We stopped at Lorraine's Shaved Ice and Banana Bread, and wow -- Lorraine was absolutely AMAZING. From the moment we arrived, she had us laughing and smiling. She confidently told us, "You haven't had shaved ice until you've had Lorraine's shaved ice." She was 100% right. Not only was the shaved ice incredible (perfect texture, incredible flavor), but the experience itself was unforgettable. Lorraine gave us a hug, showed us these super cool little weeds that retract when you touch them, and even pointed out a rock above us that looks like a smiling alligator -- which somehow made the whole moment even more magical. And the banana bread... oh my goodness. Off-the-charts amazing. It didn't even survive the walk back to our condo -- completely gone before we made it home. That's how good it was. This wasn't just a snack stop -- it was a full Maui memory. Lorraine is funny, kind, welcoming, and truly one of those people who makes your trip feel special. I wish I have better things to say about this place. We decided to stop by here to take a breather after that treacherous and narrow roads frm the blowhole up to here. My husband had to use the toilet and he kindly asked Lorraine for it. Instead of warm greetings and aloha, we were greeted by Lorraine who seemed unhappy and told us we have to pay $2 to use the toilet. I don't have a problem with paying it, but the way she said it was kinda rude and the toilet was filthy and roach-infested. We wanted to try the banana bread but it was all sold out at 12PM on a Saturday. We tried the $7 mediocre shave ice. My parents have been visiting the iconic Lorraine for many years, and I finally got to experience Lorraine Shave Ice today. Come for the shave ice, stay for the view and the enjoyable visit with Lorraine. She is witty and dry in all the best ways and seemed in no hurry for us to get on our way. We got to learn about her life, see the incredible views from her property and meet her husband. All I really wanted was to use the bathroom because I needed to focus on the tough drive. When I asked, she said we had to pay and said "nothing in life is free." Should've hard passed on this. This was one of my favorite experiences from my first trip to Maui 2 years ago! Lorraine has been a favorite spot for my fiancé and I was excited to experience this little gem. My husband and I had went to Lorraine's over 15 years ago and it was a must go stop for us on our return trip to Maui. The shave ices and banana bread are phenomenal, (I personally recommend the banana bread with chocolate chips in it and her coconut chips) and Lorraine provided the same friendly and welcoming atmosphere that we received so long ago. She will sell you a cooler bag if needed. We brought our own and filled a gallon bag with ice from hotel. She will not let you bring home a pie without it. We always look forward to her Banana Cream pie but her banana trees were damaged in a wind storm. Local friends supply her with bananas but degree of ripeness varies. So instead we tried Lilikoi (passion fruit) pie, it was good but also very sweet. In addition to buying pie and shave ice, we always buy her toasted shaved coconut chips, always tasty. On our trip to Maui, we had a full day to ourselves before meeting up with some friends. One of our friends recommended Lorraine's and glad we stopped by. Shave Ice heaven especially if you go to the backyard (back porch) and check out the scenery! Lorraine's down to earth attitude was also met with fierce sarcastic humor that made us feel so comfortable. I placed my order and she said "You no get to pick. I get to pick. You just stand there." hahaha. All I told her was I love guava and she incorporated it into a lovely shave ice I will never forget. We chatted with a few people outside and exchanged stories. If you find yourself terrified to death on a winding road in Wailuku somewhere up in the mountains, and you just need to work off some nerves... make this a resting stop, and treat yourself to some shaved ice. If you're lucky, you get to meet and chat with one of the wittiest lady I've ever come to cross paths with. After ordering three shaved ice with three VERY different flavors, we were offered to enjoy our treats in the back of the shop. The nice lady came out and sat with us, and she was sassy as hell. My kids found her humor entertaining. One of the hundreds of questions to her was: Do you own this place? Her reply: No. God owns this entire place. We're not super religious, but her response says a whole lot about her character. How humbling. Puts things in perspective esp when we were near death zigzagging this mountain. In the middle of a 60 mile bicycle ride today (West Maui Loop), I stopped to see my good friend, Lorraine. And let me tell you, she was a sight for sore eyes. You can't beat having delicious banana bread and the view. The business owner thought through the customer experience and provides a wonderful backyard view of the ocean. If i could give this place 10000/5 stars, I would. I accidentally found this shaved ice place while having no internet around the west loop of Maui and it was one of the highlights of our day. It's following a driveway with signs that they're open. It was my first time having shaved ice and the texture was sublime. She has a list of flavors and you're allowed to choose up to 3 and I loved that they weren't too sweet. The size is enough for two people to share too! She let us go to the backyard to eat them and sat with us, told us all these amazing stories of her life, how Maui has changed, how the world comes to her through visitors, and we felt blessed by her. She is a bit sassy, but just my speed. She gave us amazing advice of where to go next with a map and when we tipped her $5, she threw in an extra banana bread!
