The one star is because the lovely lady at the checkout counter, otherwise I would wish for a zero star option. Went in for some lightbulbs and simply asked if they had NeeDohs during check out. I have an autistic 7 year old that wants one, so I just inquired if they have while paying for my bulbs. The young lady politely said no, while the extremely rude young man behind the counter rudely said NO! Its not hard to be polite, and if you dont like your job get a new one. The good: obscure in stock parts for that classic home that somehow still survives the builder grade wave of construction destruction. The bad: have you gone in and attempted to ask a question? The staff doesn't take kindly to being bothered during work hours and if you get past that wall don't think its better beyond that... it isn't. Customer service is better handled by the fumble and find it yourself technique. Which is what they tell you. And lastly. ...i get inflation and then there's ACE inflation. I don't think I'll be returning to Ace Hardware. It pays to drive the extra few minutes to Home Depot or specialist companies. I called to inquire about a Stihl product and was informed by the sales associate on the phone that is was in stock but only a floor model was available. He said they would reduce the price for me when I came in. So, I wasted my fuel to go pay them a visit in order to purchase the item. The new sales person wanted to charge me the full price for the floor model item which was covered in dust. Yeah, great sales process. Bait and switch I guess. So I drove to Kipps in Lisle and had a great customer experience and purchased the item I wanted. I recommend Kipps for your Stihl needs. Ace is NOT the place. read more

You can never change a first impression... it was the opposite of customer service! 2 employees, women, were working on a display near the door, no 'hello', 'can I help you find something?' i had to interrupt their chatter to ask where something was. As I walked around, to see if they would follow up with me, not a word. One gentleman finally asked if he could help after I was many aisles into the store. Paint, tools, parts, advice - you name it. The other day I had an old 35 mm slide viewer that wouldn't work and I brought it to Ken who said, "Corroded contacts," took a tool from his shirt pocket, scraped the contacts, and In ten minutes I'm sorting slides again. Recently called on this store to replace a potion of my Beg Green Egg which developed a small Crack. I've had the Egg for 10 years and use it quit a bit. Nick from Ace helped walk me through the warranty process (lifetime warranty for the Big Green Egg - pretty sweet) and within 2 weeks he was in my backyard replacing the broken piece. He was an all pro service provider and Ace and the manufacturer stood behind their product 100%. Helpful Employee, went out of his way. My Dad went to Ace earlier today to buy a wheel barrel... He drove his Volvo and found the product wouldn't fit. So, a very nice Ace employee tried to help, but ended up loading it in his own vehicle, and followed my Dad to our house with the purchased wheel barrel. DO NOT TRUST THIS STORE OR ITS MANAGERS IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR PRODUCTS TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM THE CORONAVIRUS. THEY ARE TRYING TO SELL YOU ANY PRODUCT THEY CAN, JUST TO MAKE MONEY. THEY DON'T REALLY CARE IF IT PROTECTS YOUR HEALTH OR NOT. I went to Len's Ace Hardware today to get supplies for the coronavirus. When I got to the counter, a male employee and the cashier were talking about how good the pandemic was for sales and they would stay open as long as stuff "kept flying off the shelves." Please be aware that they are actively promoting products that ARE NOT EFFECTIVE against coronavirus. They have stockpiled products at the cashier's counter that they know DO NOT WORK against coronavirus. I asked about these products and the cashier first told me it was a "great disinfectant." However, when I asked her specifically to tell me if they were approved for coronavirus, she eventually acknowledged that this product was totally ineffective. I spoke to both the store manager (Andrew) and the general manager (Nick Allard). They are both aware that the products they are promoting at the counter do not work against coronavirus. Nick Allard said they moved the useless product to the front of the store just because it had been discontinued. So, it seems their goal is to unload a bunch of ineffective cleaners during the pandemic to make money and get rid of old inventory, whether these products are effective or not. My take-away is that they want to capitalize on the panic and don't actually care much about the community they are serving. A really good neighborhood hardware store. Recently went there for mouse traps, leaf rake, weed killer, garden hose, LED bulb, waste pickup stickers, a packet of vegetable seeds. No problem, they even had the high-quality no-kink hoses. Other recent trips to Len's have been for stainless steel metric bolts (a car repair), replacement faucet cores, lamp repair parts, powdered wallpaper adhesive, plastic buckets, in-wall timer. Len's assortment of hardware --- meaning bolts, screws, washers, anchors, springs, little metal pieces --- is really marvelous. A whole aisle of little pull-out drawers. You won't find some of the less common faucet parts, for example, it is indeed a neighborhood hardware store. But having Len's around is great. read more

I've been to Len's Ace on several occasions. When I know specifically what I want, Len's offers a convenient stop to get what I need. But I've found that the staff tends to be a bit undertrained with the exception of a few Ace 'veterans' (staff that eats, sleep, dreams, and breaths home improvements). If you're lucky to get one of the Ace vets, you're probably going to have a good day. If not, you might be met with shrugs and 'you might want to check elsewhere'. Undoubtedly, I'll continue to go there because it's 1/2 the distance relative to the nearest big-box store. I just know not to ask the staff questions. read more

I don't want the USA to turn into the United States of Amazon, if I can help it. I had a leaky bathroom faucet and Pete took so much time with me looking at my photos and giving me advice. Another time a staff person helped me with how to paint furniture. Another time how to replace a lost knob on my nightstand. Over the weekend, The gods of snow unleashed a fury [as us local folks know] and my acre long driveway was loaded. My plow people bailed on me and left me in a lurch. I got stuck trying to get out of my own driveway this morning and knew it was time to bite the bullet and get a snow plow myself. I was terrified. I'm not good at putting things together and anything that requires gas and oil makes me unsure. I called Len's ace hardware in the aftermath of snowmageddon. Yes, they had plows in stock. Headed over, walked in, was helped by 2 men in the snow plow section. Not only did they already have multiple models assembled for me, they explained the features of each AND on the gas models, they already prep them for use. Did you hear me ladies? I'll say it again.. I was very satisfied, but I also wasn't looking to get any help. I read the earlier reviews and a lot of people seem very dissatisfied with the service or the knowledge of the staff... I experienced neither of these things, but I wasn't looking for them either. I came in here knowing what I wanted and I didn't need/want someone explaining my options to me. So I entered, read the signs, and moved fairly quickly through the store to find (and obtain) what I wanted. I was asked if I wanted help once, which I declined. At the registers I also wanted to throw out some old faucet aerators, which two staff members offered to do for me. Overall, service seemed attentive and they had what I wanted. read more

Today I walked in and had just barely gotten the 'where is everything?' look on my face when Ethan called out to me and walked me to the aisle, radioed to make sure it was exactly the strength I needed and took it from the shelf right into my hands. I've come in for various items a few times since I've worked just down the street. The service here, when you can get hold of a salesperson (it's often quite busy) is great. Everyone seems to either know their stuff very well, or knows they need to ask someone. This is far better than some places where the sales rep spins something they think they know, but really should ask someone. ;-) The prices are Ace Hardware. This is basically retail pricing, but with coupon deals which make the short trip a great value. The store can feel cramped, but is till roomy enough to walk through comfortably. When the tiny screw fell out of my electronic key to my car and everything opened up I sort of panicked. So I went in to Ace in Glen Ellyn to see if they might have a tiny screw to replace it. A nice man named David offered to help me and searched around for the correct screw. He found one that Was the right weight but too long... So he took it in the back room and cut it shorter and it worked out perfectly! I offered to pay him more than the $.65 fee for the screw... He refused to accept any more than that. David was so helpful to me and I really appreciate all the extra time he spent. read more

One star? I think it should be zero, but that wasn't an option. Holy Cow! This was one of the worst customer service experiences I have ever experienced. We turned in our Stihl weed wacker to be repaired by them 8 weeks ago. At the time, they said it would be 7-10 business days (max 2 weeks). That seemed reasonable. Although not having a weed wacker in the late spring when the grass is growing like crazy can mean a really bad looking yard. Three weeks later my husband contacted them and asked about the weed wacker progress since we had not heard from them. At first they couldn't find it and then found it and said it was at the repair shop and they were waiting for an update. Huh? We are already over by a week. We didn't hear anything. Then we called again a week later. The weed wacker needed a carborater (sp?) and it was on back order. Why didn't anyone just call to tell us that. We are now at 4 weeks. My husband continued to call to find out what was going on. Unfortunately, they NEVER called us. We had to chase them down every time. Well after 8 weeks I decided my husband's nice approach was getting us nowhere. I called and told them I didn't care if we had our weed wacker or a new one, but I better have one by the end of the day. The manager called back and said the manager of the store where it is being repaired was going to call the parts department on Monday to find out what was going on. My response was that she obviously didn't listen the first time. I had to have one by the end of the day. She said she didn't know how that was possible. I responded by saying if they didn't want to give us a new one, then why didn't they just take the part out of one of the new ones I was sure they had in stock and use that. I knew they could damage out the one in stock. Her response was "I hadn't thought of that". You think?! When she called back, she said that I was right (no kidding!) and that they would deliver it to our house by the end of the day (which was about 4:30...not like we could actually use then!) I will NEVER go back to this store. I would rather drive twice as far and pay twice as much than to ever go back to this store. It is obvious that their store is not doing well. Hmmm...I wonder why?! Perhaps they need to take some lessons in customer service. The manager continued to make excuses that they didn't know what was going on with the equipment because the shop was actually at a different store. Seriously? Are they not capable of calling over to that store and then calling us with an update. I understand about back ordered parts, but to never once be contacted to let us know what is going on with our piece of equipment is absolutely not ok. read more

I've had several very frustrating experiences at this ace. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful, but the checkout process is awful. On multiple occasions I've been charged incorrectly, especially when purchasing sale items. This has caused me to have to manually total up my purchased items from the convoluted receipt and then when wrong, go back, wait in an often long checkout line a second time. I've gotten the issue corrected each time, but with little apology from the cashier and no other compensation for my time or frustration. Bought a gas grill there and one, very helpful employee Tony found that it wouldnt fit in my small suv. He asked where I lived and he said he lived very close to me and proceeded to put it in his large SUV and delivered it to my home.--in the next 10 minutes!!!! HOW MUCH MORE SERVICE CAN YOU GET????. I frequent Len's at least 2x a month. I like to support the smaller business owners rather than the big box hardware stores. I've given Len's so many opportunities to help me but almost every time they fall short. I have asked for assistance on almost every occasion and more often than not the men on the floor have not been able to locate what I'm looking for or help me with suggestions for solving a problem. They don't call when they say they will call and on two occasions they forgot I was outside waiting for help loading mulch, which I ended up doing myself. The reason why I'm writing this is from my last experience with them 2 weeks ago. I was looking for an item and was told they were out of stock. The man on the floor took my name and number, wrote what I was looking for on an order ticket and told me they would call me when it came in. Two weeks later still no call. I went in this afternoon and the shelf was stocked with what I went in for two weeks ago. I'm to the point where I'm tired of giving them chances. My Husband thinks I'm crazy for still going to them. Honestly, I'm all for supporting the small business owner but if I get the same indifferent treatment as the big box store at a cheaper price I think I should just opt for saving more money.
