One hour is plenty of time to go and come back but beware you'll probably get tired if you're not used to cycling! It seems simple and carefree enough, you just ride a bike on the water, right? Well, let me tell you, this is MUCH harder and more strenuous that it appears or than is mentioned to you before you go out. If you're a competitive cyclist you may not have any problems, but I ride at least twice a week over 20 miles and I was chuffing it after the first 15 min. As recommended by the young, rather indifferent lad running the stand that day I headed straight across the boat channel going in and out of the busy harbor. This would not have been my first choice of routes but that was the recommendation to get over to the other side where the water was ostensibly calmer than the choppy seas near their launch dock. Let me say that these things don't move fast and they don't allow for a steady cadence when pedaling so you really don't have a ton of maneuverability. Going straight across the boat channel you really have to watch out for other watercraft and deal with their sometimes significant wakes! Not a super comfortable experience. How slow are these water bikes really? Well, once i finally reached the moorings on the other side of the channel I got passed by a kayaker and a mom on a SUP with her young son aboard :-). The kid asked if I wanted a tow!! :-) I almost said yes!! In any case, on the day I was out the wind was a bit stiff and the currents and eddy's in the harbor made navigation a bit challenging at times with such limited maneuverability. Obviously, there is a learning curve to these things but I never felt like I really came to grips with riding one and it really wasn't that much fun IMO. YMMV, and it looks like a lot of people like them, but for my money a kayak is a far better choice for tooling around the harbor and environs. Eating lunch after my "adventure" I saw a few other folks out on the water on these things, they all seems to be struggling to some degree and two had a lot of trouble getting back across the boat channel as well. These water bikes seem much more suited to calm water places such as lakes or lagoons where currents are minimal and there might be less boat traffic. And, perhaps the launching site could be in a bit calmer place in the harbor :-) read more

We booked their evening glow ride and it was very, very cool! I thought I was going to freeze to death in a romper and cardigan, but once I started pedalling on the waterbike, I didn't feel a wee bit cold. I would definitely recommend bringing a light sweater just in case though! We weren't sure where to meet at first since we booked it through Airbnb and the details weren't too specific, but when we sent a message asking for help, we received a reply almost instantly. Meet up is at the dock behind the restaurant. You sign a waiver, leave one ID, and are given a walkie-talkie and a wireless speaker to play your music while you cruise the bay. The walkie-talkie is so the workers can communicate with you along the way. It was such a nice, relaxing, and fun first-time experience on a water bike. I loved that you could play your music of choice while you pedalled your way on the water. It really made it much more enjoyable. You could be blasting some slow jams or some ratchet music... your choice, haha! Would have been cool if the water bikes had strobe lights!! Maybe that'd be something they'd implement later on. My boyfriend and I were looking for a thrilling outdoor activity during Covid times, and this was perfect! We're both first timers and we did not expect water biking to be so fun and challenging! The dock is kind of hidden, but you can't miss it if you find Ballast Point. Just look for the hydro bike sign and follow down towards the water. I booked our 1 hour time slot over the phone and spoke to Mike. Such a nice and genuine guy! And the kids who helped us get onto our bikes were really friendly. I highly recommend this to everyone looking to get outside and enjoy the water. We'd definitely do this again! I messaged her through Yelp because they were all booked on a Saturday and she responded back quickly initially letting me know that they were all booked and later sending another message letting me know that someone had cancelled. I was able to plan a fun water day with a friend and it was so fun, it easily turned in to a good work out as well. So if you skipped leg day, no worries the water bikes got you covered lol Check in was so easy. You're required to fill out paperwork and leave one form of identification at the desk and then you're off. The bikes are easy to navigate and there's almost zero chance that you'll fall into the water. The location is also really easy to find! Whenever it is hot I automatically want to go to Long Beach and I'm always looking for nearby adventures when I remembered there's one thing I still haven't done: water bikes. It's $25 to ride for one hour. I was really disappointed to find out that the two attached bikes that I wanted to get were out of commission. I had to pump myself up do this. Leave it up to me to wear the wrong clothes for this event. I'm realizing that my skirt was probably flashing these two guys that were sitting on the rocks getting stoned watching us. They started yelling "you can do it!" We didn't know that we were going to have cheerleaders so we couldn't let them down as we embarked on our trip out into the sea. I soon realized this is definitely not for me but it would definitely be a great adventure for someone who's already athletic, but that wasn't me. I'm glad I got to try it out one time. read more

HYDRO-bikes, waterbikes, banana bikes... whatever the name, they are well worth the nightly glow! One of my local galpals had a bouncing birthday celebration this past weekend in LBC and even though it was cold as B A L L S we jumped and peddled to our hearts' content. Simple instructions were given to ride away from the brewery and inward of the marina. This wasn't too hard, but get ready for a butt-woopin' workout because you'll be peddling against the tide that comes into Alamitos bay. PSA: one of the kind boys at the dock told us (before we mounted in all of our goosebump-glory) that a customer from the brewery next door purposefully-- drunkenly-- tipped over a waterbike. This is a lot of work on their part to flip the damn bikes back over, not to mention how sack-shrinkingly cold it was that particular night. Word to the wise: bring kindness, share it, bathe in it, return it. Some things to note: -- arrive early enough to find parking (limited and shared parking with Ballast Point Brewing Co. next door) -- bluetooth speakers available for free ! This was such a fun activity ! On a whim, I made a reservation online the night prior for 12pm. My boyfriend and I got to long beach at 11, so we decided to grab a quick bite at Ballast Point and once we were done checked in with the employee. After signing a waiver, we were on our bikes ! This is a lot of fun. We rented bikes around sunset. The views are amazing. And the bikes are sturdier than I thought they would be. I'm giving this four stars and not five because they should indicate a height minimum, aside from just seeing if you can reach the pedals. My son could pedal the bike but the seat hurt his backside after about 10 mins because he was a tad too short in the seat it seems. And the bikes have a terrible turning radius. They do warn you about this. But turning is super slow. My tip, the bike is easier to steer when pedaling in reverse. The staff are helpful and friendly. It's safe in the bay. No huge boats in there and the bikes are high up and easy to see. Pricing is a tad expensive but the sunset views made up for this. read more

Had so much fun today! We opted for the 12-1pm slot and got to the marina early so we could find parking. Check in at their office, it's the one with the pink door, they'll give you a clipboard and you take that down to the dock and the other personnel will provide you the life jackets and set you up on your bike. We barely made the 28inch leg requirement but we were still able to paddle around, albeit a little uncomfortable. It's a bit scary when you are trying to make it across to the calmer side as you need to paddle across where the boats are coming in and out so be mindful of your timing and not being in the way of the blasts but thankfully the baiters saw that we were struggling and didn't honk at us and went around. It was lot of fun, if I come back I need to wear some platform shoes haha. Fun experience tho! read more

Seems like a lot of people like this activity so I hate to be a downer, but IMHO it's a real waste of time and money. We tried it on a whim during the day, $50 for two bikes for an hour. We were out on the water for 10 mins and then returned. It just wasn't enjoyable. It's extremely slow and tough to pedal. I don't mind a workout and we're in decent shape (30s/athletic), but this just hurt my knees and wasn't fun. The main reason I'm giving such low rating is the following two points: 1. The employee explained that one of the bikes we were renting was the fastest of the bunch, we asked why and she elaborated that the purple bike was the only one that has an "actual hydrobike chain" while the others have "regular" bike chains. On the water we indeed noticed a significant difference, we wound up trading bikes bc I couldn't keep up with my boyfriend who is both stronger and on a literally faster bike. When he got on my bike with the regular chain he was taken aback at how much more resistance there was (he assumed I was just slow). Aside from the obvious inconvenience of not being able to keep pace with each other, it peeved us that we were paying to rent equipment that was sub-standard. If we are renting a hydrobike I want a real hydrobike with the OEM chain. 2. As I mentioned we returned after about 10mins out on the water, we pretty much just crossed the channel and turned back. They greeted us kindly and asked if we had fun...we explained no, sorry we didn't that's why we were back so soon. They were nice enough about it but I was honestly expecting to be offered at least a partial refund. We technically had like 40 mins left on our clock...but we didn't want to cause a fuss and the owners weren't there so we just thanked them anyway and left. The 3 stars are because the location is beautiful and maybe other ppl like this type of exercise so I don't want to be too harsh. But for us we would rather kayak or paddle board, it's a much better experience for like 1/3 of the price in the same bay. read more

In theory, this experience should of been fun but boy are the bikes mounted on two pontoons inefficient as all get out. One has to pedal constantly and it's exhausting even with the wind at your back and going with the current. The chains and petals are rusty too and the bike is difficult to turn too. The indifferent staff person gave a brief talk on rules but made no effort to fit the seat to the appropriate height or even straighten it out. I ended up only one dock down to dismount and fix my seat and by then I knew I'd never be able to cross the boat channel and get back in one hour so I quit. I rode mostly back to the original dock albeit on the other end and wrong side. The staff person came out and I asked him to ride the damn thing back. He did reluctantly only to hear him tell a newly arrived staff member "the 'female dog word' made me ride it back!" For a one hour rental on Alamitos Bay, go with something powered. A total waste of my $30. My hubby managed better but came back wiped out. read more

Never thought I'd have to say this in a Yelp review but this is the perfect social-distant activity to do during a pandemic. If you can find parking in the lot right in front of Ballast Point, walk towards the building and to the right you'll see an A-frame for "Hydrobike Rentals." From there, make left and continue down towards the dock. TBH I was pretty nervous because one of the workers pointed out the path we had to take and what to avoid but upon entering the waters, you have to cut diagonally across the water to get to where you could safely bike. Doesn't sound so bad until you see all the boats that're entering and leaving the marina but we were there during Labor Day so I think boat traffic was at it's peak (and probably won't be too bad on any other weekend). All boats will usually maneuver around you and most will slow down to let you cross so you don't need to worry but still keep an eye out. Once you're where you need to be, have fun pedaling! It's great workout. From what I noticed, all of the workers took proper steps to ensure that guests remained socially distant, disinfected the bikes and life jackets, and everyone is required to have masks while on deck. Go ahead and make your reservation now (1 hour per reservation); I'd recommend scheduling it for later in the day so it's not as hot but we recently went this past Labor Day weekend where SoCal was experiencing 100+ weather and our 4:00 p.m. appointment had amazing weather. This activity looks like fun. Out on the water, in the sun, and getting exercise. What more could you ask for? I asked for a motor. The peddling is not smoorh. The peddles stop on the end of the down stroke. I cant believe I paid them for that experience. Joshua is not the most personable. The young lady that helped us was a little enthusiastic and at least smiled. Joshua seemed to be bothered that we were there. He told us that we could not ride unless we make reservations on line. LB water bikes was the highlight of my trip to Long Beach. It's such great fun to be pedaling through the marina and seeing all the other boats such as sailboats pass by. The water bikes themselves glide gracefully through the water; they are stable and as you ride them you feel a bit invincible- like Aquaman. My friends who were with me felt like their ride was pretty leisurely; as a plus-sized gal I noticed that my bike's floats were sunken deeper into the water than my friends' and thus made it harder for me to pedal/went slower. On the bright side, I did get more of a workout then they did and still had a ton of fun! The view from the bikes is nice; you get to see a lot of beach front properties and people lounging on inlets of sand (and dogs swimming if you're lucky!) Parking is a concern.... come early! We almost ate into our time because we had so much difficulty finding a parking spot. But afterward the ride, you're right next to Ballast Point brewery... we were quite thirsty so of course we took advantage and made a day of it. Have fun! read more

SUPER FUN and relaxing activity! Staff is friendly and helps you hop on the water bike carefully, and instructs you on where you can bike to. This was my first time water biking, and I really enjoyed just being able to bike on WATER and get a nice view of the marina! Who would've thought such a thing like Waterbikes could ever exist? It's only one person per bike, and it's more of a leisurely activity where you wanna take your time and just enjoy the ride. I love to find random and fun adventure to do as I have too much energy. I am so glad I found this place. It is such an exciting activity to do with your partner, friends or children. This used to be Long Beach Hydrobikes. I came in August of this year and came with bunch of friends. I was really nervous as I don't know how to swim and I wasn't sure how I was going to complete this activity. This place is on the dock behind Ballast Point Brewery. Parking is free. We didn't have reservation and came on the Saturday. Upon arrival, we had a wonderful male staff, who was so helpful to us. He gave us a deal from groupon without us actually buying it. He educated us about where we will be biking to (Ex: the Naples Canals, along the beach) and provided safety instructions/Map. They have two options of bikes to chose from (Tatum bike for two or solo bike). All the bikes came with a life jacket and a basket to put your personal belongings. There is no seatbelt on this bike and the seat aren't the most comfortable. However, It is perfectly fine to ride it for 1 hour. We all decided to have the solo bike for $20 per person/per hour. We decided to bet that whoever the last person to return to the dock, they will have to pay for lunch for everyone. We were then off in racing. It was such a beautiful and perfect day on the beach. We got to interact with other people, who are kayaking, rafting, boating and paddle boarding. I was also able to lay out by the beach. Also, please don't try to be cute by wearing sandals without strap and a dress. Lets be comfortable by wearing appropriate attire to be on the beach, where you are not afraid to get wet Although my poker face was on, I was really nervous about falling into the water and drown. However, I am super competitive and is a sore loser. I was going to fake it until I make it. I decided I was going to bike it to win. Despite I have cheaters in my group as they were trying to knock me down by bumping me off with their bikes. I survived and claimed to be the champion. I would say that I am physically fit. However, biking on the water is somewhat difficult. If heavy waves or a boat passes by, you will need to steady yourself so you don't fall. I would say going toward the canal was much easier then coming back as your are going against current. I got a great tan and the view was amazing. I heard God can walk on water and I felt I was almost able to achieve this by waterbiking. I never felt my own personal limitation (I couldn't swim), while doing this activity. I waved at my disciples (random people) as I bike along the water. I also socialized with lots of people on the beach. Girls, there are a lots of good looking, fit and wet men on the water. I had cheap thrills all day.I can't wait to come again when weather is better and it is not so cold. It took us a little longer than 1 hour, but since they had just opened. Staff were nice and did not charge us one extra hour. My hubby and 2 friends had a wonderful time! We went in the evening so we could enjoy the Xmas lights and decor. No prior ability needed. It was super easy and fast to learn. It's very very hard to be off balance, if that's a worry. Only hiccup was that the chain came off my bike and I couldn't put it back on since it was slippery from the oil. But our instructor, Nate, came to my rescue and literally pulled me through the entire tour! Technically, I got a free ride and show, while relaxing. I had to give him a Xmas tip for that. Customer service: Amazing!!! So friendly and offered hot coco and cookies and water. Also, Nate was awesome!!! Tip: Grab a hot coco and a water...there are 2 cup holders on each bike.
