Such a unique spot for swing dancing and late night jazz in SF! I love that the local swing dancing community has a strong presence here and that this spot is enjoyed by both experienced dancers and beginners alike! Although beware-- the line gets super long past 8 or 9 pm. We made a reservation ahead of time and received a text notification that our table was ready upon arrival, however when we checked in with the host they told us that no tables were available and that they were working to clear them out. It seemed like at least 5-8 other parties ahead of us were also experiencing the same issue. We decided to grab drinks at the bar while waiting, and danced in the meantime. We did not receive another update from the host that our table was ready until about 2.5 hours later, at which point we had already finished dancing and were ready to leave. Long story short, for a good time I'd recommend just coming for dancing and standing room near the bar-- the waitlist/reservation system for tables just doesn't seem worthwhile. read more

One of my favorite bars in the city! Immediately when you walk in, you notice the unique interior decor of typewriters and newspapers and lots of seating with booths and high tables. There's dim lighting which adds to the whole ambiance. The showstopper for me was the live band though; I love any live music and Local Edition always has the best musicians who play songs that are lively but not too intense, which fits my ideal music preferences for a night out. When I went, there was amazing jazz and it set the mood perfectly. There's a large variety of drinks (the rosebud cocktail was so good and had just the right amount of sweetness) and the menu is super fun and creative (basically a mini newspaper with all the fonts and writing too!). WOW... that was the entertainment they had on a Saturday night, and also the feeling I got when I entered the venue! WOW is the current Saturday night series by "Motown on Mondays", and omg, the DJ and musicians who performed this past weekend were amazing, and made for a very enjoyable night. A unique mix of music including songs like Stand by Me and Just the Two of Us, were accompanied by sounds of the conga, saxophone, tambourine, and cowbell. My boyfriend and I absolutely loved the venue, so much space inside (plenty of tables and seating, first come first served), quirky decor (suitcases, newspapers, and lots of typewriters), dim lighting, great ambience, ideal for date night (or an outing with anyone really). And the service was pretty great as well. They have staff walking around bussing tables frequently, plenty of bartenders ready to help you at the bar (no long waits), and really delicious and good quality of drinks. My favorite cocktail was the Brass Check, a bit fruity and tangy, a good balance of flavors and alcohol. Such a great setting and the fact that they do live music here regularly, this is definitely my kinda spot. Can't wait to return! read more

Husband was visiting here, having a perfectly fine time until his medical condition caused him to almost pass out. He needed to lay down for a moment to keep from fainting. Somebody came to kick out the group because they thought he was trying to sleep there. He tried to explain about his medical condition, that he was not sleeping there, and that he would be standing again in just a few minutes, but they didn't care and asked everyone to leave. My fiance has been talking about this bar that's located under Market Street forever and we finally went last week! We went on a Friday night and were able to find free parking nearby easily. We were able to get a table right away as the place was not too busy. I ordered a margarita and my fiance an espresso martini. Both cocktails were delicious especially the espresso martini, so much that I ordered another one. We loved the live music, the band was fantastic and it was not too loud. First time I came here was 6 months back with a Group of friends and it was such a fun night. There wasn't any band playing that night, but we had our own space and we really enjoyed the drinks. The service was also very quick. My second visit here was few days back on a Thursday night and it did feel like a Saturday. I absolutely love the cocktails here, my top 5 in SF. I ordered the Ava Gardner and my husband got Brass Check, both cocktails had a great flavour and were also very strong. The local edition is the most unique club in San Francisco in my humble opinion. The place is located at the basement of famed Hearst Newspaper Building that is now closed! The doorman was pretty cool. He told us that the club only serves liquor, cocktails and other alcoholic beverages but no food. It didn't deter us a bit since we had one of the better dining experience before we tried a nearby club. The dance floor was perfect for the two couples to dance, and the band was an old ragtag horn section with Tuba, piano and three main men for trumpet, trombone and clarinet. There was one person for Banjo. The bartenders were superb and they charged $19 each. Overall the experience was fantastic. I'm so pleased to have experienced the old style band music and got to have some of the best high quality cocktails. I strongly recommend you try it when you're in SF. read more

Really love the ambiance of this place. Apparently, this place used to be a local newspaper company. In order to get here, you have to go downstairs where you walk through a newspaper postings exhibit with current posts from the SF Chronicle. From there, you enter the lounge area where they have a stage for live musicians, red curtains hanging on the walls, and typewriters on display. Makes you feel like being transported to another era. Nice variety of cocktail drinks, but if those don't suit your fancy, the bartenders dressed in suspenders are able to make any drink you'd like. One of our members tried ordering a drink that was no longer on the menu and the bartender was able to recreate it for her. Come here to enjoy the ambiance, the live music, and the drinks! read more

Went here last night for a nice night out with my partner since going into the city is such a treat for us at this point . Easy to find and right off the bart if you're traveling from the east bay. It was our first time here so I was pleasantly surprised they had great cocktails & a really nice venue in general. Music was decent but not what I was expecting. However, the service was not the best. We were barely helped and often ignored. We noticed the folks around us ordered at least twice before we were even asked if we wanted anything else. Lastly, I'm not going to blame this place for what happened but I do think there was a level of unpreparedness on this business' end. There was a large party that attended on 1/18 and somehow managed to infiltrate into other people's space, grabbing chairs and moving around tables without asking. The staff seemed to notice and I initially thought they were telling them they couldn't do that but instead seemed to be accommodating all of their requests. While I understand the need to accommodate the customer, these folks were rude & one of them even shoved their belongings into me as if I didn't exist & another guest nearly sat in my lap. This party was large enough, in my opinion, to constitute a private party rental of some sort. I noticed other guests were uncomfortable by them too and physically getting up to move away from them. We were so uncomfortable and felt pretty neglected that we left after the bands first 15 minute intermission. I don't know if I'd come back for their cocktails alone but we had an okay time up until the group ruined our night. read more

Local Edition is of my favorite bars/speakeasies in San Francisco. I use to frequent this bar before the pandemic and would love to show my friends this cool spot. If you're a lover of jazz, they have live bands that play quite frequently (you can check the calendar online). I came back from New York recently and hearing the live jazz in this intimate setting brought me back to the big apple. Their drinks are also quite tasty and I got a good buzz from their signature cocktails. I recommend booking a reservation online to get good seats, but walk-ins are welcome as well. I am a sucker for live music and they had a live jazz band that playing even on a Monday night which is hard to find in San Diego. It was bar service which was fine since it wasn't too busy. I came with my friends for one of my buddy's birthday and this place was one of several stops of our bar crawling night. We had a fairly large group and weren't able to sit directly inside where we can watch the performers, but the people at Local were kind enough to accommodate us on the outside. The experience was still very cool, there were old school newspaper articles behind glass display cases that I wasn't so sure if they were real or not but it added to the general theme of the speakeasy. One of my favorite spots in the city! For COVID safety purposes, staff/patrons must wear masks, and proof of vaccination is required. Seating is limited... Expect to be hovering around tables in hopes of an open spot. The jazz music's humming softly enough to add some atmospheric flavor, but not enough to warrant yelling to be heard during conversation. I love the polished, vintage feel. I've never had an issue with any of their drinks. They've got texture, flavor, and booziness down to an art. The thing about this place you probably know is that it's part of a chain. Local Edition, RIckhouse, Tradition, WIlson + Wilson, Bourbon & Branch, The Library; all part of the same franchise. These people oversell ambiance, speakeasy vibes and sugar so hard that they miss more important details: staff. Service. I just never get a sense people who work here are all that happy. It's just a job for them. I liked my latest visit a recent Friday. I came early and asked if any tables were free - the host said no and to instead book ahead next time. He was so put off by my question clarifying what he meant about how reservations worked. I still don't get it. Does that mean I shouldn't drink at the bar? Are the high tables near the bar off limits, too? No matter. I found one without a reserved sign on it and sat down. No one questioned it or told me to move. The host saw me and left me alone. And waitresses came to take my order! A far cry from the last time I wandered in. And they did have a mocktail on the menu which made me doubly happy. I timed my visit this time to see the Cosmo Alleycats and I recommend you do the same. If you plan ahead for a table and see this 20s-era band... it's like a cocktail and a show for all the swing dancers that follow them. read more
