I was sad to see Farragut House go but gave Local a try. We came here about a month or so after it opened for dinner. Waited about an hr and half for dinner. Once seated it was all downhill. My husband ordered steak tips - the waitress convinced him he should try the short ribs bc they "are better". OK he says, and gets the short ribs. My friend ordered the special (I think it was some sort of pasta w/ lobster in it) and I got pulled pork or ribs - can't remember and I don't think it is on the menu any longer. After waiting a ridiculous amount of time for our food it came out and we were less than impressed. My husband's short ribs were not exactly comparable to steak tips and was not at all what he was craving. It was more like a stew type meat. My friends special was cold when he got it. 10 minutes later when we finally saw our waitress she was convincing the table next to us to get the special and asked my friend for a recommendation - to which he responded it wasn't that good and it was cold. My husband went to use the restroom and sliced his finger on the metal on the door. After flagging down a staff member to get some first aid supplies he was told "oh yea, we need to fix that". I did try it again for brunch and had a much better experience, although we were the only people in the place! But then my husband went for brunch and had another bad experience. All and all - I may be back for a drink but probably wouldn't waste my time or money on dinner. read more

I love Local 149 and go there all the time. The food is always on par and the drinks are always really good. I didnt give it 5 stars though. There is a bar tender that is fairly new that really needs a pep talk. We went in around 2:30 on a Sunday and waited about 15 minutes before he even acknowledged us. You could clearly tell he did not want to be there. We went back a few nights later and same thing. It was a pretty packed bar and he kept going back to look at his phone while a bunch of patrons were waiting for him to serve us. I literally JUST left Local 149. I came here to celebrate with my husband today. We came over to southie from the south end bc a friend recommended this place. The food: was good. Not GREAT. But good. The portions: way too small- I legit had 4 small slices of pork tenderloin on top of some purée. Needless to say I'm still hungry. The service: this was the absolute worst part of the night. I called to make a reservation and was told there were no available reservations and when I said ok bye the girl miraculously had a reservation available. (This should have been my first clue).. The waiter was a tall guy- maybe 23. He only answered my questions with one word responses if we got a response at all. He refilled our water only once after we had set with empty glasses for a while. He was the most unfriendly person I have encountered at a high end restaurant. Until the group of girls came in and sat next to us. He then was the life of the party. He was fist bumping and sitting at their table while chatting and flirting. But my table got NON of the charm. My husband wasn't asked how he would like his meat cooked and when It came out rare and we asked for the meat to be cooked longer the waiter gave no response and yanked the plate from the table. We were going to stay and have several drinks and play trivia- but I honestly couldn't wait to get out of there. Maybe if I had tits he would have been friendlier. I found a large piece of glass in my drink and, even worse, I did not realize it until I almost swallowed it. When I spit it out to discover it was a large piece of glass, I notified the waitress who was appropriately horrified and apologetic. She said she notified the manager and he would be right over. Several minutes later (and after the waitress told me she notified him again), the manager casually strolled to our table as though we were bothering him. With an attitude of "how can I get out of this," he agreed to comp only one drink: the one with glass in it. I do not even think of this place as an option anymore. read more

I live only a few hundred steps away so I would love to love this place, but i have had it. tonite's dinner was real simple, my wife ordered their soup special which was a tomato soup. she described it as very tasty but cold. we sent it back and a new one came out hot. how can soup come out cold? I guess if its made way earlier and dished out as needed and microwaved for too short a period of time. the second bowl came out quite hot. ahhh, a minute or two longer in the microwave. we then ordered their special thursday mushroom pizza. let me describe it-baaaad. i couldn't really eat it. my wife didn't enjoy it either. i could have had much better from a frozen pizza. this is partially my fault. we use to eat at the 149 faithfully. the last three times have been as bad as tonite's. well three times and you strikeout. Me and a group of friends made reservations for this restaurant last night. she made these reservations in advance so when we got there it would be no issue for sitting. got there the restaurant was packed and the table was not ready what so ever bad start already. We were a group of seven and the hostess short Hispanic man kept trying to put us at tables that he knew we couldn't sit at Or fit comfortably. So about after 20 to 25 minutes we finally get a table that's decent enough for all of us to sit. Server finally walked over to us doesn't greet her self or show any form of customer service pours water in her glasses and poured it on the table and in some of our laps. She walks over with plates and utensils and we instantly look at the plates and noticed that there was leftover food still on them.So I took the initiative and handed her the plates back all the plates that had food on them I put them on top so she can see clear as day why I handed her these plates back.She took the plates back with no problem.A couple minutes later that same hostess the short Hispanic guy walks over to me and says that I threw the plates at the server and she doesn't feel comfortable serving me anymore.Me and all of my other friends look at this man in confusion like what the fuck are you talking about she put dirty plates on the table. So after I explained everything to this man she walks back over and it's very clear that she was crying so now everything is super awkward. As she's taking orders she goes around and ask everybody what they want to eat and drink and skipped right over me every time. I don't know if it was a race thing or what but that was one of the most weirdest strangest situations I've ever been in and they didn't seem to understand the policy of the customer comes first. Local 149 has taken a serious tumble since t first opened. If you are headed to the bar and just looking to grab a few drinks you are in good shape. If your plan is to to sit and have a formal meal all bets are off. The waitstaff is nice, but they are clearly overwhelmed which is likely because they are understaffed. The hostesses stand around on their phones. We ordered a $12 grilled cheese. The first one was extremely burnt and cheese was somehow not melted. The second try was just as bad. They removed that item from the bill, but the experience was negative. Beware that you are definitely overpaying for what you receive. read more

Loud and proud, raising the bar on bar food in Southie. Coming from Cambridge, this is one of the noisiest places ever to deafen my ears, and I grew up in NYC. It's essentially a huge bar surrounded by some tables and couches/reclining areas. Beer list dwarfs everything else. Ex frat boys and sorority girls will weep with nostalgia here. They even have the scary-looking (but actually nice) guy carding at the door. Friendly attentive service is almost Southern...call it Southie. We came for the signature chicken and waffles (Boston magazine said it's one of the two best in the city). I've had this dish all over, including a place that helped popularize it among "yankees": Melba's in Harlem, NY. Local 149 does a good job with it (as good or better than Melba's), using a tangy cranberry sauce which adds another ingredient to this mishmash of a dish. Allston Diner's is still better, imo. Better options include the cider braised short rib on a bed of (killer) hashed brown potatoes. The Local Cheeseburger was among the better gourmet burgers in Boston: not quite transcendent, but then no burger really is. Avoid a spicy chicken wing appetizer that was so-so, way too artificially smoky. Mac & cheese was pedestrian as well (rarely does this dish rise above the norm). Instead, go for the hog wings app...generous drumsticks of tender/crisp pork. The BBQ pork cheek tacos were good, but don't pretend you can tell the difference with cheek meat. Definitely would return...but go at a quieter hour, unless you long for those frat party days. read more

I have mixed feelings about this place. I was truly bummed when I decided to make a visit to the Farragut House and to my surprise found that it had been replaced by another restaurant. This is what I found to be the case: First the good-I can't complain about the decor and atmosphere. The interior style of it is interesting, almost an industrial feel to it with alot of natural light and big windows, exposed beams and ductwork. Decent selection of draft and bottle beers as well as wine. unfortunately....that's all I have to say about the good. Now the bad-this restaurant really sticks out like a sore thumb in the kind of neighbor it's in. It's a great contrast to the Farragut that use to serve up Irish comfort food and was a retreat that captured the feel of the local charm of Southie. Local 149 does anything but that. It's offers a sharp, unique and artfully coordinated menu that is best suited for Newbury St than in the middle of South Boston: serving up such fare as quail eggs and other delicacies that you'd expect to see on a French cooking show. I can appreciate artful culinary creations, but sometimes you just want a simple sandwich. And the dishes are a tad overpriced. We got the cheese and meat plate...$20. I thought that was a little steep for only 1-2oz of prociutto and salami and about 1-2 tbsp of cheese. On top of that, there is an extremely limited menu before 5:30. And I mean extremely limited. Im indifferent about the waitstaff...I can't complain about the service I received. They were pleasant. Overall, it had a very stiff and cold feel. Menu is mediocre but this place would be best appreciated by a Newbury St clientele and not the location it's in. Good beer selection, interesting decor. I'm on the fence about this place-It's definitely a place that is for some people, but not everyone. The food here is good and the prices are great. Decent bar etc. But, the service is far from the best. During one of the Patriot's playoff games I came in with a friend with the hopes of getting a table near a TV. There were several open tables and one next to the TV I wanted. I was told because we didn't have four people to sit at the hightop we could not have the table. I couldn't believe it! This was THE only bar in southie that didn't have a line and was less than half full and they are denying me a table...really?!?!?!? I ended up leaving and haven't been back since. read more

A fantastic addition to a this changing southie neighborhood. Cozy, warm, romantic, laid back and overall delicious. An impressive draught and beer on tap selection, and an even more impressive food menu; and both exceed their expectations. The tuna burger is my favorite food item, but I've also tried the calamari, the beet salad, the french onion soup, the mac and cheese fritters, the chicken pot pie - ALL amazing! And you just can't beat the price. Ive been here with friends, on dates, and with my parents, and it was the perfect atmosphere for these different outings. I've been here twice and had 2 vastly different experiences, hence meeting in the middle with 3 stars. On a Sunday morning for breakfast, this place was great. They have a massive lobster breakfast sandwich that's really, really good, and the service was pretty fast and good overall. But on a Friday after work, not only was it so crowded that there was nowhere to stand without feeling completely in the way, but I had to send my food back to the kitchen twice. I ordered a tuna burger: the first time, the waitress came out with a beef burger; the second time, she came out with a completely raw ground tuna burger. It might have made sense if it were a piece of sashimi-style tuna, but it was, like, mashed up tuna molded into a patty shape and placed--cold--between a bun. I sent it back again; they cooked it more; and they were really apologetic and removed it from the bill. On the upside, they have great bloody marys. read more

My friend and I went to the restaurant last nite. We walked in and saw open seats at the bar. The hostess told us that the seats were reserved for people ordering dinner. We told her that we were planning on ordering food, then she told us they were reserved and we couldn't sit there. Very confusing. After wating for a table, we were looking at the menu and waiting for our drinks. We started talking to a woman who had just finished her meal. She did not have a positive review of the restaurant. The waitress came over after the woman left and asked us if we knew the woman and if she was bothering us (very strange-). The music (blaring 70's music-it wasn't good in the 70's and it isn't any better almost 40 years later) was too loud to have a conversation and was not conducive to enjoying dinner. i ordered the fried caesar salad: it was saturated with a garlic dressing that was too strong. We tried it for the first time tonight hoping to find another good place to eat in Southie that we can walk to. The selection on Broadway is ok, but not too varied, so we were looking for something different. The menu is definitely different and creative, but maybe too creative for the cooks. I had the brisket grilled cheese sandwich, which was pretty good except that there were bites where the meat was nothing but a mouthful of fat. I opened it and trimmed the fat and then the flavor was quite good, though one side of the grilled sandwich was burnt. The onion rings were delicious. My husband ordered the cheeseburger and fries. He ordered it medium-well, it came medium-rare to rare, so the cooks, taking no chances, cooked it to a crisp when he sent it back. The fries might as well have been potato chips, they were so overcooked. The waitress was sympathetic, apologetic and sweet, and his final thought was that at least they couldn't ruin the beer, and the crowd was pretty groovy. Oh, one last note, my husband was absolutely disgusted with the guy at the bar slicing meat with bare hands, eating pieces as he went, obviously putting saliva back onto the meat he was still slicing into his hand. But heck, at least the 60's weren't lost on his bandanna. We're willing to give it a second chance, the chicken and waffles looked good, so maybe next time? read more

I live around the corner and recall the days of the Farragut House. But honesty, was very excited to see something new and more indicative of the new neighborhood take its place. I've been 3 or 4 times and have enjoyed the food, but the experience really comes down to the service. The waitstaff (and bartenders in particular) seem to be more comfortable with couples -- much attention, rather than female diners on their own -- no attention at all. I've been with and without a partner to notice the difference. Where does the discomfort come from? This is Boston after all, no? I've enjoyed the seafood pasta, the lemon garlic chicken and the tuna burger. But if you're on your own and sitting at the bar, don't expect to be checked on, and certainly not "how was your meal". Just leave your credit card in the glass and be on your way.... some acknowledgement and appreciation would go a long way. read more

I was really looking forward to trying this restaurant but was sadly underwhelmed. We got there at 4:00 because we had had a hectic day and missed lunch. Online the menu says that's when dinner starts, but when we got there we has to wait until 4:30. We ordered bar food as an appetizer until then and the food was good, but took a looong time to get to us...like 30 minutes. We then ordered the Farmer's Plate and the Chicken with Waffles. Nothing on the menu suggested that the Farmer's plate would come with nuts. Candied walnuts are easily avoided, but the bread had nuts in it too. We asked for replacement bread, which took another while, and then I spoke with the manager about marking their menu. They don't even have the "please inform your server of any nut allergens" message on the menu. Not only did the manager not take our concern seriously, "we'll change it when we reprint the menus" but she offered no apology for the problem. We don't expect much, but she didn't offer to comp anything. My husband is the one allergic to nuts, and he isn't deathly allergic to walnuts, but the bread made his mouth go numb within one slice! My chicken was tasty, but I really couldn't enjoy it because I was to concerned about my husband. I don't know if I'll try it again someday. The food, service, and atmosphere weren't in par with other restaurants in South End or even Dorchester that the owners were obviously trying to replicate. Southie is not exactly loaded with high quality food/service options. Local is an exception. The food is tremendous and the beer list makes it unique. On top of that, the service is excellent. The manager even remembered my Dad and I from the last time we were in, and helped us get the best seat in the house for the bruins game. The service at Local 149 feels resentful of our presence as customers rather than grateful for our patronage when there are many competitors in the neighborhood. We tend to sit at the bar, and I don't need staff to go above and beyond. But when someone in our party couldn't eat the old, cold fish tacos you served, and you won't hear his feedback about the quality of the food, I wonder why you work in customer service at all. And when your server shoves a plate of food in front of us so that the sauce spills all over the bar, then rushes away without noticing, I wonder why that person is so neglectful of the customer experience. Then when the bartender returns to clear our plates, and she rolls her eyes as if we made a mess that creates a big problem for her to clean up, it's hard to imagine how she gets by in a job that is 100% customer facing. Between the poor food quality and entitled service across the board, I realize the problems must come from the leadership and trickle down to affect every aspect of the experience at Local149. Until I hear that it's under new management I will not return. read more

When I heard about the local 149 in South Boston, I thought that it was owned by the same owners of the local in west newton. However, it was obviously not owned by the same owners. The food, atmosphere, and prices did not compare to those of the local in west newton. I went here on there "soft open" and sat at there bar...good cheese plate minus the stale bread and the bartender was great. Second time around went in and it was HORRIBLE!!!!! Walked in and the hostess was telling us we could not sit at a bar high top because it was for dinner (though we were eating dinner and informed her of that). She sat us at the bar...where we were served by a waitress...that's right, not the bartenders (all of 5 who were behind the bar and staring at us) but instead we had to wait 10 minutes for a waitress to come up to us sitting at a bar and she was suppose to serve us...so weird right!?! My fiance went up to the hostess stand and explained that we wanted a bar atmosphere and to have a bite to eat at the bar...one of the hostess was not understanding us at all and making the entire situation frustrating...finally another hostess who understood came up to us and politely moved us to a bar top. At the bar top we had THE WORST server...she acted as though she wanted to be anywhere but at our table or the restaurant and she seemed so annoyed with the local patrons that were coming into the restaurant/bar. I got the patty melt...soggy bread and french fries....followed by bland flavors...not to mention the prices are ridiculous for what you get. I then saw a manager walking around to the "locals" asking for constructive criticism...which when they gave it to him...he was trying to defend the restaurant's methods instead of apologizing and listening (and they did have valid complaints/ criticism) It seems Local 149 did not research what their demographics are and instead decided to force a restaurant that belongs in the South End onto a Southie neighborhood whose majority want simple but good food and instead have received over priced food that is trying to be different but has only succeeding in epically falling. LOCAL 149....genuinely take an interest in what food the patrons you are serving want because the impression you are giving us so far is different from that. read more

after being open for a few weeks, I had hoped most of the major kinks would be worked out, and for the most part they have. What you cant fix is generally uninspired food that lacks any value. Prices are wickedly expensive for what you get. While the quality of the raw product might be high, the execution ruins it!!! Service on the floor is hit or miss. The bar service is good though. Nice selection of beers. Come for a few drinks, skip the the food. Besides, the music is way too loud. You may need to have your hearing checked after any extended period of time. So here is my guide on how you should proceed with entering this delectable eatery: First, start playing the song 'Stayin' Alive' by the Bee Gees (it helps with momentum) next grab a Styrofoam tray (They charge extra for the paper ones in order to prevent people from saving the environment). Next head to the salad bar. Load up on your favorite salad stuff from local farms. DO NOT! REPEAT DO NOT GET A LID FOR YOUR SALAD. The lid will had more weight thus increasing the price of your custom local grown salad. Your next move from here is to check out to the soup situation. People tend to go for the soup, it's a hot ticket item. However, be weary!!! The soups are made by retired oompa loompas who don't know how to make soup properly. There is only a finite number of 'good stuff' the rest is broth and people tend to only snag the 'good stuff' just leaving broth behind. After choosing your soup note the signs above about the prices of soup. One soup is 2.00USD the other is 2.70USD. Regardless of what soup you get always tell them you have the 2.00USD one. ;) Now I'm a soup and salad guy so I usually stop right here and head over to the checkout section. Most days you have two options one is the Hawaiian cleaning lady who looks like Smokey Robinson and the other is wait is that Ke$ha?? Nope! It's a retired dock worker from 1812. Stopped in for some drinks. Great beer list; cocktail list looked good too. I appreciate the permanent bar seats that help keep the area spaced well. On previous occasions, I've tried some of the bar bites, and they have always been good. Was a little discerning to be swatting fruit flies away from the drinks, especially in the middle of winter. This review is strictly based on the service received on 5/28/17. Myself and two friends came in mid-afternoon on Sunday for drinks/food. The restaurant was pretty dead with the exception of one other table and a few people at the bar. We initially went to the bar but for comfort decided to sit at a table instead. We asked the hostess if we could sit at a table by the window and she said she would ask? She went to where the waitress was standing by the kitchen and we could very clearly, heard the waitress say "no, I'm not dealing with that today." Still not sure what "that" she is referring to? It was incredibly rude and I have never been refused service before. The hostess came back over to us and said we could sit at the high top, but we would have to serve ourselves. Was here on a Thursday night and I'm not sure if it was the Bruins game, March Madness, or the fact that it's a new place, but it was packed!! It took a few (5 minutes) to get a beer and conversation was a little tough because of the noise level (patrons, not music) but when we actually got to sit down, we had a great experience. If I lived in the neighborhood I would definitely become a regular. If the bar wasn't right in the middle of the restaurant, this place would be considered more of a brasserie, which is fitting for the style of food and the number of brews on tap. Everything we ate was delicious and my husband said he had "the best pork chop of his life". We also had the farmers plate (the blue cheese was AMAZING) which has bread brought up from the Cape. The beet salad was super fresh and yummy, the caesar salad was crisp and creamy (tofu croutons!!!), and my tuna burger was scrumptious (I loved that it was raw in the middle). Our bartender was friendly and very knowledgeable (food and beverage). I can't speak for others, but we had a great time and will surely be back. read more

We enjoyed our first visit to this restaurant. The food was very tasty and could be described as creative bar fare. We had two 'bar bites', the lobster rangoons and the mushroom caps which were good. The "badass" salad had more than 'garden variety' components and my yellowfin tuna burger was delicious. The acorn squash 'entree' (I don't think the menu has an official entree section but this seemed to be a veggie main course) fell a bit short for us; maybe because we presumed the accompanying "greens" would be of a winter variety rather than watercress, or, maybe we wished there was a bit of something else (maybe a grain?) of a more seasonal nature. We shared the brownie sundae for dessert and it was scrumptious. Our server, Joan, was great. I couldn't read a separate, small menu of cheeses and meats as the black print blended with the blue paper in dim light (yes, I had my reading glasses). The room is arranged with a circular bar in the middle (lots of TV's for the next "big" game) and with slightly, lower, and higher, seating sections. I think the lower area has 'hightop' tables and the 'upper' section has semi-circular banquettes and 'regular' height tables. The banquettes would be my preference for a party of 3-5. The decor includes wood from some newer blond wallboard to floorboards that look like they may have been salvaged from the Farragut House restaurant which occupied this site for decades. Myself and my girlfriend came in during their soft opening. When attending soft openings, one always enters with the understanding that they just opened and there will be some kinks. Well when I left I realized I entered with the wrong mindset. This place is AMAZING! The service was incredible, and the food was amazing. We started with the waffle fries, they melted in my mouth. We then went to share the ceasar salad, it was amazing and even had fried mozzarella on it! I then went on to have the pork belly as an entree and my girlfriend had the seafood scampi. Oh my was it good. The seafood scampi had every great seafood you could think of including a lobster tail!!! All in all this place is a great addition to Southie. I really enjoyed my brunch at Local 149. The atmosphere is great especially if you sit by the fire place. The service was a bit slow the last time I went but we weren't in a rush so it was fine. They definitely have great options and prices for brunch drinks and food. I look forward to visiting again! read more
