Get it if you have not tried one before!! Overall meal was just okay. Service was pretty slow. Two dishes came out 15 min before the third. Since we were eating as a family it was okay, but not ideal. Mountain chicken is good, sweet and crispy and kid friendly, but not exciting. Beef lo mein was fine. Szechuan beef with crispy potato has beautiful presentation. It comes to table with heater lit. I could tell that although we requested 1 chilli level spice vs 2, it was going to be HOT and it was. Part 2, updated! ** Please check out my prior review as everything in that review stands true still, just wanted to make a few updates.** -- First and most exciting for me is that their online menu now clearly designates what items can be made Gluten Free. The menu is extensive! I have Celiac and wasn't bothered by anything I ate, but if you're super sensitive I'm sure the restaurant would be more than willing to work with you as the staff seems nice and knowledgeable. -- Second, during these wild pandemic times, I've been playing the safe and cautious route and have stuck to ordering only takeout, and I have to say, Peter Chang's handles it well. The pick up was fast and more importantly the food stayed warm and the fried items didn't get soft or soggy. In terms of food, I've tried a handful of items since my initial review. --Notable items: - Shan City Chicken: This is basically food of the gods in human form. What you get is a plate of cubed and fried chicken, leeks, and dried chili peppers, cooked in a numbing and spicy sauce. If you've never had Sichuan food of the numbing variety, I whole heartedly recommend this. You eat around the chili peppers, but everything else is unbelievably tasty. For my last meal (which hopefully isn't for a while still!), this is what I want. Pretty sure that it's coated in some sort of cornstarch and pan fried as the gluten free version is identical, which is even better news for me. - Three Pepper Chicken: If you like spicy things and you like stir fries, can't recommend this one enough. It's spicy as there are multiple types of peppers in this bad boy. (Jalapenos, Bell Peppers, and I'm guessing the last refers to Chili Peppers maybe?) This one isn't as numbing as the Shan City, it's more of an in your face hot, but not too spicy to not be flavorful. Yum, my mouth is watering just writing this. - Bamboo Flounder: See Shan City Chicken above, but think bigger pieces of fish. It's real tasty. - Ghost Pepper Beef: Okay, so it's hot. Like really hot. Only get this if you like spicy food. But it's tasty. But it's hot. I've tried probably 5 other things on the menu or so and haven't disliked any of them, but the above things are my favorite. Overall closing notes of this Part 2 update: I really love Sichuan Food, and I love places I feel I can safely eat at with my dietary restrictions. Double check mark for Peter Chang's, and I wasn't joking when I said I want Shan City Chicken on my deathbed. Really excellent Chinese restaurant for Szechuan food! Spicy and savory, all the dishes are well executed and the food is perfect for those cold weather nights when you need something to warm you up. The spicy peppercorn fish leaves your mouth tingling but it goes so well with a bowl of white rice. The Beef Dry Pot has really tender strips of beef and those delicious crispy potatoes that soak up all the flavors and the chili oil. While the dishes are certainly a bit pricey and portion size can be a little small, this is more than made up by bold food with big flavors. Keep up the good work :) read more

My all-time FAVORITE dish in the Greater Richmond Area: Beef with Onion and Chili Pepper (#L9 on lunch menu and also served on dinner menu too). If you are okay with spice and onions, I highly recommend. The spices are truly integrated into the meat which is also very tender. Lunch is a really great deal as the dish comes with your choice of soup (hot & sour or egg drop) and rice (white or fried). I have been coming to Peter Chang for a while now, and I do have to say the Short Pump location is 10000x better than the Scott's Addition location. The dishes taste more authentic and have better quality. Service is quick and efficient. I have been coming to Peter Chang in Short Pump for a while now, and I am always pleased with my food and experience. I've been to 2 other Peter Chang locations, and this one is good too! The good: 1) House Special Fish Fillet was excellent and my favorite dish of my meal! Very savory with delicious sauce, crispy fried fish and mixed steamed vegetables. Beautiful presentation with the large platter over a propane fire, but deceivingly smaller portion. It is a shallow, long dish so it looks much more than is there. For 2 people, the portion was good, but for more than 2 definitely need more main dishes. 2) Dry-Fried Eggplant appetizer was excellent and basically same taste and style of preparation as at other Peter Chang restaurants. Only difference was the dish it was served in was different from the bamboo baskets I've seen at other locations. 3) the interior of the restaurant is much nicer than the photos that I saw in other Yelp reviews. On the fence about the red/orange color, but the chairs and tables were very nice and the bar area was pretty. Not as nice as the interior of Mama Chang in Fairfax, VA, but still much nicer than the older photos. The not so good: 1) Mushroom Crispy Noodles with Chicken was a strong miss for me. Way too much black pepper and salt for my taste and a weird presentation on the small narrow hot plate which meant much of the crispy noodle was lost to become soggy underneath all of the wet chicken, mushrooms and sauce. 2) they charge for more than 1 small bowl of rice that comes with main dishes. Very odd practice as all of the other Peter Chang locations that I've been to follow typical Chinese restaurant culture of giving as much white rice to customers as they want. Came here looking to get a dish that is served at the Scott's addition location. We were seated quickly and served just as fast. Ordered the crispy pork belly thinking that's what was at the other location but that wasn't quite it. Bf liked it but I wasn't a fan. Next was a sweet and sour pork dish. This one had a bit more sauce on it. But still wasn't the dish we were looking for. We learned that the two locations have different menus. Both of us think the crispy pork belly is better. I had their bang bang shrimp which really needs another name. There's no kick to it at all and it does not taste anything like any other bang bang shrimp. The taste wasn't bad it just wasn't what I wanted. Lastly I had chicken lo mein which was fine. Nothing special nothing gross. The prices were a smidge high and the inside pretty cold. I came here with five others this past Saturday for lunch and we all had a great experience. My RVA local friends rave about the Sichuan style food here as it is one of their favorites in the area. This was only my second time here, but I was looking forward to this meal since I remember my first time being good. The server was attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. We ordered a lot of food and I would honestly recommend all of the dishes we chose. Here are some of the notable ones: * Dry-fried Green Bean: We got two of these because who doesn't like tasty vegetables? The beans weren't super crispy but it had remarkable flavor. Each plate was topped with a generous amount of onions and fried garlic which enhanced the green beans well. Would highly recommend this dish! * Crispy Pork Belly: This is a delicious appetizer that's great to be shared. The crispy breading is crunchy with a bit of spicy heat. The pork belly is thin, yet juicy and packed with umami. The plating was also unique and elegant. * Pork Ribs with Mushroom Soup: This was the light and non-spicy gem out of all the dishes we got. The broth is extremely comforting and packed with flavor; the ginger and meat flavor really stood out to me. This soup came in a sizable pot (more than enough for 6 people) and it was topped with lots of mushrooms, pork ribs, garlic, and scallions. I had something to munch on for every sip of soup. I was able to get three servings of this! This dish was definitely my favorite out of the many we ordered. We also got the bamboo flounder fish (appetizer) and spicy beef dish (with lots of sauce to drench your rice with, yum) that I forgot the name of, but just know that it was very good and we were very happy after we finished eating. I ordered the kung pao chicken and spring rolls. I started with the spring rolls and i was not impressed, came with three rolls, i had 1 and moved on to King Pao chicken. As a matter of fact Ive had better frozen spring rolls from Harris Teeter. I started the Kung Pao chicken and after 3 bites, I tossed in the trash. The only explanation I can give what it tastes like is between the outer layer of crab Rangoon & a fortune cookie. Lol. Peter Chang Ratings: 4/5 Food: 3.5/5 - First time at this Peter Chang location in Richmond and the food turn out to be better than I thought. Also, it's been forever since I been to a Peter Chang. We ordered the home style flounder fish and the stir fry hotpot with beef and chicken. We paid extra for protein, but I thought it wasn't that much, so that's a bummer. Food was decent and super flavorful. It was very salty though, so had some rice to balance out the flavors. I would say it is a decent meal, but did not blew my mind at all. With that being said, I had way better Szechuan food, and this place was just very mediocre for me. Ambiance: 4/5 - The atmosphere and vibe was good and interior was pretty, clean, and good. Has an Asian bistro type of feel. Price: 3.75/5 - Two entrees with extra protein came up to be around $60, which is okay. I just wish the portion was bigger. My sister and I finished both entrees and was okay full. I mean we do eat a lot too. Service: 4.75/5 - One thing I have to say is the service was on point. I think our server was named Candace, and she's was legit. Flagship this cannot be the Flagship for Peter Chang restaurant. Let me start by saying we have been to several of the Peter Changs throughout the state of VA. We know the menu fairly well so it's always nice to try the different locations. My family and I thought we would end our day of shopping in Short Pump w/delicious Peter Changs but we were ultimately disappointed. When we arrived the restaurant was pretty empty for a Saturday afternoon. We were seated immediately and the table was adequate. Tiffany our waitress was friendly but I did feel pressured to order quickly... My daughter ordered her favorite Gerneral Tso(not pictured) she thought her portion was much smaller than the location. My husband ordered the orange chicken he was not impressed and stated the spice level was mild at best. I ordered the dry fried eggplant for an appetizer it was pretty good. For my entree I ordered the tofu skin and cabbage. I literally had to dig under the watery cabbage to get to the 6 strings of tofu skin. The whole entree was absolutely flavor less I couldn't finish it. Before we left I ordered the pork belly after seeing a mountain of this given to the table next to us. I thought maybe the crispy fried pork could salvage the meal but to no avail. It was neither crispy nor plentiful. None of us enjoyed our meal so it's safe to say this will be our first and last time eating at this location. read more

Been loving going to this restaurant for the longest time. It's always a treat for the family. Favorite dish is the bamboo fish flounder or crispy pork belly, some other dishes are hit or miss or just too expensive but their lunch special deals are great if you're trying to be stingy with money. Watch out for some dishes with the spice level, if you adjust the spice level to no spice, you'll have to be careful with the saltiness of the dishes by removing the spice. The fried cauliflower is seasoned with spices and fried golden. Although it's an appetizer, I added fried rice and it was an entree for me. Our server was wonderful about recommendations as it was our first time. The food was delicious. We ordered bubble pancake, fried dumplings, roasted duck, stone pot seafood curry. We just moved to Lake Anna and are getting to know our new southern Virginia opportunities. This place is Sichuan heaven - strongly suggest getting in there with a group of people so you can go wild ordering lots of the menu's goodies. The menu has soooo many things that aren't on any other Chinese joynt's menu in RVA - my faves are fish with sour cabbage soup, dry braised shrimp and beef, and when I'm up for it palate-wise, the hot & numbing beef brisket hot pot (WHOA WOW HOT STUFF). My friend introduced me to Peter Chang after I mentioned wanting to find a new Chinese place in the area that's difference than your average restaurant, and Peter Changs did not disappoint! We came for lunch and got the specials. Lovely wonton soup and an entree. My friend also ordered the scallion bubble bread, which was a totally new and delicious experience for me. For my entree, I ordered the General Tsos chicken, which is always my go to. It was good! Chicken was coated nicely and fried well. Take out order was pricy and seemingly upscale but I think its worth the price. I'm used to eating greasy Chinese take out but this was such a pleasant experience. The spice level was pretty up there. I ordered level 2 out of 3 so if you don't like heat then stick with level 1 because 2 was SPIIIICCCYYYY and I usually get a 4 out of 5 at Indian restaurant.
