As I was wrapping up my Christmas shopping, I realized that we were low on cat litter. Although I didn't call ahead to see if they were open this morning since many local retailers tend to be closed on the 24th., the Yelp page of "Your Best Friend Pet Supply" gave me assurance that they would try to stay open 365 days a year because our lovely pets can't really differentiate weekdays, weekends, and national holiday. Indeed, they were open! It's a great neighborhood pet store, carrying a good variety of cat litters, dry cat food, and can cat treats. The prices were fairly reasonable in comparison to the big-bucks national chains. Once again, I always want to support the local businesses as much as we can at all levels. The owner was very, very nice. I knew he was a little busy, for he was cleaning up the dog poop. There was also an older gentleman, assuming to be the owner's relative or friend. He introduced us "Shelby." She was being comfy at the couch. We also got our cats, Meowth and Persian, the "Puurfect Bistro" canned treats. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all the pet lovers out there! Street parking can be found along Division. We took the blue line CTA and got off at Division/Milwaukee. TW: racism I have never taken time to write a review for a restaurant, a department store, or any other place in my entire life. It breaks my heart to leave this review for a small business, but I am doing so for the safety of our neighborhood and community at large. I live right across the street from this store and I have two cats. One cat recently went to the ER for a suspected urinary blockage and I popped in the shop for the first time a few weeks back to see if I could get him some liquid form of treats so that he could enjoy them while he is recovering. In the first 10 seconds of me entering the shop, I was greeted by an older man with a beard (assuming he is part owner). He asked what I was looking for. I asked him if they carried those cat go-gurt type treats (i.e. Churu). I didn't even finish my sentence before this man went off on me with a very derogative and racially motivated rant about how those types of treats are "made in Taiwan" and "if they're made in Taiwan they're basically made in China" and he doesn't carry them in the store because "who knows what the Chinese people are feeding their animals because who knows what they're feeding their people." I was dumbfounded. My jaw was on the floor. For reference, I am a white woman. This man felt safe enough to spew hate and go into racist rant thinking I would receive it and agree with him. I picked my jaw up off the floor and straight up told him that I don't agree with him and he should not be saying those things. I wasn't even in the store for 30 seconds! The ignorance, the superiority complex, the HATE that was spewing out of his mouth...absolutely abhorrent and shameful. Josh is better about getting the food I need for my cat than I am! I recently switched to raw cat food. Not only did he have the hard-to-find, novel protein I needed he put it on auto-order for me so when I ran out and called in a panic he already had 2 more bags in stock and ready to go. This guy is on it, polite, and the best part, super efficient. He never wastes a second of my time or tries to talk my ear off. This is a real hidden gem in the city. Josh is clearly some sort of Dog whisperer because my little american bulldog/pittie was in love with him. Josh was so loving and professional with Apollo and made us feel like we were family with him. He recommended a perfect harness for him and great treats too. It helps that Josh also has incredible humor and keeps it real! Def our speed. If we lived closer, we would most likely be there every day. Joshua and Your Best Friend Pet Supply saved the day. I was on 290 from the northwest burbs when I realized I forgot my puppies leash and harness. So just look for the closest one around that had good reviews and your best for his pet supply popped up. It's a little bit out-of-the-way but I thought I'd give it a shot since the reviews are so good. Yelp never fails or disappointed it didn't last time either. The owner Joshua was there and was very helpful. And yet all the supplies I need it to pink harness and a pink leash. He asked me if I was the right size harness I thought I believe so I wasn't sure and he told me not to destroy the packaging that if it doesn't fit make it back we get one that will. I This store is everything you expect from a mom-and-pop shop. He had two little Yorkies walking around very well behaved dogs. A little bit of everything and not a lot of everything which is perfect for going into go on out. The prices were comparable to your big store chains. I called ahead to see if this store carried dog shoes, as I prefer to shop local when possible. The store owner was super nice and welcoming on the phone stating they had tons of pairs. He encouraged me to bring the puppy in so we could measure his paws and accurately get the correct shoes. When we arrived to the store, my dog immediately felt bad vibes and didn't want to go inside. The owner didn't offer to hold the door or explain why both of his mean little dogs are off a leash sitting on a couch at the front of the store. I felt like I was walking into someone's living room and interrupting. I tried to shake it off and remind myself that my dog really needed the shoes because of all the salt/snow. I started questioning what types of shoes they carried and what the difference was. The owner was extremely short, only really acknowledged the dog, and seemed annoyed. Even though he was helping me, if someone came in, he drop me and would go talk to them. I ignored this and tried the pair of shoes on my puppy. They seemed a bit small and told him that. "No, they are the perfect size. I'll show you, hold him." *holding my dog* "Not like that, actually pick him up!" *shoves shoes on my dog* I was uncomfortable the whole time I was in the store. Before I left, the owner offered me a sample of food and asks what I feed my dog and if he can show me how's its bad for my dog. He googled my pet food and talks me through the ingredient list. The sand litter that my cat has in her poop cage is empty. I decided to go here to buy some liters of it. I'm choosing between lemon and strawberry. Last time I bought lemon and it smelled sour. So we don't like its smell. Then we choose strawberry litter sand. It's a little bit expensive compared to the lemon litter sand. Aside from that I also bought a treat for my cat. I bought salmon and cat flakes. Salmon has a cheaper price and cat flakes have a higher price. One shirt has grabbed my attention. It looks cute for my cat. It has a design of a spiderman. This might be the only store in Chicago that still has ALL SIZES OF SALT SOX shoes!!!! Jose was so friendly and happy to help. Tuna (little Westie puppy) and I went in to try the shoes on her. She walked in very happy and curious and was sniffing everything. Josh was very knowledgeable and helpful. He showed me the best way to put shoes on her and how to keep them on. The shoes are a little pricey but well with the price. We've tried 4-5 maybe even 6 pairs and they're all too big, fall off, she won't walk, something wrong. My cat is a princess. I know he is a BOY cat, but that doesn't mean his behavior is any less princess-like. This man-cat-princess has long hair and a sensitive stomach. You do the math. He tends to barf. (Or it might be food allergies. No one is really sure.) It makes me feel wretched when he gets sick, so I am constantly on the lookout for new food for him. This generally means that I cannot buy the regular food at the grocery store. Lucky for ME, Your Best Friend is just a few minutes from my apartment. They carry high quality pet foods, including the chicken food that Ox likes so much. (P.S. If you order a case, you can get a discount.) The owner is a peach. He took the time to explain what particular ingredients are easier to digest (critical for a man-diva-cat like mine.) We found a new food and I was on my way home. And his little pups are sweet and welcoming. I like them too. What's not to like? I'm grateful that I decided to pop in there one day to check out the goods. So is my man-cat-princess. I happened to be leaving a restaurant near division street and remembered I needed cat food! Lol it was almost midnight but the lights were on so I knocked on the door and Josh opened up. Our persnickety Shar Pei is quite selective with his food, and we were steered in the right direction after being provided with MANY free samples. Seriously, I think our dog went a week on free food. Josh carries products worthy of hard-earned dollars, and has great knowledge on all of them. His store is a great break from the cold weather on long walks; as it seems the door is always open. I came into this store knowing what I expected of a dog food, and they were able to find me exactly what I wanted. Very knowledgeable! He even helped me find boots that stay on my fickle boston terrier. The service was great. He walked my huge bag of food across the street for me to put it in my car. Also, the prices are reasonable. So we bought a new puppy. The puppy instantly turned into our first born child, and we became "those parents" who worry about everything.. So you can imagine what tough critics we became (*ashamed*). Prior to bringing the puppy home, we stopped by Your Best Friend to meet Joshua as we had ready so many great things on Yelp about him and his store. We prepared a list of what we thought we would need, and proudly brought it in. Upon meeting Joshua, instantly you could tell how kind, caring, genuine, and passionate about animals he really is. He helped us stock up on our list and offered his expert opinion on other things that would help us with our puppy - without being pushy. Very helpful to say the least. Joshua was just as excited as we were for our puppy, and was so helpful prepping us for "parenthood". Fast forward one week later, we brought our puppy home. 1 hour after getting home, I had a concern. Rather than calling the rescue, or a vet, I called Joshua. At 9:30pm on a Friday night. (#crazymom). Joshua was so calm, and helped me through my nerves and encouraged us to bring her in to his store to explore. We did, and our pup got the royal treatment! She loved every minute of her visit to 'Your Best Friend' and loved the treats Joshua gave her. We loved the support and advice! Fast forward 3 days later. New Mom freaks out that her child, I mean puppy, isn't eating enough and is failing at feeding her pup. What does she do? Call Joshua, and he instantly helps and calms nerves. Okay..you get the picture. Here's the point - Joshua is one of those people who is in business because he is passionate about what he does and he CARES about the people and their pets who come into his store. He doesn't carry anything in his store that he wouldn't give/feed his own dogs (Chloe and Molly) and knows the nitty gritty on every product and why it is beneficial to you and your pet. He was also very honest to let us know that something was a little bit more expensive, but upon sharing the price with us, he showed us a YouTube video on the benefits of it. Just to help us. I Love My Best Friend pet supply. They are open late and within walking distant from my house. My pups, Sampson, loves to sniff around the store and Josh is always there with treats... the fastest way to my pup's heart! There are only a handful of places in the city that stock my dog's food and My Best Friend pet Supply is one of them. They have also saved me a bag from their order before and provided me with TONS of samples when they have run out of stock. I came across this store on a Sunday afternoon when nobody else was open... and it has truly been our new best friend. There aren't many places open on a Sunday evening, and definitely not a lot of stores where I can let my two pitbulls roam around freely. The "in house" dogs are adorable... Josh is super helpful and incredibly dedicated. The first time my dogs were in his store, he got online to research what they were eating and what changes we could make for their benefit. This review is long overdue. We have been customers of YBFPS since we moved to Chicago over two years ago and will be for a long time to come. Our first experience with the owner, Josh, was quintessential of his amazing level of service. When we first arrived in town, my wife was calling a variety of stores to see if they carried a particular brand of dog food. He had just answered the phone when spotty reception inside a Target dropped the call. When we left the store 15 minutes later, Josh actually called her back to make sure she was OK and answer her questions. Needless to say, we gave him the business, and have been coming back since. A few reasons you should consider it too: - Josh makes a sincere effort to open his store to you and your pets. During the winter, we would walk our dogs to his store where they could warm up, get some attention from other owners, and play with his two little ones (Chloe and Molly). It really does feel like he's your pets' best friend! - Josh knows quite a bit about animals that well beyond that of typical pet stores, such as overall health, behavior, and other animal resources. He's always quick to lend a perspective whenever he can, including look up something on the internet for you. - He carries only the best brands he can, so you can feel good that what you give your dog is good for them. However, if he doesn't have something in stock, he can order it for you or do his best to tell you where to find it. - He keeps amazing hours. He loves his business and what provides his customers, and will stay even later to make sure you can get you what you need--many holidays included! We've moved away from Josh (20 minutes by car), but we still go there for all our needs even with a chain pet store less than a block away because it's totally worth it to us and our pets. read more

I am finally getting around to reviewing this place. I was a long time customer when I lived in the neighborhood. Josh is so very helpful and you can tell he has a real love for pets. My dog Maya has a sensitive stomach and would have allergic reactions to certain foods. he recommended grain free, and even better recommended Taste of the Wild which is a way better price point than Natural Instinct. More flavors to choose from too. But he taught me that too many proteins can upset the stomach. Thank you for the tip! Bringing your dog in is encouraged. And definitely go there during the summer and get some doggie ice cream. It's homemade! My dog loved walking home summer nights with her ice cream. It's great to see a passionate business owner doing what he loves. This is a great shop to support and get all your pet supplies. Josh has even offered to order certain things as well. Finally started reviewing people on here even though I never had in the past. I wanted to make this one of the first few reviews. I have lived in and out of the area for around seven years and just recently started buying food for our dog from Josh. Honestly, I am shocked there are any bad reviews and I think people may have had an off experience those days. Every time I have stopped in there, Josh has been more than cordial and ridiculously helpful. He takes it a step further and goes through the piles of dog food for you, carrying the heavy bags over to the counter so you don't have to. Obviously I am big enough to carry the heavy dog food bags but he always offers to help us outside and I hear him doing so for other customers who parked as well. I know people mentioned in past posts that he is watching movies or took an active interest in asking about someone's animal, trying to help out. I guess I don't find any of those things offensive but everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I just don't see any reason whatsoever to not recommend Josh and his shop. If you have a rescue, new pup, or a dog from any walk of life, I highly suggest bringing them to Your Best Friend Pet Supply. It will be beneficial to your canine and also yourself. I rescued my current dog a year ago and he would not listen or obey any commands and had serious trust issues with men, which led to barking/charging at most. I informed Joshua of this upon Benji and my arrival (we had only stopped by for dog food, and received an impromptu training lesson). Joshua listened intently and began demonstrating how to handle certain situations as they arise. He is not pushy towards selling his products; he genuinely loves dogs and wants to help. How can you not support a man who always keeps an iceberg in the dog dish outside and hands out (free) pup-sicles on a sweltering day? Keep up the excellent work, Joshua! My review is based on my first time walking in late on a week night. I was pleasantly greeted by Joshua and his two adorable dogs Molly and Chloe. My dog Parker and I were just on our way back from a late night ice cream run and I had just been day dreaming about a place that would be open late for Parker and I to enjoy a cold treat on a hot summer night. Well, after telling Joshua about my "dreams" he went back and fetched my Parker Boo a homemade banana peanut butter ice cream pop with a rawhide popsicle stick! (too cute, right?) She absolutely loved it and while she was contentedly licking her way to doggy heaven, Joshua provided me with valuable answers to some of my questions regarding training tips and socialization techniques for Parker. He also let her run around and play with Molly and Chloe and gave her some new toys to try out. He definitely makes this store a customized experience which I really appreciate.
