Rachel, the office manager treated us awful when they called to cancel an appointment set in the summer and could only "squeeze" us in in another 2 plus months. Their office is discriminatory towards their OHP clients and is in general horribly unprofessional. Rachel did let me know in a very ugly tone (likely because most people who qualify for OHP can't pay) that if I wanted to pay cash he could be seen. They blamed OHP because the day they booked my son is not a day they have a contracted dr working. How is that OHP's fault? Our kids qualify because of being adopted. If we were unable to pay to go elsewhere we would be stuck being treated like garbage. For all those who can't afford it too bad so sad apparently! Disgusting!!!!! Also, during our visit today Rachel and another front desk person thought discussing birth control, the pullout method and more was appropriate where the waiting area could hear. While those things in themselves are not inappropriate it certainly isn't professional. RUN don't walk in the other direction! This place is horrible!!!!! read more

This place is pretty odd - I'm honestly surprised they are in business. No one EVER answers the phone, despite my calling during normal hours. Appointments are canceled randomly; there doesn't seem to be any scheduling notes for patients; there are no reminder phone calls/text/emails for appointments. Never managed to get in to this office, so I can't comment on the dentist or staff or location. Would definitely steer clear of these folks. read more

This is the very first negative review I have ever written, but I had too as the situation was so absurd I had to call it out. I did a bunch of research and found Mellum Family Dentistry and based on the reviews and the website I decided to make an appointment. I called the office and asked if they accepted Aetna Discount Plan and was told yes. I was asked if I had any other insurance and said Yes, I have a reimbursement plan on my Aetna Medicare Advantage Plan. I made and appt for some time out and they called me the next day to say they had a cancellation if I wanted it, Yes I did and I showed up 10 minutes early. This is when the fun started; Natalie who was very sweet on the phone told me that I could not use my discount plan, but had to use the Medicare plan and pay full price. She explained that this was the protocol and further told me she checked with Aetna. I told her she was wrong, that I could use my discount plan and then I submit whatever I paid for out of pocket to Aetna and would be reimbursed up to $2,OOO. We went back and forth and then her cohort (don't recall her name) chimed in and confirmed I was wrong and they were correct. I asked to speak to the doctor and was told that was not possible! At that point I held my temper and walked out. I have learned that in the world today you must know what you are doing before doing it, or else. I had called Aetna before I bought the discount plan and they told me how it worked and I confirmed it with Aetna Medicare. What was I do do, here were these two young ladies telling me I was wrong and had no idea of what I was talking about. I left, called Aetna Medicare again to make sure I was correct, as if I was wrong (I could have been) I would go back and apologize. I was correct! I did not go back, I went elsewhere to Edelweiss Dental a few blocks from them. I never did get to find out if the Mellum Family practice would live up to its reputation, and if Dr. Mellum was a top doc. Based on the two incompetents, Natalie and ?, I went elsewhere... MORAL OF THE STORY - Don't ever tell a 77 year old man from New York he is wrong, we rarely are. but when we are, we admit it, grovel, and apologize profusely begging forgiveness and understanding. I have had some unpleasant experiences with dentists but I'm SO delighted with Lombard Smiles! I have to admit, I first chose them because they're within walking distance of my house. But what an amazing surprise: everyone -- the receptionists, the hygienists and the dentists are absolutely amazing. Welcoming, careful, thorough, gentle -- and generous. One of my crowns loosened and the dentist cleaned the tooth and cemented it back with no charge. This means a lot to someone on Medicare. They are an entire galaxy of stars. read more

Dr. Mellum was great. The new ownership is one of those places that will bill your insurance to the maximum and pop holes in your teeth unnecessarily. You will notice most positive reviews are from Mellum's time. This is no longer the case. They have had a few changes since then and the newest one is amazingly aweful as both a human and a "dentist" he might be a dental student I am unsure. The rest of the staff seems professional just avoid the guy who replaced Dr. Collins (She came after Mellum), ( I don't have the energy to find his name I'll edit if I find some) and/or getting dental work here. In my opinion this reflects poor customer service on the part of the front desk. *Update in response the the business reply: the four unanswered calls and voicemails were over the course of a two week period. Do not use this dental office. To begin with, their teeth cleanings are not satisfactory at all. The hygienist I had rushed it and was done within 30 minutes. I had plaque feeling just a few days after this too. The front office staff and office manager are very rude and not professional. They have no sympathy for patients if there is a problem or concern. As for the dentist, he will not speak with you either. They have zero regard for any customer service or great quality care you will find at other dentown offices. I've been going to this dentist office for about 3 years now . Even though they have had three or four different dentists in this time the hygienists have stayed basically the same . This time I went in for a cleaning as my insurance was running out . Every time I go in they say I need x-rays no matter what I get done and usually they have to do two sets because they messed them up. I went in for this cleaning and they said well we have to do a complete set of new x-rays and I questioned them about that and they said well maybe you're not a good fit for our office . This upset me a little bit because they told me I would be right into the appointment but actually I had to wait 30 minutes with no explanation whatsoever. I told them that I had to go to work after this and so I would like to know how long it would take and it took her 10 minutes to tell me how long it would take and I said all right I'll get the whole thing done and she went out of the office for a second and came back and said well now we don't have time because we talked for 10 minutes and so you'll have to come back another day and get the dental work done all we can do is the x-rays . I don't know what was going on and this office on this day but it must have been terrible . Their service was terrible and I won't be back . read more

Last year, we chose Lombard Smiles after our long time local pediatric Dentist retired, and we wanted to go to another dentist nearby. Our first visit did not go well. After a few minutes in the waiting room, the receptionist unapologetically claimed I was taking too long to fill out the extensive intake paperwork handed to me and we were going to need to reschedule one of our kids because of that. This didn't make any sense since our insurance had pre-approved our visit and it was my kid being seen and I could have just carried on with paperwork. However, the demeanor of the receptionist made me feel unwelcome to ask any questions. When we finally made it in at another time, the hygienist was pleasant but everyone else acted like they didn't want to be there. Fast forward to a few months ago, it was time for an annual checkup (even though they had not sent a reminder). I left a voicemail and they never responded. Husband tried the same with same results. With a change in insurance I was worried about finding a new dentist for my daughter, especially as I was told she needed extractions ASAP. At my visit with Dr. Mellum he did a very thorough exam of her teeth and determined extractions were unnecessary and the baby teeth were hardly hanging to the gum line. I called earlier to try to set up an appointment and they got me in today on a cancellation. The hygienist was awesome and gentle and gave me my first cleaning in ages. The front desk is pleasant and Dr. Mellum seems like a really straightforward guy who knows what he's doing. At this point I haven't had anything more than a cleaning/checkup, but I appreciate sound advice with no finger-wagging for past tooth-transgressions or for not being to a dentist in two years. I took my brother in and he has Autism. Dr. Mellum was patient and explained everything every step of the way. He is very thourough and does excellent work. He is highly recommended in my book. I had an emergency visit to Portland from California days after a difficult tooth extraction. Back in Cali I had an appointment for monday, to check the healing process, that I had to cancel because of the abrupt nature of my visit. After my stitches started to fall out, I called my doctor back home letting them know my situation, they wanted to schedule a visit. Even though I said I was in Portland. Today I had to get a crown mold for a previous bad tooth I had fixed by another dentist. I dislike the dentist like most people. His assistant Kristi (I think) was so sweet and chatted with me making me feel more comfortable before he came in. Dr Mellum made sure I was numb and comfortable before he kept going. I like he kept checking on me and also explained every detail. I don't remember that from others. It was also nice that they worked well together passing tools around he didn't even have to ask she knew the tool he needed. Oh also it was nice and cool inside being it was 95 outside (have to add that :). I can say overall I had a good experience at this office. Since it had been over a year since my last teeth cleaning, I checked out reviews on Yelp for various dentists around Portland. My husband had a rather poor experience with a dentist office downtown so I was uber cautious when searching for a dentist. After reading the good reviews on Dr. Mellum I decided to make an appointment. Dr. Mellum and his hygienist exceeded my expectations. Dr. Mellum, his hygienists, and office staff were wonderful! Everyone was kind and caring. The hygienist thoroughly cleaned my teeth for almost 1 hour! No joke. She explained that just below my gum line (a place not all hygienists clean...aka my previous hygienist) there was a build up of plaque that had hardened into calculus or tartar. Run, don't walk to ANOTHER dentist. I first started going to him at the end of 2017, it took until January 2017 to get my first appointment. At the time, I had a tooth that had broken off. It was not causing me any pain, and by the time I got into see Nick the sharp points of the tooth that were cutting my tongue had worn away. He looked at the tooth and then decided that nothing needed to be done. I was fine with that. He filed 1 or 2 cavities OK, and did teeth cleaning until June of 2020 when all of a sudden that broken tooth became infected. Overnight my whole face swelled up, my throat was sore and I could not eat. I called the emergency number, and NO ONE returned the call. First thing Monday I called, and they did get me right in. But, I was on a common blood thinner. I had stopped taking this on SATURDAY as I knew I was going to having dental work. But, Nicky refused to do any work with an authorization from by cardiologist. He said he faxed then a release form. I sat in the chair, in pain for over an hour when he told me the office did not respond and I had to leave, WITH NO TREATMENT. My cardiologist NEVER got a fax. The next day, I went to another dentist, who said that blood thinner has a 12 hour 1/2 life (makes sense as I take it twice a day), and if you have been off it for 12 hours it will not be a problem. He removed the tooth in 10 minutes, with NO issues. I have been going to this dentist now for over a year, and boy what a difference. THEY CALL me to schedule cleaning, etc. Mellum never ONCE called. The new dentist actually uses email, imagine that. I get a call or email reminder of an appointment, and is NOT an asshole, like Nick - plus they are competent and know what side effects of common drugs are, unlike Nick. Again, find a different dentist... read more

I had my first appointment today and appreciated the level of engagement the staff had with patients. The receptionist, hygenist and Dr. Mellum explained both the good and not-so-good aspects of my teeth and what we would need to do to fix the bad stuff. It was important to me that Dr. Mellum and his staff give me honest guidance on a couple of issues and they gave it without me asking. To me this is a sign of a well organized and educated staff. Went to see Dr. Mellum last week after having a tooth crack. He got me in on short notice and was able to see me early in the morning, which was essential for my work schedule, which is rather inflexible. Was expecting the worst and some admonishment since I hadn't been to the dentist in several years, but he was direct and just told me a few things I needed to do better. He fixed the cracked tooth and found another cavity, took care of that too, did a quick cleaning and I was gone. Perhaps I'd avoided the dentist because of the pain and discomfort I've experienced in the past, but Dr. Mellum was gentle and the ordeal really wasn't an ordeal. I've already scheduled another cleaning and will recommend him and his staff to anyone who asks. read more

Update; Sabrina is also really good at teeth cleaning. I did not even need shots & was pleasantly surprised how easy it was on me. Got my 2 molars pulled....Dr. Mellum does a pretty good job with the shots, I was especially relieved the roof of the mouth shot was not even close to as uncomfortable as my last dentist, only a little bit. I chose pills over gas & they at least kept me from chickening out, but gas makes for a better frame of mind, I think, because I was still pretty scared. I could have easily driven home, they didn't make me sleepy at all. Dr. Mellum was good about letting me know what he was doing & why, which I liked very much. And he made sure I was numb, not stingy with the novocaine. He encouraged me by telling me 'almost done' as he rocked my poor tooth back & forth to loosen it. Pretty good technique, I thought. Not as violent & traumatic as other pullings I've had. Plus no pieces broke off which was a first for me! And, props to Natalie at the desk & the dentist who squeezed me in the next day when I freaked out about waking up with no blood clots in my holes....must have swallowed them in the night.... I was afraid of dry socket getting me, but I'm fine. It's been over a week & today's the first day I've been able to skip my Tylenol 3's & just do plain tylenol, but that's not their fault; those were giant teeth with substantial roots. So, in closing; if you're scared about getting dental work done, come here. Everybody I've been in contact with has been interesting, nice, good sense of humor, careful, respectful & very competent. They are good with shots & cleanings. And it feels so good not to keep worrying about getting it done & knowing that waiting is just making it worse. read more

today i had my first appointment with dr. nick mellum. when i first saw him i was concerned. he is very young. i am guessing that he is the son of dr. michael mellum. the dentist i had had since i was knee high to a grasshopper had turned his office over to his son and i was not happy with him. but i found dr. nick to be very gentle and kind. he explained the situation with my teeth and seemed to be very concerned about doing the job correctly. today he was fixing a tooth that had a cavity but was also broken and looked horrible when i smiled. it was my main concern for this visit. he put some dentist type thingy in my mouth and after two tries found he did not like the way it was working so he changed to a different thingy. ...stop me if i am going over your head with my techical jargon... i suppose he could have proceeded with the equipment that wasn't not quite working and just got on with it rather than making sure it was really right. i was impressed with this and i took it as him being concerned with doing it correctly and turning his new patient into a regular patient. the receptionist was not the regular one but i found her to be very nice and helpful. my contact with the hygienists was limited but they did seem to be quite nice and worked well with the dentist. she was good with the little vacuum. the office is nothing fancy, which is a-ok with me. i would prefer my dollars go toward repairing my smile rather than for fancy 'feel-good' items to divert my attention from actually being in a dentists chair. so if you are in need of flat screen televisions, surround sound stereo headphone and/or a soothing koi pond, this might not be what you are looking for. but if you are looking for a new dentist who seems to care about you and will give you all the options regarding your teeth not just the most expensive ones, i would suggest you check out dr. nick. i want to thank nick b. for his review. without it, i would not have tried this dentist. i have another appointment scheduled with this office in mid june and will update my review then. read more

Dr. Mellum and his team are fantastic - he is both incredibly smart and so gentle and kind. When my old dentist wasn't at all moved by my worry about what looked like a suspicious growth in my mouth, Dr. Mellum and his team got me in as the first appointment the next day; he could immediately tell what it was (a simple bone growth vs. the old dentist believing it was an infection), and he is the first dentist -- maybe even health professional across the board -- who sat down with me and went online to show me what it was, Google images and all! I was so touched by the compassion both from him and his team that I switched that day and have never looked back! And repeatedly, this office continues to go out of their way to help me - my initial appointment has not been the only time where other medical professionals have failed when I was in need, and Dr. Mellum and his team have stepped up to save me.
