This is really good barbecue, in a cute restaurant, served by an attentive staff. The food...yum. I had the empanadas, a salad, the brisket , some chicken, the burnt ends, the gumbo .. all yummy. The greens are a little tough but the flavor was excellent. The beans have a slightly spicy kick. We did the family style meal and then I ordered a few items to go. (Inner fat girl). I didnt get any dessert, next time. The place is cute. The atmosphere is lively. There is ample street parking (metered). There is a full bar. The drinks are really good. The bartenders give a nice pour. The servers are all really friendly..big smiles, full explanation of the menu. This is a great place to go with a group. So just I just got turned down because apparently they close at 8:30 pm on Thursdays. Now the fun part begins because I was there at 8:15 pm. Normally this doesn't bother me except that their hours say that there are open until 9pm. The bartender was very rude and disrespectful in telling my party of 3 off, as he informed us of these unofficial hours. The really fun part is that this is literally the 5th time in a row that these unofficial hours have come out, and prevented me from eating there. Don't believe me, just ask the VFW that I am a member of across the street. Don't worry I have told many people there the situation, and have brought this up in the past to the bartender Karen that works at lockharts. Honestly I am just done with lockharts now. I'm surprised to only see 3.5 stars... I've been here 3-4 times and have always had great service and a solid meal. I love the spicy pickles they bring you and the BBQ Nachos are a good choice if you're looking for a appetizer. Their burgers and sandwiches are pretty legit too but if I'm hungry and looking to go big, I'll get the 3-meat combo plate with ribs, brisket and spicy sausage... side of baked beans and mac-and-cheese if I'm feeling gluttonous :) Decent beers on tap too. The recently opened Lockhart's brings Texas style BBQ to Royal Oak. And it's good. The renovated building is bright and airy. Huge windows separated by rows of paint splattered exposed brick, provide a view of downtown Royal Oak while the open kitchen reveals the smoker and busy staff. After calling ahead for a table, our party was seated right on time. We chose Burnt Ends as an app, and they were amazing. Double rubbed and double smoked, these rib tips had an intense natural smokiness that was addictive--call it crack for carnivores. These are a must-try, and go great with one of the almost dozen Michigan craft brews on tap. We chose the Arcadia Rye IPA, which was hoppy with a nice smooth finish, and none of the metallic taste you sometimes get with an IPA. Deciding on dinner was a tough one. Ribs or brisket? Pork or beef? Chicken?--not this time. Luckily, there's plenty of combo options. I had the pork ribs with smoked brisket. Ribs come slightly charred, with a good helping of dry rub. This is not "fall off the bone" style of ribs. You've got to work at it a bit, but it's well worth the effort. And what about the brisket? Smokey comfort food heaven. The definitive smoke ring at the edge of the meat tells you this is the real deal. Of the four sauce choices, Lockhart's signature sauce was a consensus favorite. Other dishes at our table included pork ribs with housemade sausage, and with pulled pork. The sausage, seen hanging in front of the kitchen, was delicious, with a flavorful combo of spice and heat. The pulled pork had a nice flavor profile as well. Sides-- the mac & cheese is excellent. Creamy with a nice crust. Sweet potato fries--one of the few non homemade items, were tasty and not soggy. The coleslaw was first rate, and the hush puppies-- I could sit down and eat a plate full of these moist tots of fried cornbread. Other entrée options include Fried Catfish; Mac-n-Cheese Shepherd's Pie--smoked brisket with onions and a zesty sauce topped with mac-n-cheese; and a House sandwich fittingly called Quadruple Bypass-- a one-pound combination of pulled pork, smoked bacon, smoked sausage, smoked ham & smoked cheddar. Hopefully they have a cardiac tech on hand for folks who attempt to eat the whole thing. If you've saved room for dessert, try the Dr. Pepper chocolate cake--a generous serving of layer cake that is rich, moist and delicious. First impression...great atmosphere, nice and open, smell of pork cooking, wood burning...all things you'd expect from a true blue BBQ establishment. Then you're seated and they have jars with pickled cucumber, carrot, onion all in this great brine with a touch of what seems to be Cinnamon...whatever the case it's a touch spicy, a touch tangy and ooooh sooo delicious! For an entree I ordered the Carolina pulled pork. It was very tender and cooked to perfection. Where Lockhart's has Slow's beat is on the overall smoke factor in the flavor. Their pulled pork had this great smoky softness to it. The sauces are pretty good too, but that's where Slows out shines Lockhart's. Lockhart's Carolina/NC sauce is so vinegary that it's sort of a watery mess. I like to mix that with the super hot sauce they have though. Hot and Tangy, that's my favorite combo. As for sides, I got the collard greens and hush puppies. I guess having had hush puppies in Charlotte kinda set the bar to an impossible high because Lockhart's hush puppies were a bit to hushed and needed some more moisture...dry puppies...no thank-a-you! The collard greens were ok, but I prefer them by themselves and at Lockhart's they put them with peppers...not a fan of that combo. Just sayin'... When I heard about Lockhart's in Royal Oak, I was hesitant as I am a huge fan of Slow's and Red Smoke. Let me tell you though, after eating at Lockhart's, I was blown away... We walked in at 2pm on a Saturday afternoon and it was moderately busy, but we were immediately seated. After ordering our drinks and burnt ends, we studied the menu, but I knew exactly what I wanted... The Lockhart Special. My wife ordered the Smoked Ham. We started out with an appetizer of Burnt Ends, which Slows and Red Smoke doesn't offer. Let me tell you, they were moist, tasty and with a nice smoky char flavor on them. They were so incredible I couldn't wait for the main course to arrive. I was like a kid in a candy store a that point. lol Shortly after the finishing the Burnt Ends, the main course arrived. The Lockhart Special is an awesome feast to behold. Ribs, Pulled Pork, Hot link Sausage and Brisket, with the sides of Sweet Potato Fries and Baked Beans. The Brisket was to die for and melted in your mouth, literally. Nice flavor, awesome smoke ring and great color. The pulled pork came with sauce, and was hot and moist with a great flavor, and the was without sauce. Add some of their signature homemade sauces and the PP goes through the roof. I'll get to them later. The Ribs were awesome with nice flavor and char and fell right off the bone, yum... The hot link sausage had a nice kick and the Sweet Potato Fries were incredible, made perfectly. The Baked Beans were ok, but they were definitely the weakest thing on the plate, nothing special with them... My wife loved the smoked ham and I tried it also... Great flavor, but once again, the sauces helped alot. The Green Beans were awesome and of course the corn beard was good... They had 4 sauces: Lockharts BBQ, Sweet BBQ and Fire on the Red. The wife and I didn't care for the Carolina, but the rest of them were fantastic. The Sweet BBQ tasted like candy and went great on everything. The Fire on the Red was a bit spicy for my wife, but perfect for me, with just enough kick. I wouldn't consider it hot, but it is a little tangy. The Lockharts BBQ sauce was rich with a great flavor. Met up with friends to enjoy Brunch and the Founders tap takeover. Arrive at 11:00 am to a packed house. They were serving a wide array of Founders offerings including KBS 2016 and 2017. I've been here before and enjoyed a great dinner. I and previewed the Brunch menu and was anticipating another fine meal. Sadly breakfast this day at least is not Lockhart strength. We were told it would be a 30 minute wait. We waited for over an hour. We saw multiple four tops seated before us (just the two of us) that came in way after us. No possible way all these people did call ahead. It was terrible. We did speak with Dawn the Mgr and she informed us the Front Mgr was new. She offered to buy us a beer/dessert and sincerely apologized. Expectation theory. If you say 30 mins, it should not be double. Skewer in it with mild link, hot link, and some pickles. Win! - Thick cut, smoked, candied bacon = Win! Very rich, shared with friends. Two long strips. - Corn bead: Solid, nice portion. - Hot Link = OMG EAT IT. Then eat it again. - Cream Coleslaw: Crisp, refreshing, light not heavy. The semi-ok: - Marbled brisket vs. lean option was very fatty. Dislike - The pulled pork I had was extremely fatty, and slimy. - Ribs; Great smoke penetration, nice bark, but very little meat so not much flavor in your mouth. The unsure: Smoked chicken and sausage gumbo: First gumbo experience, found it very flavorful but unskilled to rate it's authenticity. While I enjoyed it, would not order again. I'm not sure what's with the bad reviews. This place was awesome and delicious! Went here on a Monday evening and it was empty, a few tables filled but plenty of open spots. Our server was very friendly and attentive. I went with the combination platter of brisket and sausage. I appreciated that they asked how I wanted my brisket. I prefer lean brisket but typically you aren't given a choice. As my sides I went with the vinaigrette Cole slaw and the fried redskins. Everything had flavor. I especially liked the complimentary pickles prior to the meal. The range of sauces was also good. Carolina mustard was by far my favorite. The price was fair as well. On pair with other BBQ places I've visited. I'm pretty sure when the founding fathers built this great country they envisioned true blooded Americans eating delicious slabs of meat at Lockharts. Picked up carryout for our daughter's birthday and was pleased with the friendly staff and the strict Covid precautions. The food was disappointing in its consistency. The whole split smoked chicken was outstanding- tender and moist and flavorful. The baked beans were another hit- possibly the best flavor I've ever tasted but they were very runny. The cornbread was pretty good-very dense and the sweet type. The ribs were so dry- sat under a heat lamp for way too long. The coleslaw was just disgusting- no flavor. The mac and cheese was okay, but instead of doing carryout in a metal pan that they could use to get it bubbly and melted, they package it in a plastic tub and the topping is just sprinkled on- definitely would have benefited from reheating but we were doing a socially distanced backyard celebration so we had to serve it cold. read more

Gotta drop this from 5 to 4. Been in here multiple times. We had our rehearsal dinner here a couple years ago and everything was fantastic. I've come for private events. The space downstairs is great. The people are usually very friendly and the service is good. Came in last night for dinner. For the most part, things were good. Pulled pork on point. Bacon was solid (as usual). However, the ribs were absolutely terrible. My sister-in-law said, "They're not really fall off the bone." I'm like, "No. More like gnaw off the bone." Extremely tough to eat. Just not good at all. The "marbled" brisket was a slice of lean brisket side-by-side with a slice of fat. Not sure what happened there, but it too was a bit tough/dry. The bbq here is 7/10. The staff can very from 2/10-8/10 depending on time of day how busy it is and who is working. Been there many times and always leave full. Their sauces are alright nothing special but pairs well with the bbq. Not bad, but not great. I was in Troy for work with a few colleagues and we decided to come here for dinner. Parking is either on the street or in one of the public lots, both require meters. The interior of the restaurant is rustic, lots of exposed brick and beams. Pretty cool interior, probably historic building. The server was great, really quick and friendly and kept our drinks filled. They brought out spicy pickles while we looked over the menu and these were really yummy. I ordered a 2 meet combo with fatty brisket and ribs, my two sides being deviled eggs and cole slaw. As you can see from my previous check-ins and reviews, I am a HUGE barbecue connoisseur and have eaten it at amazing places all over the country. This is not one of those amazing places. The fatty brisket was on the dry side, and was sliced the wrong direction (with the grain) That means there are long stringy strands of meet, brisket should be sliced against the grain. The ribs were just ok, flavor was decent but it really wasn't that tender. The deviled eggs were really good, really nice texture and flavor. The cole slaw was REALLY sweet, like diabetic bomb sweet. I shouldnt have to drown sausage in BBQ sauce to get it down. Half chicken was moist and tender, but under seasoned and had virtually no smoke flavor to it. Which is awkward, because chicken doesn't take much smoke to get a very potent flavor. Also no white sauce with a half chicken? What kind of BBQ joint doesn't offer that? After a short wait to be seated, our table ordered two apps to start with: Burnt ends and smoked bacon. I would have happily eaten these for dinner, too. They were both sooooo good. Burnt ends are the pieces that get cut off off the brisket on the first slice, that are too small to serve as a slice. They were smoky heaven! Smoked bacon is slow cooked in a brown sugar and black pepper rub. Can you say YUM? For dinner I got the three meat combo plate with sides of baked beans and mashed sweet potatoes. I chose brisket, sausage, and ham as my meats and they were all as smoky and tender as they could be. I didn't find any one sauce that knocked my socks off, so I mixed them together, a little of this and a little of that, and voila, the sauce was just how I liked it. I was so absorbed in my food that I can't even remember what the others at our 4-top ordered, but the only fail, as I recall, was the nacho. So, I was on this side of town getting a spa treatment, and was absolutely starving. I've been wanting to come here for a while, as I've heard lots of good things about it. The place was easy to find, and boy, what a treat it was! Walking in, I loved the place. Wood floors, plenty of seating, wide open kitchen where you can watch them cook the food. Place smelled amazing! Staff was friendly and helpful, and I got seated right away. I knew I wanted something brisket, so I checked out the menu to see what they had. The server got me hooked on the mixed brisket sandwich, with one side. I went with deviled eggs, and I will say, it was perfect! Brisket came out wonderfully. I went there on Father's Day, they offer call ahead seating, so we did that and we sat down just a few minutes after we got there. I ordered the 3-meat combo, hot sausage, brisket, and the quarter slab of ribs. My two sides were the sweet potato mash and the corn cup. Everything I ordered was perfect. The marbled Brisket was moist but with some pieces of crispy bits on it. The 1/4 slab of ribs was tender and fall off the bone and the hot sausage was moist with a nice bit of spice to it. Everyone at the table was sharing bites of things that they ordered, we were all happy with our choices. There were a couple hamburgers ordered, which were enjoyed by those who ordered them. And the mac & cheese was raved about at the table. We will be coming here again. The table enjoyed getting the small glasses of the craft beers they offer. Good place for smoke meat! Came here on a Monday and it was fairly empty. The smokiness can be smelt even from the outside of the building. Can't decide what to order so I got the Lockhart's special which is almost like a sampler of their smoke meat. The smoke flavour was amazing in the meat but here are my take: pulled pork was ok but was dry so you need to add sauce. The sausage, mild was ok but not sure if I fully like it. The hot flavour sauamsgse had a good kick to it...on the after taste which keeps adding after each bite so it gets hot! The ribs was decent and I didn't mind it. The best had to be the marble smoked beef brisket, the flavour was amazing and highly recommend. Definitely this place is worth checking out. read more

My fiancé and I went here completely random choice. BBQ was awesome, the only reason I have to say 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the service. When we came in, no one was there..... Never been here before, no sign, so we sat ourselves. Haha. Once the hostess discovered us, she was kind of rude and didn't set us up for a good experience. The server, completely forgot about us, as well as the complimentary spicy pickles. It seemed that he was gauging his tip, because I didn't get a beer. (Pickles were awesome), (great beer selection). Amazing BBQ. I wish the service was up to par. The brisket was melt in your mouth. The Lockhart special only $20.99 is a good deal. Really spicy sausage. Ribs,.... Omg. Smoky. Had I written this review a year ago it would have been different, and in the meantime I've given several recommendations to this place but based on my most recent experience I'm sad to say my opinion has changed. Drinks: many beers on tap around $6-7/pint, full bar, friendly bar staff. Food: Pulled pork platter with Mac n cheese & sweet potato fries side. The food came out really quick, I'm talking within 5 min. from ordering. That's almost too quick for confidence in my book. I had a sneaking suspicion that the freshest thing on my platter would be the sweet potato fries and I was right. There was a good portion of pulled pork 1/2 lb. with good smoke and little fat, but it was room temp at best. The mac n cheese was freshened up in its own "crock" topped with bread crumbs but definitely came scooped out of a casserole dish and about 3/4 cup worth. Portion wasn't my problem here, for $15.99 you get more than a healthy amount of food for 1 person. It was the overall pride in smoked meat and their accompaniments that was lacking, spare me the sad piece of white bread, onions and pickles. There are a lot of good bbq places around these days, this visit just didn't cut it for me. read more

Nice to see a BBQ place in downtown Royal Oak. Love the variety of sauces right at my table. Sausage and ribs = delicious and great flavor Pulled pork sandwich = smokey flavor and delicious, although I had to pour on the BBQ sauce because it was dry.
