I have lived in Portland for many years and I have searched high and low for a Centeral American restaurant that offered Pupusas and Tamales, just like my moms. Let me tell you I found it. Los Chapines, is the place for some amazing Guatemalan food. I had an order of the revuelta pupusas, cheese and meat and beans. They were very authentic and good sized. They are served with a vinegar slaw and red sauce. I could have eating many more, they were just like my moms. Then I noticed that tamales were on the menu. I ordered a tamale con carne, pork tamale. Huge tamale with a nice sauce and veggies. Served with bread very traditional dish. Lights out the best tasting tamale that I have had in years. The restaurant is tucked back in the plaza next to a Dotties. Very unassuming location. They also have many other Latin favorites on the menu and a bakery! OMG, I hit the lottery. The waitress was very nice and friendly. They have about 6-8 tables on each side. If you want to leave a tip bring some cash they do take credit cards for your meal. The food was pretty tasty and authentic. Every dish that came out of kitchen looked so appetizing. I ordered Pepian (which is a specialty dish that requires rosting numerous spices, condiments and veggies ) it was super delicious and it was served with handmade tortillas. YUM! Ordered a tamal to go and received thumbs up from my daughter; who is used to amazing tamales from grandma. I am originally from Guatemala and luckily my mother is an amazing cook. Having a Guatemalan option in Portland is amazing. I can not wait to go back and order the Garnachas. Highly recommend this gem. Don't except Mexican food. read more

The food was really good and interesting. I tried some new things and really enjoyed them...the Garnachas and the Guatemalan style Chile Relleno with rice, beans, and salad. Both had good flavors and I would order them again. The employees were super nice and helpful. The menu has a really great selection and makes it easy to order even if your Spanish is rusty or if you only speak English. The bakery and store are nice too. I enjoyed my experience and will definitely go back to try more things! read more

I was there today and they have a really bad customer service... we were right in the front desk and no body said hi o something to us they were passing right next to us and no body said anything even hi or we will be with you as soon as we can.. we were full ignored by all the workers it was my husband my kid and I... If you love and miss Guatemala cuisine, thus place is for you. Pedían was very good, as were the Chile rellenos, and the empanadas. Loved the rellenitos for dessert! One of the only places I've seen serving Gallo beer. Baked goods looks good, place is very clean, cool little Chapin market with goodies. Will be back! read more

If you want traditional Guatemalan food, this is the place to be. Do not expect Mexican food because this is nowhere near what you would find at a traditional Mexican restaurant. The only bit of spiciness that you'll experience is the salsa. The tortillas are made in-house. The sweet bread is not very sweet and it is dense. The service is always slow, so do not expect to go in and out quickly. The traditional breakfast is great and is served with coffee; the Papian is served with beef or chicken; the enchiladas is a traditional picked vegetables with beef, hard boiled egg, and served on a tostada. My new favorite place. I had the carne asada plate. It was absolutely fabulous. Their beans, rice, tortillas, fire roasted jalapeños and green onions, ribeye steak meat was an absolute treat. I really enjoy well seasoned food and this was it. I had it for dinner yesterday and just finished the other half for breakfast. Really nice staff. Good bakery items. I have been to guatemala and this is as close are you are going to get to authentic Guatemalan food other then going to Guatemalan. I highly recommend caldo de gallina it's chicken soups but with their own Guatemalan spin on it, delicious! Desert wise if you want to try something I suggest you try the rellenitos. We stopped by for lunch and had the garanchas, tamale and Guatemalan tostada. The tamale was sub par. It was bland and had a drumstick bone in it. The texture was not appealing. The garanchas were ok. Still a little on the bland side but better than the tamale. The tostada was nothing to right home about. It had beef, lettuce, pickled cabbage and beets. Again, it was bland. The staff is always friendly and they have a really cozy atmosphere. It makes you feel like your family is cooking up some food for you. This is a bakery and restaurant located in the BiMart shopping plaza. They have a lot of traditional central american baked goods for a reasonable price. The restaurant serves up Salvadorian Style Food. I recently ate lunch here and ordered 5 different entrees. They bring you chips, salsa and black bean dip before you even order. The black bean dip was really good. My favorite was the plantain, but the tamale was really good too. The burrito, sweet potato and papusa was good and they do give you large portions. The service was very good too. I walked out very full. I would probably go back and be a little more adventurous. read more
