When you want some comfort food fish and chips LJS is the place I hit. I have been eating at LJS since I was a boy, so close to 35 years. Today I was in the mood to buy some hush puppies. I usually buy enough to have for the current meal and freeze the rest for later. The problem I encounter is I usually buy 12 dozen and have to sit and wait 35-45 minutes depending on how busy they are. Since this is a real deal LJS and not the combo franchises they let me call the order in for the hush puppies. This saves me time, and them time and allows them to prepare them at a normal pace instead of fast and furious. When I arrived the hush puppies had just finished being made. Back in the 90's I worked at the LJS on Main and Stapley (no longer there) for 8 days. 8 days!!! I slipped and tripped on the frying oil once and was burned every day and multiple times per day while dropping the food into the frying oil. I detested being a cook there and luckily found a job at Target at the end of my eighth day at LJS. BUT....I never hated the food. While studying socializing at the U of A in Tucson, my friend and I found an all-you-can-eat LJS and stuffed our faces every other week there. Flash forward to the 2000s and LJS across the Valley died and just recently returned and my wife and I are very happy! This LJS in East Mesa is way out of our way, but I take my Dad to his doctor's appointment and the office is right down the street. I've now been twice to this location's drive thru and am impressed with the service and food. My favorite items are the fish, chicken planks, hush puppies cole slaw and flavorful green beans. Each time I've visited, the staff have been happy to take my order. Each time, they've thrown in quite a bit of "crispies", which are such a treat! This is drive through only. They have on masks when at the drive through window. Three was no line service was good. Courteous lady at the drive through window. The gentleman who took my order was very pleasant. I was very pleased. The food was exactly what I ordered. 30 minutes to get food that was burnt. 10 minutes after I ordered they dropped some food? It was just for the customer in front of me or the wrong food, she left but I continued to wait. When they finally cooked my chicken an employee who had just been standing waiting to assemble my order ( remember this employee). finished assembling my order and gave it to me, I had waited 30 minutes from the time I ordered 6:50 on my receipt till I got in my car 7:20. I'm a dashboard dinner, so after I get back on the road I open the container( I had ordered chicken with an extra piece) I noticed 2 pieces were fried together and all 3 looked darker than normal? My wife and I stopped in and ordered 2 fish plates. I was paying for them when they were put in the pickup window. The fish was horrible and obviously had been sitting in a warmer for a while. Fish used to be large fillets now you could fold a dollar bill in half and cover it just about. the shrimp could be covered with a quarter. Well it sure isn't what it used to be. Hadn't eaten at Long John's for several years; but I stumbled across this place today. I ordered the 2 piece fish dinner with fries. They used to beat Arthur Treachers fish for taste and quality. What I got today was a flat, soggy, tasteless fish PATTY that was so greasy and flavorless that I tossed it in the rubbish after one bite. The fries weren't any better. The customer service seemed a little rude as in its 8:30 and they are about to close at 9:00 and I understand the irritation to clean up and finish up for the night but as a customer I'm just there to get food and go. Made me feel as if I was being in the way or it was my fault for being there, I really wish they were more nicer and not rude especially the female who was rushing me to already pay for my order.To top it off barely anything on the food especially for the amount we have paid for. They seemed to put a certain food item in a wrong container and it made it less of a amount then it already was. It's now March 2022 and their dining room is still closed. This is the only place that I've seen that the dining room is still closed. If it's safe for all the buffets to be open I thing it's safe to open your little dining room. This is the last time that I will ever go to a LJS to eat. Don't blame this on covid. On multiple trips here during the pandemic they were closed when they showed that they were supposed to be open. OK, horrible times for the whole country so I guess they get a pass. On multiple trips while waiting in line prior to the pandemic I smelled a sewage odor. Why didn't I leave? Not sure. Their fish used to be so good I gave them a pass on that too. When the pandemic originally started to ease up in the spring/summer of 2021, I ordered fish and it was really greasy and made me sick. That was the final straw for me and I've never been back. We were pleasantly surprised after reading some of the reviews about LJS Had to do drive thru which was fast even with car before us placing large order. Had the 8 pc fish family meal and it was great. Took us almost 15 min to get home and the fish were not greasy, French fries still hot and Mac and cheese tasty. Some time has elapsed since the initial purchase but these concerns need to be taken seriously! Especially at these prices and people who are willing to spend their hard earned money, go out their way, and end up disappointed because trust is everything and especially in food preparation, it is for me any way. Atrocious and absolutely awful experience! Drove for 22 minutes to nearest LJC on Power Road and requested freshly prepared and hot considering the drive back. I even told them freely that I would park and wait as it was for my clients. Food tasted old, NOT HOT AT ALL, just warm and chicken hard, disgusting and warm!!! No consideration at all! I parked, I waited and considerate of their time and respectful!!! Never again and I've been going there for 3 years. The prices skyrocketed and you'd think they'd be mindful as paying upwards of $60.00!! I am done with this one and will drive further out if I and my clients have a hankering for fish. Let the buyer beware as they know you can't walk in to see if in fact it is being freshly prepared and that sucks. Not getting what I paid for is bad enough but being lied to about it is worse and that put it over the top for me and my clients as well!! Its no telling what goes on behind closed doors particularly when you can't see what they are doing to your food. It's like they know the words to the song but can't carry the tune. - A real LJ's will include some of those delectable batter crispies along with your order. And Baby... those are important. - The combo places don't include those little flavor/texture enhancers. What a crime. - Finally, this location has Annette from Tennessee. New management is awesome. Fish has been great and fries have been good. Got some not fresh fries one night as they were super slow and it was later. Mentioned it before I left the window and the manager fried me up some new ones and upsized them for me. Oct 20 - this is a stand alone, good old fashioned LJS. Dining room is closed, the Drive-Thru was packed and the order taker super helpful and friendly. Used a promotional coupon to get the 3 piece chicken with 2 sides, I chose slaw and MAC and CHEESE! That was a bonus! The pieces of chicken were big, juicy and crispy, the slaw creamy and fresh, the Mac and cheese delightful! Plus, there was also a big helping of the crispy crunchiest-my favorite! Even though there was quite a wait in the Drive-Thru, the service at the window was great, the food was hot and tasted delicious! We pulled up at 7:40 on a Sunday, took a 20 minute drive, just to see that they closed early. Website says they close at 9 pm. They had a cone in the drive thru and we saw a male worker turn off the lights as we pulled up. The fish, shrimp and chicken were perfectly battered and cooked. The fish did have a small piece of fat on the last bite I couldn't chew through, but nothing like you'd find on a whole breast like at KFC. The help... well they were tremendously friendly! Had a craving for LJS for my birthday since we were visiting my mother who lives nearby we picked up a big box for 40$ and went to her house to have a birthday lunch, I was immediately shocked at how greasy the fish is now, it wasn't even crispy. What has happened to the flavor of the batter? First, this location didn't honor the all you can eat fish on Sunday. Then, finally, they do. Only.. they charge $8.99 instead of the $7.99 that is advertised. No signs up that say that, I even called to make sure they had the all you can eat deal and they never told me they charge more for it than the email I keep getting from them saying it's $7.99. I only ordered the bare minimum. Nothing odd or special. Restaurants that do this crap need to be boycotted. The service at Long John Silver's at this location is really shi!!y. I went there a couple times after work and it's always at least 10-12 minute wait before I get my food. I decided to go there during my lunch break today. What a mistake that was. I got my drink but I didn't get my food even though I waited over 15 minutes. I only had 5-10 minutes to clock in and get back to my job. I ended up leaving instead of waiting a ridiculous amount of time to get my food. I rather waste 5-10 dollars then lose my job. I think I will avoid Long Jhon Silver's at this location for now on. read more
