This is a really nice Chinese place to sit and have a nice meal with your family. The service was great and the food was fresh and delicious. We had the fried egg plant which is a must try. The Szechuan hot pot was good but felt could've been better. Spiced fried Pork belly was a little less crispy than expected. The dish that stole the show was the house special flounder fish, delicious buttery sauce with the right amount of spice and big chunks of flounder. All in all a satisfied meal! read more

This place isn't just good Szechuan, its just good food. I am thrilled with the bamboo fish and I have had trouble ordering anything else. I have tried my companions food (Chile chicken, duck hot pot, pork dumplings, 3 pepper beef) and they are all delicious but I keep coming back to the bamboo fish. The dry fried eggplant is amazing and the ribs are just delicious. I always order the vegetable of the day, which is usually sauteed in crushed garlic and it hits the spot every time. The vegetable of the day isn't advertized so you have to ask the server if there is any winter spinach or pea shoots (or the like) and they will let you know what they have. Its not cheap, but if you are looking for a meal to dream about later, created by a famous chef none- the- less then this is the place for you. read more

I had some really high expectations coming in here and I'm pleased to say that I was thoroughly BLOWN AWAY! There were 10 of us so we decided to get many dishes to share. We may have gone overboard though as we started to run out of room on our very large table. I ordered the Cilantro Fish Rolls and the Pan Seared Pork Belly. These dishes were amazing! The fish rolls were a fantastic blend of flavors rolled up in a thin crispy roll. The pork belly was some of the best I've ever had. It was cooked to perfection and full of so much flavor. And the veggies sautéed with the pork belly made me feel just slightly less guilty! There were so many other dishes on the table I honestly can't remember what all we had. What I do remember is the explosions of spices and chilies in every bite. There was more than enough for each of us to take a hefty portion home for another meal. This place was definitely worth the trip to Short Pump!! read more

It's gone down...after they opened another 1-2 stores. Today I finally came back, and surprised to see the worst waiter they got, now the manager! I felt the energy was bland, they didn't seem want to be there, just like the manager. We waited 5 - 10mins for our waiter to show up, same attitude. Food was not as good, for example, cucumber cut differently, and piled with garlic. Pan fried mushroom buns were dry and NOTHING like what I expected. Tofu skin was slightly dry as well. Bamboo fish was ok. If you want to try Peter Chang's, find the one they have the big chefs in house, because it makes all the difference. read more

Updated Review. I had lunch at Peter Chang's a few days ago and was less than impressed. Last night I returned, just before 5:00 p.m., and had to wait just a few minutes to be seated. (Apparently they had just reopened from an afternoon break.) We (two of us) were seated at one of the large tables with two other dining parties. No problem. It worked out very well. Within a few minutes of our seating the place was packed and a long wait-list had developed. I had hot and sour soup and the deep fried duck plate. The soup was good, and seasoned well. The duck was good, served with a delicious duck-sauce topping. My dining partner chose one of the beef pots. Both of us were very disappointed in this dish. I would never order it again. It was more overrun with boring overcooked vegetables than tasty beef. At the end of the meal I fished some of the small remaining bits of beef out and left the remainder to be discarded. Service was improved on this my second visit. The wait-person was attentive and helpful. Service was a bit slow, but everyone seemed to understand that the room essentially was seated within a few minutes and some delays were inevitable. I chatted briefly with the manager, a very pleasant, attentive young man. He definitely takes an active role in this place in a very good way. Other staff persons are also alert and willing to help. Comments: - Not for me. I am not joining the Chang Gang. Somehow this place just doesn't click for me. I don't know "art", but I know what I like when I see it. - Portions. I have observed that they are quite large! Three (or maybe four) persons could have dined on my duck dish. Yes, I know, Chinese food is typically shared. - Prices. Entirely within reason for the generous portions you receive. - No take out orders. A sign on the door indicates they are not doing take out, at least at this time. You can, of course, take out leftovers from your table. read more

Holy cow, this place rocks. I had heard about this place in passing on a recent trip and decided to stop by and check it out. If only I could get quality and unique Chinese like this back home, then I would be in heaven. This is top notch cuisine, how it is supposed to be done. It is not your typical sweet and sour, general tso's, sesame, etc. type food you'll find rampant in the US. One glance at the menu, and I was stoked. Crispy Pork Belly? Sign me up Hot and Numbing dish with fish, shrimp, beef and a load of veggies? Hell yeah The food was awesome, and I think half the restaurant made comments on my hot and numbing dish as they passed my table. I'm sure the rest of the menu was great, but my meal was one of the top dining experiences I've had in a while. Peter Chang's is top notch in my book. Check it out and enjoy. read more

We stopped in for dinner on a Wednesday night and boy did it not disappoint. We got the spring rolls, scallion bubble pancakes, dry-fried eggplant, Szechuan double cooked pork belly and hot and numbing beef brisket in hot pot. Everything was really good, but the eggplant, pork belly and brisket were out of this world amazing. Definitely recommend if you love spicy flavorful food. My husband ordered another order of the pork belly to take to work with him tomorrow. Hugh provided excellent recommendations and service. Thanks you, Hugh! read more

After hearing the talk about Peter Chang, we decided we HAD to go. We had just moved to the area and this was our first place to try! It was Saturday evening, so it was busy! We waited about 20 minutes, but got to enjoy watching all the unique dishes coming out. Once we got seated, we ordered a spicy appetizer which was OUT OF THIS WORLD with taste and presentation. Our meals were divine and we had so much leftover! This is no ordinary Chinese food!! Definitely give this place a try, don't be surprised if there is a wait..have patience, it's worth it. read more

So glad we found this hidden gem. We did a little research ahead of time on yelp to see what we might want to try. The servings are HUGE. You could order to sides of rice and one entree for a couple with an appetizer if you wanted to. Also don't look at the hot recommendations on the menu they can change anything and make it less or more hot. Note: 2 hot is HOT! This would be a great place to go with a group or two couples. read more

I've been here twice and the first time I came the food was amazing and the second time I came the food was also amazing but I have to take the star off cause the waiter I was with was God awful. There was 3 of us and when we asked for the rice that was suppose to come with the dish, the moron only brought 2 bowls of rice. read more

Finally had a chance to try the famous Peter Chang restaurant and it's true, it's awesome! If you've never had Szechuan style cuisine, it's distinctive from other Chinese food with the chili oil and Szechuan pepper which gives a slight numbing sensation and the spice level slowly builds with each bite. It's super addictive! We arrived around 6pm on a weekday night and this place was very busy but we didn't need to wait long for a table. FOOD -Wonton soup: flavorful dumplings and broth. -Scallion bubble pancake: the presentation delivers a "wow" factor but flavor-wise, it's rather oily and bland. -Szechuan hot pot: love the crunchy lotus root and that Szechuan pepper gives it good heat. -Eggplant with ginger and garlic: the flavors of this dish make the eggplant taste so meaty, love it. The entree portions are HUGE - we had lunch leftovers for the 2 days! It's definitely a great spot to bring a group and do a family-style meal. Service was pretty good overall and our server kept our water glasses full the whole night - I definitely needed some water (milk would've been a better choice) to keep the spice under control :) So yes, Peter Chang gets two thumbs up from me! I look forward to trying more of the menu during my next visit. read more

Went with family. Best in a large group. Had a reservation's-good thing!- and seated immediately. Portions are large and perfect for sharing. We loved the dry friend eggplant, green beans, the tea duck, seafood pot, and golden mountain pork. All were delicious! The seafood pot was the only thing that was spicy and it was just a hint too spicy for me. It was, however, the most flavorful dish we ordered. I would return and continue to explore the menu. I would only dine in with a large group (so I can order lots and taste everything). The location is unassuming and too far for takeout for me, but I saw several patrons get takeout. read more

While I have not had dinner yet, I am going to rate the lunch sine I have enjoyed it several times. First, it is crowded so arrive early or late. I always order off the lunch specials, a huge portion with an egg roll (fried) and soup ( either wonton or egg drop). Including ice tea...under $10. A choice of fried or white rice. All well prepared. I am waiting for Peter Changs to open near the Boulevard so I don't have to travel to the West End for dinner. read more

O.....M.....G!!!!! Best Sichuan food I have ever had. I loved it's authenticity. We shared the following:crispy pork belly, fish and cabbage soup, soup dumplings, a mixture called hot dumbning, and Peters Duck in stone pot. I loved all of the food. It was all cooked perfectly. Even the rice was steamed just the way I like it. VERY CLEAN BATHROOM!!!!!! We will most definitely come back here. There is copious amounts of food when you order. You will have enough to take it home. There is usually long wait for tables, so make a reservation if you don't wish to be tormented by the delicious food passing in front of you for long. read more

I went with coworkers for lunch. We received fast, polite service. Everyone could find something to enjoy despite having different dietary restrictions. Definitely get a scallion pancake! I'm dying to know how they make them! They are fun and delicious. I had shrimp and broccoli, figured I'd test out the seafood. This is a wonderful go-to Chinese restaurant!! We eat in, we order out, AND they make these wonderful little sweet cakes that are TO. DIE. FOR. Little balls of fried sweet dough coated in a sugar mixture. OMG so good! If you have any leftover, just pop in the microwave for 10 second or a little less and boom just like fresh. So there was much hype when Peter Chang was the chef at China Star. He apparently has a big following even to the point where Andrew Zimmer paid him a visit at this location when he shot Bizarre Foods DC. So, I had to check it out since I was in the area. The place was pretty busy when we stopped by and there was a short wait. I ordered the Dan Dan Noodles, Fish Filet soup with picked cabbage, Ma Po Tofu, Bamboo Fish, Crispy Pork Belly, Chicken Lettuce Wraps, Special Spinach stir fried with garlic, and Pan Fried Dumplings. Everything was great and nothing was overly spicy. The only thing poor was actually the soggy white rice. The Dan Dan noodles were ordered sans spicy and peanuts. The flavor was really good. It's an appetizer portion though. The soup was flavorful and delicate at the same time. The fish was cooked perfectly, and also very delicate. There was a sour taste from the pickled cabbage. The Ma Po Tofu was very good. They used silken tofu instead of the firmer tofu that Hong Kong uses, but they also added fermented black beans. I think I prefer HK's version since they add leeks and is a bit more spicy. The Bamboo fish was probably the best dish. Large chunks of crispy fried fish with spicy seasoning including salt and pepper. The fish was piping hot, but moist. The Crispy pork belly....I felt guilty eating. Seasoning is identical as the Bamboo fish. You can taste the slight gameness of the pork. The chicken lettuce wraps had good flavor. Maybe missing some crunch due to lack of water chestnuts. Still good though The Spinach was very tasty. Good garlic taste and expertly prepared with the hot wok. Pan Fried dumplings had the good chewy wrapper. Meat inside was generic. The dipping sauce had some of that cumin flavored seasoning. I also saw many people order the Mountain Chicken, and I wanted to order it also, but I had already over ordered. I was told by the cute waitress that it's essentially a shredded version of General Tso's, but deep fried and made crispy. I'll order that next time, along with the blown up sesame pancakes Note that there are Chang owns several locations in the Richmond area, but this one appears to be the original and has the most Yelp ratings. read more

This place has no customer service what so ever. I tried to call in an order to-go and after calling five times and receiving a moaning noise, I decided to stop by since I was in the area. I told the young lady ( I believe she was the one making the noise/ sound/ moan) how that it would've been nice to have my order ready when I got there but her excuse it that it's been busy. Now, I may not have owned a restaurant before but I know "It's been busy" is not an excuse to give to your customers. TIGHTEN UP PETER CHANG!!! read more

This place had been in our go to list ever since we saw it on Bizarre Foods and we were not disappointed. For first time we ordered the popular things on menu like Scallion pancakes and dry fried eggplants both of which were really good and different from the usual Chinese starters. For main course we got the duck in stone pot which was very very good. We always appreciate amazing food when it is not just yummy but also cheap. So extra points for that :) We also tried to make dry fried eggplants at home but we were not successful, its not as easy as it looks :( We recently found out that there is a Peter Chang branch near our house and we just can't wait to go back , hopefully it will as good as this one. read more

I was craving good Chinese food and a friend found Peter Chang's restaurant on the web and we decided to go there for dinner since some of the reviews were decent and the food photos looked good. The menu was slightly different from the normal Chinese menus that we were used to seeing so we had to ask the waiter for help with dishes to order and he pointed us to what we thought would be good. We ordered soup dumpling and bamboo fish appetizers and they were really, really good. For the main courses we ordered Seafood in Stone Pot and Kung Pao Chicken and they were the best Chinese food entrees that we have ever eaten. So flavors from the spices and other ingredients was marvelous in both of the dishes and the potion sizes were very good as well. We enjoyed the meal so much that we went back the next night for round two and enjoyed that as well. Service is great and the wait staff are always willing to help with ordering exactly what you want to eat. I wish they would open up a restaurant closer to Philadelphia so that I can enjoy their food more often. The bartender there told me that they also have other restaurants located in MD, DC, NC and I believe some other southern states. Please open something up north. It will become a big success if you do! read more

Excellent food tie meal and every time! Easily the Best Chinese food in Richmond. You have to try it

I am so sad to leave this review. My husband and I have loved this restaurant but ordered to go today our typical order and the majority was inedible. The mountain chicken that we normally love was so tough you couldn't chew it (we had to throw it away), they didn't actually CLOSE the soup container so more than 50% of the soup was in the bag (and made everything else a hot mess), the fried rice was a solid mediocre - a bummer of an experience when you spend more than $40 on takeout! I don't know that we will be back :( read more

The restaurant is busy, has decent service and reasonable quality of Chinese food. We got the shock of the hygiene when we noticed the cleaning person who came to cleanup used dishes and plate of previous diner. She has 3 level cart with dirty dishes on top rack. Clean one on middle rack and extra cleaning bottles and rags on 3rd rack. She picked up the dishes, cleaned the table and even picked the mop which fell on the floor. Later she took the clean dishes from the second rack with same hands and arranged the spoons fork and napkins for the next diner. The manager and owner seem to not care about the situation. They were busy with seated diner and rush of takeouts. I was at the end of my meal, my appetite was gone. I had asked for takeout boxes but seeing this I rushed out promising myself not to ever come to this place. I would definitely not recommend after seeing this unhygienic handling of dinner ware. read more

Very good option for Szechuan food. I prefer the downtown location but this one is more convenient. Love the bubble pancake and the spicy hot pots. Everyone talked about how great this restaurant was so I was very excited to try it. I was not impressed at all. We waited for about 45 minutes for a table which wasn't bad considering it was a Saturday night. I had the shredded tofu skins for an option- this is a cold dish but had good flavor. My husband ordered a three pepper chicken dish and it was majority onions. Minimal peppers and minimal chicken. He did not enjoy it. I ordered tofu (since I'm vegan) and broccoli and rice. The tofu was poorly cooked-- soggy. I couldn't even eat it. Can't go wrong with broccoli and white rice. I won't be in a rush to go back. read more

Great experience with great food. The service was really good considering we were a party of 14 people. We ordered the crazy beef with ghost peppers, puffed pancakes and dried fried eggplant. We shared each other's meals, seafood stone pot will be in my dreams since I live in Scottsdale, AZ. This is fine dining so the prices may reflect that. This was a solid choice for schezuan food. I could have sworn previously they had the chili oil dumplings but this time it was nowhere to be found- since this was the reason for the visit, I will say I was disappointed.
