Drinks: 4 Decor: 4 Service: 4 Been here at least half a dozen times during my time in SF. This place is not as fun when it's absolutely packed, but if you get lucky on a slower night, there's plenty of red couch seating, bartender attention, and live music to enjoy. Recently just came here on a Monday night and it was relatively empty, so we got a great table with red couch and a clear view of the live band. Drinks were decent. read more

Great cocktails. The band playing that night was awesome. There was one hiccup where we were seated behind a post. We could not see the band. We asked to be moved but there were no tables available. We were not happy about this. However, one reservation did not show up so we were moved. A note to the business: don't have a table behind the post. All in all, it worked out but it was pure luck. read more

Made a reservation to local edition to celebrate my husbands bday ! This is by far my favorite speakeasy ! Located in the heart of downtown SF you'll find a very inconspicuous entrance to a whole different underground world. Great ambiance and delicious unique drinks. We were very fortunate to have a front row seat to listen and see the cosmo alley Kats band playing that evening . Reservation is good for an hour and half. read more

I love love love Local Edition. Local Edition is a speakeasy located on Market St in the city. It is located in an unassuming building with a beautiful clock seen through their window. Once you enter, you'll be greeted by security to check your ID cards before going down the stairs where you'll be met by live music. You can either go straight to the bar to order or find an empty table where a server will take your order. If you're coming with a group, I recommend making a reservation. We were lucky the last few times that we were able to find tables, but it's not a guarantee with how busy this place is. I've tried the Ava Gardner, Casa Grande, and Dublin Down. Everything I've tried has been great! I have not had a bad drink from here. Although, the RKO is too strong for my taste. I constantly recommend Local Edition to friends looking for a place to go in the city. read more

The decor is newspaper/typewriter themed, which is quite unique and gives a nice vibe. I ordered the Rosebud and a shot of vodka, and I enjoyed the vodka more than the cocktail tbh. Servers were busy but kind, and seeing everyone have a good time on the dance floor is lovely. read more

Weird hours and doesn't advertise them correctly. On the yelp listing it says the bar closes at 2, but at 1:00 an employee told us we had to leave in ten minutes. I double checked with the bartender, who sold us another round at 1:05, that the employee meant that last call was in ten minutes, not that we had to leave in ten minutes. Yet, a few moments later, the same employee came around and rushed us to finish our drinks even though the bartender had just sold them to us. If you're going to close at 1:15 you should either advertise that online or communicate to your bartenders to not sell people an entirely new round of drinks 10 minutes before you kick everybody out of the bar. Great drinks great ambience great bartenders. But seriously who closes at 1:15!????? read more

Oh what a fun, fun place on a Friday night! Lovely crowd, great space, hard to find seating but lots of space to stand and lots of furniture you can stand by and keep your belongings on. Friday night features live music and dancing and we had a great time! The cocktails are always incredible, my favorite was Cynthia's Pearl, I forget the ingredients because I was already tipsy from our prior stopover at Bourbon and Branch, so I hope they maintain the names of these cocktails so I can come back for this! There are tables away from music and dancing too, where small and large groups can sit and talk comfortably while enjoying the vibe. Just amazing! Highly recommend! read more

What a gem! If we were actually locals this would be a hot spot for us most evenings! We stopped in for the cover-free jazz concert and we're blown away to see a 12-man ensemble on stage. The music was incredible and the drinks didn't disappoint. I was doing a sober month and asked for a mocktail. The bartender didn't miss a beat and asked what flavors I liked before crafting me a unique, flavorful and anything but basic mocktail mojito. It means a lot when a bartender offers more than just a Coca Cola or Shirley temple. The space is large and there are so many cozy seating options. Don't miss this spot. read more

LOVE THIS PLACE. Who ever was singing on the mic on Valentine's Day...I could listen to her forever. And the band! This lounge has amazing drinks, great service, plenty of seating. I think they were going for speakeasy vibes and I love it. Reserve a table in advance becuase the open seating is in the back of the room and hard to come by as the night goes on. The floor manager was having lots of difficulty keeping customers from sitting in the RSVP tables and also could not keep track of which customers were actually seated by the host. Her chaotic walking back and forth was distracting. The server was wonderful and sweet. She had to serve the entire place and did an amazing job. The cocktails are decent. The DJ that night was playing great music. It's really dark in there so if you're older like me and it was past your bedtime it could be hard to stay away. Great place to hang out with friends for drinks or just to sit and chill and listen to music, enjoy a cocktail by yourself. read more

Amazing bar. Great selection of cocktails. Really cool music. Pink lights really set the mood. Feels like a speak easy. They have strict covid checks. Makes you feel comfortable about the people entering the bar. They check id and vaccine card at the entrance. This bar is open till late (2am). Fun place to hang out for after dinner drinks. The cocktails are relatively expensive but ambience, music and an open layout make it worth it! read more

I dig it- cool laid back jazzy atmosphere and was a perfect place for me and some coworkers to toss back a few drinks and relax. Old timey vibe with an obsession with typewriters (you'll see if you go) takes you back in time to an old school jazz club. There was only one server working that evening even though it was a fairly busy evening, but she was awesome. Cool place- will stop by again when I'm in SF! read more

One of my favorite cocktail bars in SF. It's tucked underneath one of the busiest streets of SF. Dim lighting and vintage themed cocktail bar. Bunch of typewriters and old newspaper on display. They have live music on the weekends and they take reservations. I like that they are not too packed and there are tables for those who reserved with no fees. Came here to celebrate NYE and it was awesome! No cover charges, free party favors to get the party going, live DJ, and free champagne toast during NY countdown! The drinks are delicious and well made. My favorite is the Cynthia's Pearls. Local Edition knows what's up! read more

Came here on a Wednesday night with my partner. We missed the band but still wanted to stop by for a drink each because it has been way too long since our last visit. I remember drinks being good pre-pandemic...but not so much anymore! To be fair, there were two bartenders but the lady who made our drinks was not good. Local Edition: Terrible. It and was not served on a big rock and it definitely didn't taste how we remembered. Whiskey Sour: No egg whites and again, TERRIBLE. This has to be the WORST whiskey sour I have ever drank. It was super sweet, there was no sour, and the bartender lady topped it off with tonic water because she didn't make enough. read more

This is such a "hidden" gem, because really, who would ever guess that such a large, fancy, elegant bar would be through that one sketchy door? Everybody except me. I don't know what took me so long to come here, and I thought I had come by here before... Location: super close to Montgomery BART Reservations: make them through Yelp, it will save you time Menu: includes cocktails, beer, and wine I tried the Ava Gardner ($14) which was the girliest fruity drink I could find. It's jasmine tea infused with vodka, coconut milk, lemon, ginger, and basil. All that's missing is boba. Kidding. The best part is the live music that starts at 8pm. Singer, stage, instruments and all. Worth coming back for! read more

Love this bar Never thought I would enjoy a drink named Ava Gardner so much but I have a real soft spot for tea cocktails. All the cocktails here are delicious and the vibe is just splendiferous. Perfect place to chill pre or post dinner or just hang out with your friends for the evening. Excellent level of service and you will see all kinds. An actually chill bar/lounge on a Friday afternoon? And they take reservations? That sounds too good to be true... Except it's not! I was looking for a quiet place to grab some drinks and catch up with a friend Friday afternoon (evening?) around 5. I made reservations the day before and it was super easy, since they use Yelp for reservations. When my friend and I arrived, it was still mostly empty and blessedly quiet. We were promptly led to our table. They offer a variety of cocktails in addition to beer and wine. Prices for cocktails range for $13-14, which isn't too bad for FiDi. I tried two drinks: Romper Room ($13), which has capurro pisco, lime, spiced pear, honey liqueur, pink peppercorn, rose water. This was pretty good. I like my cocktails on the sweeter end (but still strong) and this definitely fit the bill. Field spot ($13), with gin, sherry, chareau aloe, cantaloupe, balsamic reduction, lemon mint. I loved this cocktail! Because of the balsamic reduction, it reminded me strongly of the pickled daikon you usually get at Vietnamese or Korean places. Some may find the idea of vinegar-y cocktail weird or disgusting, but this was right up my alley. We were here for a little over 2.5 hours and left a little before 8. It did get more crowded but never so much that we had to start shouting to hear each other. Definitely a great spot to catch up with friends over drinks! read more

Stopped by this bar with a date in December after dinner and had a great time. I'm real' big on speakeasy-type places, so this was an obvious choice after eating nearby. They surely didn't spare expenses with the decor in this place, and it looked especially cute decorated with lights and a tree for the holidays. There was jazz music playing, and with the room being densely populated and loud, it made for a lively visit. Since I had light food and drinks for dinner, I wanted to continue the trend here by ordering the Ava Gardner, which is a refreshing blend of jasmine tea, basil, ginger, and lemon, among other flavors. I remember really enjoying it. My date had decided not to order anything since he would be driving back to San Jose. My only complaint was that there was absolutely nowhere to sit, throughout the entire duration of our visit. Every table and chair was taken, if not by a person then by purses, jackets, etc. Although it did take a while to get my drink, I was really glad to have checked this place out. If you like (literal) underground bars, I highly recommend stopping by. read more

I'm glad this underground bar has re-opened post COVID. I came here with my now boyfriend for our third date before COVID, and it was a great, quiet, romantic spot on a Saturday night. We came back on a Friday night recently, and there was live music and swing dancing - what fun! We told the bartender we had come here for our third date a few years ago, and he comped us a free drink :) Would recommend this place for a more upscale night out in Soma. read more

One of my favorite cocktail bars in San Francisco! I've been coming here for years. The ambiance, cocktails, and service can't be beat. Best part is they have live music and no cover! Cocktails are ~$13 but totally worth it - you can't go wrong with any of them, they are all so tasty and strong! It's a great place to stop by for drinks before/after dinner or with coworkers after work. You really feel like you're transported to the 1920s! There is a dress code though so make sure you're dressed acceptably (my boyfriend has been denied entry in the past for wearing athleisure wear such as adidas track pants). read more

Fun underground bar concept. Super crowded on a Thursday night, and a bit difficult to squeeze your way up to the bar to place an order, but the place is huge. When there's live music, it's fun to sit and watch, but probably wouldn't recommend if you're on a first date trying to have a conversation. What an amazing place with an amazing vibe! We had reserved a table around 9pm so we can grab some drinks after dinner while enjoying some jazz! And I have to say this place did not disappoint! Right from the drinks to the service to the ambience was on point! The band that was playing was Cosmo Alleycats and what an amazing performance. Although we did not participate in dancing like some of the other couples did, we truly enjoyed watching others dance. This place just has such a happy vibe! Highly recommend it! read more

always come here on occasion for a good drink and chat. recently i arrived for my birthday and had the best time. the bartenders are always super nice and i think that what sets them apart from other bars is their creative menu selection. not only this but the vibes are different from alot of places in sf; classy but not standoffish. would def recommend if you are new to the area. definitely giving speakesy vibes. read more

This place is quite the hidden gem. My partner and I came on a Saturday evening in hopes of a great cocktail and this place did not disappoint. When you enter they check ID and vaccination cards upstairs before guiding you downstairs where you can either have table service or just order drinks at the bar. We had table service and our server was super friendly who helped us. We initially ordered the Ava Gardener and my partner ordered silver mirror. Both were delicious! The Ava gardener definitely stood out and was both of our favorite drinks for the night. I ended up ordering a second of the gardener and my partner tried the rosebud for his second cocktail which was also delicious. Cocktails averaged about $14 which I thought was pretty reasonable. They also have live bands / Dj that started performing around 8:30pm which I thought was really awesome. The whole vibe of the place is very chill and would be a great place to take friends before or even after dinner! The location is also great. I'd totally recommend this place and will definitely be returning in the future. read more

I really enjoyed the music they played last Friday. There were a couple throwbacks jams from the 90s-00s, hard not to raise-the-roof. Tempting. Very spontaneous and last minute decision - came here on a Thursday night around 8 pm after the casual dinner with 5 of my friends. As soon as I got there, I saw a big mechanical object as a decor which I already liked. Not only the entrance, the inside was completely inventor-themed and it was like a museum. The actual hall for the tables was also a nice environment with the live music, newspaper-like menus, and felt like we are in 80's. All the cocktails were interesting and the one bc with rose was very refreshing. My friend liked their pisco sour as well. Lovely bar in the city!! With the theme of being an old school newspaper they most definitely give a classy vibe. The jazz music and dancing in the bar exponentially improved our experience at the bar! The drinks weren't too unique but they were done very well. They have plenty of seating and give off a very warm feeling. The bartenders are very nice and were extremely helpful in deciding on a drink to pick out. Friendly, great banter, helpful throughout the escape. The escape game is split across multiple rooms with a good diversity of puzzles. Don't want to spoil too much here but they were good challenges. Drinks we incorporated throughout and presented like test tubes that were drinkable in a gulp, kind of like a cocktail shot. Personally, I found the first two drinks to be a bit too sweet, but I liked the third, which was coconut forward. The price is definitely a bit more costly. It was $100/person for a party of five. I understand that it was an escape room + the staff + the cocktails. If you max out the party size, it's about $85-ish per person which I think is pretty solid. RACIST bartender with BAD SERVICES!!! DO NOT SUPPORT THEM! Six of us came to local edition to enjoy the music on Thursday. We were really excited to try this place since many of our friends recommended it for me to listen for jazz music. Unfortunately, we experienced a bad night at local edition. The bartender, called MEGAN/MEAGAN, had a really bad attitude(maybe only to us as Asian!) She never smiled, talked, and interacted to us. Basically, she only had poker face when she served us. Bad service was one thing. Another thing was about racism which we think it was worse. Maybe our English was not good to her. She looked like she had troubles to understand us. I understood it since our first languages are not English. So, instead of saying them, I pointed to the drinks on the menu to show her what we want to order. However, she acted impatiently and intentionally to us, and kept asking us to say it loud. I thought she tried to make us feel embarrassed because she knew we couldn't pronounce them perfectly. On the other hand, we noticed that she acted totally different when she served the different race(white) of people. She could smiled, talked, and laughed to them. We didn't understand why she treated us so differently from the other race of people. Is it because our languages, colors, or something else which are different from her? Is it because she didn't like Asian people like us? We don't know. Honestly, if she couldn't handle people with accents or different color, please don't live or work in the San Francisco or California. This is not what California and San Francisco culture are. Our culture is major and diverse in terms of race, arts, music, cuisine, festivals, museums and architecture. Racism is not welcomed by San Francisco. We don't believe we are only the ones to be treated by her like this. Please educate your employee well enough before serving us! read more

I had the pleasure of visiting Local Edition in San Francisco and I must say, it was an incredibly unique and memorable experience. I recently moved to San Francisco, and I remembered coming to this bar before my move. It was a great place to get a drink and relax. I've been here a couple times after my move and it has been great. However the third time I went with a co-worker, I was charged for two extra cocktails, which I didn't realize until the next morning. Basically I paid over $100 for 4 drinks when I should have been charged $48. I also left a very generous tip (my bill was $80 and I tipped over 20%), but in retrospect, I obviously felt this was unnecessary as the servers messed up my order. I have worked in the food services and restaurant industry my entire life and I know when the establishment has screwed up. This is definitely one of those instances. I even confirmed with my co-worker the amount of drinks that we had. Anyways, I was told to email a manager, who was largely unhelpful. He offered to refund the 2 drinks, but would not refund my very generous tip. This is not how management should be dealing with customers. Update: After posting this review I got an email from the general manager, who basically said I was wrong, but that he would buy me drinks and refund the original drinks. At the very least he offered to resolve the situation. I have to say I am very surprised that such a fine establishment has such a backward way of dealing with customer complaints. I forgot to mention in my original review that I actually went back to Local Edition to speak with a manager, and they turned me away and told me to email someone. I think this is the San Francisco bar you've always imagined - or, the San Francisco bar you imagined when you were younger - before you knew about tech money and man buns, hoodies as a statement on disruption, ironic beards, gig economies, unicorns, VR, VC, open letters, GIFs and gentrification. Before all of that, when you thought of a bar in a great American city like San Francisco, you pictured this: a large live jazz band in a cool, dimly-lit bar with low leather chairs on casters, swarthy bartenders, strong drinks served in the appropriate glassware and lighting that's low enough to facilitate some questionable decisions. The absolute best part of this place and the thing that sets it apart is the wonderful live jazz band. It felt equal parts like stepping back in time and stepping up a notch to a more rarefied life where your delicious craft cocktail is served with a side of excellent live jazz music. The bartender was funny, witty and fast. I enjoyed our banter, and I really loved the drink I had. I also loved that people were dancing (even me, and I'm not a public dancer), but it was Kara's birthday and she deserves dancing. When I went to the band to request their rendition of Happy Birthday, I also got to visit a little bit with the band and that a good decision, because they were nice to me and didn't openly mock me for being every bit the tipsy tourist they probably really dislike. read more

Visit Date: Evening of August 1st Party Size: 6 guests I'm typically generous with reviews and always appreciate the challenges of hospitality--but unfortunately, our experience at Local Edition was deeply disappointing due to the conduct of one staff member. Our group arrived with enthusiasm to enjoy the music and ambiance, but from the moment we entered, we encountered hostility from the hostess that quickly made it impossible to stay. Even in the area clearly marked "open seating," we were actively discouraged from finding seats. When I simply tried to glance around the corner to see the featured performer, I was abruptly shut down. The tone and manner were so unwelcoming that our entire party chose to leave. We were not being disruptive or demanding--just seeking a respectful space to enjoy the evening. It's disheartening when a single interaction can turn what should have been a memorable night into a missed opportunity. Though, I will admit it was a tad noisy if you wanna have a decent conversation with your dinner dates. Started off our meal with oysters which were incredibly fresh, next came the oh so talked about fried chicken and I would say it was mediocre.... I think I hyped it up a bit too much because of the yelp reviews. Overall it was a delicious dish but not the best thing I have ever had. I had an awful experience with this bar. On my way, my bag got caught on my tire and I had a silly fall, scabbing my knee. I walk into Local Edition for my first drink of the night and the door guys said, "Are you hurt?". I said, "Yes, but it is not a big deal. I was rushing over here on my bicycle." Knowing every establishment has a first aid kit, I expected them to offer to help. Instead, they said that I cannot come in until I go to Walgreen's and clean my knee. I could understand if it was dripping to the floor but it was barely bleeding. I was shocked and said I was meeting friends there and that Walgreen's doesn't have a bathroom to use. They just shook their heads.. If every place was like that, I would have had to bicycle 3 miles home. I have no idea what the service is like inside, but I will never return. read more

Recently stepped into Local Edition, a cocktail bar and lounge nestled on Market Street. It was an experience to remember! The live music and energy immediately caught my attention when walking in. The synergy between the crowd, musicians, and bartenders was infectious - it's the kind of vibrant atmosphere that's impossible not to enjoy. DO NOT GO HERE. Terrible review. Two out of five of us were wearing open-toed shoes. One was male and one was female. The bouncer said that our male friend couldn't come in, but that the woman was allowed in. A female with closed toed shoes switched with our male friend, but we were still declined entrance. We checked the posted dress code and it specifies no flip flops. However, females were still going to be allowed in, males we not. It seemed as if the door attendant was on a power trip by denying entrance the our guy friend who swapped his shoes for something closed toed. The jazz band was honestly the best part of the night for me. Place was full but somehow it didn't feel like a mob scene, more like everyone was just there to unwind. However, during both visits, it became apparent that the majority of the crowd was more engaged in conversations than in the performances. The atmosphere is quite noisy, detracting from the musical experience. It's not the ideal spot for those looking to appreciate a live band. Beautiful. Bar. Yes, the two words can go together. this place is classy, pretty, and serves some damn good drinks. Brass Check will be your new go-to, trust me on that one. Can get very crowded on the weekends, but during the week after work around 7 or 8 the place is like your own private little basement newspaper oasis with fun music playing and candles everywhere. Last night I was kicked out from @localedition bar on market street and the reason why is because I grab some tap water from a VIP area that were not signs telling was a a VIP area, so I went to pour some water and the bar tender get upset and ask security guards to escort me to the exit. I was treat as a real criminal just because I grab some WATER from a wrong table, it is incredible that in this "open minded" city still places that can not think or talk and they just treat people like shit. I used go there a lot during college days. In fact, this was the second most preferdd place to hangout after college hours. Well, they really have unique and impressive ambiance. The list of cocktails in quite good and you can ask them to make you any of your choice, even if it is not in the menu. The guys working there are always welcoming. While going through the menu, you will find some rrally interesting names to the cocktails. Brass check is my favorite one. Went here Saturday with a group of friends. Worst service ever, the blonde hostess must have been having a bad night or she just hates her job. Not to mention, we saw 2 rats running along the wall, to the right of the bar. It was terrifying to see knowing we were consuming beverages where rats reside. We immediately notified the manager, she acted as if it wasn't a big deal, and said "I will let the owners know about that" What!?!!?? We left immediately. Never going there again and I don't recommend this place. Someone needs to notify the health department and the ABC about this place! read more

Got there around 11ish on Thursday. It's stared to get packed. I can't see very well because their lights are very dark or I'm too old...there was a live band as well. Moreover anything, I like how the drinks are strong and taste very good. My GF got the passion fruit thing, it was pretty good too. One star off because the smell of the place, it's just so strange to my nose. Overall, good place for a date because octahedral light:) and good place to hangout after work. read more

Luckily, my friend had already been to Iron Horse Cocktails, and suggested we go there instead. Walking down the alleyway it is located in was a nice getaway from the otherwise hectic union square atmosphere. Walking in was also a neat experience that felt like we were stepping out of the city into a tiny pub. We also really liked the atmosphere inside and the cozy upper floor that had an interesting mix of old paintings and woodwork, creating an eclectic feel. I got the We've Got the Beet cocktail with mezcal, beet reduction, ginger, fresh citrus, thyme and firewater bitters. I love mezcal's smoky flavors and was drawn to the combination of ginger, citrus and mezcal flavors in the drink. The cocktail was very good and had a nice smokiness from the mezcal, along with the kick from the ginger and zest from the citrus, creating a refreshing and tasty drink. My friend got the About Thyme, with gin, blackberry liquor, black pepper thyme syrup and fresh citrus. We both really liked his drink as well, which had an interesting kick from the black pepper thyme syrup that offset the gin and blackberry liquor nicely. While we only had time to grab a drink each, we were both very happy with the drinks and would definitely come back the next time we're in the area.
