My husband and I visited here just for fun last weekend. We have a small freshwater tank and a large saltwater tank, and have been pretty big in the hobby (him in particular) for the last ten years or so. Lately we've concentrated more on saltwater, but I've always had a soft spot for freshwater fish, and cichlids (the only fish they sell here) in particular. They are only open to the public on Saturdays, and it is just a huge warehouse, certainly put together with the idea of function alone. It was interesting to see how they were set up (big white tubs instead of glass display aquariums for most of the fish). They have photographs of the particular type of fish above the tubs which is helpful because 1) most were not super colorful, I am guessing because they were juveniles and 2) It's hard to get a great view looking down at them instead of straight on. In the back to the left are the larger fish and my goodness, there were some beauties! I was very impressed with the prices. I'd say they are comparable to what I've seen at other fish stores (even cheap-y places like Petco or Petsmart), and these are clearly quality fish. They seemed well cared for and happy. I also didn't see a single dead one. We were greeted when we first entered the building, but left alone after that, which is perfectly fine with me. I think there were two employees there, and they were just busy cleaning tanks and filling orders, but I'm sure would have gladly assisted us if we needed anything. I wish I'd lived in Utah when I had my old cichlid tank. I have truly never seen more gorgeous cichlids anywhere. read more

I ordered three young adult German Red Cichlids from LiveFishDirect.com. I am an experienced hobbyist, but this was my first on-line live fish order. Investigating, I found that they had very good reviews. After some initial, minor difficulties (mostly my fault), I received them active and very colorful. Following a quarantine period, they are the most colorful Peacock Cichlids in my large aquarium - in fact, they are the most beautiful cichlids I have ever seen - perfect size, deep blue heads and brilliant deep red bodies - they are truly of exceptional quality. Idk how everyone else's reviews are fucking great. I ordered a GBR last week, paid over $50 fucking dollars for this one fucking fish. Still isn't here. It was supposed to ship put on Monday and arrive Tuesday. Well Tuesday afternoon I checked my order status. It still says "not shipped" even though that was on the expected arrival date. I have tried to email Live Fish Direct 3 fucking times with no fucking responce. I want my fucking fish or my fucking money back. I'm absolutely pissed. Worst service ever. If I don't get an email back soon I'm just going to keep calling until they fucking answer. Or I'm calling the bank and reporting it so even though it'll take a week or more at least the bank will for sure be able to get my money back. read more

I just placed my first order with these guys when they offered $15 shipping. I ordered 18 fish and they all made it out here fine, nobody perished. I guess there was a heat wave going on in Utah, so they put in cooling pads in my order to keep the fish from being overheated. Josh is also really good with returning emails quickly. I'm happy with the way the fish look, especially the Maingano he sent me . Greatest mbuna out there in my opinion. I ordered a lot of juveniles but they seem fairly good sized. At the end I paid $6.33 per fish, can't complain about that. I plan on doing a large hap / peacock tank and I'll mostly be going with LFD based on this experience. read more

i want to thank Josh for his outstanding and personal customer service. i wrote him about a few fish that i got from Livefishdirect.com that were total duds. they're just brown mbuna cichlids that i can't even identify. i did get several that worked out well. still, it was about 50/50. Josh responded immediately and has offered me a free fish of my liking (he sent me pics of about 7 options) along with a cuckoo catfish that i offered to pay for and he doesn't appear to be charging me for. Josh seems to have a lot of nice fish, albeit most of them too small for my tank. mine is a mbuna tank and he has a great selection of young, mixed or unsexed mbuna. all the fish i've received from LiveFish have arrived in good condition and acclimated quickly to the tank. and i live in Philly while the fish live in Idaho (i think). the website is great, even if your orders don't necessarily correlate to what you asked for. some of the tiny fish i got are getting bigger and i'm not sure they are definitely males. so far i haven't had any frye yet. i give 3 out of 5 for this site, but maybe i should grade on a curve. most of the cichlid sites i visit are heavy on peacocks and light on mbuna. LiveFish seems like the opposite. Josh may have some misses, but he can also get some hits. i'll revisit this once my new free fish arrive. read more

Ordered fish with there free 4th of July Shipping. Got a total of 11 cichlids. A couple days later I wanted to added fish to my order and Josh was more than happy to add them. Unfortunately the extra fish never made it to the shipment. After contacting josh he apologized and offered to ship the extra 2 fish out asap. I didn't want him to lose money on shipment and was fine with just taking a refund. He even offered to give me a future discount.
