Ignacio is legendary for his slow or nonexistent service, and equally famous for his ability to socialize endlessly, while simultaneously ignoring patrons, both seated and newly-entering. It simply would not be "Los Compadres" if Ignacio ever stopped screwing around, and started doing his job. And all of the customers would not have it any other way! So please be thankful you have a festive Mexican restaurant with delicious food and a truly entertaining and colorful character in the personage of Ignacio. I've been coming here with my family for over 10 years, and I'm honestly really disappointed after our last visit. The service was extremely poor, there is only one server who clearly cannot handle the workload. We waited forever to be seated, got salsa with no chips, and didn't get chips until after our meals (after asking). The food timing was all over the place, with the appetizer coming out at the same time as one meal and the rest arriving later. On top of that, the food wasn't even very warm. The biggest issue was the bill, we were charged for things we didn't order, including a charge for chips, a different nacho plate, and something called "l.Mex" with no explanation. The server was acting strange when we asked about it, adding charges after the fact and refusing to give a receipt. My first visit to this store. My inclination is to make it a regular stop when I'm in the mood for Mexican. Friendly, family run, traditional. Food served Hot and fresh. Flavors were very traditional. Not too spicy, not heavy. Each bite provided it own savory taste. The salsa served on the side was so different. It had a variety of flavors available other than the chili heat. Service was traditional and personable. Saw some reviews about individuals wanting to "get in and get out" and were upset about having to wait... I get that... but that is why there are "tacobells"... As a trained chef, I can say the food prep and service were perfect in my eyes. Their hours are set, and they are open two days a week. Parking easy enough for downtown Hayward. Well that is now over with. We just dined here tonight and our bill for 4 people, 3 carnitas taco orders that are listed for $13.99 and one à la carte tostada came out to over $120.00. I asked Ignacio why is there a $7.99 charge added onto every item when it said that the tacos were $13.99. He told me prices have gone up. I said you should probably let people know that. In return he said we did and flips the menu over and in small almost all worn off writing it says prices are subject to change at any time. So you are telling me you can make up the price on everyone's meals as you see fit?!?!? There is a big difference to thinking you are paying $13.99 to $22.00 for tacos. Absolutely delicious! The place is only opened Fridays and Saturdays which I learned the hard way by driving there on multiple occasions and finding out they were closed. This place is probably the best Mexican food in Hayward. The beans are so flavorful and the owner is so kind. Really a nice environment in a slightly hidden part of downtown. read more

There was only one server who ignored me for over five minutes to be seated when there was less than 10 customers in the restaurant. The complementary tortilla chips were covered in salt and uneatable. I ordered the chili relleno and enchilada combo plate. Chili relleno smelled and tasted foul I did not eat it. Their homemade salsa is delicious and make sure you buy a bottle to take home. My sister was back in town for the holidays and was craving Mexican food. I found Los Compadres via Yelp and thought it would be a good spot to check out. We arrived a little past lunch time and there were just a few parties dining inside. It took a moment for the owner to notice and seat us, as well as to give us menus, but it wasn't an issue at all. My sister ordered the 2-item plate with the Cripsy Taco (crispy corn tortilla filled with chicken or shredded beef, lettuce, cheese & mild taco sauce) and Enchilada (corn tortilla rolled with chicken or beef or cheese and onion topped with red mole sauce and melted cheese) that comes with rice, beans, and a salad, while I got the one-item plate with the burrito. Food didn't take long to come out and it looked great. Everything was very appetizing. Portion sizes were decent and prices were fair, and the owner who was helping us out was friendly and welcoming. Overall, we both had a nice time at Los Compadres and would return in the future. They are currently opened on Fridays and Saturdays from 12pm-6pm, and there is free 2-hour street parking. read more

We recently discovered this hidden gem right in our backyard. It's located in Downtown Hayward and has been around for many decades! Tons of free street parking. They're open only Friday and Saturdays and their prices have changed relative to what you see online. Despite the increase in prices, the pricing is still very reasonable for the quality and portions you receive. I heard service is slow but that's because it's mostly run by one person at the front. My husband went to order takeout on a Friday before 5PM and it took about 20-30 min to get the foods. Nice service but he does see how slow the service can get. Fortunately we weren't in a rush and planned accordingly. We ordered grilled super carne asada burrito and two item platter with crispy shredded beef tacos and chile verde burrito. Both items came out to about $30 including tax. Not bad. The burrito was so flavorful! It's pretty big and juicy. We killed that entire burrito. My two item platter was delicious - the rice and beans were good. Some may say its salty but love the extra sodium and I think I taste garlic? I tasted lots of garlic which I love in my foods. The chile verde burrito was a bit soggy due to the meat but it held up fine. Gobbled it down quickly. The crispy taco was still crispy and delicious with the hot sauce. We also got a bag of chips to go for a couple bucks with sauces. The sauces were SO GOOD.The chips were salty but as I said, I love sodium. They were crispy and went well with the sauces. I wish they provided more sauces but it costs extra. The meal tasted like something delicious from your grandma's kitchen. It hit all the right spots and was comforting. They said it would be ready in 20mins, but it took about 30minutes to get our order. They were apologetic. I was a little bummed because they said they no longer have fish tacos, they haven't sold them in a long time. They were listed on the menu on their own website. This place looks like a hole in the wall but they're family owned and they've been here since 1966. They are only open Friday and Saturday 12-6:30pm. Free 2 hour street parking on both sides of the street in front of the restaurant. Food was good and presentation was nice, even for takeout. The rice was excellent but I had to pick out a few onions. Everything stayed crispy by the time we got home. read more

My family and I have been eating here since the 80's! Our favorite place for sure. Today, downtown Hayward had a Latino Jazz Festival. We got there at 4 today, one other couple in here eating. My Mom is 80 and is handicapped; we asked to sit at the Handicap table (marked handicap by them) Ignacio tells us no, sit at the middle table half chairs/booth - really bruh? We complied but reluctantly. He told us they are having a Jazz festival and he wants to keep the table free because it fits a party of 12. What??? Refuse a handicap person the handicap table????? Just crazy!!!!! Next, mind you we know what's up because we would talk to a server that no longer works there. Ignacio plays games with the chips and salsa! When ever you eat here, he brings the salsa and he makes you wait for the chips, not because he's busy because he wants to. Like I said, we were there very early at 4 o'clock today and it wasn't busy!!!! Ignacio came over and took our order for our dinner, and we asked for the bean dip appetizer. He brought over our drinks, with no straws, and still no chips. What the????? I'm pretty sure we waited about 20 minutes for the chips, every other Mexican restaurant we go to around the bay area; you are always greeted with chips and salsa. I never understood why he has to play this game. It is so frustrating!!!!! I feel like he gives us the cold shoulder it's pretty rude. Next up my order, I ordered two enchiladas and taco dinner. I had a sidebar with my family and said I want to take one enchilada home. Do you know when I got my dinner? There was only one enchilada on the plate. I asked him where is my other enchilada he said oh don't you want that to take to go? Well no, that's not how I wanted it. So people were starting to come in at this point, he was getting pretty busy mind you he pretty much is the only waiter... we watched how the chips and salsa and drinks were being served up to them, pretty much the same experience we were getting. I watched one couple, go and get their own menus. Next stop is, we are done with our meals, he never came over to check on us. We had to flag him down to get a to go box and at that he did not bring my one single enchilada that was hanging out in the kitchen. When he brought the containers over, he tried to take my plate with the rice and beans on it. I said, no I want my enchilada that you got in the back to go with this. Lord help us! The bill! Again, we have to flag him down to get the bill. There was three of us with an appetizer three sodas, and that is $70. We questioned it so we read the bill and there was an item on there that said some weird code saying 3 @3 99 each. Well, what is this? Mind you the ladies that came in after us and got their bill before us, had an error on their bill and he was over there trying to fix it at the cash register. I walked up to pay and I questioned the charge and he said oh it is for the extra items you got excuse me? What are you talking about, I'm thinking he is talking about my one damn enchilada so confusing when you have an extra entry on your receipt. He's trying to explain it to me and I said no we only had one extra item at that but this doesn't make any sense because they have a two item dinner and a three item dinner. He ended up giving me a credit for 3.99 which still not correct!!! I just went with it because I'm not gonna argue with him. We are moving to Texas in two days. This is the only reason I'm putting a bad yelp because I really do enjoy the food but today it was not the same. The salsa was not the same. It was sort of watery. The chips didn't seem the same either. I really enjoy my taco and enchilada. The food is delicious, but the service is slower than a turtle. FYI. None of my family ever wanted to eat here with us anymore because of these issues. This dinner took more than 1 1/2 hours. It would be great if the booth I had to sit in wasn't slanting downhill. Took my wife here for Valentine's Day yesterday and had a rather negative experience in the following order: host does not make eye contact with us once while seating us and taking our drink orders. I ordered one drink. The server comes out and I ordered three appetizers and two chile verde plates for my wife and I. The server tries to convince us to only have one appetizer instead of three because he says it's "too much food". I say it's no problem we can eat it all. He brought out the first appetizer with a long black hair on it. They say sorry we will make you another one which they never did. They brought out the other two appetizers and our chile verde plates and we ate them. I ask for the bill and he did not charged me for one out of the three appetizers I originally ordered. However he charges me for a second drink that was never ordered. He corrects it and we pay and leave. The food was not bad but I have had better out of certain taco trucks or smaller taquerias. The customer service was absolutely horrible. You'd think for a restaurant that's been around for 59 years the customer service would be better. Hopefully this review can prevent this kind of experience from happening to someone else. Family run, been around since the 60's, and some of the best, homemade Mexican food I ever had! This is not your basic chain restaurant, so don't expect fast-food speed. It's a nice, relaxing place where the owner will take good care of you. Lots of locals enjoying authentic, Mexican family recipes, fresh and delicious! And lots of food for a great price. I'd eaten at Los Compadres many years ago and thought it was pretty good, but then realized La Imperial - the now defunct place next door was the better of the two side-by-side Mexican restaurants? Walked in last night and was greeted by friendly Ignacio. Nice guy, but terribly slow. Dropped some salsa on the table, returned to take our drink order...then nothing. No chips, no drinks...waiting, waiting...15 minutes later, chips and drinks to go with our salsa. Strangely, the food came out quickly, but nothing else happened with any speed. Shredded beef tacos were a bust - super thin, hardly any filling. Burritos looked good, hard to imagine they cost less than the paltry plate of tacos I ordered. Fish tacos was okay, but nothing to write home about. In all, super slow with mediocre food (shredded beef tacos were poor). Something needs to change or Los Compadres won't last much longer. 52 years of business isn't a compelling enough reason for me to return. Oh, and the $2 extra chips are ridiculous. I wondered if the slow delivery of chips intended them to arrive seconds before the entrees, thus keeping the mongrels from eating too many? The interior is very tired, and the bright fluorescent lighting doesn't help. The owner is nice enough, but the food is terribly boring Sysco faire. I would add a photo but it was so good we ate it too quickly. I ordered the three tacos , beef chicken and potato. Each was super flavorful and delicious. Tortillas are fried in-house and salsa is definitely full of flavor with traditional spices not commonly found at restaurants. my boyfriend ordered the Chipotle Chicken Salad. He said the greens and onions were not soggy and fresh. The chipotle on the chicken breast was full of flavor and made the salad tasty and filling. ETHEL FOREVER!!!!!!! Something amazing happened at this restaurant. 4 friends just enjoying our lunch date and laughing out loud. After our meal, the lady who was sitting behind us comes over and says that she loved seeing us enjoying our day and it's the only laughter she's heard all week (this happened on a Saturday). Then, she dropped $40 on the table, basically paying for our meal! We've decided to call her Ethel, but unfortunately, we doubt we'll be seeing her again. I don't even know if I'd recognize her if I saw her again. Anyway, the restaurant was 3 stars for me. The service was great - they were kind and sweet. But I'm not sure I'd come back for the food.
