I went to Allie for my hair and makeup trial 6 months prior to my wedding. She knocked it out of the park and I booked my bridal party for my big day. On my wedding day, we went to the salon because we didn't have enough people for them to come to the hotel. I was visiting a friend in Boston and we had a big event we were going to in the evening. My friend heard about a cosmetic salon called Rouge in Salem that was supposed to be fantastic. We had an appointment mid day and got a little lost but called and Tracey talks us in and we found parking right outside the shop. Brandon welcomed us in and my friend Tracey, got him and my artist was Tracey. A lot of Tracey's in the world!!! They were both amazing and as they did our makeup they explained each product and matched each to our specific skin type and coloring. They must have worked on us for an hour and half and I learned tips that I know I can use for my everyday makeup and for special occasions like tonight. They make a drawing and list of all the products they used and give you a copy so that you can refer back to, when you want to remember or duplicate the look. They also keep a copy so when you call they can check out exactly what they used on you. There was never any pressure to buy anything and they even reviewed what we were already using and what products might compliment what we already had. I guess they have like 3 regular artist and several part time people which help out on busy days. Lots of bridal parties use Rouge and I can see why. All of their products are organic and natural so if you have sensitive skin they have products that would be safe to use. I live in Seattle but come to Boston once or twice a year and I intend to visit Rouge when I come out. Typically when you visit any establishment that sells any sort of beauty product or service they try to convince you that right now you look like Roseanne Barr but you could look like Adriana Lima if you only buy this cream, gel, tool, moisturizer, etc (wtf is an astringent anyway?) At Rouge Cosmetics they do not play with your self esteem in order to make a sale and I appreciate that. Marlo clearly considers makeup an art and helped me experiment with some looks I really liked. There was no pressure to buy anything but I ended up spending a small fortune because they carry some beautiful stuff. Any place with Nars and Bare Minerals is all right in my book! This small cosmetics boutique opened recently in Salem. For makeup, they carry Nars, Paula Dorf, and a mineral makeup line (Bare Escentuals, I think). They also carry many skin care lines, such as Caudalie, Kiehl's, B.Kamin, etc. For $50, you can get a makeover. Carol helped me and she was really good. I liked what she showed me. Everyone was really friendly. It's a good place if you need to learn about makeup but do not feeling like dealing with the mess that is Sephora (and don't need a big selection of brands). WOW, is that really me?! :) Every time I leave Rouge and Andrea's highly talented make up artistry, I can't help but stop to look in every mirror, window reflection, etc to stare in amazement that the pretty face staring back is really me!! :) Not only does Andrea have an eye for selecting fabulous colors that work great for me, she makes up my eyes absolutely amazing! Plus she is great at instructing how to recreate the look at home, and always makes sure I am kept up to date with the latest in techniques, and how I can keep my look fresh and stylish. And I always have so much fun spending time with her while doing so! I originally found Andrea about 4 years ago after being impressed watching her make up someone else. How fitting 2 women were lining up asking her to do their make up next, after they too were impressed watching her do mine when I was last in there a few weeks ago. And sure, high-end make up can add up. But when walking out of that lovely store with a beautiful makeover using high quality products, and more importantly being armed with colors you love, that you know as a result you will use till they are gone, and that you know how to use/apply, I feel it ends up being a great value and feel I end up saving money in the long run! Have loved Rouge in the past and counted on them for facials and change of season make up for years. This spring 2021 I went in for a seasonal make up update. I made an appointment and went in and spent about 45 minutes with an employe. She was helpful to a point. I picked out the items I wanted to buy and she selected them from the shelves and put them in the bag. When I got home the majority of the items were wrong or missing. I am obsessed with all things makeup, hair, nails, etc. So this is the kind of store I have to stop in every time I'm walking by. They have a mix of some brands you might find at Sephora and others you might only find in an upscale department store or boutique. I LOVE that they have Deborah Lippman polishes. So sparkly and cute! As far as major makeup brands they have a somewhat limited selection. Most of the counterspace is dominated by Bare Essentails, NARS and Stila. I went in looking for a new foundation and the owner? manager? helped me try a couple things. She was lovely, but honestly there weren't a lot of options. The foundation I ended up with made me break out terribly. And they don't accept returns. So i wasted 40 or so bucks .... I'm sticking with Sephora who has an incredible return policy. I may stop by to pick up something I know I already love but I will not be trying anything new here since there is no guarantee. read more

This is the first time I've ever wished it possible to give a place more than five stars. I'd read the reviews on Yelp before I made my appointment and I was totally stoked about the place before I even got there. Fortunately, they didn't let me down! Marlo is a makeover goddess! She did a great job doing my makeup and she's so friendly it made the time pass so quickly. She answered all of my questions about what I can do in the months prior to my wedding to get my skin in top shape for photos and sent me home with a handful of samples. Also, she asked me about my preferences with makeup and found me the perfect lipgloss (i.e. one that isn't sticky, has lots of color to it and doesn't wear off as soon as I talk). The natural light coming into the store makes it perfect for getting the right shades and colors and the vibe in the store is chic. I was surprised that the products I purchased were not more expensive as I've spent more at the makeup counters in Macy's for less personalized service. At $50 for service, I've already got a list of events for which I plan on coming back to have my makeup done. Also, their bridal services are very reasonable too - $125 for the bride; $75 for bridesmaids with a $50/pp addition if they come to you. read more

I truly love Rouge. Since the first time I walked in last year, I have had great experiences there. The first time was when I finally ran out of some old Aveda make up and found that Aveda no longer made the colors I used. I went to Lord & Taylor and found Nars, but they didn't have the colors I liked (only on display). So I went to Rouge where Marlo worked w/me on finding what works best for me. We found it and I walked out of there feeling very confidant. What I liked about Marlo was that I didn't feel like she was pushing anything on me, she helped me find what I needed and showed me some application tricks as well. She really met my needs. Since then I have gone in for other items and have been extremely happy w/all of my purchases. My mother and I had a great time there two Saturdays ago for a Caudalie promotion w/facials. The facials were awesome and on top of that, Marlo and Andrea gave us makeovers. In fact, when I asked Andrea to reapply what I had on, she said, "No way. Ever since the first time you came in here I have wanted to do your eyes. Sit down you are getting them done." And wow, did she do them! I should mention that I am typically a minimalist when it comes to makeup, but Andrea did things that I never would have thought of. In the wrong cosmetics shop this could be a bad thing, but this is another example of why rouge is the right cosmetics shop. Andrea really made my eyes stand out and made them gorgeous! Rouge is a must-stop for those who are looking for a personal experience and are tired of sketchy Sephora and the scary lights (and scarier sales people) at department stores. Each of the women who work there is an esthetician, and are truly pros at helping you find an exact match for your skin type and tone. I am the product police when it comes to parabens and pthalates, and the team at Rouge has been so helpful in finding creams and colors that work for me, without the chemicals. And after discovering that I'm allergic to zinc oxide, they worked tirelessly to find the best suncare out there (Coola Organics) that is zinc oxide AND paraben-free. In response to Alicia's negative review about their return policy: It's clearly stated at the counter that due to the unique nature of their product, they cannot accept opened returns. Duh. They're a small store and can't handle the kind of returns that say, Sephora or Avon can. BUT! They will make a sample for you of nearly everything they stock, so if you're unsure, ask them to make you a sample. And at the end of the day it's important: BUY LOCAL. As a woman who strategically avoids make up counters/beauty sales staff on a regular basis, I was faced with the reality check of needing to change the make up routine after a few years. After a few disappointing experiences at Aveda Salon's and being unable to force myself into a mall for a few months, I decided it would be worth while to check out Rouge after reading some great press. I figured it was a small enough store I could make a quick exit if all did not go well. Well, I have to absolutely agree with all the chorus of voices in high support of Andrea's beauty talents in her knowledge and skills in providing a makeover for me as well as many tips/techniques. It was a fantastic way to spend an afternoon off. It was my junior high fantasy long forgotten and able to meet my adult requirements of organic & "respectful" products. I really enjoyed how Andrea made me feel comfortable and by the end of the process, I was reminded of how much fun and interesting make up can be. Customer service is paramount to me and Rouge shines in this area as well The products are lovely and I can really see the benefits of quality eye colors as they really stay on all day long (usually under my eyes in newly formed dark shadows.) The overall look is great, I have been surprised by the positive comments I have received. While this place is great for many folks, I do offer enthusiastic thumbs up to the more earthy, less fashion involved/forward friends like myself. I got my hair done for my wedding here, and if I had to do it again, I would go someplace else. The updo was fine, but not what I wanted, and the experience was decidedly not good. I set up an appointment a month ahead of time, told them it was for my wedding, and emailed pictures (as they requested). I was told it would take an hour. The day of, they got started 15 minutes late, and the person doing my hair said they hadn't received pictures. I pulled up my email on my phone, and she was surprised it was for my wedding because it was booked as an updo (which I guess is different, and a wedding updo takes longer). She had to reschedule the client after me to accommodate the extra time, which I appreciated, but I couldn't reschedule my make-up artist who I saw next, nor the photographer I saw after that, nor the ceremony after that. The result was that I was an hour late for everything else. She was professional and worked as quickly as she could, but there really wasn't anything to be done about it; it was booked wrong, and it was what it was. The hairstyle itself was fine. It was pretty, and people liked it, but it wasn't what I wanted. I'm not incredibly particular, and so I said all I really wanted was a braid that went around the edge of my head and a messy sort of side bun. What I did not want was something that looked pretty from the side/back, but from face-on simply looked like a ponytail. I got a braid and elegant bun that you could only see from the side/back, and looked like a ponytail from the front. She asked if I was happy with it, and I'm sure she would have re-done it if I'd said no, but I was already an hour late for everything else, so I didn't have the luxury of a re-do. It was nicely done, but it wasn't what I asked for, sent pictures of, or wanted. I imagine one could have a great experience here, but for me, it was lack-luster, at best. read more

I discovered Rouge via a groupon I had purchased for a 1.5 hr personal make-up session. I chose 3 looks, was explained how they were being done while in progress and discussed complimentary color choices for this or that. I can't remember the name of the girl who helped me, but she was very nice and patient. I could tell she enjoyed her job because it showed in her service. The price is a bit steep (In some cases I felt more than Sephora, but I'd have to cross reference to be certain), and I don't think I'd be able to come here regularly for my beauty needs, but if I had money like that, I would gladly come here to have my make-up done for a variety of occasions! read more

I came in to get my hair and makeup done for a wedding I am going to. I am from out of town but i was not a fan. My hair came out messy and I had to have the girl redo it. Even after redoing it, I still need to fix it. My makeup was okay, nothing crazy special. What I would say is that if you are someone who does makeup well and has gotten makeup done before, do it yourself or go elsewhere. If you are a minimalist and don't know much about makeup, it's the perfect spot for the first timer. I have been buying my make up at Rouge for 5 years now and finally had an event to go to that I needed my make up done!! My husband may have thought I was a little nuts driving from Woburn to Salem (where I work) just to get make up applied for a wedding on my day off, but another option never crossed my mind. Tracy is amazing! I told her a few things I didn't love to see on myself but otherwise let her work her artistic magic. I was beyond impressed! I had a great experience at Rouge. I recently went from blonde hair to red, so I stopped in to see if they had any ideas for refreshing my make-up look to make the most of my new color. I didn't have an appointment (didn't even know they made them until later), but they sat me right down and started trying things on me. They asked me what I normally did for make-up and worked within my normal comfort zone. They did not push anything on me at all and were completely supportive in what I chose to purchase and what I chose to pass on. I am not a makeup person by any stretch of the imagination, but I needed to cover up some zits and random body bruises for a wedding. Attractive thought, huh? I walked in and told them I needed a foundation and cover up to help me. The staff were so friendly and immediately informed me that I didn't need any of that and could get away with a tinted moisturizer. They proceeded to apply it all over my face and show me how to do it on my own. I felt so enthused about my new found makeup adventure that I inquired about blush. Weeee! What an adventure they took me on. I cant give this place enough praise. They were so friendly, helpful and eager! They turned me into a makeup person!! They were never pushy though, and that's what I loved the most. They spent time covering everything up and trying different products out. At the end I asked them if I could buy a few of the particular products and they were very happy, almost surprised it seemed, that I did. A very pleasant experience. I will definitely be returning to add to my makeup collection! Okay I wrote that in December and never posted it. Now I have an update. Went in for special event makeup, and holy cow!! Makeup artist was nice. It was the owner that ruined the experience for me. I had scheduled my appointment and then THE NEXT DAY (still an entire week before appt) I re-scheduled (and this was still before expiration date). On the day of my appointment I drive over an hour to get there ... I also added time to allow for traffic to assure I would be on time. With these precautions, I arrive at 10:15...my appointment and when they open is 11am. This is good so now I can go get a cup of coffee at the Dunkin Donuts down the street. While I'm parked at the Dunkin Donuts down the street sipping my coffee, it's now 1030 (30 min before my appointment) I get a call from Rouge Cosmetics saying that I have to pay "the difference". I said I have a Groupon, what are they talking about that I have to pay "the difference". Me and the makeupartist went back a forth and then she agreed that I was in the right (because of what I said and the note that was left for her was not enough info to counter it) When I got there, the situation had turned back to that I now "owe the difference" again...she now had the owner on the phone. I showed my email with my appointment date AND voucher number sent BEFORE the expiration date and finally after 25 min back and forth saying the same things, it was agreed I did not owe anything...but even with that it was put (by the owner) as if SHE was doing ME a FAVOR. Despite all the proof I had infront of me, the back and forth went on for so long that now I was not even in the mood to get my makeup done, however since I had come from so far, I just went through with it...the whole energy around us was so disturbed. I had been so excited for this appointment and by all the reviews I had seen and it was all ruined by this horrible customer service experience by the owner prior to the service. read more

I was on the hunt for a new foundation, one that actually suits my pale yellow undertone skin. I had been to Macy's, Nordstrom, and Sephora, and the MAs had done what they could with their given lines they represented. But when I'd go outside, the foundation would be peachy or orangey! Enter Rouge. The MA (don't know what her name was) tried Nars, which based on reviews I was convinced would suit me, but I believed it was too peach. She suggested we try another company. This is the benefit of Rouge. The MA is not married to one line. She tried another company's foundation, then another. We found a perfect match with Stila. She also recommended giving the foundation a little time to oxidize, which is a real risk with me (foundation almost always turns orange on me). Her professionalism impressed me. I've been eyeballing Rouge since moving to Salem a of couple months ago & finally decided to stop in today. I typically solicit Sephora for makeup, but was happy to see that there was a place within walking distance from my house to pick up my brands & spoil myself. Now, I understand busy...but it's a small place & you cannot enter, walk around, etc without going noticed. No one greeted me, no one asked if I needed help or suggested it'd be a moment, no one even made eye contact! I knew exactly what I needed, waited at the register for someone, anyone-maybe even the girl standing RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME BEHIND THE COUNTER-to acknowledge me & was completely ignored. I was willing to wait, because it was busy & I was in no hurry, but after 5 minutes, I left & later made my purchase elsewhere. I'll likely give it another shot; It's gotten such glowing reviews! I read the reviews of both Rouge & Sephora, sooooo.....after debating between fighting the traffic to Sephora @ the North Shore Mall or heading into downtown Salem (with PLENTY of parking, just feed your meter!) I made the right choice and headed to Rouge! Being a gal who loves to look casual but cute, nice shoes yet low maintenance, my makeup was severely suffering! The same brown slap of eye shadow, lots of under eye cover up and boring same ol' routine for the last 10 years, it was time for a fresh start. Wow, I got absolute undivided attention from Alanna and help in easy peasy terms of what in the world to do to freshen up my look. She took the time to show me how I could incorporate different colors and not look like a showgirl. Also went away with some great application tips and an all over feeling of YAY, there ARE still nice people in retail!!!!
