This is for the review for the graduation. The graduation was fine, but I am not sure why schools always do last minute changes for graduation?!!! The school is torturing students! The weather news said "we were not suppose to be outside in 105 degrees weather, but the school decided to change the graduation location at the last minute!!! They should have separated the majors on different days for the graduation, so we did not have to wait long!!! Many people waited long with sun in their faces!! They should have had solar panel at the stadium or host it inside!! A lot of people got sun burnt! There was no water fountain near the bathroom!! Furthermore, the graduation was okay. There is ample parking because there are several parking structures. I was in Building T. The classrooms were modern with technology already embedded inside the classroom. Horrible so-called institution of education. People that work at this facility get a hefty paycheck just to sit around and do nothing. It is sucking dry tax revenue and funneled directly into their pockets, but the output is trash. Cashier's Office: The Karen (really named Karen no kidding!) is completely rude and needs training on customer service. Called in one-time to kindly ask a question and she snapped because she was impatient arguing over the phone and said she had to get home. So unprofessional. All she had to do was nicely and calmly answer without the personal excuses. It's like she didn't want to help. She became defensive and upset rather than solving the problem. The woman that hands out the food voucher at the cashier's line also needs to smile. She always looks upset and hates her job. I'm sure she makes decent money just to sit around. Also, make sure they don't charge you all the extra fees you don't even use or need. They'll charge you the additional fees without saying anything. I always ask them to remove it every semester. Staff/Faculty: Lazy and incompetent teachers. You're better off somewhere else. At least the ones I've had here for 2 straight years were all lazy, condescending, rude, and useless. I had to file a complaint on one teacher who had bad communication skills when I was in the ER/hospital for surgery. The teachers here NEVER answer emails, they talk down to you like you're beneath them, they lack communication skills, and are very RUDE. One time I asked a professor who I was trying to add, and he became very arrogant in his responses and was overly aggressive in tone for no reason. He was on a power trip. I have no idea why most of the teachers here are even working. They make beaucoup bucks without having to lift a finger. No one answers emails or questions, they put up automated assignments on Canvas and then go on vacation. Basic Needs Department: The staff members are also incompetent. They need more training on follow-ups and how to effectively communicate better. They don't respond to emails, and when it is too late, they say you're out of luck and try again next semester because their resources have all been allocated or exhausted. They never replied to any of my messages and when they did, their excuse was they were too busy and understaffed. It wasn't until their director was notified when they answered. I couldn't get a hold of anyone by phone or email. Reaching them was nonexistent. THE WORST DEPARTMENT OF THEM ALL: Financial Aid Office: Every semester is a struggle. They made my life a living hell here. EVERY SEMESTER there was an issue. It seems they were targeting me and singling me out for no apparent reason just to bully me because of a misunderstanding on one occasion. There was always an issue, and they always came up with a problem they needed me to fix every single time. There was always something wrong with my account even when I submitted EVERYTHING they asked for, and did them correctly. There was always something new. I felt discriminated against from this department. Whoever works in this department are all useless. The whole department is INCOMPETENT AND RUDE. They NEVER REPLY, and when they do, it is short automated answers, and condescending responses. Quick and short, as if they want you to figure it out on your own. NO HELP WHATSOEVER. They also don't respond by email sometimes if they don't want anything on record but call instead to eliminate any paper trail or proof. THEY ARE VERY SNEAKY. They are not friendly at all. They are all stuck-up and snooty, like you're begging them for money. It doesn't even come from their own pockets but acting like it does. Very entitled and on a power trip. Oh, did I mention they NEVER ANSWER OR RESPOND TO EMAILS? Even after multiple times of reaching them, they deliberately ignore it over and over. They are there to make your life more difficult, rather than wanting you to succeed. Mind you, all these funding comes from the students' enrollment. Without us, they would not have any jobs. They receive grants and financial aid funding the school education system which is filtered through their pockets first before we can even touch the money. By the time it gets to our needs, almost crumbs are left to split amongst the needy students. It gets to the higher head of departments first, then everybody else....all the way down to whatever remains to be allocated between the bottom feeders like us (students). Their grant system is also screwed up. They'll make you repay grants awarded to you and revoke them and charge your account without consent. This school has no concern for its students and will lead you astray each and every time. The counselors are inadequate, they make up unnecessary charges and goodluck trying to get any communication from any of their departments. From a homeless students perspective, I have been told someone from ADMINISTRATION DOES NOT NOT LIKE TO SIMPLY LOOK AT ANOTHER STUDENTS RV, why? Does the view of THEIR RV remind you of the failure your establishment makes? Consider the percentile of graduating students, it is far below the average percentile. I will admit I have had some absolutely phenomenal professors here but the way they treat struggling students when it comes to financially underprivileged and homeless students is atrocious. I am still trying to figure out why it is acceptable to someone in administration to say they don't don't want to look at an RV in their view of their office when it comes down to the fact that a student lives in said RV. I hate to leave this review, but students need to know what is going on with one professor in this college. If you are a female, please be very, very careful of one professor that is on the business teaching. He likes to make fun and humilate then put down females in a way that will make you leave the class. Unfortunately personal in charge told me that they can not do anything because he is the only person teaching the class. And they can not discipline him. It's disappointing that they really advertise that they want students to succeed but can't back it up with the help. I understand during off semester that hours are different and there is less staff. However, my days off are Friday and Saturday, and I can't see a counselor due to my work schedule. My time schedule doesn't work with the video sessions they offer and when I've rushed after work I always get turned away because they're already booked up or done for the day (I've tried quite a few times and their hours say til 6 and I'm turned away at 4:30?) it's a shame that I have to wait until the semester starts to get the appropriate help I need; when I wanted to resolve the issue I have BEFORE the semester starts. I'm going into my Second Semester at {LAC} Campus. This is basically my Second home. I like almost everything about this campus minus the cats. The Professors I have had were very Supportive and Motivated me to never give up once things get Challenging. The parking here is Crazy! I usually get on campus early just to get a good parking spot. And when I say early I mean around 6:30am because by 7:30am all of the good parking is packed. Everyone in life should continue to boost their Knowledge. Four stars for the bunnies! This campus is yet another wonderful part of Long Beach. I like the monthly flea market/antiques show they host in the parking lot, the fireworks for Fourth of July, and the practical classes they offer at night. I've only taken two (Jewelry/Metalsmithing and Spanish,) but they've been so great that I intend to take more. LBCC offers the usual UC transferrable subjects, of course, but they also have personal enrichment and vocation options. The people in these classes are diverse, from all walks of life, so you never feel out of place. The buildings are old in a good way: lots of Spanish charm. Plus, I've got friends who teach there. So for me, LBCC is a little bit of everything: a local employer, provider of education, community center, and purveyor of bunny-loving grass! read more

I went here briefly and I had so many amazing teachers here. The facilities are outdated and the school doesn't look that great on the outside, but the great teachers I encountered here made the experience worth it. I'd like to give a special shout out to these following professors: Accounting 1A w/Verma Art 41 w/Corral CAOTC w/Carbonaro English 3 w/Carrie Haddix Economics 1+2 w/Jennifer Bailly: She is the best teacher I encountered at LBCC. I had zero interest in economics before I took her class. I took econ 1 with Beebe and dropped it because I didn't understand the material. Taking econ with Professor Bailly actually made it possible for me to truly understand the subject and its applications. I got A's in both classes! The parking is decent. Sometimes you'll have to walk a bit but at least you can always find a parking spot. I also took night classes here and I always felt safe, even when I walked back to the parking lot in the dark. There's usually security roaming around and the area isn't ghetto. I can't say the same for the students, but the area is fine. I did encounter a lot of immature kids fresh out of high school, but you'll find that at any community college. Your education is what you make of it. If you seriously want to learn, find the right professors, study hard, and you'll do well here. Whenever I had questions about transcripts, prerequisites, and signing up for classes, I found the office staff helpful and friendly. I always got the classes that I needed and I was directed to the right people when someone didn't know the answer. And yeah, the bunnies are pretty adorable... read more

Community college is supposed to be accessible to the general public. Although LBCC is a public school, the administration makes it just about as difficult and vague and tedious of a process as possible. Phone wait times are cuh-raaaaaay-ZEE. Bunnies. Bunnies. BUNNIES. Everywhere, all the time, and they're fat and imposing and not skittish at all. You WILL be having to move out of their way, because they won't move out of yours. This has been going on for years and years and is sort of a charming part of LBCC. There are just as many bunnies as students on campus at any given moment, and it's comical. Social life and opportunities on-campus are also a plus. In general, the culture here is very chill, very live-and-let-live. There are constantly scouting events, some subtle and some not, so if you have any desire to be on a t.v. show or in a movie, or a part of some experiment or prank or whatever, you don't have to look very hard...it'll be just as likely that you'll get approached first. Parking lots (of which there are several, including a five-story complex), on top of the fact that you have to pay for a new sticker every semester, are ill-equipped to handle the volume of cars that LBCC needs to host. In addition to having to leave wiggle room for everyday traffic, I vividly remember having to leave additional room on top of that for the parking lot circling. The one great thing this school had going for it was/is a big handful of the instructors. I had a few that made a positive, lifelong impression on me, and I'm grateful for that. I've been taking classes here for 3 years. I took a leap year, which is a one year break from school. The professors are friendly and reasonable. They offer a variety of classes to take, year-time round. You will be lucky if you find a nice staff member that works here. Most of them give me attitude and I know I'm not the only one. Still a complete dump. -No one in staff answers their phone even when it specifically says their hours are until later. -You have to physicially be there for anything and even then a lot of them are biased, racist, and judge you according to how you look -Alot of counselors are lazy and don't give a f--. I've worked and attended several colleges and this one has the most UNREASONABLE allocation between staff and student parking. I drove around 5 different lots and there were only a few parking spots for students while there were rows and rows of staff parking. I asked a parking attendant why so many staff spots and he said "we have a lot of staff" and I pointed to the rows of empty staff parking spots. He did a "whatever" shrug and walked away. It's pretty clear that students aren't the priority at this college. I am attending an art class here and I find it annoying that it takes me at least 30 minutes to find a parking spot or have to park blocks away and walk over with all of my supplies. Mind you, I paid for a parking permit. It's a shame, because the instructors seems great, but I don't know if I'll keep attending this school. read more

When it comes to solving issues regarding transferring to a four year university - the staff at admissions and records are the slowest at resolving issues. Having done everything they have asked me to do on time, I was expecting for them to do the same when it came to handling all paper work. It took me a total of 6 visits to actually interact with someone and explained to me on how to solve my issue. The lady who helped me was nice and she took the time to explain the paper work and that I will be seeing the results in the next following days. When I went, there was one lady working at admissions and records while the line of students was out the door. It all depends on who the worker is helping you - they either know exactly what to do or just give you a phone number/email to call which resolved nothing in my case. Come early to avoid the lines and to hopefully get the proper help you deserve. Being there is a cut off to apply for universities, the admissions and records office seem to not care and do things on their own time. If you need important paper work done quickly before applying to universities- my suggestion is to do it a semester before, otherwise you might miss the deadline due to their slowness. read more

I have been attending LBCC for a year now, and at first I was thinking about transferring to Cypress or Fullerton. When you compare this school to others such as LA Pierce and Harbor College, I found myself extremely grateful for the choice I made to stay here at Long Beach. The registration systems for schools in the Los Angeles Community College Districts are sooooo PRIMITIVE and SLOW! The classes that I have taken are challenging and you new students who are serious about school should enroll in Counseling 1 because it truly helps students understand the ways on how to succeed at LBCC.Because of this school I will be transferring to UCLA by Fall 2015. When I initially entered this college, I had so many reasons to be frustrated with this school, but the teachers and campus changed my entire outlook. In every community college there are immature students, and it is hard to get that perfect schedule when you are a freshman, BUT THINGS GET BETTER. I have friends at El Camino and they are planning on transferring to LBCC. This college is sandwiched in between the Lakewood mall and the Long Beach Towne Center (Cerritos and Stonewood are also not too far away). One of my best friends lives right across the street from Harbor College, and she comes to LBCC. My initial experience here was horrendous because I was waitlisted for all of my classes and my financial aid was late. I went through my hardships, and I am not exactly sure if they were worth it because I am not sure if I would have had this same experience at another school. All I can say is that with the proper school orientated mentality and patience you can succeed at LBCC. read more

I took 8 classes at Long Beach City College in 2 semesters and 6 of them were fantastic and 2 of them stunk. I'd avoid taking any class taught by Christina Guillen or Cindy Frye. Both are out-of-touch, older ladies who want you to do lots of dumb busy work. They don't care if you try hard or have perfect attendance. They grade exceptionally hard even when they hardly teach anything and they are poor teachers. Cindy Frye thinks magazines are gods when in reality they're a waste of paper and ink and going the way of the dinosaur. Being an older lady, she is stuck in the past and hasn't caught up with the times. Her freelance writing class requires a stupid art project where you cut out all sorts of articles from magazines and decorate a folder. It's nonsense and a total waste of time and the same information could be learned and applied better a different way. It doesn't help anyone become a better freelance writer. One time I asked her a question about the chapter she was teaching and she didn't realize it was on a page just little later in the chapter. This indicated to me she wasn't prepared and didn't really know the material. She was just reading it to us and making it up as she went along. Cindy Frye charges $30 for a comb bound book that is just a collection of photocopied pages. She said she put copies in the library, but they didn't make it in the library for a couple of weeks. She said we could simply use that copy to study for tests, but she had an open book final exam and everyone who didn't buy it suffered on the final without it. The library won't let you leave the library with it. Some classes at LBCC are only offered once a year and not every semester. This makes taking or retaking them and graduating promptly a challenge. Pat McKean is an excellent and inspiring journalism teacher and so is Mr. Epley (English), Mrs. Luca (music) and Mrs. Stillwell (journalism). McKean let me know about an internship opportunity and now I'm an intern writer at a local paper. The campus is beautiful and the students are diverse and interesting. The lunch room needs a total upgrade, though. The campus has WiFi all over, so that's good. Some of the buildings were built recently. Overall it was a good experience, but the two teachers I mentioned first don't "cause you to learn", which is the definition of teaching. They treat the class like it's high school or some kind of popularity contest, especially Cindy Frye. They put themselves ahead of the subject matter and simply don't have a high standard for excellence. The newspaper adviser Chris Viola barely knows what he's doing and he doesn't work very hard. He wasn't around about half the time I needed him and when he was around, about half the time he either didn't know how to help or he acted like he was too busy. Constant breaks. Aloof. Leaving for food and coffee all the time, etc. My laptop, wallet and passport were stolen out of my backpack when I left it in the men's bathroom across from the news room for one hour. I made a report with the police, but I never heard from them, again. Not one person in the entire journalism department seemed to care or want to investigate, which is a little odd for real, aspiring journalists. While I enjoyed writing for and editing the newspaper, it often focused on topics I wouldn't focus on and avoided more important topics. I didn't really say anything, but I figured I should say something here, in case you were considering this school. The writing level was low and frequently contained numerous errors. Also, some of the writers or editors sometimes purposely injected mistakes into the paper, like misspelling the name of the editor-in-chief or misspelling a writer's name or a word in the title of their article. They would do this right before publishing, so 5,000 copies were published incorrectly. I don't know if they thought it was funny or if it was malicious, but it was foolish and childish. I valued the relationships, although some of the people (girls in particular) were divisive and immature. Some just acted like kids and liberals with no clue and no good reason. Some just wanted silly awards and I was a copy editor and I know the people who wrote and received some of the awards and it made me not want to receive an award at all. When someone who doesn't really know how to write very well gets an award for excellence, it devalues the entire award system and discourages people who actually work hard and write well. The parking situation is poor. If you don't buy a parking pass, you have to park about a mile away from school. There are residences much closer, but they forbid you to park on those white curbs. Also, I got a jaywalking ticket on my first day of school for crossing the street before the light turned green. They say you don't have to pay a health fee if you use prayer for healing, but they don't honor it. read more

For someone who didn't know what I wanted to peruse as a career after high school, LBCC has helped me open my eyes to a vast number of courses that have helped me spark interest in learning. When I first arrived I was still undecided, but after some research and looking around, I decided to take on a career in psychology. The majority of teachers here are willing to help u succeed and push you to move forward. Some teachers have gone the extra mile to show us more than what the classroom can teach, coaching me about real life and how the things we learn in class can be applied to the real world. I've had an awesome experience here at LBCC, the staff, the counselors, they all helped me keep myself in track to transfer to a university. Great place overall! read more

I where do I start..... LBCC is going down hill fast. The administration are a bunch of rude and condescending people. You ask them a question about anything, they will talk to you like you're a toddler. I honestly hate calling to ask a question because I think they are trying to suck my soul out of me through the phone. Do they know they'll be unemployed without us? The entire administration either needs to be fired or trained on how to interact with people. The students are what you expect at a community college. I have been in classes with loud mouths who are only there for the financial aid and people who can barely read or write (in English 1). It's annoying to be in classes with these people. They are taking up space for people who want to learn and advance in life. I think the community college system needs to find a way to move those people out (instead of the unit cap). It'll make the learning environment better. The construction on campus is annoying. How long does it take to fill a hole and put down grass?! It's an eye sore and I do not feel safe walking around it at night. There are a lot of dark spots along the auditorium. I'm investing in pepper spray and a taser (so creeps beware!). The campus as a hole isn't safe. There are reports of girls being raped and attacked in campus restrooms and countless thefts. The school needs to stop worrying about how nice the campus looks and how safe their students are. read more

Fast forward to 2021.... I graduated from the LVN program in 2007. Unfortunately, I still have occasional flashbacks from the RN program, which I failed out of. Dreams (nightmares) of the events. Here are examples of (some) of the events. 1) (2nd half of first semester) I gave the the wrong pills to the wrong patient, told to go home. RN on staff actually handed the pills to me from her pocket, but I was so nervous that day, I totally f'd up. Patient was fine, btw. Just antibiotics. 2) Showing up for a final at school on the wrong day, crying to my car. 3) Feeling the instructor staring at me during a test, in the big room, like she thought I was cheating or something. 4) The last straw. Drawing up a med. in pediatrics. I knew it was not right, but handed it to the teacher anyway. She said "we have a problem". That was the end of my RN program. I was actually glad it was over. Luckily, they let me transfer to the LVN program and finish. There were many, many other instances from my stressful endeavor in "nursing school". My advice: DO NOT try RN nursing school if you have no previous medical experience. read more

I have had the WORST time trying to take the typing test they offer on a Saturday. I have tried for over a month. Not only did the parking permit not print a receipt twice (I will be arguing the charges on my card) no one answers the phone ever! The main line has an option for an operator but when you select it it says that's not an option. Had to make a few random selections until I finally got an actual person. She was nice but even she had trouble trying to find the right number for me to call the actual lab. NO ONE ANSWERS THE PHONE. I've called various weekday days at different times and no answer. The voicemail is someone named "Renee" who does not return calls. Yes, I checked the number when I finally found it on the website after typing it in Google. Now two weekends in a row there is some sort of notice that the center is not doing the test. First week there was a sign that the test would not be until Monday 2/25. Okay fine, campus opened again two weeks ago maybe they're just strict about being exactly two weeks. Now today 3/2 there's a sign that it's closed and will open Monday. I wouldn't be so incredibly annoyed if someone could actually tell me that over the phone! I'm not a student, I'm driving over an hour because they don't charge and there are none in my area that do these specific requirements. read more
