As a server myself, I completely understand restaurant dynamic and how things can get busy. However, it did not seem busy this evening so I am not sure why the service suffered this much. The food was decent, although we got our appetizer at the same time as the meal. Our tacos were soggy and refills were not offered even when drinks were empty. I'm not over exaggerating when I say that we waited 25 minutes for our server to come back and drop the check. I typically lean towards tipping 25-30% with good service, so it was not a huge deal that there was an 18% auto-gratuity already added to the check. This did not make sense to me, as our party size was 2 but maybe I missed where it was stated that there was an automatic gratuity. If you're looking for authentic Mexican food in Colorado, Los Carboncitos (North location) is the spot! As soon as we walked in, I saw the Easter decorations in the hall and just knew it was going to be good, Mexican restaurants that take pride in their space always serve great food, and this place did not disappoint. The enchiladas were amazing, highly recommend! My boyfriend got the steak burrito, which was huge (you can see the size in photos) and super filling. One thing to note: if you're from Texas and used to Mexican martinis, you won't find them here, but the staff recommended a different drink, and it was pretty good. The dining room is small, and everyone speaks Spanish, which added to the authentic feel. As someone from South Texas, I was happy to find solid Mexican food in Colorado. This was my favorite meal in Denver on my weekend trip. This place is legit & authentic. Walking in you can tell it's a family owned spot & full of flavor. Our sever was very nice & attentive to our larger group. The food was all so good! I loved that they had 5 different salsas and with a good level of spice and the tortilla chips were fresh and homemade. As an entree I had the chipotle shrimp which was amazing. I have been here a few times but today was certainly the last time. The first few times were okay which is why I came back. The food was not amazing but it was pretty solid with reasonable prices and a low key vibe, perfect for a chill Mexican night. The last two times the service has gotten progressively worse. At the end of our meal we just sit there watching the waitresses talk to each other by the bar until about 30 minutes later they finally come by to close us out. Today the steak tacos where super tough and chewy, the queso which we got for the first time today was literally like melted mozzarella with some mediocre chorizo.. not at all like traditional queso. An absolute hot mess. Today we came in for a date night and the table next to us (which was a table that was also located smack in the middle of the restaurant) had a person experiencing homelessness who was allowed as customer, he was by himself eating dinner out of a takeout container while almost falling asleep, face super close to the plate, eyes closed for 10-15 min at a time and then he would perk up and eat a little. He was definitely high and it wasn't weed. We felt so bad for this person. I was on edge the entire time, concerned with the possibility of volatile behavior from a man who clearly was not doing well. Following the Broncos game, we wanted something other than fast food. As other Yelpers have shared, it's hard to find solid Mexican food in Denver. Los Carboncitos is mediocre by Arizona standards, but the best Denver has shown me so far. Los Carboncitos is located on the corner of a residential neighborhood. As such, only street parking is available. The restaurant was packed even at the late hour of 10PM. The tables are seated extremely close together where the back of my chair was touching the back of the chair of the table behind me. Music was blaring and the TVs were playing random YouTube videos and the soccer game. Complimentary chips and salsa is always appreciated, and the salsas were all pretty good- one was pretty spicy! Between the two of us, we had the pescado, chorizo, bistec, and pastor tacos. The pastor taco was surprisingly good; a good balance of the sweet you come to expect with pastor; definitely recommend! The chorizo was good as well, a touch salty (but how do you mess up chorizo?) The pescado was bland; I drowned it in salsa. The bistec (steak/carne) taco was BAD. Extremely chewy and bland. I visited Los Carboncitos for the first time on a weekday night with a group of friends. We had a great time with good food, fast service, and some nice music! We got complementary chips and lots of different salsas to try quickly after being seated, the orange and lime-green salsas were our favorites! The menu was very large but gave us lots of options to choose from. We ended up getting the beef burrito, loaded chicken burrito, beef huarache, and churros (all great picks!) The music was a bit loud, so I wouldn't recommend if trying to have a quiet conversation, but for a night out with friends it was a nice addition to the ambiance. Had the chicken tostadas Los Carboncitos. Blandest mex food I've ever eaten. A smear of refried beans on each tostada piled high with chunks of grilled chicken and melted cheese. Absolutely no flavor or spice to the chicken. Cheese was bland and had to add some of the sauce from the chips and had to ask for guac and sour cream to add any kind of flavor. It took forever for him to check on us, we waited 30 minutes after our plates were done for him to come by (it was a slow night too!!) We asked for the bill, told him again we didn't like the margarita as it was still 95% full, to which he asked again what the problem was- he dropped the check off and the $10 margarita was still on there. I asked if he could take it off, he said he had to talk to his manager..gone another 20 minutes. We walked inside, stood there another 15 while he was talking and trying to figure out how to close out a check. After all that he told us he double charged my partners card and had to get it voided and the amount will fall off in a few days, but hey he was able to get the margarita taken off! Our experience wasn't all that bad at first, but the more disappointment we had, the more the stars went down for this place. Terrible experience. On to the next Mexican food spot. I won't lie, Los Carboncitos will have you second guess where you decided to eat when you walk in. The building itself could use more polish. Without being too blunt, it feels like you are sitting in an elementary classroom with the lighting and paint colors. But as soon as you see the menu your 2nd guess will be out of the window. They have great margs and great food. This may be a considered a hot take, but I consider this top 3 Mexican places I've had in Denver. I'm also not one to order food I can make like soups but I felt compelled to here, maybe it was the smell, knowing that we would be getting 4 different kinds of salsas soon, or missing home.
