I'd seen Los Arcos a few times in the strip mall while visiting bargain hunt and the dollar tree.. the sign out makes it very hard to miss because it is huge. Every time I look, there are people eating in there so it must mean that are doing something right. They have great lunch deals posted that sound great...I'll have to give it a try sometime. This is a review on the food and to go service as we did not dine in. We looked over their (huge) menu and decided on a chimichanga and the chicken fajita burrito. To our surprise, the man who took our order said it would be ready in 10 minutes! That is pretty darn quick. Pretty standard Americanized Mexican cuisine. The meat was flavorful and tender. This place is located in a shopping center off of Crestwood Blvd. It's a tasty hidden gem that's modestly priced especially for the amount of food you get with each meal. I live close by so I have ordered carry out about four times and I have been very satisfied with each experience. Each carry out experience has taken a mere ten minutes for them to cook and prepare the food. The best deal in my opinion is any of their fajita options. For dinner I've ordered the Fiesta Fajitas. It's a beef, chicken, and shrimp combination. It also comes with rice and beans. It's enough to share easily between two people and it's my favorite dish on the menu. They have a wide variety of options on the menu so you should be able to order any dish you might be in the mood for. They also have great lunch specials if you're watching how much you spend. I used to love this restaurant until today. I walked in to pick up my Togo order. I walk in, behind me is a Hispanic man, behind him a white couple. The host never even acknowledged me, the black lady. So I found myself in a state of total hunger, thinking about where to eat, and after circling around a bit, the hunger overcame me along with the desire to get a lot of food, because I was completely on empty. So, I pulled into Los Arcos, and I'm glad that I did. Sometimes you want a small bite of something both artistic and delicious, sometimes you want a bulk order of tacos and beans. Los Arcos, in the latter case is a great place to go. You can leave stuffed to the brim and ready to take a nap for under 15 bucks. I had 3 tacos, a side of beans, and a bean and queso dip. It was so much food that I nearly exploded. The portions were good, the food was up to par, and the service wasn't too bad at all. One thing to note is that the sweet tea is insanely sweet. I asked to trade for half unsweetened and it was still wayyy sweet. I suppose that could be a good or a bad thing depending on your preference, so I'll leave it neutral. But seriously, be careful with the tea, and be careful to make sure that you don't spoil your after dinner plans by getting so loaded up on beans and cheese that you decide to just take a nap. read more

TL;DR: burritos were good, friendly staff and quick to prepare food. Enchiladas bland, salsa not great. This review is for a carry out order. Husband and I ordered the mixed dishes: burritos deluxe and the enchiladas supremas. I thought my burritos were delicious and the cheese sauce they were covered in was sooo tasty. Also received some burrito sauce in a small cup and a salad (lettuce, tomato, sour cream) on the side as part of my order, although I didn't eat it 'cause it was a bit boring. The enchiladas supremas were a bit soupy/watery and wasn't very spicy and actually quite bland. You get chips and salsa with your order and that was also okay but we didn't think the salsa was very good. Once we placed the order over the phone they said it would be ready in 10 mins and it actually was. Sadly, it was sitting out by itself by the time we got there and not under a heat lamp or anything. However, the attendant at the front desk was really friendly. Overall, we thought it was pretty average but I do want to go back for burritos some time. Los Arcos is one of those hidden, strip mall Mexican spots that has great service, even greater margaritas... I was literally across the parking lot at the Home Depot and said let me see what this place is all about. Once I pulled up I saw the 1.99 margarita special, needless to say I'll be a regular here. I already had plans to go to Taco Casa on Lakeshore so I settled for two frozen margaritas and one on the rocks along with some chips and salsa... the chips were very warm and fresh, the salsa was chunky, flavorful and fresh and the margaritas were strong how they should be. BEWARE the staff is very attentive and will fill your margarita glass up as fast as you can put them down so take your time and drink responsibly my friends!!! No Your Limits!!! read more

Though we recently moved from this part of town, I wanted to give a shout-out to this place for always having amazing staff and delicious food. Oddly enough my favorite thing to get was the Los Arcos steak with steamed veggies and rice, but they also have delicious fajitas, burritos, and quesadillas. My husband's go-to was often the pechuga con chorizo or the nachos. I really enjoy that you have a selection of standard Tex-Mex fair and more authentic dishes. The staff was always pleasant and on top of things and always went the extra mile to be nice to our kid. A real family-friendly environment. I get it. I see how you think it's ridiculous to give an Americanized Mexican restaurant five stars. I have my rationale though and I'll share it with you. It's because it's hands down the best Americanized Mexican restaurant in Birmingham. I'd rather eat at a four star authentic taco truck than here most days, but some days you just want a good American Mexican Restaurant. And when you do, you should just come here. Everything is good. They do a flaming cheese dish which is great (think fajita ingredients on a sizzling skillet that is lined with oaxaca cheese) They give diners an awesome complimentary black bean salsa dip in addition to the regular salsa they provide. The prices are great, the food is good quality, and the building is new and clean. There's something about this place that proclaims "soy el rey de restaurantes mexicanos". The margaritas are weak -- clearly the result of trying to get more for THEIR money, but this is typical in most Mexican restaurants. The chicken soup is good and fresh but for $9.50 I would have thought it should be all pulled white meat as opposed to one whole chicken leg as the only chicken in the soup. This place is terrible. We have eaten here 4 times over the past few years and have yet to have a decent bite among four diners. Cheap oily cheese product style cheese dip, stale tortillas, terrible watery margaritas, flavorless unseasoned meat, surly and near hostile servers. I have rarely had such a bad experience anywhere, but I kept thinking it was an off night because of the good reviews others (including some friends) have given. I don't see the appeal at all. Shirt version: Avoid at all costs. The disgusting food overwhelms the courteous service. The salsa was bland, and barely more than crushed tomatoes out of a can. Queso dip was just as bland, and watery, it just dripped off the chips altogether. The chile rellenos was just queso dip poured into half a bell pepper, I doubt there was a poblano pepper in the whole restaurant. The enchiladas had marinara sauce on them, and no cheese. Inside the enchiladas were large hunks boiled, bland chicken. The same hunks of bland, overcooked chicken were in the burritos and quesadillas. The beef burritos were filled with tough, chewy and awful tasting ground meat, it somehow managed to be even worse than the chicken. The manager came over when he saw our table complaining about the food, he offered to get us new items, but we had no hope that a cook who had turned out the awful dishes in front of us could fix anything. My first stop in this newly opened restaurant. Really hoping for the best. Only two other couples were in the restaurant but we were still seated next to a restless child. The server could not understand enough english to get that we both wanted water with our meals. Magaritas were weak and watery, salsa runny and bland. I did not care for this restaurant. First the staff was difficult because they apparently did not speak English. That caused several problems. Our waitress was rude and disinterested. Because of these problems I ended up with food I didn't want and didn't get some I did want. I am used to expecting variations in chili Rellenos in different restaurants, but I have never had one with a bell pepper. Not only was it a green bell pepper (which is not a chili), but it was filled with soupy bland cheese and nothing else to add flavor. Anyway, soupy cheese is disgusting. I also had refried beans and rice, which was fine, though I am imagine it would be hard to mess that up. They enchilada was very good and I wish I had gotten two and beans and rice only. I imagine that if one were Hispanic this would be a better place. The waitstaff carried on very friendly with all Hispanics in the restaurant. I just didn't care for this restaurant. read more
