Chili and fries

Larry M.'s Instagram reel review put me on to this Downtown spot, and when I checked the location and saw it was next to my work, I had to try! I opted for the chili and a side of fries. The chili was rich and packed some deep flavor. In terms of the chili portion, you're also getting what you pay for ($8.99). As other reviewers have mentioned, try to have your order ready before getting to the counter. They seem to service a high volume of customers in the morning and at lunch, so they're really just trying to be firm/direct in making sure they aren't wasting people's time. Food: 4/5 Service: It's a NY deli Ambiance: 2.5/5 I'm mildly allergic to wheat, so have to pick and choose when I want to hurt my body by eating bread, and this seems like a place where I'd be willing to do so. Needless to say, I'll be back to try one or two sandwiches for a proper review.

And they have milkshakes.

Absolutely fantastic, some of the most authentic and delicious New York style Jewish food. I come here every month with Father and he never stops complimenting the Apple Strudel* Owners are really nice, they're a little tough on the outside but give them a little trust and respect and you'll find they're some of the nicest people in DC. Can't forget about the ambiance, this place is cozy and relatively quiet. I've taken dates and family here for a tasty bite of New York's finest

I see a lot of complaints about the service, and dinging them for it. The people aren't rude, it's just a New York deli. Take all the time you want, just don't get in the way. Don't get to the register and then start looking at the menu, with ten people behind you. This is a give-money-get-sandwich place and that's it. I'm not a connoisseur of corned beef, but the next time I want it, this is where I'll go for it.

The food is delicious! But you have to keep in mind that this place works fast, I had read some previous reviews that the staff is rude, so keeping that in mind I went to get a Reuben. I didn't try to strike conversation or anything, I placed my order and I wasn't disappointed; everything about it was just on point and delicious. So much so I went the next day to order several items to go; this time I found the lady from the register restocking bags of chips and other items, she asked me what I was going to order so I started placing my order while she worked (not even looking at me) and eventually she went back behind the register and placed my order to the kitchen remembering everything I had asked for. She's not gonna greet you with a smile, but keep in mind they are busy and make some of the best pastrami you'll find in the area. They are not rude, but can't afford time to make small talk; in my book that's never an issue as long as the food is good

Nasty attitude from this employee who obviously hates her job!
Kevin M.

Wow, brings me right back to New York! (Not the food, the counter woman's attitude...) Came in for breakfast and were subject to a female employees horrible attitude. My friend asked if she could get a specific cheese on her breakfast sandwich and was yelled at... "No!" Yelled the employee, we were so taken back! Then we asked for salt pepper ketchup, and again she snapped at us saying "No, I'll put it in the bag!". If I wasn't soo hungry I would have walked out! To top it off, 1 bacon egg cheese on a roll, and one sausage egg and cheese on a bagle came to $16.96!!! Are you joking? Over priced with a side of poor attitude. No thank you! I'd pass on this deli! You have been warned.

I wasn't anticipating a nice dining room to dine in, but there it was so we did. Although it was uncomfortably warm in there. Must have been something wrong with their A/C because they couldn't possibly always have it so warm, especially in the middle of summer. I ordered The Clevelander and she had The Mel. And of course we hit their awesome pickle bar! Why doesn't every deli in the universe have a pickle bar?! The sandwiches are piled high with meat and so delicious. Several complaints about mine, however: the menu said it comes with mayo and provolone. It came out with no spread at all so I was brought mayo packets to apply myself, which is way less than ideal with a huge already assembled sandwich. And the brand new server (on her second day there) came back after we ordered and asked if I wanted cheese. I mentioned I thought it listed a cheese on the menu, which she confirmed. But then I ended up getting charged extra for the cheese that my sandwich was supposed to come with. Kind of lame. And while my friend was asked if she wanted hers toasted, I was not. I didn't think twice about it until mine came out toasted, which I neither asked for or wanted. Lastly, the sandwich was also supposed to come with "fresh cranberry spread" and if there was any on my sandwich, it wasn't detectable. But I decided not to even mention it because I didn't want to deconstruct my sandwich a second time. Regardless of these hiccups, I would certainly consider returning.

I heard good things about their sandwiches. My go to is normally Mangialardo's on Pennsylvania Ave in SE DC or Carl's Subbs on Rhode Island Ave in NE DC. I think I will stick to both of them next time. The staff was very friendly and helpful to me as a first timer but the sandwich was totally disapointing! NOT worth it, at all. I ordered a 9 inch capicola, ham, and cheese sub on the hard roll. The roll was very good and fresh but I couldn't taste the cheese or meat in the sandwich because there wasn't enough of it. I tasted the bread, the toppings of lettuce, tomato and onions. I decided to deconstruct the sandwich and found exactly 4 very thinly sliced pieces of meat and 2 very thinly sliced pieces of cheese as pictured clearly in the photographs. I also noticed that the they have different prices for the same type of meats. For example, they have a $29.99 per pound Capicola and one for $9.99 a pound. I asked which went on the sandwich and of course it was the cheaper one. That wasn't surprising and getting my sandwich back to the office. I decided not to eat the rest of the meatless sandwich and just take the loss. I wouldn't come back nor would I recommend a friend to try it

On the weekends, there's a speakeasy in the back, which a lot of people don't expect since it looks like just a sandwich shop from the outside. That alone makes it a fun spot to pull up to if you're looking for something a little different. The vibe really starts picking up around 11 p.m. into midnight, so this is more of a late-night move than an early one. Mikey, the owner, who also works the door, is super friendly and always welcoming. The rest of the staff is cool as well, which honestly makes a big difference when it comes to the overall experience. Every time I've come here, the energy has been right and I've ended up having a good night. If you're looking for a low-key but lively late-night spot Caoo Deli is definitely worth checking out.

Both were done on Italian bread with sesame seeds (love). Ingredients were fresh and well filled. The tuna salad had mayo, celery, onions, lettuce and tomatoes. There were a lot of delivery drivers picking up orders so it took a while for me to place my order. Wish they'd have a separate order area apart from pickup. I wanted to eat there but it was way too chaotic with security, delivery drivers and people coming in and out of speakeasy door. All the way down to the mayo wallpaper in the restroom! As a Dukes Mayo fan, that's awesome! To the food and drink. We had a pickle soda and local sour beer. Both were great and tasty on a hot day. We had three various appetizers from the cool ranch onion rings to the Seattle fries with a mix of dope beet salad in there. All were good, the onion rings were definitely my favorite and judging by all the orders I saw around, it was everyone else's as well. The mains were the RPG and the fish special. The RPG was a bit heavy on the mayo, next time would ask for less mayo but it was still delicious as a char su pork fan. This hit the mark. The fish sandwich was tangy and spicy which made it delicious. It was a bit messy and the bun didn't hold up great but that didn't detract from the flavors.
