Unfortunately, the Beartooth Pass was closed between Red Lodge and Cooke City because of snow and high winds -- so we took the longer route that included the Chief Joseph Highway and yet still encountered some snow and sleet on the high elevation Colter Pass. Upon reaching Cooke City, we were ready to treat ourselves with some hot beverages and a piece of dessert. We stumbled upon the Beartooth Cafe. Upon entering, we informed the hostess that we were interested in hot beverages and a dessert and she apologized that they offered only "plain coffee", not the specialty coffees of a restaurant down the street. Perfect, we didn't need a fancy roast. My husband ordered a hot coffee ($3.75), while I ordered hot tea ($3.75). We split a slice of Amish Apple Pie ($11.75). The pie was delicious, and tasted home-made. My husband's coffee was good, and I was offered a tray with tea options. However, by the time taxes and tip were added, we felt that $25 was just too much for two plain (non-specialty) beverages and a split dessert (even in a touristy area with a limited season). Our server was friendly, but we weren't offered refills of the coffee and/or tea until after we had already asked for our check and were ready to depart. The ambiance was Montana rustic. Free parking was directly in front of the restaurant.

The ciders are consistently great and we always make a point to stop in when we're in town. However, visiting in the off-season can be tricky. When we were there, only one employee was working the bar. We ordered a beer and a cider flight, but after we ordered several more customers came in and lined up. The bartender understandably tried to take care of everyone, but ended up serving at least six new arrivals -- pouring beers and running payments -- while our order never came. After about 20 minutes we had to leave, which was really disappointing because we were genuinely looking forward to it. This isn't a complaint about the staff -- she was clearly doing her best -- just a heads-up: if you visit during slower months, be prepared for limited staffing and longer waits (and possibly no food service). We'll definitely still come back... just maybe during busier season next time.

We got one order of pancakes with sausage and eggs. The pancakes hung over the edge of the plate, they were so large, the eggs were cooked perfectly and the sausage was great too. We also ordered the Cowboy Tradition - 2 eggs also perfectly cooked, hash browns crispy and hot, sourdough toast and thick cut meaty bacon. It was a lot of food very well done. We ate about 1/4 of it and normally that would acknowledge the waitress or someone to notice but no one asked. All good. I had the curried gnocchi which was a decent vegetarian option but just ok. My husband ordered a tall boy Coors Light which was a normal 12 ounce can (not sure why it was called a tall boy). Oh and there are flies everywhere in the restaurant so I was constantly trying to swat them away. Not sure why as we haven't been in one place in Red Lodge with flies (not even open bars with all the windows and doors open). That part was really gross!!!!

We made our way to a booth and were greeted with menus. We had just had brunch, so we weren't really hungry. We each had a root beer, which was really good! I went with a scoop of huckleberry ice cream, my oldest had a scoop of vanilla ice cream and my youngest had the biscuit strawberry shortcake. Everything was wonderful! They also have a concert venue and Willie Nelson's son is playing there tonight!
