Delicious and flavorful Chinese cuisine. My wife and I ordered the beef Szechuan and orange chicken. We were quite pleased with how tasty both dishes were! read more

Food was disgusting. Manager was disrespectful and some lady who works there butted into the conversation when I was trying to explain that food was not up to par. Manager Shawn did not try to give me anything else then he took my food to the back and stated he would pack it up. I would never eat anything that is taken from me and placed in the back. The waitress was super nice and tried to accommodate me but they yelled at her in the back. This is not a good representation of the Peter Chang near Scott's Addition. The menu is different and not up to par at all. Everything is too sweet and filled with a bag of onions. The guy that brought out food smelled awful. If I could give it zero stars I would. read more

Food was fantastic! Had "Dry fried eggplant " and schezuan pork. Both awesome. 3 stars because of two delivery issues (1) would've been a bit better with soy sauce which wasn't provided and (2) hard to eat without a fork. Seriously? And yes, I asked for utensils on my order. I definitely recommend because food was awesome even if you have to eat like a caveman. read more

Let me preface by saying that this is not the best Chinese food I've ever had (not by far). However, Yelp says five stars means "Woohoo! As good as it gets!". And for Richmond, this is certainly as good as it gets when it comes to Chinese. This was the first time I ate at a Chinese establishment since moving to Richmond. As a native, I have very high standards when it comes to eating at Chinese places, so I had been reluctant to eat Chinese in Richmond (a lot of places seemed like the all-too-typical Americanized fare). But after hearing such rave reviews about Peter Chang, I was excited to see what all the hubbub was about. The restaurant did not disappoint! I called ahead to make a reservation for my party of five, which was a good call because the restaurant was packed even at 8:30PM (granted, it was a Saturday night). We were seated within ten minutes. This restaurant is still very new! It's spacious, which is great for accommodating large groups (and necessary considering how much business this place is ALREADY getting). I really like the decor; it's very bright and colorful, and the butterflies hanging from the ceiling add a nice touch. The dining patrons seemed to be a mix of Caucasians and Asians; I even saw the Tan A workers/owners come to dine during my meal! You know this restaurant is legit if you can appeal to natives. I was SO excited that there was Chinese on the menu (since I don't know the names of dishes in English), and that the waitress for our table spoke Mandarin. (I have been desperately craving opportunities to speak Mandarin!) I was also ecstatic that "dishes" such as Orange Chicken and Beef w/Broccoli, although on the menu, did not feature prominently (it makes me cringe that so many people think those kinds of dishes are authentic Chinese food). I'm hoping that this will give many people the chance to experience REAL Chinese food (in Richmond at least). The variety of offerings available at Peter Chang's China Cafe will definitely allow people to branch out and try something they would never have found at "insert-name-of-Americanized-fast-food-chain-here"! Let's talk about the food (also, see attached photos). Sichuan/Szechuan food is known for its numbing spice. While I was prepared for the worst when my table ordered Peter Chang Duck in Stone Pot (three chili symbols), the dish wasn't actually that spicy. Surprisingly, the Fish with Sour Cabbage Soup (one chili symbol) was the spiciest dish of the night. We also ordered Crispy Pork Belly (one chili), which came served in this really cool bamboo cone, Tofu with Vegetable in Clay Pot (not spicy), and Basil Eggplant (not spicy). [Sidenote: we had to ask for chopsticks and white rice.] All the dishes were excellent, and many of the other Chinese people in my party remarked that they couldn't believe we were actually dining on this kind of Chinese food in Richmond, VA! I did not have input into the selection of dishes for dinner (since my friends picked all of the dishes), so I definitely will be back to try some of the things that interest me. Service was fine (again, I was happy to be able to speak Mandarin). Our waitress, Snow, was a little ditzy at times (bringing us four glasses of water but six teacups and six bowls for our party of five), but she was very sweet and helpful throughout the meal. The $7-8 lunch special dishes seem like a bargain too. This restaurant will definitely be a huge incentive for me to make more frequent trips to Short Pump. =) FYI: For those of you not literate in Chinese, the character underneath the chili pepper in the sign is Chang (spelled "Zhang" in hanyu pinyin), Peter's surname! P.S. I just had to go in and edit my review because Yelp does not support Chinese characters. =\ What is up with that?! read more

As someone that is Chinese and grew up in N.VA area where great authentic Chinese Restaurants are very accessible I have very high expectations. First off... if you are looking for American Chinese... sure you can come here... but I wouldn't come here just for that as you can literally go to any other Chinese Restaurant in the area and get the same stuff. Second, in my mind, if you are not wanting to eat spicy food to experience Szechuan (a province in China known for spicy food typically made with numbing peppercorns) Food, again I would go anywhere else but here. Third, if you are willing to experience what people call hot and numbing food... then read on. Peter Chang opened this restaurant in RVA in 2012... I was super excited because he also used to have a restaurant in Fairfax, VA where I have been to. After being in RVA since 2006, I was so excited that RVA was getting a legit Chinese restaurant. We've been going here since it opened whenever I have a craving for Chinese... still we manage to try new dishes ever so often and we are always surprised why we never tried the dish before. The problem is there are so many great dishes that we always want when we go and when it's just my husband and I going (and with our two year old since she was born) we can't order too much! I always look forward when my parents visit since we get to order more and potentially try something new. The most recent new dish we tried was the Flounder Fish and Sour Cabbage soup... seriously delicious... so good I would consider just getting the soup for a meal! The fish is super fresh and the spicy sour flavor of the soup just hits the spot for me, so flavorful. It is a clear broth soup... I'd bet it would be great if you were sick... help clear your sinuses haha. As for appetizers... these are musts... Dry Fried Eggplant (Spicy, sounds odd but this is a must... so crispy... imagine spicy French Fries), Crispy Pork Belly (Spicy, so delish... imagine fried thick cut spicy bacon... though doesn't taste smoky like bacon), Bamboo Flounder Fish (Spicy, imagine crispy fried pieces of fish with fluffy fish inside when you take a bite), Sautéed Diced Chicken w/Szechuan Chili Pepper (Spicy, make sure you get boneless, fried chicken pieces that are lightly battered). We've also had Crazy Beef w/Ghost Chili (good but super spicy with the ghost chili... the beef is the texture of the Mongolian beef you get at PF Chang's if you've been there), Flounder Fish Rolls (not spicy, my daughter's favorite), Scallion Bubble Pancake (curry sauce comes with it, not spicy), Beef Brisket Noodles or Grandma's Noodles are really good (the broth that it comes in has a hint of spicy and the hand pulled noodles are thick and delicious), Beef Tendon & Tripe in Szechuan sauce (I've had better...). As for entrees we've had Peter Chang's duck in stone pot (spicy, great broth that it comes in... I've had with with really fresh duck but I've also had it with Duck that I can tell is not so fresh... though if it's fresh it's great), Braised fish in Szechuan chili sauce (spicy, I recommend that you add tofu if you like tofu... big pieces of fish are provided imagine he bamboo fish but braised. It's delicious... especially as leftovers), Hot & Numbing Beef Brisket in hot pot (spicy and super flavorful broth, great as leftovers). I'll be honest usually we order a bunch of the appetizers and maybe one actual entree or maybe no entrees... it just depends on our mood. If you are serious about spicy food... if you try the recommendations you can't go wrong... but again be prepared this is authentic Chinese food! We've brought our daughter here multiple times... they usually get her a styrofoam cup of water but that's about it... so make sure you bring something to occupy your kids time:) As for ambience... it's pretty open similar to most Chinese restaurants you go eat at... it is bright which is nice! read more

Liu's Kitchen - Peter Chang's- Crispy Pork Belly, Bamboo Fish, Scallion Bubble Pancake - Asian Fusion Near Me - Glen Allen, Virginia

I would not recommend eating here if you have asthma. (I'll get to that later, but just wanted to put that out there just as a warning) We ate here last night. The restaurant was packed, so I just assumed that this may be a hidden gem. An infamous congressman was eating in there, along with his family and body guards. Needless to say, this could have caused the big crowd. The hostess sat us down and we ordered our drinks. My friend ordered a glass of wine. It took about 15-20 minutes to get our drinks, my friend never got her wine. Both of us have worked in the restaurant industry--so we didn't complain, we know what it's like to work in food service and it is not fun. So we put in our orders for food. Our appetizer came out extremely spicy. Usually I can handle spicy Asian food, but this was just unbearable. I couldn't eat it. An hour goes by and both tables beside us get their food, refills. Still, no wine for my friend and our waitress informs us that there is a wait. I notice that the servers seem really busy with the congressman and the Manager seems to keep hovering around him. After nearly an hour and a half, our food comes out. I ordered the Tofu and Asparagus dish and my friend ordered Bok Choy and Mushrooms. The portions were generous, but lacked in flavor. The waitress came out with my entree and 20 minutes later came out with my friend's food. I thought it was RIDICULOUS for the wait for the food, but then to have that long of a time frame between serving the two dishes was crazy. Because this is an Asian restaurant, we asked the waitress if we could get chop sticks. Just like the wine, we never got chop sticks. While eating our food, something was burning and the whole restaurant filled with smoke. Immediately, everyone started coughing, the smoke was intense and filled my lungs--I could barely breathe. I know this sounds crazy, but I am not creative enough to come up with something like this. Instead of people talking, all you heard was the coughing. I don't have asthma or any kind of trouble breathing--and I can only imagine how someone with asthma would feel. (At this point, I'm not for sure why I didn't get up and leave) The manager continued to hover around the congressman and his staff, not seeming to care about anyone else in his restaurant. So my last thoughts are: Crowd or no crowd, a restaurant should be staffed so that service is not impacted. Congressman or no congressman, no one should be treated any differently. My money is just as good as his. It should not take more than 2 hours for dinner, that's sort of ridiculous. The bottom line is--avoid this place, there are so many other places to eat in Short Pump. read more

Victim of It's Own Success In one word, Peter Chang's food is "inconsistent". Some parts are truly great: duck as it should be, with the skin on and fat rendered. Some taste rushed: green beans bland in the middle. Even in the same dish of twice cooked pork, one piece could be dry and chewy while another is crispy and juicy. Out of five entrees, I would say that I would order two of them again. These were 28. Peter Chang Duck in stone pot and 74. double cooked pork. The rest were fine. The good thing is that I won't have to order the same thing again because there is always more to try. Service is fast and that might be part of the problem. We've all heard the popular gossip and rumors about Peter Chang and how quickly he moves from restaurant to restaurant. Someone with so much #hype I thought the restaurant would be in a more appropriate location. Anyways, I first came here for my cousin's graduation and I couldn't eat much because the food was way too spicy for my liking. The decor on the ceiling was beautiful and the service was standard. Visiting here for the second time with the boyfriend, the restaurant's reputation definitely needed help.. Our server was terrible and the entire staff was lazy, standing around and talking to each other in front of guests, and not really paying much attention. I'm a server as well and I know I don't like to be bothered when I'm eating, but please do show some attention. The food was BEYOND salty. A little too much NaCl in here, you know? #chemjoke The food was overpowered by salt that I couldn't really taste anything. The menu had an array of food choices, which I think should be cut down as well. I'll definitely be visiting if the chef himself is cooking the food. read more

I've been here once before and don't remember liking it very much but I decided to give it a second chance today and was actually pretty pleased. The food was pretty good and the service was also pretty good. We ordered lo mein, Golden mountain chicken, and I ordered the curry on the summer menu. I loved my curry, it was nice and sweet but also spicy. The chicken that the curry came with though wasn't very impressive. The golden mountain chicken was really good, probably the closest thing you can get to a sweet and sour chicken or general tso chicken. The lo mein was also on point. We ordered pork dumplings as a starter and the dumplings here are some of the best dumplings I've had. As much as I loved the food here, the menu is really weird and makes it hard to choose what you want to eat. I wish the menu had more labeled pictures of the dishes here to make ordering a little easier. read more

Nice place - very good food - had a spicy shrimp dish that was very spicy, but that's my preference

Someone please explain this to me. The service is fine, the interior is whatever, but I have always just thought the food was "OK" and I've been back three times, and have tried something different (mostly the hot pots and chili based chicken dishes) every time, and am always underwhelmed, as people seem to worship this place. Maybe great Chinese cuisine and I were just never meant to be, or maybe I am just ordering all of the wrong things, but I am willing to give this "fantastic" place another chance based on "that one thing you just have to order," because I didn't think it much better than most other "Americanized" sub par Chinese food I've had. **UPDATE**: Really enjoyed it when I came back and got more adventurous with the menu. The table ordered a whole feast of different dishes, but my favorite things were the scallion bubble pancakes, the crispy pork belly, the combo hot pot and the dry fried eggplant. You should come with a large party and order a bunch of different dishes and try a little bit of everything, because it really does leave a very pleasant medley of delicious flavors on your palate. I will be back (if only for another round of that pork belly! Divine!) read more

Dry fried eggplant, scallion bubble pancakes, duck soup with tofu skin, golden mountain chicken, and their specialty fish. WOW. Any off their "dry fried" foods are out-of-this-world. And the rest of the dishes were fantastic- especially their specialty fish (spicy and sweet all in one). The only dish slightly below my expectations was the scallion bubbles, the curry sauce it came with was the star but I felt it just wasn't that flavorful. I think most the hype over them is because they're "bubbles". The only other negative is the location- which has been commented on, but the food makes up for it and more. I can say nothing more than GO. This will induce a chinese food orgasm like none you've experienced. Also their portions are fairly large, so expect leftovers. Note: if you are not a spicy fan, make sure to say that because most food they say is spicy is above the level of spicy most Americans are accostumed to. read more

Definitely a fan of Peter Chang. We had a blast at Supper Club last week and I've been thinking about it ever since. I can't even begin to tell you every dish that we ordered because with about 10 people in attendance and all of us ordering something different, you can imagine that we ate A LOT and were conquered by the food. Food: 1, Us: 0. We all left stuffed and very, very happy. Between all of us we had dumplings, pancakes, chicken dishes, soup, beef, spicy food, mild food, fish rolls, seafood pots, etc. You name it, we got it! I can totally see why they don't do take out orders. This place was jumpin' on a Tuesday night. Imagine a Friday or Saturday? Plus, the whole family style of eating really made the experience for me. Takeout just doesn't have the same effect. Unfortunately, the dish I ordered (#32) was not my favorite. It was a fish pot in curry. Mind you, it was GOOD, but we had so many other standout dishes that this one seemed to fall by the wayside. What were the standouts? The fried dumplings were amazing, the pancake was a really unique, and the soup was great. The service was equally as good as the food. I think she did a great job handling a group of 10. The food came out really fast (which would usually make me suspicious), but it was still delicious. Good job, Peter Chang! I'll be back. read more

Let me start off by saying I have never previously been to any Peter Chang's prior but I am officially hooked! From the atmosphere to the excellent menu choices, this is the place to be in Scott's Addition. I was excited when I heard they were moving into the Hofheimer Building - as that historic gem was in need of a good establishment to give her some much needed love. Walking into Peter Chang's, I can see they did just that. As a part residence of the building, they have kept her beautiful charm while adding a few pieces to make it their own. I was seated by the bar at a small intimate table for two, my companion and I. While he had heard plenty of times about Peter Chang's, I was relatively new to it. I glanced over my shoulder to see Peter Chang himself observing the workings of the day. Totally cool!! The menu was very diverse, and I was excited to see so many delicious items selected for the Scott's Addition location: from Dim Sum, to Salads, and Main Course. I immediately ordered an appetizer/Dim Sum of Duck and Fennel bites. They were amazing- crispy outer layer with a flavorful duck and fennel mix inside and topped with a sweet and slightly spicy sauce. It was phenomenal. I could have ordered a couple of more rounds of that but I knew the main course was not too far behind. Next, we had a cold noodle salad with soba noodles, celery and a chili sauce. This was a palette opener for certain. It was a tad spicier than I had anticipated but I was certain that minus the spice, we could have eaten it all in one large bite! The main course was #44 Duck with Onions, Carrots and Scallions (we had a small side of rice as well). Over the top amazing! It was fajita style and each bite of duck was as tender and juicy as the next. I was amazed at how much flavor was in each bite. It was outstanding! And our service was over the top! While Peter Chang's is synonymous with fancy cuisine and bold flavors, this new restaurant in Scott's Addition is proving to be an excellent addition to the neighborhood and the rest of his establishments. Excellent service, Outstanding Quality and Freshness, that is what you will find nestled right in the middle of the hustle and bustle of broad street's newest kid on the block! read more

My friend and I came here last night for dinner. I had heard great things about them from multiple people. Walking in I was shocked to see it so packed. If anyone was planning on going with more than a party of 4 a reservation would definitely be the best bet. Though they were packed my friend and I were seated within 5-10mins. Food took a total of about 5-6mins to come out after we had ordered it, very efficient. The food itself was not I imagined for Chinese food. I got the General Tso chicken with fried rice and my friend got the sesame chicken with fried rice and spring rolls. The spring roll were pretty good. You get 3 small rolls with a side of duck sauce. The chicken was not anything like general tso you'd get from a take-out/delivery place. I could tell it was real chicken pieces and it was cooked well, but the flavor was not all there. Had to ask for a side of duck and soy sauce to try to fix what was missing, same for my friend and her sesame chicken. Cute place, and seems to be really popular but not my cup of tea. Came here for lunch on Friday afternoon with my BF and found that it was quite busy. We had to wait a few minutes for a table so I stared at the pretty ceiling while the BF perused the menu. This is what we ordered: Szechuan bang bang shrimp (app): Fried shrimp covered in a supposedly spicy sauce. I was kind of disappointed with this, as the shrimp were not crispy at all but very soggy. The sauce was nothing special. Scallion bubble pancake (snack): Not at all what we expected. We got 2 HUGE balloons of dough with a curry dipping sauce. Not spicy at all, a little greasy, but I enjoyed it. Also I don't know where the scallion part comes in because I didn't taste any of it.. Sweet & spicy chicken with cucumber (lunch special): Fried chicken in a ridiculously sticky sauce, so sticky that it would make your braces come off of your teeth. The cucumbers were an added bonus, so refreshing but still had a bit of spice. My favorite dish that we ordered. Shrimp with asparagus (lunch special): The asparagus was cooked nicely, but the shrimp itself was way too salty. Just okay. The lunch specials came with a soup, a tiny eggroll and rice. The hot and sour soup was the spiciest thing that we had the whole meal. The rice was disgusting. I don't know if they used some kind of healthy rice or what, but it was hard and had an off-putting flavor. Service and decor were wonderful, but the food was just decent. I was apprehensive about eating here because I'd heard so much about how spicy everything was. Maybe if we had stuck to more traditional Szechuan fare we would have been happier and more spiced up. The prices are good for the portion size. Also this doesn't really have anything to do with my review but they serve their food on plain plastic plates and bowls.. in my opinion it kind of cheapens the place up and makes it seem more like a cafeteria :/ read more

Updated Review: I'm bumping my rating up to 4 stars. I visited Peter Chang's a few months ago for lunch and finally got a chance to have dinner her with some friends this past weekend and it was everything I expected. Finding good Chinese food has been my biggest frustration over the last few years. This place is at the top of my list for one of the best I have eaten in many years. The service was decent but I can deal with that with the quality of food I ate. And the fact the food already comes out spicy without me having to ask is a plus. 1. Dry-Fried Eggplant - Interesting and tasty dish! 2. Minced Chicken Lettuce Wrap - Minced chicken had the perfect flavor. 3. Cumin Lamb - Lamb is one of my favorite meats and although everyone thought it was too spicy it was PERFECT for me. 4. Chicken Cilantro Hot Pot - This usually comes with beef but we switched it up and it still tasted very good! 5. Hunan Chicken - Ordered it again and still tasted just as great as last time. 6. Schezwan Chicken In Spicy Sauce - Ordered it again and still tasted just as great as last time. 7. Spicy Fried Rice - Typical fried rice but perfect complement to all the dishes we ordered. All the food was perfect cooked and the portions were huge. I can not stop recommending this place to anyone who lives in the area. I do not have the luxury of eating here consistently which is a shame. If the food is the same the next time I visit I will bump my rating up to 5 stars. Kudos to Peter Chang's! Now come open one in Raleigh, NC... read more

Seriously folks, this food pops!! Having been to Mama Changs in Fairfax, we figured this had to be good. While the decor may not seem "white tablecloth" we go to places for the FOOD, and this did not disappoint. We had the pork belly and eggplant appetizers, then shared the seafood hot pot. WOW!!! Flavors all over. Young waiter was very nice and attentive, surprised we asked for chopsticks and scraped our plates, LOL. Wish they were near me!! read more

I have heard a lot about Peter Chang's Restaurant and how you must get their early if you want to sit and eat. So, I got there at 5:30p and the place was packed with people waiting in line. Amazing! However, I was able to sit down right away when I gave my name as they had a table for ONE. I saw many items on the menu as they do have photos with each dish. I have never heard of some of these item like Three Pepper Hot Iron Skillet and many others. This is not the usual Chinese Restaurant in which I am use to going into. The Young server was very busy and when she took my order, I decided on the Chicken Three Pepper Iron Skillet with White Rice. In addition, I order additional Hot Peppers for additional kick for taste and heat. When the dish came out it was sizzling on a Iron Skillet piping HOT! I was impressed as it reminded me of Fajitas at a Mexican Restaurant. It has an amazing taste, however because they are so busy, it was hard finding your server for anything you may need. I had to call the upfront manager over for the Soy Sauce and water.... Otherwise I would have given it a 5 Star Rating. They need to hire additional servers as they are extremely busy with too many tables for one server... Because of this, you are somewhat forgotten and you may have to defend for yourself in wanting to get something which they had forgotten to bring. The tables turn over quickly I noticed, so do not let this discourage you in wanting to go. It is worth the wait and I saw many other items on the menu in which I want to try. I can understand the Hype on Peter Chang's as it is not like the "Usual" Chinese Restaurant where the food is bland and unappetizing. It is excellent in taste and the flavors in the food are Outstanding.... I am looking forward in going back and I posted a photo of my Chicken Three Pepper Iron Skillet... See you there! :-) read more

This establishment was recommended by a chef and former employee of the Food Network, so how could we not visit? It's location in the midst of a strip mall might give one pause, but upon entering, you'll find a visual oasis. The colors, art, etc were very inviting and relaxing. This along with finding a place in Richmond that was more than half full at 1:30 on a Saturday gave us great hope that we were in for something special. This euphoria lasted less than 10 minutes! First, our server, while pleasant, was less than attentive from the point of our seating to the minute we departed. We largely ordered what we would try anywhere, starting with spring rolls and sweet & pungant ribs, followed by chicken fried rice for my wife and guangdong gulu duck for myself. The springrolls were three small rolls that were comprised of doughy, under-cooked roll with nearly no filling, supported by a rather flavorless duck sauce. The ribs, on the other hand, were well cooked and reasonably tasty. Unfortunately, that was to be the highlight of the afternoon! The fried rice, although plentiful, was largely without flavor. The duck, which was presented elegantly, was not fried well and thus had chunks of inedible fat and was doused in what tasted nearly equal to store bought orange sauce. Needless to say it was hugely disappointing. The lone high point of the dish was about eight beans that were well prepared and delicious. At just over 44 dollars with one soda and lemonade, we walked out of Peter Chang's noting other less than household name Chinese restaurants in the area that were much more satisfying in terms of food than what we had here. read more

The restaurant was a mad house, well on Saturday night. We were passing by to head home and decided to check it out. Any standing space was filled up with people waiting. We took a number and were told it would be a 45-min wait or so. Then there were people who made reservations who just walked in. That's a first. Then there were the people who didn't understand why later numbers with smaller parties were getting seated because they had 7 or 10 people. We got a booth table which was nice. The cleaning crew worked at top speed unlike anything we had ever seen but at the same time they were throwing dishes into containers like it was a Greek festival loud and violent. As we were getting seated, we saw food wiped down from the table to the bench. And bench to hopefully to the dish cloth or floor. For appetizers we ordered the five-spiced beef tendons - 90% meat and 10% tendon? It had good flavors though. The marinated shredded bean curd skins with chili oil that was really fragrant and delectable. The poof-up bread was of course such a fun thing to enjoy. The Grandma's sweet and sour pork was made with thinly sliced pork fried to a perfect crisp and I loved the use of the Zhejiang vinegar that made the dish however it was 80% sweet and 20% sour, I just preferred a more balanced sweet and sour. Still it was a great dish! The other dish that I was intrigued by was the flounder tofu fish balls. I didnt know what quite to expect. It was a house made mixture of fish and tofu and fried then braised with vegetables in a brown sauce, it was not spicy (totally mistaken) but very tasty dish. Loved the enoki mushrooms and other vegetables in it as well. read more

This place is hard to find if you're not familiar with the area. Just look for the Wal-Mart. It is in that shopping center. The place was packed and I got their just before the dinner rush on a Wednesday, about 6:30. When walking in I was reminded of chinese restaurants in Hong Kong. Very open air with tightly spaced tables, many large round table perfect for groups ready to share meal. I was on business and traveling alone so I was given a quaint little table for one up front. The food is excellent. I would have ordered a little differently next time but I enjoyed all that I had. I started with an appetizer of Pork Dan Dan Noodles. They were good and incredibly spicy with Szechuan peppercorns. They had a little beefy flavor to them that I couldn't put my finger on. I enjoy P.F. Chang's/Pei Wei Dan Dan more but these are probably more authentic. I ordered a side of Cucumber in Garlic sauce that was perfectly soothing to calm the heat from spice. My main meal was the Hot and Numbing hot pot. Very good! The shrimp in the hot pot was phenomenal so I would probably order a shrimp dish next time. The homemade wonton soup was the best I have had anywhere. Hand rolled wontons. Peter could be seen in the back cooking whenever the door to the kitchen opened which was a neat touch and my sever, Sarah with an H was just the best I could have hoped for! She was attentive, very knowledgeable about the menu, and happy to be at work. I will go back the next time I am in Richmond read more

I've been to Peter Chang's four times. Tried many dishes and I give the restaurant a solid four. Luckily we've never had to wait more than 5-10 minutes, with parties of 3 to 8. I don't love every dish here, but I really enjoy the different style of Chinese food. The "traditional" chinese food is also good, yet a bit different than what you typically get. For the most part dishes are very spicy, which most of my friends love. I really appreciate what the restaurant is trying to do. Favorite dishes: the bubble scallion pancake with curry sauce (my friends tell me it is very similar to the Indian puri), the sweet ribs appetizer, the spicy cumin lamb, kung pao chicken, fried dumplings (hard to go wrong here). Good dishes: clay pot duck, mapo tofu, general tso's chicken (no batter), golden mountain chicken, beef with three spices (very Thai tasting). They also now have weekly specials. For "comfort" or traditional Chinese food I think there are better choices in Richmond (Mama Wok and King of Szechuan), but for something different and spicy there is so much to choose from at Peter Chang's and that is why we keep coming back. read more

Man oh man! This is easily one of my top 5 places to eat in RVA! I don't think i've ever been really disappointed with any of their dishes here. Came here last Friday night and had to wait for about 30 mins (expected, especially right at dinner time, around 6.45 PM). There were plenty of people coming in and getting a number and waiting but not too many people coming out though.. Service is pretty good but on this particular visit it was faster than normal and all the food came out within like 10 minutes Me and my friend knew exactly what we wanted considering we got to take a look at the menu before we got seated. On my most recent visit I was able to taste the Tofu Skins, Crispy pork belly, and the Beef Clay hot pot. Tofu skins were actually surprisingly pretty good! It's literally wraps of tofu skin covered in a sweet soy sauce of some sort; this is a COLD appetizer. The crispy pork belly is always a good choice and packs a good punch of heat in every bite. I think the portions for the pork belly definitely decreased though... The beef clay pot also hit the spot for starving stomach and tastebuds. My friend indicated that the beef was a little chewy but actually, I prefer it that way! Not sure if it's how most traditional Chinese places do it, but I've always had the beef slices just a tad bit chewy and the beef clay pot here didn't disappoint at all! The clay pot was definitely an entree that can be shared between two people. On my next visit, I need to try some of their other crazy hot pot dish or maybe one of their Duck entrees too. read more

I wanted to try Peter Changs a few times before I gave my review. After visiting for the 3rd time, I feel I can confidently give it 4 stars. The atmosphere is casual and they have many large tables to accommodate groups who like to eat family style. The lazy Susan is the perfect addition to these large tables. This time it was just two of us, but the place was pretty packed for a Tuesday night, so we opted to sit at a large table that was available so we didn't have to wait. I didn't mind and did appreciate them for letting us do so as most restaurants would not for fear of losing out on money from a bigger group. This most recent time I had a super secret dish!! Just kidding, it was Mongolian Beef, but for whatever reason it isn't listed on the menu. The only reason I knew to order it was because the last time I went I was with a friend who ordered it. It is a sweet beef dish with a hint of tang from the green and white onions. I do think the onions were 2/3 of the plate but the actual taste and flavor did not overpower the meal and so I just skipped a few (or ten) with every bite. So delicious and it actually was a huge portion that kept me full for 2 leftover meals after. Very good! read more

I can't feel my tongue, and that's OK. Even walking in the building is delicious, the smells alone heralding an excellent dining experience. The staff is delightful and helpful when you struggle to make choices -with sensible words of caution about the hotter dishes- and you often get more than what you paid for, it seems. This last visit I got wee vegetarian spring rolls that I'd been staring at but decided against ordering finally... only to have them tucked in next to my dry fried eggplant gratis instead. I've eaten til I'm full and still have probably twice as much food in takeout boxes as I've consumed, somehow, to enjoy over the next day or two, and I'm looking forward to it. read more

This is the best Chinese food restaurant in Richmond. In fact, stands up to most of the best restaurants south of DC. I highly recommend Peter Chang's. read more

I had been looking forward to eating at Peter Chang's for several months now after seeing several of my friend's posting pictures from there. I current live in Cary, NC and was visiting family in RVA yesterday so we decided to try it out. I was quite disappointed. We ordered several dishes: the Bamboo Fish, Dry fries green beans, combination Lomein, and three peppers beef. The best items were the Bamboo Fish and Dry fried green beans. However, they were not to the level of the same dishes available at Taipei 101 in Cary, NC. The other dishes were rather bland. For $68 I expected the quality of the food to be much better than other locations. The service was rather terrible. It took our server more than 5 minutes to even acknowledge our table. The table didn't have enough silverware for the number of people at our table (3 adults and 1 child). I kept having to asking other servers for assistance since our sever was not really checking up on us. Overall was disappointed as I was really expecting a lot more after reading so many reviews. May go back just to get the Bamboo fish when I'm in the area and have a strong craving for it. Otherwise, most likely will not be dining in. read more

We had dinner at Peter Changs for my 40th with my family. We ordered family style and loved the experience. Everyone had their own personal favorites. Mine were the Shredded Duck with onions & scallions, crispy pork belly and fried eggplant. I can highly recommend these dishes. The table loved the novelty of the scallion pancake. Its pancake that was filled with air & puffed up.. Really creative. The service was knowledgeable about the dishes and were eager to keep our group of 7 happy. I didn't care for the lamb skewers as they were kinda soggy when I expected grilled. I especially loved the vegetables on each appetizer dish mixed with hot peppers.. Yum.... read more

We had a group of 3 on a Tuesday night. I called to make a reservation but they only take reservations for parties larger than ours. But I figured it was a Tuesday so we'd be ok. There was definitely a 20 min wait when we arrived. We found a couple of seats at the bar and enjoyed some cocktails while we waited. I tried the Wuhan Mule and my friend got the Thai Gin Sour. The peppercorn infused vodka and tamarind in the mule threw me for a loop. I didn't hate it, but it wasn't my favorite. The Thai Gin Sour came with egg whites as an ingredient so I was apprehensive, but I thought her drink was really good. Not super sweet, but definitely more of a "girlie" cocktail. Wait times were accurate and the staff was friendly. Let me just say that we were fatties and ordered a ton of food. We started with the duck fennel roll. It was a like a spring roll and the duck and fennel flavors were both pretty mild. Then we got the hot and numbing beef app. Omg! Moderately spicy and packed with delicious flavor. It was so good. We got the shrimp fried rice to share which was good. Then we tried the Szechuan chicken, the Golden Mountain chicken and the duck and sweet pea dinner. I know. Smh. It was a crazy amount of food. My least favorite of the 3 entrees was the Szechuan chicken but it was pretty good and came with lots of veggies. I like spicy and the duck and snow pea dish hit the spot. It was also moderately spicy and served on a hot plate. The Golden mountain chicken tasted like a different take on orange chicken. While I enjoyed the flavors, I wished it was a little spicer. So who wins the gourmet Chinese battle, Fat Dragon or Peter Chang? It's a tough call. I vote Fat Dragon, but both friends I went with last night voted Peter Chang. Either way, they are both worth checking out. Maybe a little friendly competition between these two excellent Chinese places could pay off for Richmonders! read more

I hadn't been here in a few years, and was excited to take my kids for dinner. The food was good, but the service was horrible. 2 meals were brought out together and the 3rd came 15 minutes later. We couldn't eat together. I think they had 1 waiter covering the whole restaurant. We had to flag him down to get water refills. It was a bummer because my kids didn't want to eat before me, but they had to or their food would have gotten cold. It just killed the vibe. read more

SO SO GOOD!!! I love spicy food, and whenever I go to restaurants, I feel like the food isn't spicy enough (even when I ask for extra spice). I asked for extra spice on the chicken on a hot plate, and they delivered! A lot of their dishes are also put on really cute plates. read more

I've been here a few times and I think the novelty is starting to wear off. It's always packed, servers are always polite and accommodating. Food always comes out hot, but not always together. Some dishes came out almost 10 minutes before the last people got their food (party of 9). I got the dry fried duck which was decent, but I wouldn't order it again, mainly because other things looked better. I'll update this again as I try more things, it's not bad, not great, but certainly worth trying. I would give it 3.5 stars if I could. read more

Not your regular Asian cuisine. Very unique and delicious items on the menu, a Richmond staple.

We finally made it to Hofheimer location of Peter Chang's for an early dinner. There was no line, we walked in and sat. I am sure there are many reviews so I will keep it short. It was really really good. I had high expectations, which may have contributed, but it wasn't amazing. Really really good, but word "delighted" wouldn't make the sentence. Given the renown of the chief, I was expecting more exotic offerings, with more rare ingredients. It was pedestrian... With that said, the cook on the food, the sauces, etc... all top notch. The flavors were wonderful, albeit a little "one note". It maybe that we didn't order well. No one will ever have a bad meal here, but for restaurant I was sure I would give 5 stars without question, I give 4 instead. I will update on my next journey there. read more
