This place, in particular the staff, is outstanding! Went in with an odd request for an allen wrench of unknown dimensions. I was given 6 different sizes, allowed out the door with each and told to try them out at home to get the right size and then come back and pay for only the one I needed. Also helped me find many other items, even going so far as to read through my car manual to help me find the right type of motor oil. I'm a local builder electrician. I go to Los Altos Hardware all the time. Course I live in Los Altos. They have everything I need. Owner Henry is always there. He keeps an incredible inventory. Older staff have been in the business for years and know their stuff. If you're a contractor talk to Henry. He's very friendly to professional$. Most stuff you can buy individual pieces or bulk. Don't have to buy a little pack where you use one and throw the others away. Placerville has the oldest continuously operating hardware store in the country. It's really cool with mining stuff and all, but Los Altos Hardware is way better. read more

This is a small store compared to Home Depot or Orchard Supply. However, I was shocked to find that this place sold concrete mix when the Orchard Supply near me didn't! The staff here are amazing. They are always friendly and know their subject. Even the high schoolers who work here know a great deal. I once bought a mousetrap but my debut card had maxed out. They told me to take the trap and come back to pay for it. (and yes I did). If I did have one issue, it's that is a bit pricey compared to other places and, being a smaller store, does not not have as many products. If your just looking for something like nails or simple odds and ends, this place is perfect. If there is something specific or large you need, Home Depot or OSH might be better. But I really like this place and strongly recommend it. read more

My project: finishing a piece of redwood to build a hat rack. This was certainly one of those projects where I signed up for it before realizing how involved it would be. Needless to say, I quickly lost confidence in whether I could do it. At my dad's suggestion, I went to TrueValue and with the help of a young man, I was back in the game! I went early in the morning right before work, so I too was dressed well, except you wont hear any sexual discrimination complaints from me and certainly no naming of the tools. I walked in and was also greeted by a young man who asked if I needed any help. I immediately told him what my project was and that I had a many questions. Step by step he patiently walked me through everything all the way to check out. I especially appreciated when he was unsure of how to answer my question, he would double check with an older gentleman before just sending me off. read more

Wonderful, old fashioned, small town customer service. I needed one tiny screw to fix a key pad. They tried 3 or 4 sizes until they found just the right one and then put the irritatingly uncooperative thing back together for me. They charged me $.17 for the screw. Made my day! read more

The best part is that there is always someone available to help you find an item or to help you decide what will work best for your needs. Last week I decided to save money on a plumber and replace the faucet of a filtration system myself. I'm clueless about plumbing but thought it should be easy enough to follow the installation instructions. It went pretty well until I reached a point where I needed to connect tubes to existing pieces and lacked both the parts and the knowledge to do it. I went to Los Altos Hardware and Ben helped me. He was amazing. He listened to my (poor) descriptions of what needed to connect to what and gave me exactly what I needed. He even lent me his own wrench instead of trying to sell me something I only needed for tightening one nut. I'm happy to say that the project succeeded (and isn't leaking). It's wonderful to have old school service here in the neighborhood. I'm only sorry there isn't a 6th star to give them! read more

Wonderful neighborhood hardware store. Not only are the people working there friendly, they are very knowledgeable too. Also, they carry some stuff that you can not find in those big stores. In addition, they have a lot of experience with some of the Los-Altos specific problems, which is so helpful for those of us who recently moved into the neighborhood. For example, we have had a bathroom toilet leaking issue and I brought in the part that seem to be smaller than what it should be. The guy immediately asked me "do you live in Los Altos?
