I was in Lone Pine staying overnight after summiting Mt. Whitney the morning before. I'm from LA/Valencia area and am pretty spoiled with good iced mocha options. So I was a little leery that I would find good coffee in Lone Pine. I googled coffee for lone Pine and saw Lone Star Bistro. Their iced mochas are ON PAR with any in LA! The gal there was so nice and patient with me asking about beef jerky for sale, etc. Really a darling establishment with fun locals hanging out. It's a good place to stop but I wish I'd been there in the morning to try the coffee everyone commented on. Instead I got there in the afternoon and got a pot of English breakfast and it was no good; the tea leaves seemed odd, maybe old or something and I couldn't even drink it. It was a Saturday but there was only one person working the counter so it was a long wait to get anything; you had to either wait awkwardly in a cramped queue for ten minutes or go next door the the other espresso joint. Just opened on July 2, 2010. I love a great espresso shot and the Lone Star Bistro knows how to pull one. The shots are true doppio. The shot oozes from the porta-filter full of flavor and body. Not the typical 10 sec 4 ounce americano shots one typically finds at local espresso businesses. The staff here has been trained by, and use beans roasted by, the Black Sheep espresso in the back of Spellbinder of Bishop Books. When traveling I'm always looking for a good espresso shot and mostly never finding it. It's pleasure to have a business in my own town that lives up to my demands. If you're traveling between Los Angeles and Mammoth then the Lone Star Bistro can provide that eye opener you might need. Or just a great shot of espresso! read more

How do you screw up making a turkey sandwich? For the answer to that question, you'll have to confer with the employees at Lone Star Bistro. The sandwich menu looked interesting and the options were mind boggling. The whole-wheat ciabatta roll sounded promising until I bit into it and realized that it was stale. The turkey was rubbery and processed. Since they only had French's yellow mustard (yech) the only way to make the sandwich tolerable was to slather it in mayo and chase it with a soda. There is nothing fresh or homemade about anything here. Which might be fine if you just came down from Mt. Whitney and have been eating freeze dried food all week. But there are better options in Lone Pine, I will take up one of the other reviewers on her DARE any day of the week. The worst part of the whole experience had to be the service. We got the impression that they were doing us a favor by letting us eat at their establishment. We weren't sure if it was because we weren't locals, or maybe they weren't expecting customers, or maybe that's just the "charm" of this place. But I figured it out a few hours later, I'm pretty sure they were all baked. What other excuse could there be for the employee who took (literally) 5 minutes to make another customer a cup of tea while I was standing on the other side of the counter holding a $20 bill, trying to close out the bill, not even being acknowledged. When I spoke up he abruptly informed me that was in the middle of making cup of tea, I would have to wait. It was then that another employee informed me that we could pay after we ate. You'd think they could have told me that while I was standing at the counter for 5 minutes holding my money? Yep, totally baked. This may be a great coffee or ice cream joint but if you want lunch in Lone Pine there are better options. Skip it. read more

Food quality is five star all the way. Service is two star. The service there really is as bad as people say, but I still go there because their deli sandwiches are well priced (about $6), generous in size, and first rate. You can tell the owner takes great pride in the place, as it is always clean as a whistle and has great atmosphere. There are signs all over with humourous sayings on them. But he and his staff seem grumpy and indifferent when placing your order. Not sure why the disconnect...it's a shame because he really has a great place there. The place is adorable with good hiker juju and lots on the menu. Not too healthy options, but options and ice cream parlor. Go-to spot for groovy atmosphere and wifi... EXCEPT... Ive been coming here for years and they only just started blasting Fox news. Why would they even have a TV in that place? Its a coffee shop and eatery, not a car lot or hospital waiting room. And why is it blasting? When did they even start using a TV in there? I dont remember it being there before... seemed to correspond with the Trump election. I think theyre trying to convert people as they come i, otherwise why would it be so loud. Creepy. Its not like being converted to Jesus or vegetarianism at some colorful spot. Its more like going into a mechanic shop where the mechanic blasts agro metal music, looks u up and down without saying anything, talks to their good ol boys and then walks away. If I wanted bad Americana vs nature loving Sierras, Id go to every other place in town. Who put up all the old photos and groovy twinkle lights if theyre not trying to project a cozy environment with respect for the pioneering past? What about John Muir says Fox News, outside of the near preposterous assumption that "shooter at Fox station quotes National Park defunding as cause."? Maybe its creepy because folks live under the shadow of Manzanar. Maybe its because the Inyo jail is so close and people work there. I guess what the locals say is true; Lone Pine is the scary place, Bishop is the safe haven. Too bad, it had such potential. read more

Interesting coffee shop in the middle of town, also offers a variety of food services and souvenier items. Stopped for a hot tea and coffee, there were plenty of selections to rival Starbucks. What I can't compare them to is the service. I don't know why but it just seemed difficult to place the order, and the lackluster attitude did nothing for me as far as feeling welcomed to spend my money there. Yes the beverages are good here, better than stopping into a fast food joint. Just don't expect a warm greeting or great service. We took our drinks and quickly left. read more

Stopped here for a coffee on our drive home from mammoth. Not worth it. The WORST customer service. I worked in food service for 15 years and often give people the benefit of the doubt when I receive bad service. But never have I witnessed the level of RUDE that I did at this establishment. Makes me sad that people actually choose to show up in the world spreading anger and words of hate. The woman behind the counter called my boyfriend an A**hole. This was in response to him letting her know that their coffee was lukewarm. We returned our coffee and got our money back. I've never returned coffee before today but I refuse to support a business that clearly doesn't value people. On the way out, the woman behind the counter called him an A**hole again. I find it weird that there are so many bad reviews here... yes, it's a teeny tiny town, and the store is cluttered with items for you to purchase. They have to support themselves year round. Get over it. I made a pit stop here after a few days at Mammoth. My BF ordered an iced latte and it tasted fresh and creamy. We shared the lone pine charmer sandwich, and it was sooooo good. I'm lactose intolerant, and most sandwiches are really plain without cheese. The charmer was packed with fresh sprouts, cucumbers, tomatoes, and an artichoke spread that really rounds it out. The bread was soft, and the bacon was crispy. I would definitely return for the sandwich. read more

Every time I pass through line pine on a camping or climbing trip, this is a pretty darn good coffee shop (best on the area, in my opinion until you get to Bishop). I've had a donut and it's pretty good as well. The whole shop is a pretty cool little place to stop to grab souvenirs or road trip essentials. Grab an ice cream or other grub to go, get a map of trails or a postcard to send home. read more

The lady who took my order was rude. She acted like my order was ridiculous and annoying. Then when she passed my order on the the drink maker she acted annoyed with my order. Very good espresso and teas. Coming from LA with high standards for iced mochas and specialty espresso this place is a great stop.

We have been here several times over a two year period. Obviously if we weren't so desperate for some espresso we wouldn't have come back. The coffee is mediocre but the atmosphere is absolutely terrible. Nothing to wreck your day first thing in the morning like grumpy angry staff making your coffee while the giant TV is blaring like minded angry news program. Skip it and head up to Bishop where there are two lovely coffee roasters plus the excellent Pupfish Cafe where you can get great coffee and breakfast, or Starbucks if you are so inclined. We gave the Lone Star Bistro multiple chances to stop providing their customers with a terrible experience, but they just never change. read more

This is one of my favorite places in town to go grab a cup of coffee, a fancy drink, or a sandwich. Highly recommend going there if you're in need of a caffeine boost. The staff is really nice and friendly and always greet me when I come in. I find myself craving their coffee more than Starbucks and I think they have a much higher quality. The only thing good about this place is the availibity of ice cream and serving. The place is family owned so you will see the same workers there all the time and it sucks because the customer service is shitty most of the time. Sitting at my desk at home, drinking the espresso I just made, I smiled and just had to leave this place a review. I even took the trouble to create this account to leave this place some words of praise. I know my coffee and this place rocks. They make excellent espresso. It's a locally roasted brand of coffee. The roast was perfect, the ground perfect, the pull perfect, the crema perfect, an unexpected sweet aftertaste of really fresh coffee and all this in a pretty demitasse cup. I liked the coffee so much I ended up buying a pound of the beans...and that's what caused the blissful smile a few minutes ago. Stopped here for espresso and it was very bitter/overburnt - worse than Starbucks. However, they have lots of loose leaf blended tea selections that are delicious. Also, lots of cheap pastries and decent deals for breakfast croissants and bagels. Free WiFi and newspapers. Selection of ice cream and shakes looks good, but I have not tried it. Yet. read more

We stayed in the Lone Pine area for a weekend and went here twice. On both occasions, the female assistants behind the counter were a grouchy mess. One of them was munching away on food behind the counter while taking coffee and smoothie orders. The other grouchy husky girl was obviously not a fan of all the tourists/campers in the shop when she said, "You can tell it's October again". Well, I have a newsflash for you. Without customers passing through your angry shop, you wouldn't have a job given the fact the 200 or so locals wouldn't keep this place in business. Stopped in to order an ice tea, waited about 5 minutes while the man behind the counter just stood there opening mail without saying a word to us. The owners seemed to be in a bad mood each time we came in , by other reviews I know that it wasn't just my imagination. I guess when you have the only coffee shop in town you can be rude and treat paying customers rudely. I would imagine if a Starbucks opened up in town their attitude would change or risk losing business. They really need to learn to be a little more cheerful. read more
