As a longtime fan I was excited to see Austin Grill back! It was a bit of a hike but met some friends at the newly opened location. Decor was a bit more subtle than the previous iterations but a good atmosphere. The menu especially the brunch option was revised. The brunch option is not bad for the price but, everyone at the table has to order it. The prices were a bit steep and you cannot mix & match the tacos, or fajitas you are stuck with one protein. The server told us that they will eventually allow that but not during the soft opening. I may be back to try the fajitas. I ended up having the Al pastor tacos. They were good, the cilantro rice & beans were tasty. A friend had the carne asada, the side veggie salad was bland and seemed pointless. The elote dip was tasty with a hint of spice. I'd recommend it! Draft beer selection is very limited, you can upgrade to a beer boot. Overall, a little disappointed especially with not being able to mix & match. I wonder if they'll ever have a secret menu for the long time patrons of the past concept. My go to would be "Willie Nelson". Buen Provecho! read more

In soft opening had to stop in for dinner. We used to go to their previous locations in DC and Arlington. Glad they are back. Official opening is Feb 10th. Hubby and I had trouble deciding... we ended up going gor the ruby trout and the chimichuri steak... basically creating our own surf and turf. Things started with a huge basket of warm chips abd a very tasty salsa. Hubby ordered their Cadillac margarita... tonight I stuck with water. Both our hostess and server were super nice setting a lovely tone. As we opted to do a duper early dinner things were quiet but dining roo was rapidly filing by 530. Bar area as well. On entering hostess asked if we preferred the high top tables or regular... we opted for regular table. Also noticed they have large booths that fit 6 along the wall. Because we actually have a real cacti collection we discussed the fake cacti decorating things. Liked how they used as part of the room section dividers. Part of me wished they were real but I know due to liability issues that would never occur. Meals arrived and the servings are huge. We enjoyed both. I predict this restaurant will be closed within the year. First this particular location has been a popular watering hole for decades. Changing it to a higher end taco joint/tequila bar is a big mistake. While the remodel makes the space bright and airy, the menu is somewhat limited and expensive. By somewhat limited I mean there are loads of appetizers. But only two salad choices, tacos that you could get with your choice of protein but no other variations a la the former tacos and tequila. Three tacos are $22 which makes them over seven dollars each. By contrast, tacos are four dollars each at taco Bamba In terms of taste, the takeout chicken tortilla soup was tasty but quite expensive at nine dollars for a very small portion. Think a cup, exactly one cup. The nachos were ridiculous. The takeout container was brimming with nacho chips, topped by what amounted to a mouthful of brisket all mixed together with a cheese whiz type spicy whatever that was on top. The guacamole on the side was honestly the best part of it. A very expensive $16 worth of nacho chips with a little bit of "sauce" on top. Having gotten takeout, we didn't get to sample any of the various cocktails or tequilas. I'm sticking with my prediction that what's needed in that space is tasty food that equates to good value for the money. I realize that prices are up everywhere including at all restaurants but that makes me even more careful about where I spend my dining out dollars. In my opinion this just isn't a good value and not the right concept for that location. read more

I loved the Austin Grill locations in DC and Old Town Alexandria. Unfortunately, this is nothing like those. I ordered the cheese enchiladas and they came out looking, smelling, and tasting like an Italian dish, similar to manicotti. I didn't bother finishing my meal. The Cantina Patron margarita was mediocre. The service at the bar was good but since the food isn't, I won't be coming back. I miss great Tex-Mex food and was hopeful for this Austin Grill. read more

Nestled in a super quaint area conveniently located next to a grocery, pharmacy and a few other store fronts that meets their customers/neighbors needs - Austin Grill welcomed us with a warm smile, excellent service and a knowledgeable staff. It was a little over an hour from me, however if YOU are near a good time can be had. Spring promises an outdoor patio and bar. The chips and salsa were good, and my wings were acceptable. However, my daughter did not receive the chicken enchiladas she ordered. Even after they remade them, the filling was clearly not chicken, especially compared to my son's meal. The manager incorrectly insisted it was chicken. To resolve it, they made her cheese enchiladas with a side of chicken. We realized upon leaving, after seeing the brunch menu, that she was likely served egg enchiladas. Thankfully, she has no allergies, but it was disappointing. I wonder if they ever figured it out that night, or maybe Sunday's brunch they wondered where all the brunch enchiladas had gone! We love that this is so convenient to our neighborhood but if we go again it may just be for a beer and chips and salsa. The rest of the food was just "ok". Decor is odd. They have vines all over, possible it's painted on the mirrors? The table we sat at was a four top but it was way too small for four meals and chips/dipping bowls. It's been many years since I visited an Austin Grill, I believe it was the location in Old Town Alexandria. When this popped up I suggested to my husband we should try it since our other place for mexican food closed. Overall food was good, we got the appetizer sampler the favorite was the brisket tacos. For our mains I got the chicken tacos my husband got the brisket tacos. The chicken tacos were good, had a little bit of heat (I'm not into spicy) so I ended up picking out some of the peppers no big deal. The brisket tacos, flavor wise good but they were tough. The service was just ok. took a while to get service and it seemed like our main course came within 2 minutes of getting our appetizer. Also it was windy today and they decided to seat us close to the front door where the gusty wind was coming in and there were other tables available, then I had my stuff sitting on the chair next to me, we were at a 4 top, and one of the staff members decides to take my chair for a party coming in. Now generally no problem there were just two of us but could you not take the chair that is clearly empty? Those aspects made me a little less than thrilled with the service on the whole, just didn't leave with a great experience. Also compared to other Mexican restaurants this menu isn't as extensive so just something to be aware of. Willing to give them another try since they are close by. read more

Return after a week because I kept dreaming of the food! Not only did I come back to eat, but as soon as I approached the bar the bartender Lexi automatically welcomed and even remembered me from my last experience. Once I sat down I let her knowledge in cocktails take over, she made me the most refreshing watermelon vodka cocktail I've ever had. The ambience was set to the most welcoming it could be. Lexi continued to kill it with her service and knowledge of drinks, but most amazed me is the way she could carry a conversation and be understanding of sports. Will be coming back for sure and will be looking forward to see what new cocktail Lexi comes up with next time! read more

Went on a Friday around 5:30pm. For starters, you should note that the happy hour is only available if you sit in the bar. There's nothing on the website that says this, and the hostess did not mention this limitation when she sat us. We had already been seated on the restaurant side and had started eating our chips and salsa when we learned that we were ineligible for the happy hour menu and pricing. Queso Appetizer - Large portion but flavor/texture were a little weird. Not typical CCQ. Wasn't horrible just not what we expected. Al Pastor Tacos - Tasty but arrived to the table a little on the cold side. Amount of filling (portion size) should have been a little larger Taste was good. Rice and beans good. Beef Fajitas - Excellent portion size. Arrived hot. Excellent flavor. Chips and Salsa - The chips were thin, fresh, and tasty... as good as any you will find anywhere. The salsa also had good flavor. We were there on Cinco de Mayo. Packed but we had a reservation so we were seated right away. Music inside was waaaay too loud. Our food was really good and the Lone Star beer was refreshing, but the service was slow, which I expected on May 5. I've been going to AG since they opened their first restaurant in DC on Wisconsin Avenue in the late 80s. My sister and I were regulars at the Springfield location for years - every Sunday! I was thrilled to see it reopening and so hopeful the menu would be similar. Unfortunately, it is not. Please bring back the food that made AG so fabulous. Black bean burritos with Ancho chili sauce (there is no burrito even on the menu - please bring them all back) and where are the portobello mushroom fajitas with peppers and onions - the perfect vegetarian meal?! My husband loved the pork carnitas, but sadly those aren't on the menu either. Management - Lose the trendy zucchini/butternut squash tacos, the eggrolls, trout, ribs and wings (I didn't come here for bar food) and stick with the TexMex food that made you famous. Understand they just opened so we will give them another go later on. There's no where to sit while waiting for a table unless you stand by the door or sit at the bar. The tables are rather small for a Mexican restaurant there's no room for all the plates. The bartender was less than happy to serve as we were only drinking soda while waiting for a table. Service was good for us, however the table seated next to us who got there before us didn't get to place their order until we were almost done eating. Was a bit disappointed as I got the southwest chicken bowl and it really didn't have any taste. Our drinks came in a water glass because the bigger glasses were all dirty. Prices are average. Beer choices are limited. The space is a bit crowded. I think if they got more bench seating with a bit bigger tables it would be better. read more

As a new restaurant in town decided to try takeout at Austin Grill. Found the staff to be friendly and helpful. But that where the good ends. For the price the portions are small, sampler platter with grilled wings are awful. I had a better and bigger steak at Texas Road House for half the price. The portion of beans and rice are served in a container the is the same size as a Nyquil cap. I would not recommend this restaurant. Spent $160 for a lackluster meal. read more
