I am from Texas and on my second visit to SLC. A colleague recommended this place and went because I was hungry and close by. When I arrived, I was promptly seated, but it took a while for a server to take my order. Honestly, I was frustrated, but when my server made it over, he apologized for the wait and took care of me....even though he was EXTREMELY BUSY! The chips and salsa were great, beer was cold...and wait for it...the entree was freaking EPIC. Remember, I am from Texas and I just put every Mexican restaurant in my state on notice...and this fat boy has been to many! I had the Mar y Tierra and I ate every single bite. I did not enjoy my trip to this restaurant. I found the inside very dingy, dirty and needing of multiple repairs. I saw old tables and falling apart chairs. The menus were dirty. The kitchen was incredibly loud so it was uncomfortable sitting in there and listening to the dishes slamming around. The food was overpriced, and not that great. Two very different experiences, spread out over about a year, but I've enjoyed each visit and love finding Tex Mex food in SLC. The first time I came here I was with a veteran. She's from Texas, and she chose this spot because she loved the one by her house. She had some insights into the menu, and told me to get queso on everything. Not bad advice. She said she tries to convince her first dates to take her there. I think she's setting some kind of record. I hadn't talked to her in months and she recently told me she should just set her mailing address to the restaurant. That's a hearty endorsement. I haven't heard from her since--she may have just moved in. On that trip I got the stuffed avocado and it was a fun dish, but the avocado part wasn't quite there for me, texture-wise. But that's okay because there's a big menu and lots to like. I've tried the guacamole and it's incredible, so they give avos their due. Don't overlook the non-traditional stuff. Yes, tacos are fine. But I've sampled some of the more intricate dishes (chicken, fish) and really was surprised at how good they are. The second visit was more of a catering thing. Buffet style. And it was super fast and simple, with meats, beans, rice, and queso. Warm tortillas to stuff them in. Pretty straightforward stuff but they handled the lunchtime crowd of us with ease. I like that there's Tex Mex around. This was our first time visiting Los Cucos Mexican Cafe, and we were not disappointed! We just so happened to come on Tuesday, which is discount margarita night (Mondays and Tuesdays). The margarita was huge and super tasty. I had the shrimp tacos, which were fantastic, and came with white rice and a tasty bean soup. The other members of my party got fajitas, which they really enjoyed. The complimentary chips and salsa were delicious, the chips weren't warm but they definitely tasted fresh. I order some carnitas , and when the order came it look like meat skewers, the carnitas themselves were ok I guess, why serve a cold tomatillo sauce with it?? Does not make sense?? Rice was awful! After being seated and ordering appetizers it literally took 30 minutes for them to come back to take our main order. 45 minutes later the food comes out and they messed up on my sister in laws main dish. 15 minutes later they returned with the correct item. After we ordered desserts it took them 30 minutes to come pick up the check. Notice that the 30 minutes happened 2 different times and I brought it up with the server multiple times and it didn't seem to help. I'd prefer the bar side because it's cooler, and it's smaller and it feels more intimate. The food is absolutely delicious, it's authentic to Mexican food and you know this by the way that they serve their salsa. For some reason and Utah a lot of the salsas that are served in restaurant taste and have a consistency of Tostitos. The moment you sit down you are served chips with three different kinds of salsa and honestly they were really really flavorful. Finally found our Tex-mex food! After living2 years in Houston, coming back to Utah and finding a place similar to " Lupe Tortilla" and such was a tough task! Finally found it last Sunday! This was my first visit to this restaurant. The food is excellent. The menu has good variety and several seafood dishes. My dinner was a tilapia topped with a crabmeat mixture. It was very good. My companion ordered the chalupa's and they were also delicious. The restaurant is large and roomy. There are TV screens all around so this is a great place to watch the big games. My only critique is that our waiter was a bit slow and not too attentive. At the end we were handed the wrong check. That being said I will be happy to go back to this restaurant any time. read more

Having transplanted from Texas about a year ago, we've been desperate to find a decent TexMex place in town. There's some authentic MexMex places, which we also enjoy, but so many of the Mexican places around serve California style Mexican, where the meat it wet and unpleasant (to us anyway). And why does nobody have queso?! Fast forward to Los Cucos. The restaurant is also a transplant, from Houston, and they do TexMex like they were made to. Finally! Terrific queso! They serve it with fried flour chips instead of corn chips which may be a little weird, but is SO good! Great prices for their enormous servings. We always take something home and eat it for a few days. Brought visiting family here and they enjoyed it as well. It is a large restaurant with plenty of TVs and room for groups. You can make a reservation online, but so far we've never really had to. We love this place and the staff has always had a great sense of humor and exemplary service. Whether I am dining in or having a takeout my experience here has always been very pleasant. The ambiance of this place is pretty casual. Great diversity of customers with a large amount of seating. This place can get decently loud with various conversations, laughter, and the music that plays in the background. All the servers I have had thus far have been super amazing and very patient and kind. They always have a smile on their face and I can tell the cultural environment of this place is pretty awesome. This place serves tortilla chips plus their homemade salsas (red and green). These are hands down one of the top best chips and salsa I have had here in Utah! The chips aren't stale and the salsas just have this magical aura taste to them that makes you keep wanting for more! I always order the same meal and it is the mixed burrito. This burrito is AMAZEBALLS! It is a mix of chicken and steak, refried beans, and a few other goods! The plate also has rice and lettuce creating a nice combo plate! The burrito is smothered in Chile verde and some type of salsa that makes it super delicious!! I always enjoy coming to eat at Los Cucos and usually recommend it for anyone around the area. I made a reservation here for Saturday night at 5 pm, I figured it would be quite busy. Our party of seven was our family of 5, two adults and 3 kids, then another couple. It was a busy night so we took time to order and get the kids set up in their high chairs with placemats. We got our food ordered and chips and salsa galore to eat. They were very kind to accommodate my children with high chairs and foam to go cups. Everyone got their meals except my daughters and me. It was maybe 10 minutes or so before our waiter came to ask if everything was good and I had to ask him if they were bringing the other two entrees out. He was nice to go check and bring it out as soon as possible. My husband always gets their poblano steak fajitas, they are divine. I decided to try the deep fried avocado stuff with cheese and beef it was good except the avocado part. The avocado wasn't ripe and kind of hard but everything else was delicious. I come in and they sit me down and they know my order and they do not bring a menu to the table. Rachel is my waitress most of the time and makes my visit rememberable. The salsa verde that came with the chips was very one note. The combination nachos ($8.99) were nothing noteworthy and felt overpriced for how they tasted and what you were getting. We got a size small and it came with 6 chips loaded with various proteins, along with some tomatoes, shredded lettuce, sour cream, and guacamole. For entrees we got the seafood al vapor ($23.99) and the fish cancun ($21.99). The fish filets were, to their credit, very flavorful and moist. The shrimps and scallops were also incredible. Frankly, the scallops might've been better than the fish. The side dishes of beans, rice, and pico de gallo however, were simply average. The service was generally attentive, if somewhat slow. Overall, because everything was so expensive, the appetizer didn't feel worth getting after the fact, especially because it didn't even taste very good. Let me say this is our first time back since they reopened and we WILL NOT be back! We will tell everyone we know not to go. They are unprepared for the volume of customers, and they are completely unapologetic for the poor, delayed service. After waiting almost 20 minutes at our table at 4:20 in the afternoon, the e asked someone passing by if we had a waiter. Then, a waitress came and said"I'm sorry, we are just really busy and I'm really busy. I will be back" it was another 15 minutes before we got drinks, another 20ish to get queso and the same to get food. At 4:20 in the afternoon it took TWO hours for 3 people to eat. One thing that really bothered me was the Tableside guacamole. If you have ever been to Los Cucos, you probably saw the cart going from table to table making fresh guacamole. In fact, this tableside guacamole is the whole reason we were excited to go. The guacamole is $15 for probably 1- 2 avocados, but you get to tell them how spicy you want it, and they make it there with your input, so the experience is really what you are paying for. Not anymore! They still have it on the menu, but they make it in the back just like every other restaurant, so I asked about it. A manager in a bright pink blazer came and explained they don't have room for the cart since they have packed the tables so close together. So. I explained it was really false advertising to continue to call it Tablesise and advwrtise it as customized when it is NOT. She just said, well, I can remake it if you want but that's all. The one they brought was so spicy I couldn't eat it. I declined, but she still charged me for it. She said she would be back to check if we were ok after our food came, but we never saw her again. So, if you are expecting the Los Cucos you remember, this is NOT it. Just don't! Mi Rancho on 2920 or Lupe Tortilla across the street are definitely better options. read more

0 stars wouldn't be low enough. Negative stars would be a much better way to describe this absolute disaster. Made reservations for 8 of us but when our party arrived they were lied to by the "Manager" up front and told we didn't have a reservation. When I then showed up I was then told that we did have a reservation but now it was past the 10 minute deadline and so they gave away our table to a group of 10 that had reservations. (This tells me they didn't have enough tables to seat both reservations) Rather than correct this mistake they made it our fault. She told me she was getting someone else to speak to (also a lie) and then took that back and said it was only her. Continually was rude and kept calling me "honey" and "baby" then at some point started accusing me of "screaming at her" which I wasn't. I did however call her out on her BS and expressed that I expected her to own and fix her mistake. I explained that there was something along the lines of 50 people standing around us so I was making sure she could hear me. But then proceeded to threaten to call the cops! This was after she implied there would be physical violence if I didn't drop the matter. Instead of just owning her mistake and fixing a problem, she decided the better alternative was to lie/threaten and ultimately cost her business the money that the 8 of us were going to spend. Will never be going back and judging from other reviews on here this is common for them and the food would have been trash anyway. To Karin, thanks for being a ridiculously unprofessional bitch and saving me from having to deal with the rest of crap that happens in your restaurant. (Including apparently, cockroaches). This yummy restaurant is pretty spot on, especially for their fish! I know you would think that if you're not very Mexican-food-savvy, but these guys do fish right! I love Mexican food, and I felt like this place was very good. The 2 salsas they brought out with the chips were super delicious!! I got the fajitas a las cucos, with chicken and beef.. I ended up liking the beef best, but both were super good! I felt like they were very reasonably priced. The refried beans were not the best... which is one of the defining menu items at a Mexican restaurant, in my opinion. My son got the 4 taquitos plate, but really wanted a side salad, so per our request, they put all the "toppings" on the side. We also got the fried ice cream which was beautifully presented! Although my favorite part of the dessert was the fresh raspberries and the cinnamon/sugar tortilla shell! The shell of the ice cream just tasted like corn flakes, which was a little disappointing to me. read more
