I have one of those picky pampered kitties who will only eat certain proteins (chicken or turkey minced pate) and when he gets bored of the brand or flavor I need to rotate wet food without sacrifice to high quality protein organic pet food. I also have found one brand of dry kibble my kitty loves N&D from Italy, but it's not the easiest to find lately. I know it sounds crazy but can you imagine eating the same food everyday? I cannot and so I will cater to give my kitty variety. It's better for their digestive system and apparently this behavior is very common with his breed so it is almost inevitable we can't order cans by the case without waste... but we donate to shelters if we do:) Well sadly the neighborhood pet food stores in the area all closed due to economic turn down, so it has been one ginormous hassle to get open stock cans and my preference is to support local businesses. I googled and called a few stores to see what brands they carried, and when David answered the phone (who btw is related to Liz - a true family biz) I just knew this was going to be the start of a good pet-partnership! They carry the brands of food I was familiar with and David explained they have a pet rewards program too! They are located in Ukranian Village which isn't very nearby but David offered complimentary delivery right to my building, text me when he arrived and even tossed in a few extra samples treats for us to try. I've never met Liz, but the people working there the times I've been in are so nice, helpful, and welcoming to my dog and me. They carry Fromm's which is such a great kibble option, high quality and less expensive than other high quality options. If they don't carry the variety you want in-store they will order it for you. They have a great loyalty program that discount-wise is better than the big-box chain pet store loyalty programs (aka save money!). I am obsessed with Liz. She saved my golden retriever. And also knows everything about anything dog-related. She's basically a free-advice functional medicine vet. I literally went to Dr. Royal who is amazing by the way who is a functional medicine vet and she told me a majority of what Liz also told me which is diet diet diet. My dog Griffey was getting hot spots as a puppy and losing his hair, the conventional western medicine vet just put him on an antibiotic and said that it's normal. After changing his diet to full raw (listening to Liz and Dr. Royal) - his fur is like silk and is the happiest and healthiest golden. I admit that it's expensive but so is eating organic and purchasing local products from farmer markets. In the long run, I think we will save more money on keeping him healthy than paying towards vet visits. I am totally new to the raw food diet, but she guided me through the process of switching her food as she is ten years old and use to the same kibble. Stopped in on a whim and I'm glad I did! The owners are very nice. They ended up chatting with me and my fiancé about their products, our pets, the nutritional benefits of buying healthier food and their background. I ended up buying a cat tree for my cat. It's made from an real tree with a tree trunk and branches! It's very sturdy, strong and wasn't that expensive compared to some of the cat trees sold online. I am so thankful to have found Liz's Pet Shop. My 11 year old Lab has been suffering from allergies and GI issues and we wanted to try something other than medication (which only temporarily treated my dogs issues). I've been going to Liz's Pet Shop for about 6 years and I can't believe I haven't written a review yet. Liz is extremely knowledgeable on pretty much everything in the store. The other staff members are as well. Buying raw food is very important to me because of the fillers and junk they put in most kibble and she recommends the most sustainable/ethical companies which is supremely important when purchasing raw food. Wasnt a very warm welcome. I needed feeders for my lizard ( Argentine B&W Tegu ) and asked what type of feeders they had. The lady at the counter mentioned "mice or what were you looking for?" I said "birds?" And she was sort of flabbergasted as if it was impossible for anyone on the planet to sell frozen chicks for their reptiles and proceeded to tell me all she had other than mice were rats. She assumed I had a snake and I clarified and appreciated how inquisitive she became about my lizard after I told her he eats chicks and mice or rats as well. However once she showed me her stock it was either tiny mice or huge rats, not any variety in size or types of feeders which made me wonder why she asked what I was looking for as if there was much to choose from. I tell her thank you but none of this will do. If it was a matter of stock being low due to COVID I wish she would have mentioned that. Instead I got a "sorry this is all we got take it or leave it vibe". I then remembered I needed a leash for him and she was sort of reluctant to show me what they had as they "didn't have leashes for reptiles" but pointed me in the direction of where they were anyways. I then realized I needed a harness as well showing her one that I believed would fit my lizard (xs size for about $9) and was told "oh you meant a harness" as if I didn't know what I was talking about. She then talks me out of the sale saying his body/skin would tear the harness. Which I found interesting because she had no knowledge of the type of lizard he was before I came in. Maybe she meant no harm by all of this and I was over-reading the situation but I didn't feel welcomed and felt the experience lacked sales tact. It was like "this is what we have but we don't really serve your kind (tegus...that is)". I would have given the experience 3 stars had I walked out with something (advice, recommendations, etc.). My pup has been in and out of the vets office since we adopted him. The vet would give us antibiotics, cortisone injections and would recommend any other thing they could think of to help. All of his symptoms would subside right after the treatment; however, soon after his symptoms would return and it would always seem to be way worse than before. In comes Liz's Pet Shop. After all of the vet visits and so much money down the drain, Liz changed our pup's life! My wife and I chatted with Liz about Ashland's health concerns and she shared her thoughts and recommendations. We weaned him off of the meds the docs gave us and slowly incorporated all of Liz's recommendations. He is now a healthy 3 year old pup! I can't even imagine where he would be without Liz and her crew. I do want to call out that Liz can be a bit direct and it can come off as being judgmental. It honestly did not bother me but I imagine it could be a cultural difference in communication. As for the store, they carry only the healthiest and cleanest of products. I think they have over time become more flexible with what they carry to appease the masses but for the most part i feel vert comfortable giving my healthy pooch all of their products. They carry a variety of foods, meds/vitamins, treats, washes, leashed, etc. You name it they have it! All in all this is a great local spot that I feel comfortable supporting and it doesn't hurt that my Ashland loves going here too! Oh, if you were curious, Ashland has environmental allergies that were being treated with meds at the vet. Let me tell you...I WAS the a**hole that did NOT believe in all this fancy food for dogs. I was like BS, they are just trying to take advantage of pet owners and the love they have for their pets. I had a Shih Tzu who lived for 16 years on Science Diet and I thought that was okay for my Weimaraner and Cocker Spaniel. Well...my Weimaraner and Cocker Spaniel are now 8 years old - the Weim has diabetes and my spaniel has small tumors. I took my Weim to the vet where he was diagnosed with diabetes and we were trying to regulate it with insulin. I asked the vet should I change his diet, she said no - let's see how he reacts to the insulin first. After a week, his glucose levels were still very high and the vet suggested more insulin, and I asked again - should I change his food? She said no. I was annoyed because normally, for humans you would change your diet if you had diabetes. Instead, she just recommended more insulin. I went online and started doing some research on dog diabetes and read about the level of protein and raw food. I was concerned about doing raw food on my own, so I just switched to a dry food with higher protein (Blue Wilderness). With the higher insulin and with Blue, his glucose levels were still VERY high. So, I started making food at home, eggs, straight chicken and my Weim's glucose levels started normalizing. I realized that my dog needed other vitamins and nutrition than just protein so I started looking into natural raw dog food. I came across Liz's pet shop after 17 layers of internet searching and decided to check out their raw dog food selection. I was BLOWN AWAY from the service and education I received from Liz. She even told me that she will show me how to prep raw food on my own so I can save money. I purchased some raw dog food, a better quality of dry food to wean them off dry food (Blue Wilderness/Buffalo is crap btw) and real Fish Oil (recommended by Liz). I gave my dogs a combo of raw food, new dry food and fish oil and they LOVED IT. The best part, my Weim's glucose levels were much lower than I have ever seen it before. His energy was so much better as well. Yes, I am now a believer of raw, natural food for pets and the proof is in my pets - I only wished that I wasn't so stubborn 8 years ago. Everyone loves this store so much, I figured it was the perfect place to go for advice on good seed mix brands for some finches I've recently acquired. I had all these questions lined up for the owner, Liz, and took an empty backpack, expecting to come home with lots of goodies for my new friends. First of all, I am not stupid about birds. I worked with them regularly as a vet tech and volunteer doing bird rehab every week. It just so happens that I've never kept them as pets until now. When I got there the store was empty and Liz greeted me and asked if she could help me. I basically told her exactly what I had planned to...that I didn't like the quality of the finch mix at the store I bought the birds at, and thought that the youngest bird might not like it either, since he is only eating millet right now and not touching the mix. She asked where I had bought them, and I told her (a major pet store) and she immediately clammed up and said she couldn't help me. She told me the store sold sick birds and didn't even have a permit to be selling them -- that all of these stores were under a "bird quarantine." (I called the company and Googled this...there was a quarantine of Georgia area stores last year that has since been lifted...that's it). She said she couldn't help me because the young bird was probably sick and needed to see a vet. Then she just stared at me blankly...so I said, "Okay, well what do you recommend in terms of a good food?" "Well, they make finch mixes," she said, and as I looked behind her I saw bins upon bins of custom mixed seed that she obviously wasn't going to offer to sell me. Then another customer came up behind me and greeted Liz familiarly, and that was it, I had lost her attention. I left feeling really belitted. I am only giving her two stars because I don't want to discourage people from giving "the little guy" some business. If you didn't buy your bird from Ms. Perfect, though, don't expect any help or respect. read more

Do you have a cat with foul breath? (It's okay, I won't judge you) Do you not have an extra $1,000 dollars for cat anesthesia and dental cleaning? (Me neither.) I love my cat, I hate his bad breath and do not want to neglect any underlying health issues it may present... like my wallet, the timing for pet dentistry couldn't be poorer; I just moved, so to say I'm broke at this moment is no exaggeration- moving really takes it out of your bank account! Kelp Help, I mean, Liz is the answer. We call it "miraculous" You sprinkle the green, fine-powdered kelp on kittie's breakfast and he wolfs it down like a kid with candy. He loves it and it helps him so much! Not cheap to buy but lasts a while and really does the job at keeping cat breath tolerable, teeth cleaner, tooth issues at bay and me bolstering my bank account to travel to Iowa (where kitty cat dentistry does not cost as much as much as a luxury vacation!) read more

Also, she rather you have the right fish or the right cat food even if it means she makes a smaller sale...I saw it happen and I respect the hell out of that! It's not a PetCo or Pet Smart, it's small and sorta cramped but there seems to be a little bit of everything. Also, they offer a guarantee on items, just ask. We were referred to Liz by a wonderful sales person from a different pet shop (it shall remain unnamed to protect the salesperson), now that alone told me I needed to go check her store out. Our chihuahua recently had 5 pups and we needed to get milk replacement to help with the feeding. We were told by the sales person aforementioned that fresh goat milk was the way to go and that Liz had it. While the shop is at the other side of town for us we don't regret taking the trip. I have been looking for a bird for about the month now, and I have visited a few pet stores, like the Pet Co's and such, and none really compare to Liz's. Its not your typical pet shop in that it doesn't stock as many animals as they possibly can. Even her business cards say "handfed birds- by request." She was so helpful, and showed us what babys she currently had up for sale. She had three Sun Conures, two of which were already sold. She even asked if we wanted to hold the one that was still for sale, not knowing if we even were intending to buy it! Most "Pet stores" will not do this. We sanatized our hands and spent quite a bit of time with the little bird, and needless to say, we put a deposit down on him. Hes not ready to go home yet, and thats just fine. We still get to go in whenever we can and bond with our bird. Now this is the part that really got me, and I dont know any other bird sellers that do this. Before we get to take him/her home: The bird will be checked out by an avian vet, sexed, and they are even going to check the birds liver for bacteria (minor surgery) They do this, because if there is bacteria present, the bird WILL become sick within the next 6 months or so. Im impressed. She also boards birds and has a great selection of cat and dog food! read more

After my last cat lost her battle to kidney disease for 2 and half years we decided to adopt. I swear I was going to feed my new kitty totally different food than I did my other cat (i blame the pet food industry for her kidney failure) So, when we adopted our cat Miso last year we soon discovered that she had food allergies. So, not only did we need to buy her "better" food but now we are forced to buy "special" food. My cat is on a very strict diet. Grain free and venision. Good luck finding that just anywhere. I am extremely lucky to have Liz's pet shop just a few blocks away from my apt. If you go in there and tell her what you would like to do for your pet she will have plenty of suggestions. I have tried mostly everything she suggested including putting my cat on probiotics. It's pretty cramped in there but it's filled with the best food you can feed your pet. Very pricey but that's good to know before you go in there and look around. My kitty just loves the food. The only problem is that the hours aren't that great. I have called her and told her i was on my way and she stayed open an extra ten minutes for me. Now that's service. read more

I was inspired to write a review about Liz's after I went in this weekend to buy kitty his food. I didn't see it on the shelf and decided to ask if she was getting more soon before I tried another brand. She explained to me that although she was sorry I would have to switch, she couldn't justify carrying the brand anymore. Not only did she say they were changing their formula to contain less protein, but they were also raising their price. She admitted it didn't make it a bad brand, but it no longer met her standard. I was so impressed! Cat owners! She carries World's Best Cat Litter! Did you know that the dust from regular kitty litter is dangerous to your cat's health and your especially in small spaces? It can have some of the same harmful effects as smoking. This corn based litter is close in price, lasts twice as long and is better on the environment. Check it out! If you don't understand the passion of a small business owner trying to provide honest advice and the best products available, then you won't like this shop. If you want an education on why spending the extra $2 on a bag of food is worth it for the nutritional value, ways to extend the life and health of your pet as well as extra confidence in the products you are buying, then this is the store for you. read more

Let me start off by saying that Yelp brought me to this place. The reviews about the personalized recommendations, the attentive customer service, and the fantastic products are all completely accurate. I stopped in here with the intention of switching my dog's food (which is already a healthy grain free brand!) to an even healthier grain free brand. It's totally true that dog food companies that spend all of their money on marketing and advertisements are the very ones that put the worst ingredients in your dog's food. Thus, heading to Liz's, where there are many unheard of brands and small companies that use the best ingredients, is totally a learning experience. Both Liz and her staff were incredibly knowledgeable and offered many options for food and treats for my dogs. They explained, in detail, ingredients and various products and gave me options to choose from. They were also very conscious of price ranges and budgets. While I found the loud screeching of the birds for adoption here occasionally distracting, the whole experience was really great. I am so happy I finally stopped in here!!! My cat had a very bad reaction to a big brand food (Sheba) so I started looking for alternatives. Liz is so knowledgeable about pet care and I'm so happy I talked to her. My eleven year old cat now eats a raw diet. He has fully improved from the bad reaction to the big brand food. He has also had watery eyes and benign ear polyps for quite some time and my vet could never figure out the cause.
