Baklava is now ruined for me after finding Lokum in Santa Barbara. Tucked away in the middle of state street is this beautiful and I mean BEAUTIFUL sweets and Turkish coffee shop. When you walk in, you are immediately struck by the wide variety of baklava options taunting you from behind the glass. They have more than just baklava but since that's all we tried, we will focus on that for this review. We opted for the traditional baklava, the version with extra honey and some Turkish coffee. Wwwoooooowww is all I can say. This place was awesome. I even looked into seeing if they shipped to San Diego (sadly they do not) but like that's how good this place was. My friend was visiting from Mexico, and I was searching for light snacks that captured the essence of Santa Barbara. McConnell's was one idea, but they're kinda mainstream and not as unique anymore (no offense and I wish them continued success). Tacos and seafood? Already out of the running. So I gave up and decided to go a different route and get something both of us haven't tried. That's how I stumbled across Lokum! When I think about Turkish delights, I think about "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" by C.S. Lewis and the 2005 film adaptation. Sugary cube confections that taste like jelly candies. Coming here, I discovered it's much more than that. The combinations are endless, with different varieties of shapes, fillings, toppings, and colors. Some have pistachios on top, others have cream inside. And a lot of them were actually shaped like rolls. In the picture: Top Left: Rainbow Brownie adorned with M&Ms. Delicious chocolate filling! This is such a beautiful addition to the northern region of lower State St. The interior, as you walk in, is just breathtaking, with everything from the light fixtures to the tiles on the floor being imported from Turkey. The staff are very friendly and greet you instantly upon arrival. They know their products and their service like the back of their hands and can answer any questions on the spot. Amazed at the beauty of the artisanal Turkish delight rolls in the display cases, it took me a while to narrow down which one I wanted to try. All of them look so beautifully delicious but I had to go with the banana chocolate to accompany my "bitter coffee." To clarify, there are 3 Turkish coffee options: the coffee with mastic (which was the owner's personal favorite), the hazelnut blend, and the standard Turkish which is best for those who like it bitter and black, with natural flavor. It was delicious and paired well with the very sweet, banana dessert. Oh and make sure to Google Turkish coffee fortune telling, if you want the ultimate cultural experience - shoutout to the Yelp SB CA, Richie D, for brightening my horizons with this knowledge! Lokum does offer Wifi and outlets for those looking for a nice classy spot to plug in at. I wouldn't suggest coming on an empty stomach as they don't offer any meal options, but they make for the perfect dessert and coffee spot, post meal indulgence. I was a little sad at how tiny the Turkish coffee portions were, as I love the flavor of coffee and would have enjoyed sipping on it a lot longer. However, I understand and respect their unique, cultural ways of serving Turkish coffee. If you're curious about the difference, just ask, they'd love to give you the full low-down and would do a lot better job than I could. The coffee was served with two little Turkish delight squares and a cup of water. If you're looking for a unique gift for dinner parties, holidays, birthdays, etc, Lokum has a custom gift box option where you can mix and match baklavas and Turkish delights. I love how on the gift boxes they give a little history and background info about the desserts. The cost varies per item additions with baklavas being an average of $4-5 a piece. Though I cannot recall the exact pricing of everything, I believe the Turkish delight prices varied per size and roll, but I do know they're definitely not cheap. Not a coffee person? They offer hot tea, as well! There are a couple vegan options for those who have no preference against honey. Want to make Turkish coffee or tea at home? They have all the pots and kettles, teas and beans you could ever want, all available for purchase and all imported from Turkey. I highly recommend trying Lokum! This space is absolutely gorgeous! We were walking downtown and the beautiful chandeliers caught my eye. Once inside, the staff were incredibly friendly, and great salesman. We ordered a few of the hand rolled Turkish delights to go as well as Baklava. My favorite was the chocolate hazelnut, the filling was a ganache I believe with hazelnut pieces. It reminded me of Nutella, but it wasn't overly sweet. There had about 8 or so different types of Baklava to choose from. They also sell coffee. They sell their desserts by the weight and you can mix and match your box of treats. This is a gem of a place that really stands out on State Street. The second you come inside, you are welcomed by the bright lights, walls full of loose tea leaves and coffee beans, and finally the colorful assortment of baklava. As first timers here at LOKUM, the employees helped us out and let us know how everything works. As a person allergic to nuts, I unfortunately couldn't try the baklava but my friends and family were amazed by how they tasted (jaws dropped!). They were also amazed by how hot, smooth, and delicious the coffee was . I came in with the goal of drinking their hot chocolate, but there was none to be found. Well worth a visit! (3.5 Green Stars) We went into Lokum just to use the restroom and honestly I thought at first that it might be just a tourist trap kinda place. However, we sat down to sample some of the inventive Turkish delight rolls ($16 for around 6 pieces) and then went back for more, going a little overboard ($35!). However, one month later, we are still enjoying the selection - one piece at a time is enough for my sweet self - and they are still fresh and delicious. The rose-petal-covered-nuts-and-pomegranate and the hazelnut-almond-cream are two definite favorites. The café itself is beautiful and worth stepping into just to imagine that you are visiting an exotic place, "full of eastern promise" (that was the slogan for Fry's Turkish delight, which bears no resemblance to the real thing!). It's helpful that Lokum publishes ingredients on their website. Here's a typical list: Water, Sugar, Starch, Coloring E124-E100-E141-E110, Nuts, Aromatic, Cream. Many of the colors used are actually pretty natural (e.g., chlorophyll or turmeric-derived) although some (E124) are synthetic. Would be nice to know what the ingredient "aromatic" means, but I guess that it's probably derived from spices and/or fruit. I also talked to a staff member, asking if the marshmallow listed in one of their rolls is made from gelatin, and he told me that it's plant-based (made from sugar) and gave me a sample of it. I'm giving Lokum 3.5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, for these reasons: · This provides a nice alternative to over-packaged, over-processed "candy" from destructive multinational corps (I'm talking about all of you - Nestlé, Mondelēz, Hershey, Godiva, Ferrero, etc.) · When buying them in-store, Turkish delight is delivered in a simple cardboard box - recyclable or compostable. They even let us use our box a second time to buy the second batch! · Most of the Turkish delight rolls are vegetarian (contain cream) while the traditional Turkish delights are vegan. None of them that I could see contained gelatin, so they are all vegetarian (rolls) or vegan (traditional squares). · Honestly, there's a benefit to opening people's eyes to cultures that they may have been previously unaware of, or even biased against. · Ingredients are provided but it would be nice to provide more information on sustainability or social impact of these ingredients (i.e., some more info on sourcing of nuts, sugar, etc.). · Similarly, the teas and coffee lack certifications and info on sourcing. The coffee beans come from Brazil, where farming is usually industrial and very little coffee is shade-grown. If Lokum supported coffee and tea with a positive social and environmental impact, I would be more likely to have a coffee there. read more

LOKUM is pricey but as a fan of baklava and Turkish coffee, I am hard pressed to think of any other place that does those items better. We tried the chocolate pistachio baklava and it was that perfect blend of sweet, moist, and crusty. In addition, the interiors of the store are gorgeous. Just going in to look at the ornate lamps in particular, is a real treat. The people running this establishment also seem committed to giving each customer 100% of their attention. read more

I was in the area and as soon as I saw this shop I knew I had to stop in. The place is a delight for the eyes, with colorful sweets and cups and saucers and other baubles everywhere. There were two young men behind the counter during my visit and both were polite and had great smiles. The man that helped me was ultra-chill, but gave me good recommendations and packaged my baklava safely in their boxes. The delights were put into a bag, and though it was a little squished (they are soft treats) I was able to separate them all out and arrange them nicely on a plate when I got home. Anyway, on to the food itself. I tried a variety of baklava including pistachio and walnut varieties, and trying to get ones that would provide more of a crisp outside. I bought 4-5 different traditional type delights and a similar number of different... what I would call "modern" delights. Hubby and I tried the baklava first. My overall impression is that they just didn't have enough of a crisp to the outside for me. Maybe my taste is ruined by eating inferior products but I was expecting more crisp pastry dough on top, and the softness of the top sort of made the whole rest of it disappointing to me. This was even the case on the pistachio "shell" type which the employee recommended as one of their more crisp options. Flavor was spot on so if you don't mind softer overall texture, I'd highly recommend this baklava. But it wasn't my style. I enjoyed the classic delights, though too few options had nuts in them, which would be my preference. I very much enjoyed getting to try lemon flavor and mint flavor. But my favorite sweets were the modern or fancy looking delights. Things with chocolate sprinkles on the outside, or little M&M type candies and such. The square shaped ones were especially visually attractive, and they all had great flavors. If I stop here again, that's the case I'm going to head to. :) read more

The Turkish Coffee here is very strong so maybe get a latte instead if you do not like very strong coffee. There are a lot of employees working here so they are able to help many customers at the same time which was nice. The ambience is very nice and clean. First of all, the people here are NICE!! They sell a very wide and authentic variety of desserts, from baklava to turkish delight to other things I don't even know the name of. I got the baklava (WOW) and i wish i had tried the chocolate one. My dad got like all flavors of turkish delight (personally i am not a fan of gelatin-type items cuz they make my tummy hurt) and i had a small bite of pomegranate which was very tasty. The pom choco nut log thing was also quite flavorful and paired well together, even though i am not a fan of nuts (baklava not withstanding). My husband tried their turkish coffee and loved it. He said it tasted very authentic and uniquely flavored. He especially liked the sludge at the bottom (no he really did). It was very strong and boiling hot too. We ordered the rose, rasberry, nougat turkish Delight, crunchy baklava and a strawberry turkish coffee. I liked the rose out of all of the turkish delight. Very sweet and floral. Rasberry didn't really taste right for me and the nougat wasn't my thing, but it was for my date so he enjoyed that. The baklava was flaky and crunchy. The coffee was something new that we wanted to try, despite not being avid coffee people. Its $6 for 4oz (like a sample tasting cup.) Walking down the main drag in Santa Barbara, this inviting shop with its beautiful lamps and Colorful case of treats beckoned me to come in. While most of the focus is on Turkish delight, my wife noticed a so sign for halvah, which is at the back of the store. The halvah (ground sesame sweets) are beautiful here: they almost look like cakes, and so I didn't recognize them at first!! I bought a slice of Nutella Halvah and it didn't disappoint. The texture was perfect: melt in your mouth but slightly crumbly halvah filled with generous streaks of Nutella. The boxes from the shop are quite regal, and so I think this would also make a great gift. read more

There's been this meme going around on how Narnia lies about how delish Turkish Delights are. When we saw this shop, we knew we had to stop in. Neither of us had ever had a Turkish Delight and the smells lured us in. When we entered, we were greeted with a sample of the pomegranate and pistachio flavor. From that moment I was hooked. It was delicious! We looked at all the different flavors available and couldn't believe some of the combinations. The staff is so friendly and offered other samples as well. While we looked around, we decided to also give Turkish coffee a shot. It's quite literally a shot of coffee but I promise you it will do that trick! It was strong and delicious. Just don't drink the bottom unless you like the taste of mud. Dan tried it and immediately regretted it. The coffee came with another Turkish Delight! I can't remember what flavor it was but it paired so well with the coffee. Definitely swing in to experience something new. From the minute I walked in with my family, I felt like I was back in my Yiayia's (grandma's) kitchen. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful. The store is filled with food to try and evil eye keepsakes. I love it! It couldn't have been better thought out and planned. I was definitely reminded of my culture and the strong connection that I feel to it when I stepped inside. The coffee wasn't as good as the way my grandmother makes hers...although nothing may ever meet the challenge. Nonetheless, it was full of flavor and served in a perfect amount. There will always be a friendly discussion as to whether these items are Turkish or Greek but because I was raised with them in my home, they will always be Greek to me. :) Can't wait to go back! read more

Lokum is an absolutely beautiful store that sells homemade Turkish delights, the widest assortment of baklava I have ever seen, pomegranate herbal teas, etc. The owner and employees are very friendly and helpful. They greeted us and offered us free samples as soon as we walked into the store. They also explained they can ship their products to you if you are from out of town and cannot bring the treats back easily.
