This was such a great addition to the AYCE sushi scene in the SGV. After our first visit, we already thought it was way better than our previous favorite Aikan because of their great selection of sashimi in their dinner menu priced at $39.99. Dozo is located in the quiet Monrovia plaza next to Good fortune supermarket. So there's plenty of parking available. The interior was very beautifully designed, modern, clean and spacious. Staff were very nice and attentive. We arrived on a Sunday night for an early dinner at 4:30pm to an empty restaurant but customers slowly piled in. We loved that sashimi was included in the AYCE option because there's no AYCE restaurant in LA (at least we haven't been) that has that and the quality was pretty good. They even had unlimited ikura, raw shrimp, bluefin tuna and so much more include! Lastly, my only complaint was that they don't have half portions of the sushi rolls liked 4 pieces because that really filled us up. But we're already looking forward to our next visit! read more

$40 for AYCE sushi with a decent selection. The carpaccio was delicious (always my favorite whenever I go to AYCE spots), and the sashimi seemed very good quality. The tempura was light and airy, not at all greasy. The few rolls we tried were fine as well. Overall, Dozo's AYCE is well worth it. Definitely coming back. My only (very minor) complaints are I wish the menu had more pictures of the rolls, and I wish they had something on their menu with crispy rice (e.g. spicy tuna or hamachi crispy rice). read more

My wife and I got a stomachache immediately after we were done eating. The food quality was not great, you can tell where they try to save costs. The spider roll only had decent sized pieces of soft shell crab on the ends while the middle pieces were filled with fake crab meat. The sashimi was presented in a bowl like dish over a pile of ice. If you didn't eat the fish fast enough, the ice would melt and your fish is now swimming in ice water. For sashimi, the tuna and blue fin tuna had a lot of gristle. The scallops were not the size in the uploaded pictures like diver scallops, they were slightly larger than bay scallops. They tasted watery and they were cut in half to look like more pieces given. The freshly grated wasabi was not strong enough. The service was mediocre but only one person was handling all tables. We had to ask for water refills constantly. $40 AYCE can be spent better elsewhere read more

I have been waiting for this place to open for months. Why? Sushi is my favorite type of food and AYCE sushi restaurants are best when they first open. Thus, the anticipation. After coming back from my trip to Asia, I am ecstatic that they are open. Finally! Now, sushi at AYCE restaurants usually are not the best, but this one is made to order. I went during the soft opening so they were still working things out (paper cups) and not everything was available but I will say that they are off to a good start. I went here for dinner and the interiors are beautiful. Really nice and clean look. The staff instantly greeted us and walked through the ordering process, which is on an iPad like nearby Little Skewer. Once they fully open they are going to have a large menu, so I'm looking forward to that. The dishes we got were interesting. Some like my udon tasted like most Japanese restaurants except the dashi flavor was strong and the udon were really nice and chewy. Then some of the dishes like the beef tataki sort of tasted like it had a Chinese spin on it. What I really appreciated is the staff were very open to feedback and asked us how they could improve. I thought it was nice they want to make sure the customer is happy and even when I had suggestions that may not have made sense now that I think about it, they still listened to me haha. We arrived a little before the dinner rush and the place was only a quarter full. Young server greeted us immediately and offer us to sit wherever we want. A few minutes he came over with the menu and water and asked if we've been here before. Since it's our first time he explained the entire menu - 1 for sushi and 1 for appetizers. That's where things started to fall apart 30 mins after we order, no apps no sushi. There's about 3 guys in the kitchen and he was the only server taking care all the tables, keep in mind this is before the dinner rush. There were maybe 5 tables including us. After our appetizer and sushi arrived we had to ask for our ginger and Wasabi. I have to say the Wasabi here is different, its not the typical paste but better. After all the items came we ordered the second round and let me tell you we waited another 20 mins for apps and another 20 for sushi. At this point parties we're asking how long for their food. The quality of the fish isnt bad but if you don't mind waiting this is a good place for dinner. As theres no TV to distract you so its good to find a place that takes you back to the good old days. Decorations is pretty calm and relaxing. I'd definitely comeback again. 1 thing I find odd is the pepper salmon, I've never been to a place where they add buttery sauce on top then pepper. It throws odd the fattiness of the salmon. Throughout the entire experience the server is running around trying to accommodate everyone while push out orders. But I realized they dont have a system in place , after you're done with the sheet the server drops it to the kitchen and they proceed. This is a conflicted review. I think for many people this may be a 3. But for specific sushi diners this may be a 4/4.5. Dined for Dinner on a Friday night 5/29/26. Pretty empty. Went for AYCE $39.99 per person. $19.99 for kids. I'll start with the highlights. The main waiter cares and wants to get things right. But I think the procedures set up seem inexperienced for a sushi restaurant. Example: No dish given to dispose of edamame shells. We ordered 5 miso soups, he gave 4 to the adults and skipped my son, then brought the 2 extra to another table I had to ask the waiter for a 5th for my son. 5/5 They use fresh wasabi. I was given a small quarter sized marble of wasabi. Noticed that it was chunky, not smooth. Tasted it and noticed it was fragrant but more subtle. I don't have too much experience with fresh wasabi, outside of restaurants that put it in the fish already for you. I asked the waiter and he said yes. Fresh wasabi. For an ayce? Wow. *Tip for owners* I read a review where they negatively judged the wasabi cause they though it was a cheaper version of the normally horseradish fake. sigh. the AYCE clientele, myself included may not full appreciate the subtlety that is freshly grated wasabi. I would give an optional charge for a fresh wasabi upgrade. $1-2 dollars. The fans will LOVE it for that price. Everyone else will happily enjoy their standard wasabi and it'll save you on the margins. 4/5 Homemade soy sauce? I believe this is what I was told. Again, like the wasabi, less punch, less salty, more fragrant. But also because I wasn't used it to, figuring out the wasabi soy sauce ratio for the fish was difficult --- cause at the higher end places they do this for you. 5/5 Sashimi Salad, big hit for my dad and wife. Basically a poke salad. Large chunks of Salmon, albacore and tuna on lettuce with a nice sauce. Easy to eat, good servings of fish. My dad ate a full dish by himself then shared with my wife. Size, big enough to share, small enough to finish on your own with no problem if no one else wanted some. I don't see myself ever leaving this place w/o ordering this more than once. 5/5 AYCE Sashimi. I thought there was limit at first. It said 1 per order. What it means is tell us how many you want, you get 1 for each you order. So, as pictured, my last round I order 6 salmon, 5 bluefin, 1 albacore, 1 yellowtail. I am normally not a fan on tuna I get in the US. It often tastes bland and watery, like a tuna popsicle. My wife loved the salmon, so think and fatty and buttery. Normal pieces, tasted almost like belly pieces. The bluefin though... oh wow, it was actually good. very good. Tried to find a salmon topped one for my wife and son, but almost all of them had spicy tuna or spicy salmon inside. If someone likes the taste of fish, why cover it up? If the fish is good, why cover it up? They have a soy mustard sauce on many of them. I'm not sure if this is standard or new to this restaurant. The flavor was fine... but overwhelming. My general critique on the rolls were the recipes were not balanced. Many foods has 2-4 subtle flavors paired with a sauce too strong or a flavor too strong. The bites didn't harmonize in my mouth. They often felt confusing or unclear. Yellowtail carpaccio had a jalapeno on it. The fish flavor lasted 1 sec, the jalapeno lasted 10. Just a spritz of spice was enough. It was a jalapeno seasoned with yellowtail. 2/5 Pacing was off. I saw this in another review and this is a good description. Miso soup and Edamame came out. Good. Then 3-4 rolls came out. Short ribs + beef teriyaki (son and mom). Udon came on. No sushi yet Tempura came out. 2nd Tempura came out. More rolls. long pause. Then once most of the hot stuff was cleared, the nigiri came out. I understand its an AYCE, but its a $40 meal. As a japanese sushi meal where the peak meal is a Omakase, it can go a long for the diner's experience to have a balance to the meal. 3.5/5 Short ribs and 2/5 Beef teriyaki was over seasoned in my option. Most will get them as sides, while they serve rice and udon, I would accompany them with rice generally. So being over sauced and over salted made it unappetizing to eat. Didn't do a full 5 star just because some pieces of sushi was okay and the chicken bento was okay. The chicken bento would say if they want to make it better to grill or cook the chicken skin a bit more so there is some crispness or a bit if char to it. Checked out the new Dozo Sushi and Sake in Monrovia! They took over the old Mackey's location and the space looks great and nice interior with lovely Japanese decor. They are still in the soft opening phase, so they're getting settled in. Ordering is pretty high-tech; you use an iPad or QR code to browse the menu, which has a good mix of appetizers, sushi, hand rolls, and chef specials. I recently visited this spot to try their All-You-Can-Eat (AYCE) menu. While the front-of-house staff was excellent--warm, welcoming, and professional when they seated us just before 4:00 p.m. for the lunch rate--my experience with the sushi chef was, unfortunately, the complete opposite. ​The issues began when the chef started arguing with his own staff in front of customers, insisting that we should be charged dinner pricing despite the signage indicating otherwise. To make matters worse, after we paid our bill, the chef approached our table to scold me about the amount of food we ordered. He accused me of having too many leftovers, despite the fact that we were well within the limits posted on their sign. I asked to speak with the owner, but he was unavailable. ​Out of respect for our server, who was truly lovely, I kept my frustration in check. However, it was difficult to enjoy the meal--which was mediocre at best. Honestly, if the sushi was of higher quality, we would have finished it; the chef would be better off focusing on perfecting his craftsmanship behind the bar rather than interacting with customers. ​I won't be returning and cannot recommend this place. There are plenty of other options nearby where you can find better food, more reasonable prices, and, most importantly, be treated with respect. I recently visited this spot during their soft opening, and I was thoroughly impressed! Even though they are just getting started, they already have a solid menu with lots of great options. The food quality is excellent. We tried a variety of dishes, including the Gyudon (beef bowl), which was flavorful and generous with the meat. The tempura was perfectly fried-light, crispy, and not greasy at all. The sashimi salad was incredibly fresh, and the presentation on the Salmon Carpaccio and the Sashimi bowl (love the fried shrimp head detail haha) was beautiful. Nice and tidy restaurant. Dropped by for an early dinner around 5pm on Thursday and was seated right away. My wife and I ordered the AYCE and while trying to figure out what to order a la carte for our 2 year old toddler the owner was kind enough to drop by and tell us we could just order some appetizers(fries, noodles, etc) off our AYCE menu for him. Prices here are average. Katsu don was 12 and I think the tuna roll was 8-9? The tuna was different from other shops like a higher grade. The wasabi wasn't strong and nor was the ginger so no single ingredient was overtaking the other. My wife and I tried this place tonight for the first time. The restaurant has been closed for four months and reopened two days ago. Not sure if there was an ownership change, but they have quite a few kinks to iron out. The atmosphere is very nice, with Japanese-style decor throughout the room. This may have been the best part of the experience. They only offer an "all you can eat" dinner option for $39.95 (kids are half price). The menu is exceedingly confusing. We were seated and offered a laminated menu with quite a few sushi and sashimi items along with soups, salads, appetizers, etc., plus a "brochure" with some of the same items on it, but also a few others (such as donburi). The brochure showed prices for each item, even though most of them were not a la carte options. Two paper lists of items in checklist format that may or may not be listed on the other two menus were provided for placing your order. Donburi and soft drink options incurred an additional charge, but everything else is included in the basic charge. Order as much sushi and sashimi as you like. We kept flipping back and forth between the two menus to see what we wanted, then tried to locate them on the paper lists, with varying degrees of success. After ordering soup, salad and a couple of rolls to begin with, we realized that we should have zeroed in on the more pricey items from the brochure to get our money's worth. The food itself was just OK. Seaweed salad was drenched in dressing, one of the rolls had a flavorless eel sauce pretty much ladled over it, and the wasabi did not have that familiar kick. Shrimp shumai was good. They used imitation crab in many of the rolls, not our favorite ingredient. Our server was very friendly. However, we think he forgot to tell the kitchen of a baked roll that we ordered, as it took nearly a half hour to come out. Pacing was also a problem. We got soup, then salad a minute later, then our first roll right after that. Wasn't sure what to eat first since they were all on the table at the same time. They don't have their liquor license yet, so it was a little disappointing not to have sake or beer available to us even though they were on the menu. All in all, with the high fixed price, confusing menu process and mediocre food offerings, this is not much of a value. We probably won't return. read more

My family and I really enjoyed our dinner here. The menu offers a nice variety of dishes, and the salmon tasted very fresh. I was particularly impressed by the Gyo Don.
