Taco combo plate with chips and salsa
    Keawe M.

After a hectic week we did not want to cook and decided to walk over to Locals for dinner. Weather was perfect for sitting outside. Seats were comfortable and the service by Guillermo was both attentive and excellent. We started with chips, salsa, and guacamole, enjoying a margarita and a sangria. The margaritas were perfect but could have been served with much less ice. The sangria was delicious but the pour should have been more generous (it was just over half a glass). There is an opportunity for them to max out their game with better chips. They were thick and not as tasty as other venues. The salsa was a little salty, and was more liquidy than I personally prefer. The guacamole was excellent. While it seemed premade, it was fresh and had a smattering of seasonings to add to its taste. We had their tacos - our prime reason for heading here. I had their Locals taco which is their slow cooked birria recipe. I added the combo plate which included a portion of rice and a serving of black beans. I'm partial to birria and their's did not disappoint! The portions were just right, and the black beans were great. She had their Chesapeake taco and refried beans as a side. The shrimp, sauces, and vegetables in her taco worked really well together. We topped off the dinner with churros for desert. OMG! We'll be taking in this dessert treat again! Imagine four churros stacked in a squared setting with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, sprinkles, and chocolate sauce! It was a great way to end our meal! Again, service is a huge factor to us, and Guillermo went out of his way to make sure we had a good meal. Thank you Guillermo ... we'll be back!

**3.5 stars** Honestly, I've avoided going here because Mokomandy was my very most favorite restaurant. I was in the Sterling area and wanting tacos, so we took a chance on this restaurant. Walking in, it has been nicely redecorated to depict Mexican culture/cuisine, but it made me a little nostalgic for Mokomandy when looking at the bar. There was new art, chandeliers, and a cute little patio. It was a nice change! The service was quick and friendly. Our waiter was attentive and offered suggestions. We looked at the menu ahead of time and we were pretty hungry so we started with the chips & salsa. The salsa was yummy (not spicy) and the chips were handmade. Some of the chips were a little chewy still but there were some that were fried to perfection. They weren't free with every order like typical Mexican places, which didn't bother me. My husband got a mojito, which was well-made and honestly, a pretty perfect mojito. We each ordered the 3 taco platter, which comes with rice and beans. I got: El Jefe, Baja, & California Fish. My husband got: Breakfast, Birria, & BBQ. It was a good deal to get the platter! We tried his birria taco first and it was really good. It's the best birria I've had so far. The meat was tender and the dipping sauce was flavorful. My husband said his breakfast taco was spicy (the chorizo was spicier than expected, assuming), but good on flavor. He said the BBQ one was good but kind of one note. Of my tacos, I tried the El Jefe and it was like the birria taco without the dipping sauce and was the clear top one of the three I got. The fish taco was a disappointment, which I think was mostly because a lot of people hyped it on here. The fish was dry and flavorless. It kinda tasted like salmon? which I found weird. At this point, I was regretting getting the baja taco. It was really simple (to me, since it had ranch) and definitely catered to a "safe eater" population. The rice was really quite good and had hints of cilantro in it but the beans were a little salty. We ended with churros and we asked our waiter for no ice cream (dietary restriction) and he put the sprinkles and chocolate sauce on the side for us. He even asked if it was a preference and he could swap it for a different ice cream. The churros were crisp but missing more cinnamon/sugar and a little dry. They weren't bad, but I've been spoiled by Senor Ramon's. We'll definitely be back. I think this is a place that you try out a bunch of stuff and know what you like and don't.

The food was good, but I was a little disappointed by the misinformation the hostess shared. While we waited for a table, she claimed that chips and salsa were complimentary, but that was not the case. As my first experience at this restaurant, the service wasn't the best so I don't know the likelihood of dining here again.

Tacos and drinks are good. The staff is nice. Food comes out pretty quickly. Birria and carnitas tacos were really good. Firecracker taco didn't have as much flavor as I was hoping for. The fajitas are really good as well and so is the tinga taco. Inside is cute and fun.

WOW!! I am blown away. I've lived tacos all my life, and I can honestly say the Calornia fish taco was the best fish taco I've ever had. The flavors just sang. I immediately wanted to share it, (wait---no! don't eat that much!) and wished I'd gotten two. The Jefe taco was also superb, and black beans and cilantro rice were delish. Next time it's fish tacos for me

As much as I like the birria tacos here, and even though I can afford it, I must say that $6.75 for one taco is pretty crazy.

I would recommend a reservation because with rain outside aka the patio being closed, the whole inside was packed. A lot of the seats are super close which feels very European but you can hear most peoples conversations which can be annoying. Our waitress was really sweet and stopped by a bunch. We started with French 75's, hot coffee, and an espresso martini. The drinks were refreshing and quite large for the price. The espresso martini really reminded me of a grown up hot chocolate, I really enjoyed it. I later also got a cucumber vodka martini and it was one of the most refreshing drinks I've ever had - definitely the drink of the summer. For our food we started with the baked brie with fig and garlic and the escargot. The brie was a unique take on baked brie, I loved the way the flavors all melded and the fact the cheese wasn't completely spilling out everywhere. The escargot was soft with a phenomenal crumb/butter mix, the whole things really melded well and melted in your mouth. The bread served with it was nice as well, if only I had a bit more of it. For our mains we were here during brunch so we got the lobster omelet and the French onion soup with the side of fries. The french onion soup was great, a good amount of cheese and onions without being overwhelming. Fries were fantastic and quite large, a big portion for $7. They hooked it up with the amount of lobster. I would definitely come back to try their lunch tasting menu or other brunch items as well!

Started with an espresso martini, a smoked Old Fashioned, and the fritto misto to share. Everything was really good. Then we split the lamb burger and the shrimp risotto for lunch. Both were excellent, although I think the risotto edged out the burger. Our server Mike made the whole experience. Before he even brought us water, he showed up with a bowl for Onyx. Come on, that's an instant five stars in my book. We ended up talking wine with him for a good part of the afternoon. He had us sample a few different pours before we landed on a Nebbiolo we loved. Later, after another conversation about wine, he brought over a taste of a white we'd never even heard of because he thought we'd enjoy trying it. It never felt like an upsell. It just felt like talking with someone who genuinely enjoys wine and likes sharing it with people. Relaxing patio, great food, excellent cocktails, and genuinely memorable service. We'll definitely be back, and Onyx probably will too.

Food is OK quality and prices are reasonable if not inexpensive on their specials, like the steak and ribs for only $25. Good flavor and cooked ok but a nice combo for the price. Service is OK with some wait staff being more efficient than others. There were some who knew their customers by name and took time out to talk with them but that slowed down service a little for the rest of us. Nothing too bad but you might wait a bit for refills or something you need after your food or drinks arrive. We had cool fries and it took a bit for the staff to come back to our table to check in the dining room. Similar response time for wait staff outside when we needed condiments that were ordered but didn't come out with our entrees. Cigar menu is an ok selection where there is something for everyone; however, our experience was the place ran out of the first four cigars we selected and each time the wait staff had to come back to our table to tell us they were out of that cigar. Wait staff didn't know what cigars were in stock and which they were out of. Overall, very good experience for both inside the dining area and outside where you can smoke. Recommend The Bungalow Lakehouse as it is a good experience and has a variety of experience options.

The choices were: outside, the sports bar, or the dining room. We chose the dining room. A large group of people was sitting at a table. We were given a booth by the window and right by the server's station. Looking over the menu at home, we both decided that we would get a bacon cheeseburger. The entrees seemed, to us, to be too filling. The bacon cheeseburger consists of: "100% angus burger, apple-wood smoked bacon, vermont white cheddar, canadian cheddar, sliced tomato, and crispy leaf lettuce". We both ordered it cooked medium. The dish comes with fries. To drink, I had ginger ale while my husband had a Heineken 00. Our server was friendly and efficient. He made a mistake, bringing my husband a Coke instead of the beer. My husband corrected him. He apologized and retrieved the correct drink. The burger was dry and overcooked. It was more on the medium well side. In one way, I didn't mind that as I didn't end up with greasy hands or a burger that falls apart. The bacon and the cheese provided some relief from the dryness. The fries came out hot, which we appreciated. All in all, it was an OK experience; we would consider going again sometime.

While there are some good things about the place, which I will list first, there are some not-so-good things. The good --- When we arrived, the place wasn't busy at all. There were a few people sitting outside. The dining room was empty. Throughout our meal, we had the place to ourselves. Our server greeted us and seated us. Masha was very friendly, polite, and efficient. The dining room was decorated with artificial hanging plants. Also, there was a large mural of Eve holding the apple with the serpent coaxing her to eat it. Now for the not-so-good things --- getting to the entrance wasn't easy, especially for my husband, who is waiting to get his knee replaced. To reach the entrance, you had to walk down a paved path with descending steps after parking the car. Upon entry, we had to climb a somewhat long staircase. On the way out, Masha stated that there was a ramp and pointed to a door leading to the kitchen and said we could go out that way. We chose to exit the way we entered. Also, they don't have any printed menus -- just a QR code to scan for the menu. We found that to be off-putting. Fortunately, we had already decided what to order before coming here. We chose to start with "Zaytoun", which consists of "Mixed Pitted Olives Tossed In Extra Virgin Oil. GF". This was a tasty starter. There were a few different types of pitted olives. However, we didn't think that there was any olive oil in the small bowl; rather, it appeared to be brine. For our main course, we both chose "Beef Kofta" which consists of: "Beef rolls served with Lebanese Couscous, Refreshing Tomatoes, Cucumber, & Labneh". The beef kofta was very dry. Growing up, I sometimes had Kofta, and it often turned out quite dry. The kofta did have some kick, and the small amount of very tasty labneh helped mute the spiciness. The Lebanese couscous portion was huge. That, too, helped give moisture to the kofta. This was a filling meal, and we ended up taking some home. Weighing the pros and cons, the cons, alas, outweighed the pros for us.
