On the occasion of Long's Bakery's inclusion on Yelp's "must visit" donut shops list from each state, I suppose it's time for me to finally serve up my review of the westside donut icon. Long's was opened in January, 1955 by Carl and Mildred Long at this location. In 1987, a second location was added on the southside. Both locations are still open and still in their original location. Long's, in fact, is still in the Long family with Carl Long's grandchildren now running the operation. It has always been family-owned. Carl had worked in a German bakery and developed a lighter, fluffier yeast. To this day, a simple yeast donut remains their most popular item. As has always been true, Long's is a cash-only shop. The gas station across the street has an ATM. It's not uncommon to see a line out their door. They're in a residential area and are definitely a destination donut shop. Parking tends to be along the street, not exactly great for wheelchair users, however, for the most part it works. While I'm typically a "chocolate frosted" guy, in this case I typically stick with the traditional yeast donut. I have many fond memories of Long's. When I was a kid enduring many medical procedures due to spina bifida, a stop at Long's would be my mother's bribery for a job well done. It worked. Long's serves over a half-million customers annually. 75% of their business comes from donuts. Fun fact: Rapper Kevin Studdard once did a viral video about Long's Donuts. The donuts are awesome. The apple fritters are pretty great. Strangely enough, I'm not a big fan of the chocolate frosted. I will admit that part of my five-star rating is based on nostalgia and fond memories. I'm not even sure I can say Long's is my favorite shop in town, however, it's a shop I love and to this day I get cravings for the yeast donuts. I will note that this particular block can be a bit rough. While there's not typically any issues around the bakery, it's worth being aware of your surroundings. I'm aware of a couple incidents, including one recently, and the bakery is in a residential area. That said, Long's is an Indiana institution and definitely worth a visit. read more

I had the pleasure to go to Long's Bakery last summer as I was coming home from the National Eucharistic Congress in July, and let me tell ya... DANG!!! This family-owned bakery had some of the best doughnuts I have ever had! First of all, the service was top-notch, and the employees were all super nice. The doughnuts were fluffy, airy, ridiculously fresh, and had the perfect level of sweetness (the sweet spot) -get it? The illustrious Long's Bakery is a must if you're in the area or even if you're not in the area, they are worth going out of your way for. If you're lucky enough to get them warm you struck gold. I don't care for the supermarket ones in the boxes. They get soggy and sticky. These are light and fluffy. I love the glazed yeast, the cinnamon fried ones, Boston cream, and the maple cake. Basically all of them are great though. The cheese strudel if you've never had it is also fantastic. I think most locations are still cash only be prepared. This race season you will see white boxes taken into the track to eat in those early morning hours. A 72-year old, old-school, family-owned, no-frills, cash-only donut shop was a top priority on my Indianapolis itinerary. I made sure we would stop by before heading home. It certainly lived up to the hype and absolutely did not disappoint. We arrived around 1 pm on a Saturday and there was a line that was about to extend beyond the door. We waited outside for about ten minutes for the line to shorten before entering. During our wait, we ran into some folks who have frequented Long's for decades and one of them recommended the gator which is essentially a coffee cake with either a white or caramel frosting. When it was finally our turn, I did not waste a minute and ordered the following which came in three boxes for approximately $30: 1) Baby white gator - This was a bit too sweet for my liking but I love how they have it in two sizes, a baby (+$3) and a regular (+$7). 2) Glazed chocolate cake 3) Glazed applesauce cake 4) Glazed blueberry cake 5) Glazed cake 6) Glazed donut hole 7) Cinnamon donut hole 8) Chocolate yeast donut - I did not get to try this one because I mistakenly ordered one and my daughters inhaled it. 9) Apple fry donut I generally prefer yeast donuts over cake donuts but these cake donuts won me over. I cannot even decide which flavor is my favorite. Should I return...I would likely go with all four flavors again. I don't usually like dessert with baked apple pieces in them because I dislike the texture. Therefore apple pies and apple fritters are never my go-to's. However, I must say this apple fry donut has converted me and it is one of my favorites. I wish I ordered more than one! read more

I just had to stop here when passing through Indiana. I pulled up on the other side of the street and parked. I rushed in and the first thing I noticed was the cash only sign. Despite the numerous tips and mentions in the Yelp reviews, somehow I missed it. So I ran to the corner store across the street and hit up the ATM. Back inside Long's the service was swift. They had someone packaging your selected baked goods and there was another person at the register. Besides the donuts, there was cake, cookies, bars, and other pastries. There is no place to sit on the inside, just room to form a line and order. I picked a few donuts and was on my way. First of all, these donuts are super sweet. If your not a fan of plenty sugar or diabetic, you need to stay away. OMG, there was no lacking on sweetness here. Second, there was a very slight hint of off flavor that I could not place. The dough was mildly dense and a little springy. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed the donuts and I am very curious about how the other pastries fair here. Most of the staff were pretending to be staring blankly at the wall or an imaginary fly on the ceiling when we said "hello" and "have a nice day." I heard a lot of good things about Long's but the quality is definitely only half as good as Tim's Bakery in McCordsville. I really wanted to like this place more, but there were a few issues with my visit. in addition to their world famous donuts, they have some delectable bake goods such as apple fries (fritters), brownies, danish, cookies, pies and cakes. I got some gazed and chocolate covered yeast donuts. I also got a couple of brownies and strawberry danish. There is not that I can say about the donuts that have not already been said. They were delicious. My other treats were equally as good. They are very reasonably priced as well My issues with the place starts with the parking. There is only street parking available and it is very limited. To add to the limited space, there are a few broken down cars taken a few of the spaces. Second, they are only cash only. Come on, I am not expecting Apple Pay or anything, but this is 2021, everyone takes credit card now adays. Most places are starting to stop taking cash. Well anyway, have no fear fellow credit card warriors, there is a shady gas station right across the street that not only has one, but two ATMs. The ATM's service fee is reasonable too. The final issue that I had was the line moved very slow and they were not very efficient at getting customers through the line. I am sure being cash only did not help the efficiency either. The service was ok, not rude, but not notably friendly either. They did their job. Based on food alone, this place is easily 5 stars. However, taking everything into consideration they ended up with a 3. So, my advice is to get your donut or other treat and get out. read more
