I'll tell you that you can't go wrong with saffron rice, raisins & cashews, coconut garnish and plentiful shrimp (or chicken, lamb or veggies). The curry dishes were outstanding and the appetizers were perfectly fried and tasty. The tikona-think samosa with ground lamb re-heated nicely the next day. Naan is always good and was totally fresh. Take a walk on the spicy side and try the gobi paratha. Between the prices and the amazing food we will be back. In fact, my husband and I can't stop talking about it. The food is fantastic. They serve the best chicken tikka masala I've had in the Boston area. And the vegetarian entrees are particularly good (Bhindi Masala and Baighan Bharta for example). Even the rice and breads are super versus other local indian restaurants. The ambiance is good but not great. Good service and waitstaff for an ethnic restaurant by not find dining. Indian food is my favourite, and the Little India stands out from the many Indian restaurants in the area. They have some unique items on their menu - you won't find batata wada anywhere else, unless you're lucky enough to know someone who makes it - and their more common dishes are created with care and skill that really sets them apart. The Little India wasn't my first Indian restaurant, but it quickly became my favourite once I found them. The serving staff are helpful and friendly and always willing to explain the details of any dish you're getting. The bread is always fresh and warm, and they are careful to spice to taste. You will rarely be surprised by having too much spice, but if you like spice, you can ask for it and they will make you happy. This works out perfectly for my wife and me - both of us love Indian food, but my wife likes it somewhat milder than I do, and we never have problems with the level of spicing. As my tastes have changed over the years, I've found that the Little India has something to accomodate me. To start your meal, their mixed appetiser platters are filled with goodness. As mentioned above, you can try their very good batata wada, which you won't find at other restaurants. Their vegetable pakora is wonderful, crunchy but moist, flavourful, never overcooked. The least of their appetizers, the ubiquitous papadum, comes to life with their excellent condiments - their onion chutney is is full-bodied but not hot, and their mint chutney is spicy. Most places have hot onions and sweet mint, which isn't authentic. The Little India makes a good peshawari naan - not too sweet and not syruppy, but sweet and light. Their poori is light and never greasy. One of my personal favourites is their keema naan - lamb-stuffed bread that melts in your mouth. Their more common breads, like aloo or plain naan, are soft, warm, and flavourful. Personal entree favourites are their chicken saag, where the chicken is always tender and the saag is brought to that perfect state where it has just a hint of its spinachy origins blended in with a perfect blend of spices. Their chicken tikka masala is less candylike and sweet than what many places make, making it a more serious and in my opinion satisfying meal. The Little India's biryani is a real treat, with the individual components maintaining enough identity to make the whole dish seem somewhat symphonic - local variations returning to an underlying theme repeatedly until you reach satiety. *Any* of their lamb dishes would be worth choosing. For dessert you've got more choices lately, and I've branched out a bit, as they've redone their desserts, but my tried and true favourite kulfi is still available. A full meal at the Little India delivers a series of wonderful scents and flavours. There seems to be nothing they don't do superbly well. I haven't had as much time lately to go there as often as I'd like, so I've been getting take-out from them. If you've never been, you're missing out and should try them out. I have loved this Indian restaurant for the past 15 years, everything they do is great. The chicken tikka masala is so creamy and delicious. The chutneys are great, the location is wonderful. Their new dish, chili cheese is excellent. It's pieces of paneer with some other veggies, and chilis. I had my last meal here for a while, as I am relocating, and wanted to come here one last time for ol' times sake. The prices aren't as steep as some reviewers say. Had dinner here for the first time. Visiting the area. Typically I love Indian food especially chicken tikka kabobs . Clearly this restaurant has no clue how to make it. Chicken did not arrive on a sizzling pan with mixture of peppers and onionsas it normally does . This dish arrived on a cold plate with a mixture of onions and what appeared to be lettuce or cabbage and onions. The chicken was not even warm. I sent it back. They returned the same dish a few minutes later barely reheated. I sent the dish away and cancelled the order. Will never return even though my son whom we were visiting lives only a few blocks away and we all love Indian food. Additionally I found the drinks and entrees overpriced. read more

I've been going to Little India since I was a newborn - and my parents have been going there since before they got pregnant. Little India is the best Indian food I've ever had, and I recommend it to anyone who will listen to me. Aside from the delicious, authentic cuisine, the atmosphere is nice, the decor is beautiful, and the staff are so friendly that they know us by name. Our favorites are the mulligatawny soup, the chicken tikka kabobs, and channa sag, sag aloo, and aloo gobi. Their naan is also delicious! There have been many different Indian restaurants on Moody Street - some have come, some have gone - but there's a reason Little India has stayed; it's the best! read more

This is my favorite Indian place in Waltham (granted I've only been to two). Their selection isn't huge, but whatever is offered is always so so good that I wish I had a bigger appetite to make the 9 dollar buffet really worth it. Don't get me wrong, $9 is a great price, I just wish I could eat more. I've been to the Indian place across the street from Little India too, but in my opinion, the sauces are a little too runny, also, the place feels a little sterile to me, not sure why. First time ordering from Little India. The butter chicken was delicious and chicken curry was superb. The poori bread was good and the garlic naan was decent too. Surprisingly, the basmati rice was excellent,- seasoned correctly and not dry or sticky. We will order from them again! read more

For the best accuracy, my opinion is written in my detailed reviews. based on the shining reviews of little india, we decided to go here and whet our indian food-loving taste buds on this epicurean wonder. we arrived at about 5:30 on saturday, fearing an enormous wait based on the other reviews, but to our surprise and delight there were only a handful of tables that were taken (three to be exact, all in the main dining room - two taken up by couples, one by a man waiting for more companions). we were seated, water and menus given. As the water was poured, i asked for a coffee, she a tea. yes, black please, no milk in either. it was roughly 5:35 at this point. we perused the menu, not a bad selection, but we hastily made our decision, closed the menus to be universally understood that we were ready to order. a little after 6 the same waiter who gave us water reappeared and took our order: she likes it HOT (as the description said in the menu) so she has the chicken vindaloo; i get the chicken tikka masala at her suggestion. again he asks us what we wanted to drink. at this time, some other people arrive, some even had their take out. we were able to comment on the atmosphere of the restaurant, the decadent but simple lighting, the soft colors of the walls. very nice, not overbearing and bizarre art adornments. very comforting, but not exciting enough to not notice that our coffee arrived at 6:30. by 6:45 our food arrives. her vindaloo was spicy in taste but not in heat. it was rather bland, the flavor of curry just a slight note. as for my tikka masala, it was orange, which i'm later told was supposed to be more of a reddish color. however it was okay. also a tad bland, not a celestial blend of spices or seasoning whatsoever. the nan was good, hot as expected, and decent for dipping since my masala had more sauce than chicken. a single bowl of rice was given between us, not much more than probably 8 oz., definitely less than we needed so the nan was a must to compensate. the display of the food with their individual dishware was beautiful. very nice touch. however, it seems like they were trying to compensate for the lack of service. staying at this place for almost two hours seemed like quite a chore for lackluster service and adequate food. all plates were the 10-15 dollar range, but definitely not worth that much. about 2-3 dollars too expensive. neither of us could understand the draw of this place, other than the atmosphere, which was sublime. in fact, we were wondering what mother india was looking like. atmosphere: 4 service: 2 food: 2 display: 4 timeliness: 1 total: 2.6 read more

The food is sooooo good but the service is bad. They have a lot of language brake down. I really enjoyed this place. Try the fish Marsala, the nan is soft and and filling. We were huge fans of New Mother India which closed a few years ago. I have been looking for a good new spot in the area. Little Inda is that spot. We did take out on busy Friday night. The food was really good. Nice spices in the chicken Biryani and both the chicken Tikka and the vindaloo were very good. The sauces were rich and flavorful. The samosa were large and nicely fried - not too doughy. It did take a while to get the food as we had a larger order and there were a lot of diners and the restaurant and a good number of take out spots. I would definitely go back. It seems like a pleasant spot to eat with a smaller group. I am not a fan of any lunch time buffet - I feel like the food just sits around so I cannot judge the one at Little India - but the dinner options were the standard items and well prepared. read more

Little India is one of my favorite local restaurants! We've eaten in the restaurant a few times, but mostly we do takeout or delivery. All of the foods we've tried have been delicious--channa saag, aloo gobi, dal makhani, and chicken mughlai are a few favorites. Everything is made well and perfectly spiced. (I like spicy foods, and even the medium spice level delivers a good amount of heat.) The staff has always been very pleasant, whether in the restaurant or doing takeout or delivery. read more

I've been here many many times, and regret not having posted a review. This is my absolute go-to place for Tika-Masala. That, and the nan bread is so soft and sublime that when the two meet, it's basically buttery and just exquisite. l went here with my father this weekend and we didn't have a very good experience. I've been to India and I consider myself pretty well educated on the cuisine. This food was really bland - which is something Indian food should NEVER be. All dishes come mild which for some people is good, but not for people that expect real Indian food. I ordered Shahi Paneer and my dad had the tomato saar soup and an order of tikona. All were bland and basically just not very good. The service was friendly and the mango lassi i got was enjoyable. We love this place. Our favorites are the chicken tikka kebabs which are flavorful and super yummy and the lamb curry. We also like the byranis and curries. I'm super picky about Indian food and there's nothing worse than an unsatisfying Indian dinner! We hadn't found a place we liked in Waltham until we tried Little India - this is definitely our new go-to place. Food was great- plenty of variety and choice of spiciness, easy ordering and pickup. Vegan and non vegan lovers: We were in the area and decided to try moody street's Little India. We pooped in for lunch and I was over the moon for their buffet. While I had to become a vegetarian for this lunch, the homemade food made it worth it, as I am vegan! The wait staff helped me as much as possible and were patient with all my questions. I was beyond thankful. If you have any food allergies or are vegan, you understand how much of an annoyance you can seem to restaurant wait staff. At the buffet, I loved the naan, basmati rice the chana Saag - made with spinach and chickpeas -- possibly a little animal byproduct (can't know for sure, though). My husband was able to eat more than me and he liked everything the buffet had to offer except the chicken masala. He said the masala left a lot to be desired but given the variety and quality of every other option, he was more than happy with everything else. read more

So many vegetarian options including a fresh lettuce, cucumber, tomato and lemon salad, assorted pickles, samosas, pakora in a spicy flavorful sauce, garbanzo beans in an amazing sauce, perfectly cooked and spiced mixed vegetables, two rice dishes, also chicken tikka masala, and two other meat dishes, plus some desserts, and Nan.
