Went there on a Monday night with 4 girlfriends for dinner and drinks. While a full restaurant is always a good sign, it also meant that what appeared to be a single waitress was painfully slow, nowhere to be seen, and/or very forgetful. One of the women dining with us had been there before in the opening weeks and had complained of outrageously poor (to the point of laughable) service and she was hoping it was due to opening kinks. However, it doesn't seem that is the case. I know hipsters are supposed to be too cool to care (listen up, Friendly Toast), but the rest of us do appreciate good customer service. Not many vegetarian options and when one of my friends and I asked if we could get the grilled cheese brisket WITHOUT the brisket, we took for granted they would give us a regular grilled cheese sandwich (it was supposed to be Gruyere!) What arrived for $12 was ONE slice of cheese (sliced deli style, not melted,) pickled relish, between two slices of TOASTED bread and 6 onion rings. The waitress didn't even bat an eye at how embarrassing a plate this was to deliver. Did the chef really feel okay sending this out of the kitchen? Other meals weren't as sparse, though none of my companions were impressed with their meals. Undeterred (and still hungry) we ordered three desserts to share among 5 of us. These were well portioned and I wanted to love the deep fried fluffernutter, but felt that it missed the mark, as well. (One reviewer wrote something about "sorry they don't deep fry everything here," but I found the opposite to be true. Besides it's hip now to deep fry unconventional foods). Maybe we went overboard on the deep fried fare because we had gotten the deep fried pickles as apps and those fell short. too. I will say the peach sangria was delicious, however between the five of us we order 8 or 9 glasses over the course of the evening and each one came out slightly different (and not in that "well, sangria is luck of the pour with the amount of fruit you get" sort of way) some had sliced fruit garnish, some did not, some we waited over 20 mins to receive, others came right up. Each time I have a hard time deciding on what to get. I think the pizza is yummy, then again, I could eat pizza for every meal. The burger is great, ham sandwich great, PIGS IN A BLANKET BOMB!! I just wish they would have more classic dishes. I really don't need quail eggs or quail meat or goats milk dressing or whatever. I would return here for beer only. They have a good beer menu. Food menu different and when it came down to it, not too much appealed to me. Wound up with brisket sandwich which was dry and salty and lacked taste. It sounded different/brisket/aspargus/fig/gruyere chesse/ but it reality it was sort of dry and heavy. Came with oninon rings which were good. Friend had the grilled ham and cheese sandwich that came with fries. She said it was good but it was the saltiest thing she had ever eaten. If you like salt, this is the place. Did not do dessert. The thought of a grilled fluffernutter made me gag after heavy salty sandwiches. Place is pretty with nice bar and seating. Waitstaff was fine but it was very non busy when we were there. We were very excited when we walked in but after eating there, don't think we will return. read more

I have been to the Local more than 10 times. It's great, if it's what you're looking for. It is unique and very different from the run-of-the-mill Southie bars. The food is generally classics that have been reinterpreted or given a slight spin. That's not for everyone. I was a huge fan of Farragut, and was there weekly. I was sad to see it go, but Local 149 makes up for it. If you would like a new casual dining experience, with a slight eclectic feel, this is the spot. If you're looking for very traditional, this is not the place. I recommend: the farmer's plate; cheeseburger; fried pickles; and they had a salmon dish for a while that was delicious. I was here again about a month ago with people from out of town. They were very impressed with the food and the selection. One member of our party had a gluten intolerance and there was food to choose from that is gluten-free. Another good experience. I love it here. Even if it's really noisy at peak times. Cheeseburger is always juicy and delicious. Grass-fed beef and good cheese, buttery roll make all the difference. Love the pickled onions and green tomatoes. Awesome fries. Fried pickles are yummy. Other dishes on menu vary seasonally and are nearly always great. Only one disappointment so far, chimichurri steak with coconut risotto. Sounds good. Wasn't. Kind of mushy risotto, not coconutty enough. Meh. Great beer selection. And when I want something stronger, Moscow mule: vodka, ginger beer, lime over crushed ice in a cold metal cup: heaven. This is a tough review. If I could rate the bar- it would be 4-5 stars. If I could just rate the food it would be 2-3 stars. I've been here 3 times now, and always sat at the bar. i've gotten something different to eat everytime and everytime wasn't very impressed- its tough to make something taste good when its shatty quality. I didn't try the food but went in with a friend for a drink. The atmosphere was really nice. There was a warm fire in the corner with comfy benches by it, and a large bar in the center where you could sit and watch the food being prepared. We were sitting right by a chef preparing different plates of meat and it was interesting to watch. The beer and wine selection was good, I only got a Lagunitas but I will probably be back to try the food since the menu had some interesting things on it. read more

Things I still enjoy: rotating menu with fresh, seasonal ingredients; amazing beer list. However, the last two times we've gone, we have not been blown away by our meals or by our service. Everything, even lighter sounding options end up being very heavy and filling--almost like you can feel your arteries clogging while you dine. I am far from a health nut, but after feeling like my generally can't kill stomach was filled with cement after two meals in a row, I'm not heading back anytime soon. I don't understand the economics of this place. I mean, it's a hospital cafeteria so I don't expect them to be looking for real profit. And it's not really expensive in an absolute sense, just somewhat expensive relative to what they give you. But they give you so little of so mediocre. Some economy of scale must be in play in terms of effort/volume and much of the building is paid for by other uses, so I can only imagine that the staff costs are disproportionately high because MGH insists on good benefits/pay for their workers. Count that as a pro or con as you will. I always end up feeling like I paid way too much money for way too little food, but it's all so strangely heavy that I end up extremely full anyway. There's a lot of regret involved. At least they carry coke products. And the fries are pretty good in that mass-produced-starch-dusted way. read more

LOVE this spot. The atmosphere is casual with a funky twist--just love the sinks in the ladies room (I truly believe that the ladies room tells you everything about a space). Let me begin by saying that we absolutely LOVED this place and can't wait to come back. The friends who brought us here were coming for their third trip in 2 weeks. That says something. I haven't seen much of Southie, so maybe it's the neighborhood or the restaurant. Either way, it was so refreshing to be in a more casual, laid back environment. The restaurant itself is very clean and well-decorated, but still casual. The décor is adorable -- chalkboard tables, colorful art pieces, comfy bar stools that are low to the ground. It's just cool. Our server was awesome -- gave great advice, was incredibly attentive, and so friendly. We started off with appetizers: the mussels and steak tartare. I've never had mussels with blue cheese before but WOW - they were SO good. Definitely try them! We basically drank the sauce. For entrées, I ordered the chicken and waffles, which was the definite MVP of the night. The honey butter is awesome, the waffle is substantial and not too thin, and the chicken was exactly what I wanted it to be. If you've never had chicken and waffles, just order it. A couple of our friends got the lamb burgers, and another friend got the pork tenderloin -- which was also really incredible. Everyone loved their meals. We can't wait to go back! read more

No lie, the best burger I've had in at least 4 years. I definitively recommend the classic cheeseburger with waffle fries and getting the pigs in a blanket as an appetizer. Great atmosphere in there too. The bartenders made conversation with my friend and I and we overall could not be more happy about stumbling into this place for lunch. read more

It breaks my heart to write this review, which is why I've been putting it off for over a year just hoping things would change but, sadly, they have not. I've been to Local 149 probably 15 times over the past 3+ years. When I first moved to the area it was the only place I wanted to go but over time I started to get really frustrated with just about everything you could possibly be frustrated with when you visit a restaurant. I'll start with the good. Local 149 is really fun and versatile; the decor is eclectic, energetic, and hip and you can sit at the bar just to watch a game, meet a few friends to have a drink, sit down and have a date night, or have brunch with the family. Their drink menu is ever changing (huge, huge, HUGE!) and they have some damn good cocktails. Their food menu changes seasonally, and they have a weekly or even daily rotation of bar snacks, apps, and specials...also huge, I'm a big fan of rotating menus if you couldn't tell. They have some fun items on the menu; I'm a huge fan of the hot wings, fried mac n' cheese balls, and definitely the spicy wings when they make a rare appearance but you honestly can't go wrong with the snacks. The bar staff is fantastic, and same goes for the hosting crew. The bad and the ugly. I first started to notice that something was awry when I would fall in love with a menu item on one night, only tell people how good it is, come back a week or two later and order that same item but not actually get the same thing. Let me elaborate, I'm a cheeseburger fanatic, not all burgers are created equal and nor should they be treated that way. I really appreciate a properly executed cheeseburger and I'm no easy critic. I think the first thing I ever order at Local 149 was a cheeseburger, it was a far cry from the best I've ever had but it was simple, tasty, and perfectly cooked. That cheeseburger was the first of many I've had at Local 149 but few would compare. The very next time I ordered a cheeseburger (always medium rare and should be on the rare side of medium if its a premium burger) it arrived fully cooked through! Not having perfectly cooked meat or more importantly perfectly cooked the way you ask for it is a tell tale sign that someone doesn't have any idea what they are doing. When your job is to cook cheeseburgers, you'd better cook it perfectly, its not that hard. This is a huge pet-peeve of mine because its usually indicative of a much larger systemic issue. I naively moved past that horribly executed burger only to face disappointment after disappointment. Local 149 made me fall in love with chicken and waffles as well, and they are also the reason I will literally never order chicken and waffles again anywhere, ever. I finally realize I wasn't crazy and put Local 149 on the back burner for about a year when I read a review of Local 149's burger on bostonburgerblog.com. Of the 100+ Boston area burgers that have been reviewed by the author only Local 149 received two scores, one low and one well above average. If you haven't yet picked up on what myself or the blogger were trying to get at it's that Local 149 shows flashes of brilliance but is consistently inconsistent. One thing I just don't understand is the lack of quality control; its not hard to look at a burger and know it's been way overcooked, that a waffle is cooked to the consistency of a piece of cardboard, or that a sandwich had been sitting on the heat counter way too long and the bun is destroyed with grease. These are issues I encountered far to often, and I just got tired of wasting my money. The only other thing I will note is that the servers are not quite up to par with the bar or hosting staff... not really sure what the disconnect is there but it's a stark difference. Anyway... after a year break from the restaurant I was once infatuated with I decided to give it another go, unfortunately I have to say I'm jumping ship for good...farewell old friend. I'm never the type of person who is going to send back an overcooked burger, I might eat it, I might not but I'm not going to send it back. I've always been a bit of a martyr and although I realize I'm an insignificant part of Local 149's customer base I would prefer to punish them by no longer giving them my business or recommending the restaurant to people I know instead of making a stink about a cold burger with a soggy bun. Stopped in Sunday 4-17-11. Place looked nice but it went downhill from there. Waitress was very friendly but was clueless regarding the food and beer menu and bartender was much better. Took three tries to find a beer that was actually in stock then had to wait another 10 minutes while he hooked it up to the tap. Prices were high and both food and beer offerings were hodge podge. Seems like they put little or no thought into their offerings.More like 20 people tossed random food and beer suggestions into a hat and they went with luck of the draw. Would be nice to hace a decent beer bar in Southie but I'm afraid this won't be it. read more

I was a Farragut House regular so I was really upset when they were sold. But, I have to admit Local 149 has won me over especially since they have changed their hours and now open for lunch. I would like to start by saying that I am not the type of person to write yelp reviews or anything like that, but this place was so awful that I had to. This restaurant is the last place on earth I would go. McDonalds has better service and nicer employees. I have been to Local three times now and each time it is worse and worse. First of all, the food is way over priced and the portions are tiny. I ordered an appetizer of "avocado skins" (I guess their take on potatoe skins) to share with my two friends. We got one half of an avocado, a piece of broccoli, and a messy plate. This was all after our waitress took cell phone breaks in between speaking with us and putting our food orders in. I would understand it taking a while if it was a busy but there were about 4 waitresses on and three other tables eating. Aside from the food being expensive and unfulfilling, the manager was a complete bitch. I hate using terms like that but all she did was yell at her employees, roll her eyes at customers, and snap at the hostess. I would be absolutely miserable working there; it's no wonder the waitresses could careless. Overall, it just seems like a restaurant trying to be classy and fancy in southie. They need to get real. The Farragut House was perfect for locals of all ages. This is nothing but a place for yuppies to eat because they think they're classy. read more

The food wasn't all that great. Today I decided to be spontaneous. I ordered through ubereats. By the time the food got to be me it was still hot. As if I was sitting at the restaurant myself, waiting for the waiter/ress to bring the food to my table. I had huevos rancheros and the lobster mcmuffin. Let's start of by saying good in portion size, but horrible quality. The the beans in the huevos rancheros were too much and too salty. The lobster mcmuffin with scrambled eggs was very bland, and extremely dry so were the home fries, the cheese wasn't melted thoroughly on the english muffin. We visited the Local for the first time last Saturday evening. While the place looked quite crowded we were immediately shown to a table for two. The setting is pleasant but a little intimate (tight). Our young waitress had a little difficulty with "J&B and water" so I eventually said to just make it "Dewars", so I received a glass with a few fingers of Scotch in the bottom. Bemused, I sent it back for some water and ice...The young lady was obviously learning, and service was otherwise just fine. The menu is somewhat original. I did find a hamburger which was quite tasty, while my significant other had the gnocchi which she remarked as delicious. All-in-all a good experience, and we will return a less crowded time. read more

Used to be my favorite place in Southie but in the last few months it has gone way down hill. While they have an amazing beer selection, they have underserved me on numerous occasions. I got a Stout recently and the bartender served it to me in a 10 ounce glass. When I asked why he served a 4.8% ABV beer in such a small glass he gave me a huge attitude saying "I don't know," and walked away. At 10 bucks for a beer that costs 5 anywhere else, it should be served in a PINT glass. This has happened to not only myself but a number of friends as well recently. Their portions are also small and over priced for what you get. This used to be my go-to for food and craft beers but I think you get more bang for your buck down the road at Lincoln. read more

It seems like Local 149 is taking advantage of the neighborhood as the only local bar within 5-10 blocks, so prices are pretty steep. I mean three mac and cheese fritters were $7. Disappointed... The other write ups let me down this time. In town on business i tried by picking up and taking back to the hotel. Well, it wasn't that good and it was such a small portion that i ended up eating potato chips in the room as i was still so hungary. All for the low, low, rediculous price of twenty three for my seafood risotto. Yes, my, seemingly, dyed yellow risotto. Even the seafood was all yellow - not sure why. I ate it anyway hoping it would taste better than it looked - it didn't - marginal at best. I told them was talking back to hotel. They did include plastic ware, but that's it - no bread, not even a cracker- just my rice. Rip off. That's my take on it. read more

Started off my meal being an extremely annoying patron... hadn't heard of the liquor in the bloody mary and asked if it was gluten-free. Our server, Natalie, wasn't sure so she asked the bartender who also wasn't sure. Instead of coming back and saying, "I don't know," and waiting for me to order something else (which is the norm with GF requests), she apologized and said that the bartender recommended a bloody maria instead. It was delicious. I upped the pain-in-the-ass-customer ante by asking if I could order something else off the menu- poached eggs with hollandaise, bacon and hash browns (GF people, these are real potatoes, not fried!). Natalie once again acted like it was absolutely no big deal and my meal was incredible. Friends said the fritatta and pancakes were as well. We go to Local 149 about once per week and will probably continue to because we LOVE the food and atmosphere. The one star is for the HORRIBLE SERVICE. I have yet to see the same staff there for more than one month. The bar tenders don't even look at you for about 10 minutes and they are ALL SO RUDE (except one girl who no longer works there), you ask a question and they immediately walk away. They tell you the kitchen is closed at 11PM, yet when you order at 10PM they act totally inconvenienced. PLEASE HIRE EXPERIENCED BAR TENDERS. read more

Local 149 quietly opened a week or so ago. This much anticipated Southie food shop falls very short of its anticipated mark. The décor is shabby chic industrial. The renovations produced a far more open and airy restaurant than the old Farragut house. The wall display of seltzer bottles adds some color. The bar itself has changed little with the exception of new seating, that is comfortable although fixed to the floor. The chalk board behind the bar meant to display the snack menu is completely invisible and most patrons do not know it is there. The dining areas are slightly roomier than the previous place with tables fashioned from old work benches etc. The high top chairs are uncomfortable and not conducive to "dinning". These high school shop class stools are flimsy and slide around on the new tile floor creating a sense of danger and impending doom. They did not have a child's chair so be prepared to haul your own from home. The music is so loud it may permanently damage your child's hearing and absolutely doesn't allow for conversation. The menu is cleverly written with engineering terms as headings but is extremely over priced for what you are supplied on the plate. Under appetizers (Schematics) there are some interesting sounding offerings. Fried Brussels sprouts arrived hot in a copper pencil cup. The breading was under seasoned and quite gritty but was perked up with the "homemade" dipping sauces that made this offbeat dish eatable. The beet salad had over cooked eggs and mint leaves which needed to be chopped, but overall had balanced flavors. Entrée's arrived sporadically at about 5 minute intervals. The children's menu dishes arrived with the entrée's. Most well run establishments send the children's dishes with the appetizers. Both were hot and enjoyed by the children. Both were overpriced for what was received. Too many french fries with little to no protein, seven tiny rock shrimp or three chicken tenders is simply not worth 7 or 8 dollars. The entrée plates are entirely too large for the table size. The salmon was nothing special and slightly over cooked the accompanying lentils were flavorful and properly cooked. The supposedly fantastic signature dish of chicken and waffles was less than stellar. The chicken had nice flavor but was quite dry and the waffles although touted as homemade tasted like Bisquick and were bone dry. If this southern classic is what you crave, go to "The Hen House" on Mass. Ave. The lamb sausage and chop entree came to the table much later than the other five entrée's with a woefully under seasoned and under cooked sausage. The Lamb chops themselves were also undercooked and the glaze lacked any imagination. This dish also arrived with large parchment bag giving the diner a sense of anticipation only to be completely disappointed to find a small piece of soggy (Stop and Shop style) baguette with "garlic butter" almost completely devoid of flavor, causing the eater to sop up the stingy amount of sauce on the plate with parchment and wipe his mouth with the bread. It also had white bean cassoulet which was more like "cassou-let-down. Other entrée's included rubbery flavorless pork chop with passable spaetzel. Or a very small portion of short ribs were tasty but on a pool of watery root vegetable mash which needed salt. The Charcuterie offerings were nice and presented on yet another over sized platter. This attests to the chef's ability to purchase premade food and a lack of ability or imagination for actually cooking and plating of meals. Desserts: the Carmel salted ice-cream was very nice but accompanied by a piece of chocolate torte so dense and stale that it took two diners to cut into it. The fried fluffernutter promised to be interesting but flopped in its execution with a soggy coating that tasted like french fries and the interior a separated glob of gelatinous muck...bleurgh! Why do restaurants serving fried anything for desert (Twinkies, churros, etc.) fry in the same oil? Desserts and fried fish are flavors that do not mix. Wake-up, kitchen people. Both desserts were again, presented on a plate far too large for the table, adding to the overall impression of small over priced portions. Overall service was barely acceptable, very courteous but lacked any sense of urgency, continuity or professionalism. Bottom line, for a presumably experienced restaurateur, this place is overpriced and missed the mark on too many basics to be worth it. There is a good beer selection and an attentive bar staff (although we did have to send back a mixed drink), so don't bother making the trip to Southie for this, stick with your "local" neighborhood favorite. read more

Went for brunch on a Sunday. Wasn't really that busy. It all started with the Bloody Mary. Now I am a big Bloody Mary man. I wouldn't ever recommend this one. The overwhelming taste of vinegar is wow. I even asked for another one. Maybe I got a bad batch or it wasn't shaken enough from the Bloody Mary bottle. Acid reflex here I come. Then I had to actually in the course of the brunch get up from my seat 4 times to either correct something or retrieve something as the salt and pepper. Or even sugar. Now that was just the beginning. Got my very simple eggs bacon sausage home fries. #1 the eggs where we'll done #2. The breakfast was cold. Lol. The worst part of it is that they give you these 2 pieces of waffle. Now have ever been to these hotels on route 95 south going to Florida and they offer continental breakfast and they have this shitty waffle machine batter that you can make a waffle for your self.
