Yes...Yes...Yes
Its 3:25am on (Sunday night) Monday morning, I just had one of the best meals ive had in New york and Little Morocco is open for business. Settle in, I got a story to tell.
After a long night line cooking in the city i make my painstaking trek back to astoria and as always the trains are running way late. Another 70 hour work week is over, im off monday, and I want somthing to eat....in fact....im starving. I get off the train at astoria blvd ,its about 2:15am and im thinking about stopping in at the neptune for a quick bite.."nah no burgers and fries" i hate eggs, dont really know what i want, so i sort of slowly saunter by, half-thinking to go in and order a monster cheeseburger. Another 6 blocks pass and im home, finally. You would think a cook's fridge is jam packed with all sorts of goodies....well it is :-), but its a bit late to break out the cast iron pan and truthfully I hate my stove, so I rummage a bit, but nothing here will do...what next? I remember a friend I work mentioned something about a great merguez place on steinway i should check out on my day off tomorrow so I looked up the name to see where im heading. Of course im on yelp so im reading reviews and becoming really excited about the place. Im scrolling and reading, then I see it....simply magical words, a fellow reviewer mentions the phrase "open late"......hmmmmmmmmmmmm, could it be?? its already 2:45, no way.....mayb-ok lets just call.
Voice of God- "Little Morocco..."
me- "oh shi-Oh hi! what time you serve untill?"
VOG-" 4am"
EEK!! I dont even think I said goodbye, i quickly threw my coat and clogs back on and was out the door, its only about a 4 minute walk but I was pacing a pretty healthy jog. I make it to the front door and the owner is leaning against the glorious meat counter, enthusiastically waving me to come inside as i peer in. Of course, I haul major ass inside. I already know, this is gonna be good......very good. Salutations exchanged, I let him know what im in the market for, a "famous" merguez hero and hmmmm how bout one of those equisite looking lamb kabobs screaming at me from within the glass display case. He nods and swings around to add the merguez links and metal skewer to the hot grill. He comments to me how lucky I am because im getting all the merguez he has left for the "day" a healthy standard portion plus a few extra links, I smile with glee as we share a chuckle. A few minutes pass and we are exchanging some chit chat. He goes back to the merguez, and removes the loaf of bread he placed about the grill to get hot a moment earlier. He fills it with salad and hot sauce (as per his inquiry) and then fills it with those small wonderful links of merguez. He comments to me that the smell of this sandwich never gets old to him, and yes you better believe i know why. He quickly wraps it in foil after cutting the sandwich in half, and tells me to eat it here if I have a long trek back home, "this sandwich is no good when its cold" he instructs me. "No worries im very close by" i tell him as he finishes bagging the sandwich. A moment later and the lamb skewer comes off he grill. Its placed in its little container after a little bed of salad goes down. The total comes to 6.50 (so damn cheap its almost a shame) and I give him a 10 and tell him to keep the change (we cooks look out for each other haha) He is very kind, and instructs me as he hands me the bag "Be good, eat the merguez first, then the meat (kabob) not the other way" "Yes ahmo!" I reply while bundling back up and heading out. I literally run back to my apartment, so excited its almost embarrassing. I dig into the sandwich immediately, and yes it is absolutely everything you have heard it is up to this point. The french bread is a nice crusty roll, the salad is fresh, i love the red onions, and the olives work well with the meat, and the hot sauce is a must! The merguez itself is in a word.....scrumtrulescent. Not at all gamey or over seasond like SO many other ones are. Well grained interior with superb flavor and cooked expertly. This is simply, great food, you really must eat this. As per instruction (im not one to argue with a master) I polish off the entire sandwich before moving on to the chunks of grilled lamb kabob. Still warm, perched atop a bed of salad that has absorbed a decent amount of meat juices (yet is suprisingly not at all wilted) juicy, tender grilled pieces of lamb, still pink on the inside and not at all fatty or chewy. In fact they are in the very sense of the word, tender, and perfectly so. I just downed an entire merguez sandwich and still this lamb was being devoured piece by piece faster than I wanted it to be. I would go back for this alone if I knew they were out of merguez, these were some of the best lamb kabobs I have ever had, even if i did sprinkle a little salt on them.
"Just go here already."
Im going back tomorrow to get more meat, and try the falafel sandwich. I love you Little Morocc read more
