I went to the grill for the first time today. We went in and they were busy. Took a bit to get seated. The table we sat at had a good view of the patio as well. We meandered and people watched a bit. Plus side on the patio byod! Bring your own DOG!! That is the only thing that I needed to know I was coming back. After about 20 minutes we had to call over someone to take our drink order. By that time we also ordered food. We all ordered bloody Mary's two breakfasts and I had the grill burger with an egg and fries. Bloody Mary's get an A+ if you like spicy do that option the regular doesn't have a big kick. Grill burger delicious first place that actually did the meat the way you request it. Fries OMG so amazing. The people I was with ordered chocolate chip pancakes for their side. The pancakes didn't come out so we checked in then they weren't chocolate chip. The server came and apologized you could tell he felt bad. The manager also came over spoke with us. They took the pancakes off our bill without a word from us. The manager was on the floor and helped out her crew. They meshed and were personable. Not only is the grill dog friendly but there were multiple families with young children. As one family walked out the father stated "this was super kid friendly" it also adds to their appeal as they provide goldfish crackers and the usual crayons and paper to entertain the youngsters. I love some good outdoor seating and tonight was perfect for it. The cheese curds were awesome. Mango mojito was good too. We also had flatbreads and the pork waffle and everything was great. Took my family here for a small event. We started with the cheese curds which were very good! Put me in the mood for the State Fair! We all ordered drinks and the portions were shorter than expected for the price. We all then ordered our main entrée. The burgers were cooked as requested. My first time at Longfellow Grill was an enjoyable one! I went with some of my friends, and we decided to eat on the patio which was a solid decision. I went with the fish and chips which was excellent and my friends had the fish tacos and the burger special which they said was good. The service was fast, friendly, and informative! Longfellow Grill is one of my favorite restaurants in the Twin Cities and I go at least once a week. The food is fresh and tasty and there is a good variety, including interesting specials. The location is very convenient (street parking easy) and it is perched right above the river so you can enjoy the view and also have the option of a walk along River Road. I choose going to restaurants when they are not too crowded so I rarely have to wait for a table. But the times I have had to wait a little bit, the host was efficient and gracious. I find Longfellow is a great place to relax, enjoy a good meal, and spend time talking with friends. It is a perfect place for a leisurely weekday breakfast or fun drinks/appetizers on the patio.I think the patio is one of the prettiest and comfortable in town (tucked back from the road, w/effective umbrellas and heaters that make shoulder seasons pleasant.) But the main reason I keep going back is the wonderful staff. They are efficient, friendly, interesting people who serve with humor and flair. Some have been there for years and they seem to really enjoy working there. They treat us well every time we come and work hard to make us feel welcome. Another time to go to Longfellow Grill is for their special, family-style Easter brunch! Ten family and friends went today and thoroughly enjoyed the four-course meal. Everything was really delicious and plentiful. They out did themselves with the menu! We had a great time. We are very lucky to have such a great neighborhood restaurant! read more

Service was great, but... I ordered an Eggs Benedict. The eggs were perfectly poached and I wish the plate had ended there. The "muffin" bore no resemblance to an English muffin being twice as thick and dense. It should have come with a steak knife because with a regular table knife I had to saw at it to get a piece off. Then there was the Hollandaise, a great disappointment. Hollandaise is suppose to be yellow with egg and butter, smooth and creamy, and if done well have a hint of lemon. It's one of the foundational sauces of French cuisine. The Hollandaise at Longfellow is none of these. It's pale, almost white, watery and vinegary with not one hint of either butter or lemon. I'm not certain what it was, but it certainly was not Hollandaise -- not even in the same family. Avoid! Like the plague. Don't know if I'll go back. It's hard to trust a place that can't make Hollandaise. read more

We came for brunch on New Year's Day. We decided to call ahead to see if they were open and what the wait time was. They said if we arrived in about 15-20 minutes we would have a 10 minute wait and our name would be put down prior to us arriving. Sounded like a great idea. We got in when they requested and were told it would be 10-15 minutes. We did not get seated for another hour, watching at least 10 tables our size come and go. The hosts clearly had no idea what they were doing and were extremely unhelpful. When tables would open they would first take at least 5-10 minutes to get the table ready and then call 1 name and if they didn't respond, that was it. No moving down the list. The table would sit empty for another 10+ minutes. This is not a knock on the food. It is absolutely delicious and why we decided to wait. But it is bad restaurant management to tell a group 10 minutes on two separate occasions and then proceed to have them wait an hour with no explanation and seemingly no real order as to why certain groups get seated when they do. The call-in option is not real here - don't waste your time calling ahead. Anytime I see a moderate wait here when I walk in, we will be leaving immediately. read more

Oy, this used to be my neighborhood restaurant. Been there more than a few times (couldn't help it, I lived in the apartment connected to the restaurant!). I've NEVER been impressed, or even had an ok meal or adequate service there. Example 1 (Service): A friend and I went for breakfast and we waited for over an hour for overeasy egg. Manager did come to apologize that the chef found making an overeasy egg was a very difficult task...um..ok, I'm not in anyways a chef, but even I can make an overeasy egg, easily, in like 2 minutes? We weren't compensated either. Example 2 (Food): Food is horrible, I've gotten sick. It's organic? Please, I rather have non-organic than food poisoning. Also, it's OVERPRICED. I've NEVER understood the hype. Yes, it's on West River Pkwy...but it's not like facing the river, but just the Pkwy, if you get to sit out on the patio..and the patio feels kinda cramped, and the industrial seats and tables aren't comfortable. I may be more critical because location wise, it was in the same building where I lived, so I can't help but pass by everyday. Obviously after the above two experiences I have never been back, and if I met up with friends, I always met them at the Dunn Bros,which was also in my building. Ahh.. it feels so good to be open and be able to share my feedback on Longfellow freely now on Yelp now that I do not live in that apartment connected to the restaurant and it's no longer my neighborhood restaurant. *Sigh of relief* read more

4 stars for food, 2 stars for service. I'd say 1 star for parking, but I really never hold a restaurant responsible for their location. If I'm traveling to you, I won't care about your situation. Anyways, had a group of six go there for breakfast. We were seated in a corner booth and it was probably the biggest table in the place. Our waitress never really introduced herself and just came and handed us the menus after we were seated. She wasn't terribly attentive and left some coffee go unfilled on a couple occasions. She also forgot the side of bacon for one of the people in our party. I ordered the breakfast burrito, my sister ordered the churro fried toast. The rest of the clan ordered pretty plain stuff but everyone agreed that this place had pretty awesome food at hella decent prices. The churro toast was amazeballs! My sis skipped the syrup to avoid the extra sweetness because the candied nuts and chocolate sauce were enough. I tried it and wished I had a plate for myself. My burrito was filled with pork, black beans, eggs, cheese, and hash browns. It didn't come with a side, and didn't need to. The lime sour cream was a tinge spicy, and it was great. This is the best place to go for happy hour, hands down. I hate to give up the secret but there you have it. Happy hour-priced apps are good, especially the pork quesadilla, and not half-sized because they're half-priced like at so many (hello, Meson! Town Talk Diner, are you there?) other places. What the hell is special about that? And a $2 tap? Incredible. Unheard-of. But for real and right here at the Longfellow. I won't even go into how awesome it is to sit on the porch in summer because I might get all depressed. I want to give it four and a half stars but that's not an option here. Half a star deduction for those awful fritter things whose name I can't remember because they were forever banished from my memory after the first bite. I think they're supposed to have gorgonzola and corn, or something? Anyway, they are just big bready balls without much flavor. Avoid them like the plague. read more

I'm sure if I would have tried the food my rating would be better. However I simply couldn't make it there. Walked in around lunch on a Sunday. Felt rather chaotic even for that time. There seemed to be a lot of employees frantically trying to figure out what to do. We were told 10 minutes to be seated. With a quarter of the tables vacant, but uncleared our wait was 20 minute. By this point the noise and chaos was a bit overbearing. Before would could even get a drink order in my headache was so bad we had to leave. It started out that I got a 5 dollar off coupon for 3 Squares in MG. I was checking out the menu and had the thought to compare it to Highland Grill and Longfellow. The latter was almost identical, and Highland is just a pain for dinner and the menu isn't as elaborate. So common sense said it's not worth a 5 dollar off coupon to drive all that way. I'm ashamed to say I've never been here in the 23 years of life in MN. We shared the buffalo calamari app. It was delicious and kind of filling because you will need to dip it in the blue cheese dressing. My entree was a side of mac and cheese, 2 for 2, it had me at Vermont Irish Cheddar. It's big enough that I just kept not believing it wasn't the entree size and only 4 dollars. We shared the devils food cake. I kept thinking back to the Duncan Hine's boxes as a kid. This was decadent without being dense. A nice whipped cream on top. Our waiter was the young Gill, and let's say I've been having the luck of the Irish with servers. I don't remember having a more enthusiastic and helpful waiter. He couldn't believe it was our first time either, and we're both looking forward to more visits here. read more

This is a sad review to write because I actually really like the food here a lot. Unfortunately, if you are compelled to walk out of the restaurant before you've even ordered your food, I cannot in good conscience give more than one star. Sigh... On three separate occasions now I have been served coffee in a mug that was NOT CLEAN. And not just that the mugs appear unclean (they serve coffee in these ugly mugs that look like leftovers from a 1980s garage sale...supposed to be kitschy I think but they look tacky...why not just have a crisp white mug?!). Rather, these cups clearly had old dried coffee stains on them, or lip/chap stick residue, or just random black smudges. These were not those deep kinds of stains that aren't actually "dirty"...these are stains that easily rub off with a touch of saliva...why my thumb and spit works better than your dishwasher, I do not wish to investigate. This last time was the final straw. We just got up and walked out, never to return. I explained the problem to the hostess and she graciously asked if I'd like to speak with a manager. I appreciated that, but I was starving and really didn't care to solve the problem, but rather to GTFO of there as quickly as possible. At the end of the day, no amount of creative, delicious food will save you if you can't even bother to serve it on clean dishes. So gross. read more

I used to love this restaurant. The past 2 times I have eaten here, once in January and then just this past Monday night the food has been terrible!! I had to send back the eggplant Parmesan - it was soggy and gross in January. On Monday, I wanted to give the place one more try, my fish taco's tasted off, the fish was definitely past prime and my friends pulled pork sandwich was served on a cold bun and was so dry you had to drink water to avoid coughing. I decided last time I was there not to write a bad review, but after giving it a second shot I wish I would have stuck with my gut feeling. The first time I eat at the Longfellow I was really excited to check it out. I lived in the neighborhood and heard such great things. I ordered the salmon with potatoes. When I got my food my salmon was still freezing and slimy in the center. It took the waiter about 20 minutes to spot in and check on us again, so my friend was done with her food before they offered to remake mine. The waiter took one look at it and immediately took it off the table before I could even ask them to through it back on the grill. They tried to make it better (which I respect, I work in the service industry myself, I understand things happen) . They offered my friend and I desert, which we took them up on. I had heard great things about there citron lemon something desert. However, when we got it, it had a chunk of plastic in it. It was from someone cutting the corner off of a plastic bag. COME ON people! I left hungry and completely disgusted! Tonight my friend asked me to give it another shot, I joked with her that I wouldn't be eating any fish or desert! I was really in the mood for a turkey burger, she explained that they were voted the best in the Twin Cities for their turkey burgers. That seemed like a good enough review to me.......sad to say I left again very disappointed! I ordered the turkey burger with sweet potato fries. When I got my plate the whole bottom was soaked in grease. The bun of my burger started to dissolve, I couldn't even pick it up. I had to cut it up and eat it with no bun! The toppings on the burger were disappointing as well, Ice burg lettuce, really? The fries were so bad I couldn't bring myself to even eat them. A couple of friends and I came here for a nice Sunday brunch for the first time. Even though I called ahead there was a half an hour wait. I didn't mind though considering it was a Sunday brunch and traffic is busy at every other restaurant/grille. While we were waiting for our table, a waitress was asking anyone if they wanted some coffee and the hostess was asking the waiting customers if they'd like to try some of the dishes. I thought that was lovely considering most places don't do that to the waiting patrons. Once we were seated our waiter came over and was splendid. Over all the food was about 8 out of 10. I'd say if you come here definitely order the hot chocolate. The whip cream will knock your socks off. I will be coming back shortly for sure. They've got a long term customer out of me. read more

Three of us went to breakfast last Sunday. Chiliquiles were awful with weird sour cream topping with lots of sugar and chemical lime flavor. Tortilla strips were soggy. Eggs Benedictine has undercooked flavorless asparagus and hollandaise sauce that was applied with an eye dropper instead of a spoon. Manager came over to ask how the food was. When he heard the complaint about the chiliquiles he got furious, argued, insulted us and stalked away. I've been here before for brunch and it was alright. I've always thought it to be a bit overrated, but it's generally not bad. This time was different. I was with a group of 5 + baby. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their food for the most part, so maybe I just got the bad cook. I'm not usually picky, but everything on my plate was soggy--oversaturated french toast, slimy eggs and super oily sausage. Not impressed, but was mostly edible. I just picked around a bit. However, the service certainly left a lot to desire. Tasha T. was our server, according to my receipt. Maybe she was having a bad day, but there's really no excuse for the rudeness we encountered. She was fine until it came time to pay. She dropped the check off and our party was chatting for awhile and apparently not settling up quickly enough for her. She then stopped back twice, picking up the check and asking if we had settled it yet. The second time she said "Oh, well you're my last table, so if you guys could just...", with a fake smile. Then she copped an attitude when we asked her to split the check. And the kicker--as we are getting ready to go and bundling up a baby, she pushed her way in to grab the checks. Ridiculous behavior and I let my tip do the talking. I hope she got the message, but I'm assuming it just led to lots of trash-talking with fellow servers. I was a server for several years and you DO NOT treat a customer like that. You let them know they are your last table and offer to pass them along if they are staying around. People usually settle up at that point. You certainly do not get an attitude with them because you are in a hurry to leave. I don't expect special treatment, but talking a bit and asking to split the tab is not unreasonable. Between the blah food and the bad service, I won't be back. After becoming a regular at Groveland Tap in St. Paul, we decided to try this place knowing it was connected. Sooooo glad we did! The sauce I LOVE so much at Groveland for the sweet potato tots is here too, but sweet potato fries are even better! I had the stacked veggie sandwich---omg. Crisp and airy sourdough bread, herby and yummy flavors! Hubby had the steak and pierogies, WOW. I would order that any day. Steak was cooked perfect, real-deal pierogies, and great flavor. Have to come back again to try drinks and dessert that all look amazing. Super clean place, great service, perfect location--especially if you wanna walk or bike the river parkway. I was a little concerned about the size of our group, so spoke with someone on Monday to discuss the possibilities, and then again around 11:30 on Tuesday to get put on the call-ahead list for outdoor seating at 4:30. Very nice people on each phone call. Unfortunately, the manager Tuesday evening at check-in was unpleasant. The two people who arrived first were told in a mean, snippy tone that yes, there was a call-ahead listing for 7 people, but call-ahead doesn't mean you'll get it, and that we would have to wait at least a half an hour. Completely understandable, since it is only call-ahead. But guess what - all of that information could have been relayed in the pleasant manner I've experienced from the rest of the staff. The fact that he got two of my mild-mannered friends upset by his snotty attitude before the evening was even started was a bummer. And pretty freakin' uncalled-for, when they were just trying to get our group seated where we had requested. Definitely not going there with a large group again. This was especially hard to take since we made the effort to get there by 4:30 in order to have the place less busy, and we observed a threesome sitting at the only large outdoor table, which just seems like nobody looked at the call-ahead list before seating that party. I'm sure managing an outdoor seating area in MN in the summer can be a hassle, but I did everything I could to reduce this hassle, and in return, friends were treated badly. Boo to that manager. This being said, it was just one of a half dozen visits over the last couple of months, all of which have been pleasant. However, I do feel that some of the items are $1-2 more than one would expect, and I wasn't too fond of the strange cumin-based seasoning on the beef for the Szechuan beef salad - cumin just doesn't say szechuan to me, and it really didn't go with the flavor of the salad dressing very well. Also observed that the beef ravioli a friend ordered looked pretty oily last night. So all-in-all, an A-OK place, but nothing I'm 100% sold on anymore. read more

i enjoy all the blue plate spots in the twin cities... usually we go to edina grill, but i was in the mood for a change of scenery. first off, its got a GREAT location... on E. Lake, right on the river... and yesterday was a perfect fall morning to be down by the river. they have a great menu, for all three meals. of course we were there for breakfast, so thats what i'll stick to. i had the breakfast burrito, which was HUGE... and tasty. full of pulled pork, beans, cheese... topped with salsa verde. very tasty, the pork was done well, and the salsa was yummy. my wife had the tostadas, and they were great as well. sweeter than i expected, but great. our son had their daily special, which was pumpkin pancakes, and again they were tasty. just an aside, but they are really a mexican spot, we both just happened to order mexican. a great local spot worth visiting again and again. read more
