I moved to Monrovia recently from Koreatown (and USC before that)--these tacos from Los Chiles Locos were comparable to those I've had there. We had lengua, carne asada and chorizo tacos. Good carne asada taco, but if you're not too keen on spicy salsa, then I recommend going easy on the spicy salsa! The meat for the carne asada is ok and it's seasoned just fine. I like how the carne is cooked. Though I do remember coming here a long long time ago and the meat was dry as jerky. Luckily that's something of the past and the meat is tender and tasty. The smaller size taco is pretty big! I think they packed it plenty for me. This place has deals depending on the day and time, so keep an eye out for the signs and banners. Though keep in mind that most of the deals require purchase of a small or large drink. Either way, the small taco is pretty cheap, 99 cents plus tax. Well worth it. I like coming here at night because the carwash next door isn't open. It gets pretty busy during the day because cars are coming in and out of the very steep driveway. Watch out for that driveway, it has an unforgiving dip. read more

Just got the carne plate and i am sorely disappointed. All of the food smelled and tasted of a dirty dish rag and the meat was ground beef. Needless to say, we tossed the $10 plate after a few bites. I started going to Los Chiles Locos when a friend of mine recommended it. When I first saw the place, I was thinking this couldn't be it because I expected a sit-down type of restaurant. But, it was the right place and I decided to give it a try. I had the "chiles rellenos" plate and it was delicious. I've had the "milanese torta" and I have to say it is among the best I have ever tasted. I keep going back because it is truly a hidden gem. They are just a kitchen and a couple of parking spaces. I paid cash and think they take debit or visa/mc but not positive on that. Since the tacos were a buck and cheaper if you get a drink, let alone taco Tuesday special sale... its worth stopping at... I really liked the chicken tacos. They were packed with flavor. I also found that the al pastor was acceptable, loved that there were grilled onions in it, but found the meat to only be ok. When I have al pastor I am hoping for huge flavor and unfortunately, I didn't get here. Definitely they were decent, but just not as awesome as the chickie ones... I don't like that they had a pre mix of the cilantro and onions. I have a hard time eating raw onions, so I was disappointed to not get my cilantro without the onions diced in =\ The hot sauce was also so so. I really don't have high expectations for a taco stand. All I care about is that it appears reasonably clean and that the food doesn't send me to the ER. Los Chiles Locos is about two seconds from my house. It's right on the corner of Duarte (pronounced dwar-dee by the locals...even Spanish speakers...why?) and Myrtle, right next to the car wash. It's easy to drop by and pick up a couple of tacos on the way home from work or whenever. The tacos are only 88 cents after 5:PM. I've tried the pastor, asada and lengua tacos. All are pretty decent. The place looks clean--you can see practically the entire operation from the window--and they have an "A" from County Health taped up there. BTW, it's CASH only at Los Chiles Locos, but you really should be able to dig enough coin out of the sofa to eat there. I got two asada soft tacos for lunch today for two bucks and some change. The meat was tender, juicy and filled me up. There's a deal that's pretty hard to beat. read more

This place is under new management. The new owners are very kind and very polite. Their green chilaquiles are very good, and the carne asada burritos taste great as well. My husband really likes to come on the weekend to eat menudo. This is one of my favorite places to eat on the weekend. I was here this past Friday and the special was 1.99$ for bean N cheese burrito so I ordered that and 3 regular size tacos. 1 asada, 1 pastor, and 1 lengua. The bean N cheese was not my favorite at all. I rarely order this but wanted to try the special. It had mozzarella cheese instead of cheddar. The asada was marinated good and so was the pastor but it was very oily, like dripping from my hand and in between my fingers. The lengua was plain. No flavor to it. Hope this helps. read more

4 stars I can't believe nobody has yelped this restaurant yet. Yes, it's in the sleepy and unassuming city of Monrovia but I've seen quite a few customers lining up when I pass by this place and the soft tacos are pretty darn good. This place has hard shell tacos with shredded beef for a $1.75. I personally don't like shredded beef but I wanted to give this a try. I wasn't too impressed but then again, it's probably because I'm not a shredded beef type of guy. The taco needed a little more flavor as I found it a little lacking in the flavor department, even with the addition of salsa. Where Los Chiles Locos shines are their soft tacos at $1.75 a piece or if you go there after 5 pm, it's 88 cents per taco with the purchase of a large fountain drink! Oh yeah! Their meat choices are Asada, Pastor, Carnitas, Chicken, and Lengua. Cilantro and onions are also included so if you don't want those added to your tacos, you have to let them know. I usually have the pastor because I like my taco meat juicy and this place does the pastor well. I also have the fish taco too ($2.50). Some places serve the fish breaded and others filet... This place serves it breaded but I prefer it that way anyway. There are several pieces stuffed in the taco and when I'm in the mood, it definitely hits the spot. As for the salsa, the mild salsa is nothing special but it the hot salsa does the job of adding a little kick and extra flavor to the formula. The guacamole here is homemade and ok, but nothing great . The nachos are large and you can get a special nachos with meat and cheese for $6.50 but like the guacamole, it wasn't particularly great. Spectacular nachos are hard to come by anyway . . . Overall, compared to King Taco which sells soft tacos for fifty cents cheaper, this place has comparable if not better soft tacos but since it's local for me, I'd definitely rather come here. I'm not a huge fan of King Taco but I have to say the hot salsa there is pretty good. I recommend this place for a solid place for good soft tacos. I've had many tacos in my life, but I have never had a "homemade crunchy taco- shredded pork" as good as this in my entire life. And I was raised among Mexicans and had dinner with my Mexican friends and I must say that Los Chiles Locos has won my heart for the order I just mentioned above. It's just as good with carnitas, and worst comes to worst, if you're not sure which meat, you can ask for a tiny sampleto decide which meat you want in your taco. The owner of this place is incredibly professional and has been in the business for a long time. He also owns a restaurant in Monrovia or used to. I don't remember, but the food is always great. You just gotta know what to order. So if you go, you should order AT LEAST one homemade crunchy shredded pork taco and if you don't like it. Always passed by this tacos joint going to and from work. Saw signs for the prices and was intrigued. 50 cent tacos? Sure! 50 cent tacos after 8pm Fri-Sun. 75 cent tacos (must buy drink) after 5pm. Entrance to the parking off Duarte is weird coming in so watch it if your car low to the ground. Just come up the drive way slow. I asked for lengua but they didn't have it. Got 3 tacos and a horchata to go. Tacos were TINY. I mean I'm used to street tacos (King Taco, Tacos El Gordo, etc), but these were like 1/3 size smaller. I could easily eat a taco in one bite. Quality just wasn't there either. I'll take the 50 cent taco deal, but there's plenty of better taco joints in the area that for just a dollar (total, not per taco) more, you'll enjoy a better world of tacos. read more

We had tried this restaurant a couple years ago and didn't like. We passed by it again today and saw that it was under new management so we decided to give it a try again and my what a difference in taste. I got a green wet burrito and WOW the green sauce was DELICIOUS it tasted like home made. My husband got a menudo and he loved it and let me just say he's a picky eater. My son got a carne asada burrito the meat was tender and the burrito was huge. My daughter got a chicken taco and she like it so much that she asked for a 2nd one. Los Chiles Locos is a stop-and-go kind of place where you can get a quick fix for some Mexican. Given that there's a Jack in the Box right across the street, I'd look at this as a fork-in-the-road decision making process without much at stake. Their el pastor--though served up lukewarm/cold--and horchata aren't bad. Wouldn't recommend against the place, but wouldn't call it great either. NEVER EATING HERE AGAIN! I got a simple bean and cheese burrito and The first bite was ok. not too much flavor but it was ok. THEN i took my second bite and i bite down on to a rock the size of a nickel! It was a thick rock and it ended up cracking my tooth! so i call Los Chiles after finding the rock and I try to tell them that they need to check their beans because i found a rock in my food and it broke my tooth! all they said was " I dont know what to tell you" none said im sorry or anything. just "i dont know" I had to get the tooth pulled because the dentest couldnt save it. First of all, why is I can never make tacos as good as taco stands? Secondly, I am glad I took the advice of the other reviews they were funny as well as helpful. Los Chiles Locos is good. Yeah, I'm sure it's great when you're drunk at 230... but fried tires at that hour taste good. The steak soft tacos are great. The tacos come in two sizes, small (which are only .75 after 5) and regular. They ask if you want everything on them, that means onions, cilantro, and salsa. It just adds to the taste. You can get cheese, guac, and sour cream for extra, but that's all your own choice. I just started going here, and have only had the steak tacos... I'll move on the other meals this week... Located in Monrovia on the corner of Myrtle Ave. and Duarte Ave. and close to the 210 Freeway, Los Chiles Locos is tucked away across from a Jack in the Box and also next to an automatic car wash place. Parking is accessible only from one side and is very limited; however, there is a huge public parking lot a little ways down Myrtle pass the train tracks where you can park relatively close to the restaurant. They provide open spaces to eat with a few picnic tables. I went around 2:00 PM and was pleased to discover two other people eating and one person waiting to pick up his to go order. After studying their menu for a moment, I decided to go with a Pastor Burrito with no beans. The standard for this is salsa, rice, beans and meat. The food came out really quickly and I was ready to leave after ordering in about 5 minutes. I got to my car, excited to eat this burrito (craved a good pastor for the last few weeks, but haven't been able to find a place!) and dug into it. To tell you all the truth, I only got it to go because I was going to destroy this burrito. For the first bite, I was surprised at how spicy the pastor was and quite tasty. But after a few bites, I realized that the rice was really, really unimpressive. The rice was dry and somewhat bland and helped the pastor a bit, but after awhile it got tiring. The salsa was almost non-existent--seriously, only one tiny tomato piece and maybe a few sprigs of cilantro. This was definitely not what I thought it would be like. For this trip I paid $6.01. The plus side? Well, they gave me this incredibly spicy salsa with these mediocre tortilla chips along with my burrito for free. After dipping a chip in the salsa, I decided just to lay it thick on the burrito instead. Final thoughts: Worth a second trip to try their tacos which are $.88 everyday after 5 P.M. or there other special $.99 Fish Taco Tuesday. I try to be sensitive to not exaggerating in my reviews. I want to mean it when I say something is the worse I have ever had, something that rarely happens. However, this place really did have the worse street tacos I've ever eaten. I'll give them a slight break considering it was 10 o'clock on a Sunday night, which is not too long before closing I believe. So the food isn't going to be the freshest. I wasn't expecting the freshest food. I wasn't even expecting great food, although I was hoping. I just wanted something that tasted okay and would fill me up. What I got was stale tortilla and old chicken slopped together with a bit of onion and cilantro and a watery salsa. You could taste the age of the chicken; the meat was rubbery and tough. It tasted like it had been sitting out awhile and had hardened a bit. I won't be going back here. Maybe it was an isolated experience, but I don't want to risk it.
