The spice level was pretty up there. I ordered level 2 out of 3 so if you don't like heat then stick with level 1 because 2 was SPIIIICCCYYYY and I usually get a 4 out of 5 at Indian restaurant. By far the most consistently high quality and tasty Chinese restaurant I have ever visited. It isn't your standard fare, no "beef and broccoli" or "general Tso's chicken". Instead you get things like dry fried eggplant (to die for), crispy pork belly (OMG so good) and bamboo fish filet (also phenomenal). We had all of these and were so taken by them that I completely forgot to take pictures! For entrees, we had Mongolian beef (secret menu item, but available if you ask). We asked them to make it a little spicy, so it had the perfect amount of kick. The beef literally melted in our mouths. My favorite dish of the night. We also had house special fish (gigantic portion of tender flaky fish prices in a perfectly balanced sweet/spicy sauce with vegetables). It would have fed all 4 of us! The food here was really good! It's like Americanized Chinese food, but not super Americanized like Panda Express and not as authentic as your local hole in the wall place. I think this place is a great balance of both and certain dishes taste more authentic while other dishes can be enjoyed by the less adventurous souls. Things ordered: - Scallion Bubble Pancake (3/5) : I've never had bubble pancakes before so it was quite amusing seeing these 4 puffy balloon looking things, but the flavors were meh and the dipping sauce it came with wasn't super delicious. I actually started dipping my pancake in the hot and numbing soup broth and enjoyed it better that way. - Crispy Pork Belly (4/5) : This dish is pretty much fried bacon and you can't really go wrong with fried bacon! Always a great place for non-Americanized Chinese food. Started with the Crispy Pork Belly appetizer, it was very good with a tender and not too chewy inside and a delicate breaded outside. The "was it spicy?" answers were divided, I would classify it as not spicy but flavorful. My wife ordered the Golden Mountain Chicken and it was tasty. Crispy breaded chicken pieces covered with the sweet and salty golden mountain sauce. I got the Szechuan double cooked chicken and it was also very good. They chicken was tender and the leeks were crunchy. It was well seasoned by default (I did not request mild or spicy.) My son and his sons split Orange chicken prepared gluten-free and were pleased with the results. (I think many items on the menu can be prepared gluten-free which is a nice option.) I've been coming to Peter Chang for years and I've rarely been disappointed by their service or their food. I ate with my parents, who are very traditional and have stronger expectations than me for Chinese food, but they also appreciated it. Our first item was the Pork Ribs and Mushroom soup, which I absolutely love! The portions are great and the broth is extremely flavorful. One of my favorite soups of all time. Something a little strange is that our waiter brought out rice at the same time -- however, rice is usually brought out with the main dishes. My parents were worried the rice would get cold by the time the rest of the food came out, so we sent it back temporarily. NOTE: this is an important standard at most authentic Chinese restaurants Next, we got our Bubble Pancakes, which is a pretty good appetizer but very filling. We asked for 2 sauce cups and the waiter accommodated! Afterwards, our seafood dish and the pork were great. Ordered Chicken and Vegetables (which I have had many times) the Chicken was flat fatty unrecognizable - I thought maybe it was tofu. The vegetables were good. Manager was not helpful offered for it to be remade but I was ready to leave. Offered no refund or discount. No sincere concern said he would talk with kitchen never returned to my table. His handling of the situation when it was clear from looking at the pile of flat fatty chicken I had removed from the dish was so frustrating I'm done with this location. Sadly it's independently run and owned. The restaurant is a good size, neat, and organized. Everything was delicious. Some dishes that really stood out were the Scallion Bubble Pancake, Dry Fried Eggplant, and Hot and Numbing Combination in Hot Pot. The Scallion Pancake comes with curry dipping sauce on the side. Absolutely wonderful. Thin and crispy. The Dry Fried Eggplant is an amazing dish. B really dislikes eggplant and he loved this dish. Must try! The Hot and Numbing Combination in Hot Pot is exactly what it sounds like, hot and numbing. It was spicy to me and though I couldn't feel my lips anymore, I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I'd give this place a high 3. I was very impressed with the appetizers and presentation of my entree but it felt fell short in flavor and should have been served with a starch (duck pot). The menu is filled with fun "numbing" dishes, but be careful because it's easy to overload and get miserable! I really wish that I didn't have to drive down here from DC for this place, but at least I had the excuse of seeing family. But in all honesty, that could have waited, we just wanted to try Peter Chang's food from a restaurant he is currently working at, rather than one he used to work at, and we are glad we made the trip! With that said, here was what we found: 1) Dry Numbing Beef: a great starter of tasty chunks of beef dry stir fried with dried red chilies, and served under a pile of fresh parsley. The beef isn't what you would call spicy (no tears or burning tongue), but there is some preparation of pepper in it that actually numbs your mouth. It's a slightly odd feeling, but it's nice because it means that the spice doesn't overwhelm the flavors in the beef. The beef itself is not just dry-stir-fried, it is also intentionally dried out (after?) it is marinated is some sort of soy-sauce marinade. If you're expecting tender chunks of beef, you won't get them, but if you like those thin-sliced teriyaki beef skewers that get a little crispy-chewy on the grill, you'll be pleased. 2) Chili and Onion Chicken (#37): another dry stir fry, no globs of thick sauce on this one, just a giant bowl/hot pot of sizzling chicken, onions, and spicy green chili pepper slices. This was the hottest dish that we tried, and while it was certainly quite spicy, it wasn't unbearable, and it wasn't too spicy for the chili-garlic flavors to come through. You will probably want a side of rice to go with this one. 3) Crispy Shredded Duck: If you want something tasty, but don't like spice, this is a really nice option. The duck is thinly sliced and boneless, and while it has been cooked with some nice spices, it is again more or less sauceless (with some duck sauce is provided on the side). There's really no need to get rice with this one, you just take a piece of roti, some duck, cucumber, and scallions, drop on a little duck sauce and wrap it up into a handroll. I love this type of dish, and this was done quite well. Some other reviewers have knocked the service, but you've got to cut any new place some slack for the first few months, and we certainly found it to be fine. My only complaint overall is the same complaint I have for any ethnic place that serves severely spicy food: milk may not be a common drink in --insert spicy cuisine type here--, but if I'm going to try something that is going to burn the cr@p out of my mouth, I would personally really appreciate it if you would have milk on the drink menu to help me not cry like a child with a skinned knee, because that's just embarrassing for me to do in public. Final useful info: reservation for four or more only, no lunch specials on the weekends, no take out. If you just want General Tso's Chicken or Teriyaki Chicken With Broccoli, this may not impress you, but if you want something much more authentic (and spicy), this is a great choice. We'll be back even if it is two hours away, and if the other food on the menu is as good as what we tried this time, I'll probably bump it up to five stars! read more

This review of Peter Chang China Café is a tough one for me. I wanted this place to excel so bad it hurts to write this. Peter Chang runs a classy looking place. We were seated promptly and put in our drink orders. A quick look over the menu revealed Minced Chicken Lettuce Wraps! Score! We ordered those and waited with anticipation. They were excellent. Not sure if they were good enough to dethrone the king of lettuce wraps (that place in Stony Point Fashion Park with an eerily similar name *wink*), but they were definitely better than Ginger Red's in Mechanicsville. The next appetizer was the steamed pork dumplings and this is where we nose-dived into the sad territory. The presentation was first rate. The dumpling was terrible, just abysmal. No flavor, water running everywhere, weird texture, etc. This dish wasn't for me. Sigh. Last, and sadly least, was the pork ribs & mushroom soup in ceramic pot. I'm not sure what this was supposed to taste like. But if they were going for completely bland with a hint of earth flavor they nailed it. No depth of flavor, no seasoning. I'm not even sure it was a broth of any kind. I don't expect an eight hour masterpiece like Pho but show me a little effort. This seemed like water with boiled meat in it; a total fail. I'm giving you 3 stars by a hair because of the lettuce wraps and the great service. Not to mention you have a 4 star rating with over 300 reviews. Hard to place takeout order when there are no descriptions with their dishes. The restaurant's website is not any better. Their menu options don't allow you to view dinner menu only. You can select lunch only or "all types" which, presumably shows both lunch and dinner dishes. However, everything listed under all types says "dinner size lunch" whatever that means. When we walked into the room we were hit with great smells and I saw some nice plates of food on the tables we walked past. Michael was our waiter and he was excellent. Really nice guy who suggested some great dishes too. For apps, we had pork belly and scallion pancakes, and both tasted delicious. The pork belly was crispy and seasoned well. I did not care for the curry sauce served with the pancakes, but thoroughly enjoyed them plain. For mains I had Szechuan beef and BF got the golden chicken dish (cannot remember the exact name). We both liked both entrees a-lot and would highly recommend them. Golden chicken was sweet and crispy, also in tiny strips, nice touch. They also serve asian beer and sake . The best Chinese food I've had in a very long while. This is just one of a few locations but so far my favorite. I like my food spicy and this place does not disappoint. For an appetizer I had the Crazy Beef with Ghost Chili and my coworker had the Dry-Fried Eggplant. Then I had the Beef with Onion and Chili. There was a good level of heat and flavor. My coworker ordered the Golden Mountain Chicken. I like the fact that they do slather it with sauce like most places do with their food. The service was also on point. I have been a customer of the Short Pump location since Peter Chang opened this location several years ago. Over the years I have really enjoyed the uniqueness and variety of their food. The food has consistently been at least a 3.5/5 and most often above a 4/5. I have enjoyed their food so much that even though I no longer live or work in the area, I drive across town past 10 other Chinese food restaurants and pay about 40% higher than food at the other restaurants. Today I ordered for takeout a L8. Szechuan hot & numbing with egg drop soup as it is my typical go to dish. It was spicy like I like it but a bit more salty than usual. One thing I was really disappointed about was the customer service. When I opened my take out bag I noticed there were no crispy noodles for the egg drop soup. I requested them from an employee and he told me "oh it doesn't come with crispy noodle, it cost money." I was so confused that I asked him again. He assured me that they do not come with the meal but didn't offer the price or to get the get the crispy noodles for me. I almost asked if I needed to pay for the chopsticks and napkins too. I've never been asked to pay before, even when I asked for 2 packs of crispy noodles. They always place the noodles on the table when dining in and with no charge. Who knows, maybe my expectations are too high. Perhaps next time I go to McDonalds they will charge me for ketchup?! Or when I go to Mexico restaurant they'll give me salsa but the chips will cost extra? I'll likely still come to this location since I enjoy the food. It was just odd and off putting since I've been going out of my way to patronize their business. Small things make a big difference. Super delish! Came here tonight to catch up with my so called awesome "Mortgage Momma", and this was actually her first time! First off, I'm not sure if it's just cause it's in the West end, but they will only take reservations for 4+ parties. My momma and I decided to have an early dinner and go right after work. We started the night off with pork pan friend dumpling and an order of vegetarian egg rolls. The egg rolls was crispy on the outside and super soft in the inside. My favorite was the dumplings, it was cooked just right and the sauce that it came out with was REALLY good. Highly suggest the dumplings. As for the main plates to share, we decided on the Hot & Numbing Combination in Hot Pot and the Fried Shredded Duck (not the Jiang shredded). The food came out in no time and the display of the dish are just beautiful. The taste of the food was beyond beautiful and just so enjoyable. Nothing was over nor under cooked. The Combo hot pot was my favorite for the evening, it was not too spicy and it came with chicken, pork, fish, shrimp, veggies, and noodles...O-M-G....JUST great. The shredded duck was pretty good with the side of rice that we each had as well. We didn't want to get dessert and over-stuff ourselves and called it quits.
