Great local sushi, very good quality on sushi at a decent price. Could have better hours

I love this place because I know the owners very well but often they won't deliver and it's unfortunate because I live literally .6 miles away from the place; it's about three blocks. And 90% of the time they don't have somebody there to deliver to my house. But regardless, their sushi is pretty good and I like their sake collection. read more

I've been here several times before and each time I go, the food is always served pretty well for the most part. I always get the Cha Han, which is the shrimp fried rice and it's delicious. I've gotten rolls here too in the past, like the spider roll, shrimp tempura roll, salmon roll, the Alaskan roll and others. They all taste pretty good for the NWI area. There's really not a lot of good or decent Asian cuisine restaurants around here, besides House of Kobe (definitely the best, but very pricey), but for the price range that this restaurant offers, I'd say that their food is overall worth it. read more

I've been to lunch a few times and today, an early dinner. Every time we've received lovely service and delicious food. Each meal I've had has tasted fresh. At lunch time I get the special that comes with miso soup AND a salad (GET THE GINGER DRESSING!) along with three sushi rolls. My favorite are the spicy rolls. Salmon, tuna, yellowfin, whatever! They have some crispy stuff (fried Panko?) and the spicy mayo which I also order extra on top. Extra wasabi, the soy sauce is on the table and I am set. It's filling and satisfying. The ginger dressing on the salad peaks your appetite. The miso soup is earthy and soothing. I often order the tempura veggie appetizer which includes sweet potato, onion ring, green beans, broccoli all with this delicate, light batter fried to perfection. The vegetables are still nice and slightly crisp and the batter coating is delightfully crunchy. You dip them in a soy based sauce served on the side. Today, we also ordered the shrimp shumai which are tiny little steamed dumplings. SO. GOOD. My mother was my early dinner date and she is the pickiest human, and she was very impressed with all the food. Mom ordered a dish featuring a variety of tempura items served over white rice. It included all of the aforementioned veggies plus four big juicy shrimp. She LOVED her meal. Another visit, my friend and I ordered the kids a plate of chicken teriyaki to share. The waitress was so accommodating! She brought out this bento box with the teriyaki, one section of white rice and one of the noodles. It was unexpected and so thoughtful of her to think of the convenience of this plate for the children! This restaurant is small and adorably cozy with large fish tanks, a sushi bar and numerous booths. Who does not love booths? It seems pretty neat and clean. There is a very sweet woman who served me the first few times and while I cannot remember her name, she was so sweet to me and my friend and our two small toddlers. Instead of a dirty look when I told her about spilled ketchup (they have a kids' menu with chicken nuggets and fries) she told us don't worry about it. No problem. And proceeded to hand us some hard candies for us all. She spoke to our children like a fellow mother. These things really matter to me when I patronize businesses with my small children. I will continue to return to Little Tokyo. Not just do they have delicious authentic Japanese food, but they are genuinely NICE. Such a beautiful thing to see and experience this day and age. Wow, have to disagree with some of the other reviews. I could care less about groupon etc. too. I think that this place is, by far, the best sushi place in NW IN. It's the only place that starts to come close to what you get in Chicago. Yes, don't expect the service to be 5 star as they are understaffed, the waitresses are young and the owner can confuse them but if you are patient and forgiving you can get some great sushi. Take your time, order a few things at a time and relax and enjoy the great food and experience. The rolls are really delicious too, at least the few I've tasted. I don't go for the americanized cream cheese stuff though. The sashimi and sushi are all fresh and delicious! Completely love this place, it's honestly one of my new favorites. The place was extremely empty and quite outdated. There was a fish tank in the back that was extremely dirty and had a koi fish in it that was too big for the tank itself. The wait service was not friendly and took a very long time. The silverware was dirty and old. We ordered a Philadelphia roll and the avocado was brown. The miso soup was good, but not great. We ordered tempura udon bowls. The broth and udon noodles was good, but again not great. The tempura was oily and the batter was too fried. At the end their credit card system was having issues and it took a long time to get my card back, which made me nervous since I couldn't see what they were doing with my card. Amazing sushi!! I have tried many different rolls here. The specialty rolls are delicious. I highly recommend the firecracker roll and the bill roll. I also enjoy the gyoza. The service is slow, but totally worth it. Friendly staff. Intimate atmosphere. They also have great lunch specials. There have been groupons as well for this place! Good deal overall as well. I hate doing this. I don't like to give little places that are obviously struggling bad reviews. But I feel obligated to warn people--Little Tokyo is not so good. I was so excited to see a sushi place open near my hometown and I had very high hopes. The small yet empty dining room was my first sign that things might not be tops at Little Tokyo. Now, I am by no means a sushi expert, but I have had my fair share of yumminess (hello, Tank!) in this fair city of ours, so I feel I have a somewhat discerning sushi palate. The fish at Little Tokyo is not all that. It's not very fresh tasting (why oh why did my saba taste a bit like canned tuna? I mean, I like canned tuna and all, but not when I'm expecting delicious mackerel!), it's sort of sloppy looking and they didn't even have one of the maki I ordered. The food was edible but certainly not memorable and the service was simply abysmal. I mean TERRIBLE. We were the ONLY people in the whole place--the water glasses should've stayed full, plates should've been cleared away... I wasn't sure if it was our waitress' first day on the job or if she was just reeeeally dumb. And I feel terrible saying something like that, but gawd--this was the exchange: "Do you want anything else?" "Nope, we're all finished, thank you." [awkward silence].... Best sushi around. Period. Haven't had a roll I didn't like. Service is good if you are the only person there and the guy is working. If the women are waitressing it is chaos. We went almost an hour without one of our rolls and they kept coming and asking us if we had everything. Yet never fixed the problem. Seems to be slow every time. Every time I am in the area I stop by Little Tokyo. Love the food. Love the laid back atmosphere. Love the wine. During each visit, we have a chance to sample the latest offerings and give an opinion. I was not happy with Little Tokyo. My first impression of Little Tokyo was this place needs a makeover and then what is that smell. The place is cluttered and needs cleaning. I copied this part from a yahoo review. If I could give this place less than 1 star I would. I used to eat here all the time, and so I inquired about a job and got it. I worked here for a brief 2 days. In those 2 days I witnessed a waitress drop food and get SCREAMED at in the face in front of the house full of customers, meat and veggies being prepared on the same surfaces, and a big pile of wasabi in the middle of the kitchen that was being RE-USED from other people s plates. Seriously, I tried to throw it in the garbage and, just like the crying waitress previously mentioned, was screamed at and told to put it in the pile. Oh, and did I mention he never had me fill out a W-2, and when I asked him about it he said he didn't even know what that was. Someone should call the health department on this guy. Pretty pricey for what you're getting. The sushi was ok, but nothing to truly rave about. Nonetheless, the service was good and it was a clean restaurant. It's nice to not have to go that far for decent sushi. It is MUCH better than the sushi at House of Kobe. Just wish they had a greater variety. If you don't mind a sticky table, dirty dishes, and a chef that doesn't know the menu you might be ok here. I ordered a Crazy Roll. The menu describes it as pepper tuna, avocado, with spicy tuna on top. When brought to me it had cucumbers in it and no avocado. I said this is supposed to have avocado and he said no it didn't come that way. I pointed out the menu said it did so he did give me a side which was nice but I don't really care for cucumber. The spicy tuna and the wasabi were pretty bland too. It wasn't inedible just not good enough for me to go back. read more

The food was ok, nothing that special. I was really worried because I told the waitress that I'm allergic to shellfish and she kept pointing out things on the menu that were 'very good' and they all contained shellfish. I ended up getting tuna, salmon and a chicken thing that was cooked with rice and fish eggs. It was pretty good. I've had better in Chicago of course. I don't know what all the bad reviews are about but I read there is a new chef? Everything was wonderful here. We went in an hour before close & had a younger server. Usually younger kids get annoyed/just want to go home. He was AWESOME! We ended up leaving him almost a 50% tip. Sushi was the best in the region. Hands down. I came here today (instead of going to Dragon Bowl in Munster) because I like their lobster roll. I waited a good 15 minutes for the waitress to come and ask me if I wanted a drink. There were 3 other booths with 2 people in each. I ordered the few things on the menu I like, my favorite lobster roll didn't come instead she brought 2 dragon rolls, I can't eat them. I'm allergic to avocado. The waitress said 'you don't want dragon roll?' I said 'no, I'm allergic to avocado and I ordered lobster rolls'. She said she wrote down dragon and asked if I could have said it wrong......um no. I didn't. The chef in the back brought my correct order out very quickly, was super sweet and very nice. He redeemed my visit, slightly. I have been to this place about 20 times. The only time I have service that is horrendous is when this same woman (who seems to be there all of the time) is working. The key,I think, would be to sit at the sushi bar or come at night when she isn't working. She had her son or grandson with her one time and it was awful. He ran and screamed the whole time. She did nothing. Miserable. Food is 3-4 stars. Service with the woman is 1 star. read more

Food is always fresh. Sushi is delicious! Variety is great. Patience is a must though. Owner is usually alone doing everything.

First you need to be aware of the cultures. They are laid back and there can be a language barrier. Not a biggy. Maybe it's a sign to relax, slow down and enjoy. I never liked sushi until I tried this place. The plum wine is excellent also. Everytime my friends and I go there the chef is bringing us a new roll. Never disappointed. We usually leave stuffed. I come here very often with a friend and we absolutely love it. While service is slow they are very nice. The woman who is always taking orders always remembers us and asks about our sports and school. She also has on multiple occasions giving us free soup since we go in around closing. I chose to dine in while on a road trip and I was a little disappointed. The service was super slow. Maybe because there were only two people cooking and serving. The same guy who was serving us and two other tables was the same person making our sushi. The lava sushi and the dragon roll sushi were good but the avocado on my dragon roll seemed like is was just slapped on. The entree I ordered was the chicken katsu and even though the presentation was pretty the chicken was tough and the dish was loaded with salt. I also ordered mochi ice cream but I had to cancel it because I had been in the restaurant for 2 hours waiting for my food and service even though there were only two other tables. When I asked for my bill they said sorry because they forgot to get my ice cream. I put two stars because the bathroom and the dining room were both really clean, and parking was easy, but the service was way to slow for only three tables, and the food wasn't up to par when it came to taste. Stoped in for lunch to take advantage of my Groupon for this place and I was sadden to find the place so empty. Service couldn't have been more prompt and attentive, but that's not difficult I quess when I'm one of only a few customers. Given I'm local, from Munster, the staff took to ask if I had an impression of what folks in the area felt about Little Tokyo. I shared that some felt the service had become a bit slow and inconsistant over time, but that over all the food quality and taste was good. She was pleased to get some feedback and I'd like to look upon this as a gesture by Little Tokyo to right it's ship and return to a more conscientious, prompt, and pleasent service. I throughly enjoyed my spicy shrimp roll. My Seafood tempura had a delightful batter and crusting to it. In the mood for a noodle dish, they were happy to create a dish off menu simply by what I had a taste for. What arrived was a deliscious mildlly spicy dish spotlighted by a yellow curry featuring shrimp, chicken, pork, and vegetables much akin to a signapore noodle, All in all a great lunch. I will definately return, not just because I purchased a few more Groupons for Little Tokyo, but because I feel it important to support hard working local bussiness which aren't carbon copies of everywhere else to eat. Sure I'll have my occational Panda Express. Yet, it's nice to know that living in Munster, should the mood for sushi. sashimi, tempura, or an asian noodle dish strike me, I need only to jump over to Little Tokyo nearby to satisfy that urge. read more

My family and I love this place. John is amazing, very kind and sweet. I love the spicy shrimp rolls and hand rolls. My husband loves the spicy salmon and tuna hand rolls. The chicken teriyaki is great! The deep fried banana for dessert with ice cream is the bomb. I also can eat the chicken fried rice non stop. The edamame is always fresh when I've had it. I don't think anything on his menu is not good. It's small and we love that. I think the prices are reasonable for the quality of the food. read more

Will definitely never go here again! A friend and myself decided to stop there and get a to go order. Not only did it take them 45 minutes to get our order together the woman (I am assuming the owner or manager) was very rude. She had the audacity to tell us to grab a menu on our way out and call ahead next time. So that tells me if we were to stay there and eat that it probably would have been even longer than 45 minutes.
