Popped into this spot for a late Sunday night dinner and let me tell you all about it! My friend gang and I all used the yelp free sangria coupon which I totally recommend everyone to try if the promotion is still available by the time you are reading this. I ordered the white sangria and it was delightful. Both the red and white sangrias were the perfect amount of sweet. For an appetizer, we ordered the crabmeat tropical and this salad was LOADED with fresh avocado and the crab meat was of really great quality. Flavors were banging. We also ordered the vegetarian paella. In this case, the flavors were not banging. The dish tasted pretty flat. Not to say that we did not eat it all -because we did. Just for ~$50, I think my friends and I were expecting something a bit more magical. Let me tell you about the service though! The service was great. We were seated in just a few minutes (which was pure luck because we did not have a reservation). Our lovely waitress was attentive and helpful and everyone working was just awesome. My first thought was it is a small restaurant. We got there a few minutes before they opened but the smells wafting out of the kitchen and spilling out onto the sidewalk was making my mouth water. They make up for the small interior but expanding their seating to outside, around the corner of the building and down the sidewalk. They even have tables set up in front of the house next door. Plenty of lighting and warming lamps set up near the tables, creating a welcoming and intimate environment. There is subtle music playing in the background that is just loud enough to appreciate but not so loud that you can't carry on a normal conversation. I went with two other people and we shared plates. It was a great way to get a taste of many flavors. We started off with the ceviche, crabmeat tropical and antipasto. The ceviche had great flavor but the shrimp was a little tough. Not sure if it was made with fresh shrimp or frozen. In comparison, the crabmeat tropical was less flavorful than the ceviche but still good. The antipasto tray was superb. I ordered the fabada soup and was knocked over because it tasted so delicious! I could have ordered five more bowls. We also tried the pistolettes, little buns served with garlic butter. I could have eaten twelve more of them by myself alone. We also ordered the Pisto which is made with portabella mushrooms and vegetables, and two different paellas, meat and seafood. I like that there is different sizes of paella you can order. All three dishes were delicious and portions large enough, there was enough left over for lunch the next day. For dessert, we tried all three: flan, almond nougat ice cream and chuflan (a flourless chocolate cake). They came out on the same plate and honestly, I wish I didn't have to share. Lola's never disappoints. I've been coming here for years highly recommend squid, mussels, and shrimp. Lots of fun apps I could go back again and again and never get bored of this menu. Fresh ingredients tastes are exquisite! While the paella is the winning dish, I wasn't impressed with the paella last night. We got the veggie and seafood combo. It was kinda fishy and not something I would get again. However, the meat combo may be a better choice. I eat here once or twice a year when in town and have been an occasional customer here for at least 20 or more years. Dining alone at Lola's is usually disappointing. The service is disjointed and slow. The food is not as good as it once was. Dining with a group is preferred, yet the service is still slow. The food disappointing. We decided to try Lola's after seeing so many people on TikTok recommend it. It's such a cute space, we loved sitting outside on the sidewalk people watching. Also, the wait staff is great and checks in on you often. In terms of the food, their bread and garlic butter is such a good starter; I'd eat the butter by itself! I'm only in New Orleans for a brief visit which is a shame. I wanted to try so many things on the menu at Lola's and won't have an opportunity to sample everything. I knew before I ever left Birmingham that I wanted to eat here, though--the garlic soup called me name from two states away. I called five weeks ago to make reservations, but when I got here tonight they had no record of my reservation. Nevertheless, they seated me without any problem, apologizing for misplacing it and never doubting my word. I was worried for a moment, as I REALLY wanted to try to garlic soup. It didn't disappoint. I've had wimpy garlic soups before where I think the chef may have waved a garlic clove over the pot and that was it. This stuff is the real deal. Vampires need not apply. If I thought I could have gotten away with it I would have snuck into the kitchen and stuck a straw into the stock pot and just started sucking. When Mike, my server, brought out some bread it came not with a pat of butter, but with what I know as "toum" a garlic paste. I'm not sure what they call it at Lola's--all I know is it was more garlicky deliciousness. For my entree I had the meat fideuas The bits of chicken were a little larger than I cared for, but what the heck--that's why God made knives, right? It was well seasoned and even though i ordered the small portion, it was more than I could eat. I'm not usually a dessert person, but I had some chocolate flan for dessert--way too rich for my taste. This is a dish best shared. I wasn't able to finish it, good as it was. I was very impressed with the COVID precautions the staff embraces. We were in town visiting friends, who chose this restaurant and we had a great time! My husband had the duck, I had the pork loin, and they were both delicious! We did also get the meat and cheese board, which I personally don't think is worth $25. I didn't go inside, but we sat outside and the ambiance was just lovely and picturesque. This place is a gem in the Bayou St. John area. ​For starters, we ordered Mussels in Vinaigrette. The mussels were large and steamed in a homemade vinaigrette. I really enjoyed the flavor of the dish. We also enjoyed the bread served with Lola's famous Garlic Alioli spread. That spread was so tasty! I enjoyed the whipped flavor of it and the taste. The main course, my husband and I got Paella. He ordered the combination and I ordered the seafood. The seafood had shrimp, fish, calamari, scallops, mussels and veggies with herbs. The combination included meat and seafood paella. The paella was so flavorful and the seafood was so fresh. I really enjoyed the shrimp and fish. We had plenty to take home with us. First date night after Covid quarantine and we were craving Lola's, specifically some ceviche and paella. Lola's is being so good with providing a clean atmosphere and socially distanced tables. We went here randomly trying to find a good place for my vegetarian friend to eat at when visiting NewOrleans. When we arrived it was such a quaint little restaurant. Just a few tables inside and you can see the cooks from the tables. Very intimate ambiance. We ordered the vegetarian paella and garlic chicken. So much flavor! Its been many years since I have been to Lola, 20 +. Most likely the original owners were cooking back then. Wonderful little place that was unique in NOLA. I had been meaning to return for a long time and finally did. We went with a group of 5. The place has been updated, still small but lots of outdoor seating. We sat inside and even though it was June, it had been cloudy that day and pleasant enough to sit outside. Looking at the menu I noticed there were no appetizers under $10 and no entrees under $20. I was fine with that but thought the food better be good at those prices. I also questioned the spanish origins of some of the selections. We started with a couple of appetizers. Ceviche was good but not great. It came ofna bed of lettuce so there was little of the 'juice' let on the seafood so it was kind of bland. The sauteed mushrooms were slightly overcooked and over-spiced, too salty. Someone ordered the garlic soup and liked it very much. Someone else ordered the gazpacho and was very disappointed. Not even close to the real thing as my friend spent quite a bit of time in Spain. More like a tomato basil, thick and heavy. Things were not going well and I did not expect that to change and sure enough... We shared at least a taste of each dish around the table. The rack of lamb was ok but not worth the price. No one cared for it. The cooked pork chop was, well, a pork chop, big and thick and not bad, it was served with mashed potatoes. Not very spanish i guess but then not easy to find anything on the menu that is. The paella was average at best. Sorry to throw shade on a beloved NOLA restaurant. The placed was busy for a June evening on a Tuesday so people must enjoy it. The service is excellent and the atmosphere is great. Their combination paella is what good dreams are made of and their mariscos and fabado soups leave me wondering if they offer it in 5 gallon drum sizes. We went for the first time for my boyfriend's birthday because it came highly recommended by a coworker of his...we drove about 45 minutes to get to New Orleans and then waited about 50 minutes for a table on a Sunday night but y'all...it was so incredibly worth it. Once seated, the server was so kind (even though it was her first night on the job) and she did a fantastic job waiting on us. The glasses of red sangria were just what we needed to kick off our meal and that bread and garlic aioli...oh my gawd. Someone give me a bucket to collect this drool! I would have liked if the seafood in the ceviche were a bit more acidic and sharp, like the original ceviche is like in Peru. The calamari was interesting, as it was served as a block, and cut criss cross. Loved the flavor and texture, super on point! The seafood paella was just mouthwatering. Loved every bit of it! Lola's has a lovely ambiance and is located in a charming neighborhood near Bayou Saint John. The server was very nice. We didn't think the food was very good, though. The tortilla chips were stale, the ceviche was dry and tasted like it had been sitting in a fridge for too long. The Caesar salad lacked the anchovy flavor that makes it tasty. Then the paella.... Tiny dining room with local feel. Honestly wasn't crazy about any of the tapas so I ordered the pesto pasta and it was really good, nice and creamy. 5$ for added chicken is a bit ridiculous, though. The ambiance was amazing and the service was ok(they put us in the corner outside on a really cold night and there was water coming from next to us, maybe from bathroom or kitchen). Bugs.... Oh my! I went to Lola's a couple of months ago for a birthday party. I've put off writing a review because I hate to publish bad reviews. But, as I thought about it more, I came to the conclusion that I should write an honest review. Since it was a birthday party, there were several people at the table. It was my first time meeting some of them. I noticed a big issue with my water, but initially didn't say anything. I didn't want to make a scene and ruin the guy's birthday party. I looked around the table and saw that other people had this issue as well. I finally spoke up. There were roach legs floating in our waters. I brought it to the attention of our waitress. The only thing she did about it was get us new waters. She didn't even apologize. I have to be real here. This is New Orleans. There are roaches everywhere in this city. It is what it is. You get used to it. Don't think its something specific to New Orleans now. I've lived in other coastal Southern cities where there were issues with roaches. The problem in this situation is that the waitress did nothing about it other than bring more waters. She didn't even apologize. It would have made the situation better if she had done something about it. Maybe a complimentary appetizer, complimentary dessert, or comp the entire meal. Just do something. I ordered the Combination Paellas. The food was actually good. As I said before, I actually feel bad about writing this, but it's the truth. The waitress should have done more. read more

Lola's is a small Spanish restaurant located in Midcity. It does not get much publicity compared to other restaurants in town, but the food is excellent. I went on a Wednesday when they have half off bottles of wine, so naturally we had to take advantage of that deal. We started with the garlic brussels sprouts and crabmeat tropical. The brussels sprouts were great. I think they were a special that day. The crabmeat tropical was lump crabmeat served over a bed of lettuce with 4 crostinis and a special aioli. For my entree I shared the medium seafood paella. It was excellent! It comes with shrimp, calamari, mussels, scallops, fish, and vegetables. I highly recommend sharing paella. They can make various sizes of the dish for however many people are at your table. They have a small section of outdoor seating. The staff were very courteous and attentive.
