I was visiting Philly for work and had time for a pre-dinner drink and this was a block or so from where I was to meet colleagues so I popped in for a quick one. HOLY SMOKY! I'm from out of state and there hasn't been smoking permitted in bars in many years where I live so this place was like 1992. Or maybe 1972 based on Farrah F.'s pic hanging on the wall. I only had one beer, but it was cold and served by a friendly and attentive girl. People came in while I was there and got take out wings that smelled like yum and they had a solid mid-week happy hour crowd going on. It was "ok" but nothing special. It's true - as soon as you walk in, the prolific amount of smoke in the bar immediately transports you back to bars of yesteryear. Somehow the wet tables and vintage Miller paraphernalia are able to distract from the modern jukebox and cell phones in peoples' hands just enough to allow you to settle into that fantasy. That is, if your fantasy is a gritty dive bar whose scent sticks with you long after you've had last call and since gone home. It's hard to be too specific otherwise about Locust. Smoke, cheap beer and a pretty solid juke box. I don't think I've ever started a night here. I've ended a few though. The proof is in the way your clothes smell the next morning. You leave, marked and everyone in your home (including your cats) know that you went to Locust Bar. Why do I return? Usually, I'm with a group of people and someone puts out the call for pitchers. At this point in the night I'm not ready to go home and I feel like a few more pints before retiring to my bed. With the right group, this can be a very good place to hang out and BS. Will I be back? Every single time I visit a new city outside of the Bay Area, I need to do at least three things. 1) See the sights. 2) Try a signature dish or food item from that particular city. 3) Karaoke. Well, I had spent the day sighting seeing in Philadelphia with my dad and uncle. I tried an authentic Philly Cheesesteak sandwich (and the Yelp review is coming soon). After a few Patron shots and some delicious beers; I had the itch to karaoke, so I jumped on my Blackberry and found this place listed for Sunday night karaoke. At this point, I definitely know I need KA (Karaoke-holics Anonymous). This place is a total dive bar. It's small, cramped, and dirty. This joint has a mixed crowd. Some people were watching the Eagles game, some were just drinking at the bar, but most were enjoying karaoke. The bartenders offer very strong drinks at low prices. A Patron on the rocks was $7. Nice. The karaoke song selection was very extensive and had all of my favorite karaoke songs. I signed up for a couple songs and waited for my turn. The karaoke crowd was small, but extremely lively. Everyone sang along to the chorus of each song and clapped at the end of the performance. These were karaoke diehards with manners. No douchy frat boys or silly sorority girls singing lame songs in large groups. These people were "professional" karaoke singers. And it seemed, almost everyone somehow knew each other from Philly karaoke circuit or from the Locust Bar itself. And well, any good dive bar has that quality. When it was my turn, the extremely casually dressed patrons were staring at me as I walked up in my slim fit pea coat, pinstripe dress shirt, form fitting jeans, and leather dress shoes. They were trying to figure out where I came from. It was obvious that I wasn't part of the regular crowd and nobody knew me here. As I grabbed the mic, I realized that my dad had never seen me karaoke. And growing up, whenever he watched me play baseball, or soccer, or run track, I always got nervous. But I brushed the anxiety off and started singing, "Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine Pt.1" by the legendary James Brown. It was tough to dance around since the place is cramped and the mic is not wireless (and had it been wireless the rating might have been higher). Regardless, I tried my best to sing, dance around, and "shake my moneymaker." The crowd was definitely into the song (and my antics). People were dancing. My dad was rolling his eyes (and smiling a little). My uncle was pumping his fist (and dancing a bit). At the end of the song, the crowd started to chant my name. "Archie! Archie! Archie!" Who has a favorite new dive bar? This guy right here. Locust Bar has everything that I need in a neighborhood drinking establishment. Good food? Check... and cheap to boot. I had a roast beef sandwich that was delicious and messy and I needed about 24 napkins to wipe all the gravy off my fingers every time I took a bite. Now that's a roast beef sandwich. Plus, it was $5.50. I'll take that over spending $9 for the overpriced mediocrity at Cosi any day. Bar games? Check. Well, to be specific, the only game I saw there was the only one I ever need to see. Silver Strike Bowling! And it's only 50 cents per game? Oh HELL yes. Good jukebox? Check. It's one of those newfangled digital ones, which I like, because if people start playing Journey and other crap like that, I can put on a 10 minute Ween song and annoy everyone (although, I have a feeling that in this bar that would be appreciated more than not). Good bartender? Definitely. The guy who was there was incredibly nice. He looked like he might be a little gruff when I first saw him, but that was not the case at all. He quickly poured us our pitchers and was very friendly when I asked him for a food recommendation. Atmosphere? Great. Just people being themselves. Old and young, guys and girls, talking and just generally doing their thing. I couldn't ask for a better atmosphere than that. **Bonus** They have waffle fries. That is its own star right there. Overall, the 4 of us had sandwiches, waffle fries, onion rings, and 3 pitchers of Lager, and with tip it was $60. I've heard of man-crushes before, but can you actually have a crush on a bar? I like dive bars, and this is a shining example of one. A nice long bar, a jukebox, some kind of arcade game I didn't pay attention to but was still glad they had, plenty of booths, two giant TVs to watch sports, and no one getting testy if a little beer got spilled. Definitely a comfy place to spend an evening. The jukebox is a very cool feature. It takes dollar bills and even credit cards. These things are getting super high-tech these days I guess. There's even a little space in front of the jukebox where you can dance. Not that people go here to dance, but when a member of your group puts on Safety Dance, things just happen. The music is really the perfect volume, loud enough to hear and rock out to but not so loud that you can't hear one another talk. I know what you're wondering - this is a BAR, how were the drinks? I was the DD so I have no idea, but everyone else really seemed to enjoy the lager. One more thing to note: smoking is permitted in the bar and it does tend to linger, so take into consideration that your clothes and hair will most likely smell a little bit like smoke afterwards if you spend a prolonged period here. read more

Sunday is Karaoke night at Locust Bar and I love it. yeah yeah yeah.. so i'm Asian and I like Karaoke. whatever wanna fight about it? Anyways! It's a great crowd and there are a lot of regulars. The song selection is awesome (from The Beastie Boys to The Temptations) and it's a great mix of people. Even if you don't like to sing karaoke it's still enjoyable because you'll either be blown away by some of the least suspecting people belting out Aretha or have a laugh over some people who just love singing so much they don't care if they make asses of themselves. Oh and another good thing is that there really isn't any super sloppy drunken karaoke which is good because that gets old quick. It can get a little crowded and hard to find a seat but all-in-all it's just really chill and a great smoking bar. read more

I can't believe I've gone all this time yelping and havn't reviewed Locust Bar, my word. Quite possibly it is one of my fave spots in Center City, it's divey, the juke box has some pretty bad stuff on it, the food aint all that, but who needs all that stuff. It's a place to get a drink with friends, or a pitcher, er or several, kick back and people watch. Locust Bar attracts some interesting folks, all who seem to match the bar perfectly. And do try to hit up the karaoke night on Sundays. read more

I've been in here a couple of times now so I should probably review it. Locust Bar is an interesting nexus of people. Barflys, young kids, Jeff students, people that work at the hospital, and the odd rastafarian. People of all races comingle here, sipping brew and chatting with each other. If only the rest of Philly got along so well. Beer, its reasonable. Guinness and Yuengling were both cheaper than anywhere else in CCity. Bartenders were attentive and fast. The Tattooed Lady Bartender was my favorite of the bunch, but the Peter Griffin lookalike served a good beer as well. The roast beef sandwich with sharp provolone is the way to go. Nice and tender with a nice gravy on it. Nick's Roast Beef should take note, THAT"s how make a roast beef sandwich. The sharp provolone I asked for complimented the sandwich well. Cajun fries and waffle fries also were very good here. The jukebox has a nice selection and is almost always cranked when I come in. They have several TV's for your sports viewing pleasure, which is also nice. My only gripe is that they allow smoking in here. Locust Bar walks a fine line between utopian dive bar and dingy dirt hole but it walks it so well. The dimly lit, oft cramped, Washington Square West haunt is an ideal spot for cheap drinks and great bar food. It has everything you would want from a dive: gluttony-inducing wings, four different types of french fries, and belly-filling sandwiches. The prices are dirt cheap and the bartenders are awesome. Locust Bar is my default choice for many different options downtown, including quick eats, a place to start the night, and Quizzo. It is my favorite dive in Philadelphia but be forewarned, they only take cash. read more

I went here on an epic county-wide pub crawl for my 31st...I don't plan on living long. Anyway, we just wanted to get the day started off on the right foot, have a quick shot and then have lunch at the sorely missed Maru Global. My dining associate and I both had the shot, Jack Daniels neat, and it was easily entering double-to-triple-sized realms. We'd almost left when I remembered that Philly is BYOB, so I ran back and picked up a 6-pack of PBR to bring to Maru (Ryo loves PBR). Just making chit-chat, I let it slip that it was my birthday. We'd arrived at noon, and I was in no condition to do much else but breathe by 12:30. Great people, a bunch of crazy midday drunks and some free birthday shots will do that to a guy. I don't remember much else about that day. I sang Bonnie Tyler's "I Need a Hero" at something that might or might not have been a karaoke event. A close, non-dining associate of mine vomited in a sink precisely 15 seconds after the bartender asked me to tell him not to vomit in a sink. And finally, I found myself "reclining" beneath a bronze statue of a pretzel in Manayunk. I'm told there is photo and video evidence that leaves little to the imagination and loads to the desecration of the human psyche. So, naturally, Locust Bar is a place you should go. Seriously, I've been back since and have different (yet also fun, and occasionally weird) stories that don't quite do the little place justice, but definitely confirm that it's a repeat business-type of place. You might just go for a quick starter shot on your birthday, but it's just enough of every little thing -- dive, hangout, a little creepy, strangely comforting, locals joint -- that you'll go back, and you'll love it. One Sunday, I was standing around at karaoke. The 50something guy playing the bowling ball game next to me said "If I don't get a strike here, I'll give you a dollar!" Unfortunately, he didn't get a strike there, or any of the next seven times. As he left, he insisted on giving me 8 rumpled dollar bills, despite my objections. "A bet's a bet," he said. I think he might've stayed longer if he had had more than $8 on hand. Locust is the best terrible bar in Philadelphia. Pitchers and places to lock your bike across the street... you had me at hello. I watched the entirety of the Olympics here, in wrapped attention with the other usuals: tame, quiet folk. As my cousin put it, "It's one-third med students, one-third hipsters, and one-third homeless people." Well heck, that's my crowd. The best part of Locust Bar is that anything goes. You can literally smoke a cigarette while playing cards and waiting on your food delivery to arrive (even though they have a kitchen and the food isn't bad). Many times I've walked by and felt like a beer and some lunch but the smoking always makes me forego it. I'm a fan of dive bars and i dont have anything negative to say about Locust bar. But for some reason i just don't feel "at home" here. I dont think i'll ever become a regular. Like i said, i have no complaints. The bartenders are great. There's a man that will tell you off-color jokes all night, he's my favorite. The drinks are cheap, around $3 for a shot of Jameson. This place is the ultimate neighborhood watering hole. I live a block away so I'm totally biased but I love that this is the closest spot for me to grab a late night beer. Cheap pitchers. Karaoke on Sundays is always a great time. Only complaint is that the food tastes like somebody took objects and dropped them in canola oil. Out of the two regular bartenders, I definitely prefer the fat man who tells dirty jokes over the pretty girl bartender they use on weekends. The pretty bartender is mean and must hate getting tips because she always acts like getting you a drink is physically killing her and she'd rather sit and look at her phone. The fat one is way better and nicer, and if you aren't wrapped up in conversation he'll come over and start telling you jokes about nuns and cunnilingus. In all, this place is a classic Philly bar in the way that you don't really see in Center City that often, and that's what makes this place my favourite! read more

Once upon a time, the locust bar was my destination every Sunday Night for Karaoke. The Bar would be packed to the gills with diehards, no fratboys singing bon jovi or woo girls gang-chorusing spice girls. I'd be lucky to get 2 songs in, but had a blast. As years passed, I got a real job, and Sunday night wasn't a weekly possibility. DJs and Bartenders changed, and smoking was banned, yet they kept on puffing. I started going back a bit this year, but it isn't quite the same. Locust bar is definitely a dive. Its the type of place where there's always a couple older regulars at the bar, where domestic beer is cheap. Its the type of place where if you walk in most nights half the room will turn to stare at you. Its a classic railcar bar too, bar on one wall, line of booths on the other, narrow aisle in between. Its not a faux dive, or an ironically divey hipster haven, its just a simple, unpretentious bar to drink, watch the game, and kill the time between work and sleep. read more

I love this place and I am not even sure I can properly express it in words. When I see it on the corner, heading back to the PATCO to Jersey, it calls to me. It knows me by name, beckoning from it's dark depths. Come have a cheap, cold beer. Come sit and hear foul jokes from a fabulously surly bartender. Great dive in CC. It's cheap, convenient, and the people that go are nice. We got a booth, but didn't see a waitress (not sure if there is one) so we went to the bar to get some brews. Damn good corner bar. They have a surprisingly deep menu. The special was soul food so we got Fried Pork Chops, Greens, and Mac & Cheese, my buddy got wings. All of it was homemade and delicious. On my recent vacation to philadelphia, my husband and I stopped in on a Friday night for some drinks only. It's definitely a smoking bar, so be prepared for your clothes to smell when you leave. The drinks are reasonably priced considering the location in the center city. The bartenders were friendly and the music was awesome! For my money, this is hands down the best bar in Philly. Locust is not in the least pretentious, and it lets me keep up a bad smoking while drinking habit on the cheap. Lagers are like $2.75, and pitchers $8. Not bad. Somehow, they manage to find a decent game or movie to show all times of the day and night, and the clientele are some of the friendliest in Philly. The people there are construction workers, students, and professionals, and everyone is willing to tell a good story. The bartenders I've met have all been very good, and the service is almost always prompt. The place is pretty small and usually packed, so it's not for those who value personal space. Still you can usually find a booth or a seat at the bar. You'd also have to be totally hammered to actually enjoy their food, but at Locust $20 can buy you a one-way ticket to drunktown, so that's not really an issue. read more

First thing first - it's a smoking bar, so if that bothers you keep on scrolling. We came in on a Sunday afternoon - not super busy, but not dead either. You can tell this is a great local hangout. The bartender was very nice and answered any questions we had. There was a nice selection of beer. We ordered sandwiches (cheese hoagie and steak hoagie) and fries. OMG was it good! And huge portions! They wrapped up my leftovers for me (cause there was no way I could eat it all). I've been to Locust 3 times - my boyfriend used to go there so wants to get nostalgic when he's back in town. Locust Bar is definitely a neighborhood dive bar. When in a tough spot while waiting for some infuriatingly slow takeout, we took our frustrated faces to be filled with beer at this dim dive. The service was quick and efficient, even with IDs requested and head piled on top of pints. Thanks to our polite and friendly bartendstress who made our short visit pleasant. The $4.25 price tag for IPA was also kind to my stressed wallet. -1 star for lingering smoke smell (great if lighting up's your thang thang) and for the gentlemen who informed us we could not eat our otherwise procured appetizers while we waited for our lunch entrees. Stopped in here while working the polls yesterday since there was about a 3 hour gap between shifts. It was during the day, but, there were regulars there that were fun to talk to.Bartender, a younger girl with dark hair, was also great. At first I was little "Eh..that's okay I guess." I got charged almost $15 bucks for a Jack & coke and a beer, but, after seeing the size of them (about 20 oz), I was pleased. Really wish I had stopped here initially and not Irish Pub for lunch. I paid that amount for food and a drink not including tip. Would of came here first after learning they had food at a steal. Oh The Locust, how I love you. The place doesn't look like much, but it's the quintessential neighborhood bar - the bartenders are friendly, the drinks are cheap and mixed strongly (none of that watered-down fruit juice that you get at higher end bars) and they have a great juke box in the back that is actually very reasonably priced. The bars is always full of regulars and it's situated right near a lot of great restaurants, so I'm usually in their either for pre-meal drinks or for a night cap. It IS a smoking bar, a rare sight in Philly, so if you are a non-smoker it may be a shock to the system, although they do have an excellent air filtration system, so it doesn't feel too smoke filled. If you are a smoker, it's heaven - a friendly place to get together that will get you liquored up while you puff away. Much nicer than the other smoking joints in Philly like McGlicnchy's. read more

Two words: dive bar. I'm not sure if the patrons would agree with me, but that's what Locust Bar is. Now, that said, I actually rather like the place. The bartender, Pauly, pours a mean long island, which will set you back less than $10. The place is totally unpretentious, so much so that I felt like an overdressed douche when a last-minute change of plans left me with some time to kill before heading out to NoLibs to join friends. Self-consciousness aside, I've never had a bad time there. They do have smoking inside here, so that could be a good or a bad thing, depending on how ya swing. It is cash only, and the ATM there charges a flabbergasting fee, so be sure to grab a $20 before you head over! You probably won't need any more than that. read more
