I had been struggling with a chronic calf pull that I was not able to rehabilitate for many months using rest, ice, stretching etc. Luckily while visiting Marblehead over Thanksgiving our host recommended Frank and he made time to see me the next day. He was able to deconstruct my standing and walking posture and the way I sat at my desk and figure out it was a case of sciatica, not a calf pull. The pressure I was putting on the sciatic nerve through the low back down to the calf due to incorrect posture was the root cause. No one had made these connections before and long story short, I am able to run five miles now without pain. In addition he's accessible by text if I have a question as I don't live in Marblehead. I've had chronic neck pain for around 6 years that began to travel into my shoulders. I tried deep tissue massage, months of PT, lidocaine injections, cortisone injections, acupuncture, acupressure, chiropractic adjustment, and dry needling. I have had a half dozen or so massages from Jessica Griffith at LivingWell. Yes, she's professional and punctual and skilled, but what really sets her apart from the many other massage therapists I've had is that she really LISTENS. She pays attention to what you need and what helps. If you wince at something or she notices your muscles tense at a movement, she asks if there is an issue. Most practitioners just give a blanket statement at the beginning like "tell me if the pressure is ok," and then, like a waitress, check in once more, during the massage. Jessica recognizes that while you may need a lot of deep, focused work on your lower back, even a light touch on your shoulder will make you wince. She pays attention. She sees that and adjusts or asks you about it. In addition, she isn't married to that, "this is what a 60-minute massage covers" formula. If you ask her to work on just your back and left leg, she'll do it without giving you any holistic mumbo jumbo about balance and such. As far as LivingWell in general goes, here's the deal: They have an on-line booking system which, as an introvert, I love. They don't make you wear silly robes and flip flops or sit around for 30 minutes reading Cosmo and drinking water with vegetables in it, all under the guise of relaxing. You have an appointment time and they keep it. Done. If you want manufactured relaxation, water features, new age music, patouchili, and refreshing cucumber water, go some place else. Here I am wondering why I hadn't walked into Living Well sooner.. This long review is for someone suffering from pain resulting from muscle injury and long term stress. After a couple car accidents, long term stress and medications prescribed en masse by physicians, my body and mind began to feel uncooperative. I felt disjointed and unable to describe my pain to physicians. My body was swollen, my brain was fogged and no matter how much walking I did, I couldn't lose weight. It seemed unnatural. On the way back from a morning walk, I experienced the straw that broke the camel's back. My leg swelled until part of my calf bruised. An ultrasound found a contusion underneath my skin and I was told by my physician to ice and keep my leg up for 48 hours. At this point in time, my doctors felt I should not be experiencing anything like this, I should be healed from the last accident and living a happy life. All my tests are normal, yadda yadda.. But this wasn't normal and I knew if I continued to butt heads with doctors my condition could go beyond the swelling and spontaneous body bruising. I had to take my health into my own hands. I scheduled an emergency Detox Wrap at Living Well and discontinued the medication I was prescribed for inflammation and nerve pain per my new primary doctor's orders. I met with Frank Corcoran, the owner at Living Well upon Lisa Voloto's suggestion during my Detox Wrap.. which was excellent by the way! I recommend it for anyone who is beginning a new chapter in their life. For me, it was to help shed all the stress and medication my body was desperately trying to rid on its own. My meeting with Frank changed my perception on how I viewed stress, muscle tension and the body's healing process. To my surprise, Frank explained that I was not ready for Bodywork. My stress and tension had a hold on me. He suggested I try acupuncture with Charlene. After that meeting, I was ready to forget everything I tried that wasn't working and move on to reconnect my body, mind and spirit. I set up a Free Trial Visit with Charlene the very next day. I was a little nervous.. I didn't know what to expect. I had an open mind and was honest with her about my needs and expectations. I sat down in an empty room, took of my shoes and laid back into the recliner. By the third needle poked gently into my leg, I had a feeling that I deserved this kind of individual attention.. then at the fourth, I was overwhelmed with emotion that was trapped for too long. I cried a little. As I sit here today writing this review, less than a month from my first visit to Living Well and 7 months since the last car accident.. Living Well has put the most considerable dent in relieving my tension and restoring my body to its naturally flowing state of being. My husband witnessed the relief I was getting and signed up for their 10 visit acupuncture package and he now joins me in the community acupuncture room. After my fourth acupuncture visit, my stress has decreased and each day is new. I wake up in the morning refreshed and rested. The swelling in my body has been going down.. My muscles continue to relax and release tension. I have more energy and my mind is less clouded.. I just can't say enough about how my experience at Living Well has changed my life. It's the day before the wedding and the boy and I are on our way to get a couples massage at LivingWell when disaster hits! THE NEVER ENDING SALEM TRAFFIC JAM FROM HELL. I'm told this is a daily occurrence in good old Salem and now having experienced it first hand, my heart goes out to all the good people who work and/or live in Salem and have to deal with it on a regular basis. At any rate this traffic jam led us to being THIRTY (that's 30 people) minutes late to our appointment. We called of course to let them know what was happening and that we were probably going to be late and updated them repeatedly as we trudged along. By the time we arrived I fully expected them to tell us they couldn't see us. It would've been completely fair of them to turn us away. Know what? They did no such thing. They brought us some water, led us to the couples massage room, told us to take a few minutes to relax and that our massage therapists would be in and that we'd still be receiving our full hour. I wanted to cry with joy and gratitude because after the drive we just had we REALLY needed our massages- forget the stress of the impending wedding. Best massage ever. I was suffering with infertility and had just about given up. After 6 1/2 years of trying, someone suggested I try acupuncture. I did it with that and a few other things as my "problem areas." I was pregnant less than 4 months later. I'll spare you the other details, but I fully think that my session here helped. Fast forward to this year. I am suffering from extreme tmj pain and a pinched nerve in my jaw. For two months, I would rock myself to sleep. Another friend (I have great friends) said "you HAVE to do acupuncture." I have had two sessions with Shaun and I am almost entirely pain free. The location is awesome. The community room is comfortable and like a cocoon of happiness. Shaun is amazing. I've been going to Massage Envy for a few years, but I wanted to see a massage therapist who was closer now that I've moved to Salem. I saw Victoria at LivingWell last week and even in her first go of getting to know my body, which suffers from chronic tension issues all over (not just my back), she was fantastic. Then I saw her again this weekend after a super stressful week and she was incredible. She's the massage therapist version of detail oriented, which is exactly what I need. She's also great at communicating and reading my reactions to things. She tried cupping on my muscles, too, which felt awesome. I feel very loose and relaxed now, which is not a sensation I'm used to!! I'll definitely be seeing Victoria regularly. Okay, this review is really for the New Living Well Office in Salem, MA on Washington St. I tried editing the address info but it looks like the folk at Yelp haven't gotten around to updating it yet. Went here for a couples massage with my bf while we were staying at a B&B for the weekend. Living Well Bodywork was recommended to me by my sister who lives in the area after a friend of hers had an appointment here. Right off the start when I called to make the appointment, the receptionist was friendly, and super helpful. I had a lot of questions and she took the time to answer them fully (believe it or not , but neither John or I had ever had a massage before!). Within a few minutes of making the appointment, I received an email confirmation with a google calendar attachment-which is awesome! Their website is well organized and has a lot of information about their services (massage, reiki, acupuncture, pilates classes etc), therapist profiles and offers the ability to schedule appointments online. Pretty cool and it seems to work pretty well. When you arrive, you do have to fill out some health background paperwork, but it's a great idea because the therapists look it over before they meet with you so they already know about your problem areas or any health concerns that they may be able to address. The office and rooms were clean and quiet, and the massage rooms were dimly lit and nicely decorated. The massage therapists we had, Nick and Marcel were great! At first, I really thought I'd be uncomfortable with a male therapist, but Nick made me feel completely at ease and relaxed. John definitely felt at ease at well with Marcel because he ended up drooling on the floor during the massage and we all giggled about it. When the hour was up, John and I got dressed and when we opened the door Marcel and Nick were waiting outside with glasses of water for us and walked us to the front room. Both John and I walked out of there incredibly relaxed, and very happy with our experience. The staff at Living Well Bodywork do a wonderful job in making their clients feel comfortable, and taken care of. I recommend them highly. I live over an hour away from here but I absolutely plan on going back. Soon! Bonus-We got a $10 off coupon for another massage and a handwritten note in the mail after our visit. Oh Marcel, Marcel... where have you been all my life? I've had a lot of massages. Some good--though most have been very disappointing. They've been disappointing enough for me to talk myself into plodding through pain rather than drop $X on a crappy massage in a house that smells like cat pee. After a weeklong trip in Mexico, complete with hard beds, endless train rides and long treks through cobblestone streets while dragging my roller bag behind me--I knew it was time to buck up and either smell the cat pee or find a new place to get a rub down. A work friend recommended Living Well and now I (my back, neck, wrists and shoulders) am forever in debt. The experience was perfect from the get-go. First of all, they allow you to book your own appointment online, which is so easy and so much less stressful than slogging through a schedule with a chatty masseuse who wants to talk about all the details of your life while you're on your office phone. It was quick, easy, and no fuss--with detailed bios of each therapist so you can select the best match for your needs. The office was bright, cheery and clean (no cat pee smell!), the folks at reception were cheery and helpful, and Marcel was a GENUIS! He talked through my issues and did an incredible job of mixing deep tissue, Swedish, Shiatsu, and sports massage to work out the kinks. The pressure was perfect and consistent and--most importantly--he was great at connecting muscles and intuitively knowing exactly where I needed the most work done. The only issue was I came ready to pay by credit card, which they accepted (they don't accept AMEX) but they can't include a tip in a credit card charge. Just be prepared for that. read more

I sent my husband here for a deep tissue massage. He had a gift cert. but it was still IMO pricey @ $85 for an hour. He had a male therapist and asked him to use alot of pressure, as he never feels like they go deep enough. He asked him more than once during the appt to do it harder, and he never did. Also, before they started he asked the him to please focus on his calves and legs as they we extremely tight, (he stands all day at work.) The therapist spent 45-50 mins on his back, and about 5 mins on each leg. He left really disappointed, and would probably never go back :( read more

I am very picky with my massage. I don't go to get a massage to be coated in lotion and sent on my way, I go for deep tissue work and therapeutic massage. I have gone through a number of different places and practitioners over the years for various reasons -To chatty -Canceled on me last minute -Didn't like the facility -Doesn't work on problem areas -Doesn't learn from likes/dislikes -Business failure You name it, that was my pattern until I came across Livingwell. I go to Kate who is AMAZING at deep tissue massage. You would not guess from looking at her that she has the strength of a bear. She is also personable but does not talk through my massage and ALWAYS does a great job. I have also gone to other practitioners at Livingwell when she was unavailable and been very pleased. There was only 1 incident where I was dissatisfied with my massage. The practitioner was more of a relaxation masseuses and a last minute replacement for the practitioner I had requested. She pretty much coated me with lotion and sent me on my way. I decided to call and let them know after the experience that I was disapointed in this particular massage (no fault to the practitioner) and it did not meet the usual standard I was accustomed to at their facility. The way they handled it was really great. They apologized and offered me another massage on the house. It was a great way to handle a tough customer and keep me coming back for more. Great Facility! The only thing their missing is hot tubs and saunas for soaking after the massage. I've had a GREAT first experience here (with Raven) and felt like a new person after the massage. I've had continued back pain and without getting too much into details she was able to directly localize the pain and relieved tension immediately. She keeps a deep and consistent pressure throughout the massage and makes you feel at ease. I didn't want to throw out her name because now it'll be weeks before I see her, but I must give credit when credits due. My second massage was about two weeks ago. I booked last minute and received and 1.5 hour massage with a therapist that had me feeling horrible and more so by the actual massage then how I originally felt walking in. I paid full price and tipped about 30% which some may not have done, but I didn't want to embarrass or insult them by complaining while they were standing there. This person was sweet as pie, but I'm not so sure they were confident in their skills or really knew what they were doing for that matter. Needless to say this therapist doesn't look to be with the company anymore, but I still intend on returning to Livingwell to work with Raven again. read more

My husband and I went here for a couples massage with a hot stone add on. The prices are a little higher than spas in the area ($170 for couples) but I thought the fact that you could add on the hot stone massage for $21 each was awesome. When I called to make an appointment the receptionist is very attentive. I think they have a full-time receptionist which I REALLY like. Many massage places have the therapists doing the bookkeeping. There is always someone to answer the phone at Living Well and you don't have to sit on hold. The spa is very nice and inviting. The have a lovely waiting area. We were taken right away to the massage room. The couples room we were in was a bit small. My husband and I plus two therapist was a bit tight but you aren't standing long anyway. The hot stone massage was AMAZING. The music was nice, the lighting was perfect, the heated sheets were awesome! I will definitely be going back. The pressure was perfect. My therapist was Nicole and she was awesome. There was a point where the pressure was a bit much. When I communicated this to Nicole she altered the pressure immediately and it was fantastic. This spa also does facials and other services. I plan on trying a facial next. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because there were some distractions during the massage. They are in a large building with several other offices, starbucks, bank, etc. A couple of times during the appt it sounded like they were moving things around in the backroom of starbucks and you could hear it in the room. It wasn't a horrible noise and it certainly didn't impact my relaxation too much - but it was noticeable. I will be back for sure! read more

I don't know why I waited so long to visit this spa for as long as I've lived in Salem! Had a 60 minute deep tissue massage with Britt that was divine. Wonderful, warm personality and I felt calmed just walking into the treatment room with her. Beautifully thorough and left me feeling like jelly afterward. Wish I had incorporated aromatherapy oils into my massage, but something to remember for next time because I will definitely be returning. The space itself is beautiful, clean, and calming. Front desk staff is pleasant, not pushy and just really sweet and attentive. From the moment I walked in, I felt like I was their only client and instantly felt like I was in good hands. I have used LivingWell regularly over the last 10 years and it is a fantastic spa. It is clean, well maintained, great value for money and the staff are wonderful. Frank's bodywork sessions are amazing and I have referred many people to him and all of them have been helped to recover from joint surgery and other sprains and strains. BEST FACIAL EVER! The esthetician, Lisa Voloto, is the skin whisperer. I suffer from adult acne, but since seeng Lisa regularly (once a month) my breakouts are far less frequent and the overall texture of my skin has significantly improved. Her technique is extremely hands on - she is always doing something. If there is a mask on my face, she will do an arm or scalp massage (she is also a licensed massage therapist so the massages are awesome). Because I have problem skin, I have tried everything but nothing has given me better results than regular visits to Lisa! It is such a great feeling to wake up and have glowing healthy skin. With Lisa you are able to relax, have stress relief, enjoy the facial but ALSO get results!! Also, the products used are amazing - GLO Therapeutics. Never had a disappointing experience at this spa. They hire only the highest quality practitioners. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because of the noise! The setup of the spa is such that the rooms don't buffer sound really well. You can hear all of the conversation in the lobby and the pounding of every foot that walks by the room. It's very annoying when you're trying to relax. The lobby either needs some sound proofing or the management should let their receptionists and customers know to keep the chat to a dull roar. read more

I purchased a gift certificate for a friend of mine who is having a "difficult pregnancy" as Living Well offers a pre-natal massage. She was hesitant as she "does not like people touching her" Had I known that going in I may have opted for a different gift but my friend begrudgingly accepted and went for a massage this weekend. I dropped her off and took her two girls and my niece for a stroll around Salem. When I got back to pick her up I could "see" the difference in her. She was glowing and not the pregnancy glow, but a glow of relaxation. She "loved it and will be back again" For someone who "does not like people touching her" she had a totally different tune post massage. LivingWell is great spa. I've been here for massages and facials, and I would highly recommend coming for either treatment. The facilities are clean, warm and soothing. Lisa is a skin miracle worker! I have been going to her for 4 or 5 years now for the pore purifying facial, and I wouldn't trust anyone else with my skin. She uses the right products, having adjusted them over time. I have had many massages in my lifetime. About a year ago, I got a massage from Lisa V. that was hands down the best massage I've ever had. Living Well's prices are a little out of my price range so I didn't have the opportunity to go back for awhile. I recently hurt my back and was in pretty awful pain. I was basically hunch back for days. Lisa took such good care of me. She made sure I was comfortable and she reduced my time slot from 60 minutes to 30 to be cautious of not causing harm (which I appreciated because it was clear she was more concerned for my wellbeing than compensation). While I'm still a little sore, I feel SO MUCH BETTER. I'm so grateful. She's absolutely worth the price. read more

I scheduled an acupuncture appointment with Shaun with the hopes of inducing labor (I was 3 days overdue). Shaun was very nice, and great at explaining what-was-what. It was my first acupuncture treatment ever, and though it was a little "intense" at times, I have to say it was worth it. I had my appointment on Saturday morning, went into labor Sunday night and had my baby midday on Monday- can't complain about those results! read more

The services here are always top notch. Massages are wonderful and very relaxing, they always listen to your needs and your comfort level. The facilities are gorgeous, updated and well maintained. They have a rotating staff though, by that I mean their staff doesn't seem to last very long. Just when I would get comfortable with one therapist, they would disappear and I'd have to select a new one. Another thing I have an issue with is that they are always trying to up sell your services or sell you an additional service. It seems that every time I go in, they are "recommending" another type of treatment or procedure. I realize this is how they get business, but it seems like to much pressure, especially after a very relaxing massage. Parking is also tough there. They have a public lot but you have to feed the meters. Always put in extra money past your schedule appointment end time! I actually got a ticket after a recent visit because my meter expired before I was able to get out and refill it. Sometimes noise from adjacent or overhead businesses can be distracting to your treatment as well. read more
