Stopped by for ice cream with my family this evening and was glad I did. Loard's has plenty of parking in the surrounding area, and the shop has a ton of indoor and outdoor seating. The interior has that old-school ice cream parlor vibe. Our server was super friendly, offering us plenty of samples. She was patient and didn't rush us either, which was greatly appreciated. I ended up getting the Maple Walnut in a sugar cone and that was delicious, it reminded me of a maple donut in the best way possible. I had caught on the phone wanted to know if they had black walnut in stock they did I drove down there. It was crazy traffic because there was a rodeo parade in Castro Valley that particular day but hey, I still got my ice cream. The place is clean, cute and the staff friendly but tend to defer to each other to answer simple questions. Unless they lower prices to a reasonable amount I don't see them being the go to place. This location is the biggest i've seen so far in their mini-chain. They also sell chocolates, candies, the usual ice creamery menu. There's table service too. Ice cream is good, I can't complain about that. Service at this location not so good. Got there at about 840, and there was a line out the door they close at 9 PM. I was to be serviced and they decided to ring up the lady behind me who was buying some self-serve pints. They then proceeded to make her ice cream cones I had of mine, which was kind of rude and unappreciated. As we sat down and ate at 8:55 PM I'm guessing the owner is who she was, basically made announcement that they were closed and everybody had to get out. At least that's how we interpreted it. It wasn't busy but there was only one older Asian lady working so it took a little while. All ice creams are covered which is a nice change from other ice stores... This was my fist time here. The ice cream was good. I tried the Ube flavor and it was delightful. Texture was creamy and tasted homemade. I arrived about 25 mins before closing and it seemed like the Asian lady behind the counter was already cleaning up and getting ready to close up shop. I asked for a taste of the ice cream before making a decision to purchase and was given a questioning look and asked "You want to try it?"....almost as if it would be a slight inconvenience for her to serve me a taste. Eventually, she handed me a small spoonful to try and I did make the purchase, but I thought the service was so-so. I don't know if it was because it was late in the evening or if the server just isn't happy with her job, but whatever the case is.... I think if customer service was better, it would make customers feel more welcomed. Overall, I think the shop appears to be clean with ample seating. They carry a wide variety of flavors of ice cream, which is great. But this isn't one of those places that has left me craving for more. I went to Loard's Ice Cream tonight to check it out for my son's birthday in a couple of weeks. First of all, the service was terrible. The person who helped us wasn't very friendly and wanted to be somewhere else. My wife had to ask the counter person twice to sample a flavor. As I a waiting another lady flew from the backroom of the store and snatch about 6 dollars worth of one dollars bills out of the tip jar. I am thinking what the hell is all of that about. Not a clean place and has negative ambiance with things taped up and no table arrangements. There was a sign that said we couldn't eat inside, but the surly and s l o w server said we could. They don't offer water, you can buy a bottle. There is absolutely no service, and never a trace of a smile or courtesy, but when we paid the machine asked us to add a tip.
