ETHEL FOREVER!!!!!!! Something amazing happened at this restaurant. 4 friends just enjoying our lunch date and laughing out loud. After our meal, the lady who was sitting behind us comes over and says that she loved seeing us enjoying our day and it's the only laughter she's heard all week (this happened on a Saturday). So my friend and I (Hispanic) go to this nice looking authentic place. When we sat down the server didn't seem happy to see us. When the server set down the salsa, I asked him if we were going to get any chips, he said no, that it's a $2 charge. When my friend and I were ordering he was really rude. I'm vegetarian so I asked if there was anything vegetarian because the menu was overwhelming with good food and he didn't smile at my compliment, he actually let off a loud sigh because he had to show me what was vegetarian on the menu. When I asked to get el max burrito with veggies he said it didn't come with veggies... even though it clearly said on the menu, instead of meat. When the food came out, my burrito looked more like a bean and cheese burrito & my friend who ordered carne asada got something else. Also, this establishment seems rather racist because the pictures on the wall (exiting the bathroom) were filled with mostly white-washed people. Another thing I noticed was that we didn't receive chips with our salsa, but clearly in the pictures (on the wall) show customers ready to order with chips and salsa on the table. Found this place today and it did not disappoint! They were super busy, I ordered when I got there but next time I would call ahead of time so the wait time isn't too long. Not much I can rate. Been living down the street for 6 years so decided to give it s try. Walk in and it's almost empty. Wait 5-7 minutes before we are "greeted" and told to pick a talk. Then the guy followed us and set down menus. Walked away and got salsa, no chips, and didn't ask us if we'd like anything to drink. 10 minutes at least go by, he finally comes out of the back and sets down food at the one other table occupied. We were ready to order & thirsty as well as hoping for the chips for our salsa. But to our surprise, he turns- picks up his tray and heads to the back. We sat for another few minutes and decided if this was s sign as to how our food would go and the rest of the service we would be better going to El Taquito down the street. Deadass went here like a year or so ago because I saw it on and episode of Bosch season 3 (it's a great show. Watch it). The atmosphere was nice and intimate and the food was amazing. I had a steak burrito and my sister had tamales. We spilt both and both were amazing! Service was good and staff was good as well. No complaints, just good food. The food was not flavorful at all. The male waiter was rude while my MIL was asking for veggie options "we are old fashioned restaurant and don't make substitues". AND big AND. .my MIL specifically asked for whole beans but he gave her refried beans with lard in it. No apology, no let us remove it from your tab. The place has been here 50 years and the service I will say is very slow. It is a family owned restaurant and the sister and brother are the servers. I ordered the fiesta salad and it's very good however it needs some sort of dressing that comes with it. The thousand island dressing is excellent and I highly recommend it with any of the salads you order. The carnitas are served only on Saturdays and is very good. The tamale is only Beef but is also very good. I would say though they DO NOT serve margaritas only beers, sangria and wines. I have been coming here for since I was a child so it's our go to when we head to Hayward, however I will say it can be "hit or miss". The Pork Chili Colorado does have a lot of fat, but everything else was outstanding. It you can handle the quirks, it's a nice place to eat. read more

One of my biggest irrational fears and concerns about the future that afflict me more often than is Normal has been what will happen when I'm 50 and I need LC? Will you still be there? Your best bet is just to go to chipotle if you are in that godforsaken town cursed by John Bidwell himself. Had lunch here with friends after reading the reviews. While the atmosphere was pleasant, the service friendly, and the crowd small, the food was just "OK. Nothing to write home about. Perhaps it was my choice - I had the "super burrito". It was plenty big for two (we split it) but we both agreed it was "plain". Our friend got a chimmy changa which they enjoyed and again, was plenty big. The prices were reasonable. Food is great for the price you pay for. Mini grilled meat tacos are a bit dry since they separate the toppings from the tacos for you, but for 1.33/taco, I don't mind it as much as others might. The carne asada quesadilla is huge and full of meat filling, and the chimichanga is a pretty filling portion too. Great cheap eat I went in to order instead of ordering off UberEats because I wanted to avoid all the fees, bitch for myself and for them. Once I finished ordering a chimichanga and a taco platter, I noticed that my total was a bit high but the receipt doesn't show how the items are priced. While waiting for my food, I checked uber eats to see how much it would've cost me to have it delivered and it was somehow cheaper, no discounts added and with a 1.49 delivery fee. Me and my wife decided to try out los compadres since it's close to where we live. We ordered camarones a la diabla (spicy shrimp) and the shredded beef nachos to go. As you can see in the picture, they take the time to count exactly 8 shrimp, I even called to confirm because of how empty the container looked. Rice was average, salad is whatever, and this costs $14.99. Doesn't make sense to me, shrimp tasted average as well. Nothing special about the nachos either, meat was dry, portion was good but not satisfying in my opinion. Not planning to go back again. The food at Los Compadres is quite tasty. However, it's not tasty enough to make up for the poor service. The "main" waiter, who is one of the owners, makes it clear that you're not doing him any favors by eating at his restaurant. He comes to your table only to take your order, bring your food, and bring your bill. You have to hunt him down and ask for soda refills, which he makes clear he's not thrilled about giving you. If you politely ask for more chips, he'll bring them - But not before he gives you a sigh and a dirty look. We were long-time Los Compadres patrons. We went there once a week for YEARS and always brought friends or family members with us. We always left 25% tips and never "bothered" the staff with special requests. We now only go there once in a very great while, as I have a hard time supporting a business - even if it's family owned - that doesn't seem to appreciate MY business (We waited 45 minutes for our bill during one of our last visits. It seems that Los Compadres doesn't appreciate longtime, loyal customers...). If you visit Los Compadres, ask for Roxanne. She's a friendly, helpful server that makes eating there a treat. Ironically, she's not even a member of the "Los Compadres Family" but treats the customers - especially the loyal ones - as if SHE is in fact the owner. I'd visit there more frequently if I was guaranteed to have Roxanne as my server, but whenever we enter, the owner always swoops in before we head to Roxanne's side. One thing that is not lacking in Hayward is Mexican food, but despite every other business being a Mexican restaurant or taqueria, there isn't that much GOOD Mexican food. So, we decided to give Los Compadres a whirl and just hoped they didn't use processed cheese or fatty, nasty meat. As I bit into the burrito that was the size of my head, I was excited to taste one very delicious burrito indeed. All our food was very tasty. The restaurant itself is just so darn adorable too. I love the colorful tile tables. There were tons of regulars there that got a warm greeting as they walked in. I left Los Compadres singing in my head 'Sometimes you want to go Where everybody knows your name, and they're always glad you came.' We'll definitely be back so I can one day walk in and have them yell "Lilly!!" The only thing I was really disappointed about was no margaritas. Here is another typical Mexican Restaurant with bland Mexican rice, salty meats, re-fried beans with extra lard and the infamous canned pato sauce which they try to pass for enchilada sauce. We arrived 15min before the restaurant was about to close. We ordered the tortilla soup for starters and some beef and avocado taquitos. We where expecting beef/avocado taquitos. You know avocado mixed in with the beef... uhhh no. It was a taquito with pure avocado and one with pure beans and beef. It was the oddest thing to have warm avocado. The tortilla soup was lacking tortilla strips I only had two which where floating at the top. It was more of a chicken soup. For my main dish I had the three combination plate. Chile Relleno, Chile Verde Burrito, and Cheese Enchilada. The chile of course was smothered in that canned pato sauce or some generic canned sauce. The burrito was not what I was expecting. It was chile verde wrapped in a flour tortilla. It was missing rice, beans and cheese. The chile verde was spicy and the meat tender but very salty. The waitress had run out of horchata and we could not get half flour and corn tortillas. It was one or the other no substitutions. I will let that one pass since it was close to closing time. The only part I liked about the meal was the chips and salsa. The chips where warm and extra crunchy. The decor is very 1960's Mexico and the booths look as if they have not changed since then. What does need to change is the lighting and the ceiling. It reminded me of an old cafeteria or a classroom. I'm sure there are better Mexican joints around Hayward. They have a great lunch menu and the portions are HUGE!! I got the chicken quesadilla and it came with a side of rice, beans and salad. Their homemade dressing is similar to thousand island. My coworkers got the half order fiesta nacho. Let me tell you about these nachos- they're a dream come true because EVERY CHIP HAS A TOPPING! That's right- they build the nacho on top of the chips. Huge disappointment. The food is just poor, plain and simple. The staff was very nice and the service was good, but we could not wait to leave. Guacamole - tasted like the avocados had turned a while ago. Chile Colorado - very little meat, very little flavor, looked worse. Chicken Fajitas - didn't even understand what was going on with this. Just some grilled chicken tenders on a plate with sliced beefsteak tomatoes and bell peppers. Didn't resemble fajitas at all and nobody could eat it.
