There are only 2 things that are consistent about Los Hermanos: The place will be filthy and you will be treated like trash. Other than that, nothing is ever the same. I go here about once a month. Sometimes I get a huge serving of meats/veggies for $13. Sometimes they barely fill the container and charge me $22. Sometimes the food is fresh. Sometimes the meat is dry and the rice (rice!) has oil pooling on top. Today for lunch I got a plate of rice, veggies, and quarter chicken. Not a ton of food. Cash register read $15 (already too much). I handed the cashier $20. Then he pressed a button and the total was $22.40 and said that it wasn't enough. I asked why it was so much. No answer. I asked again. He looked out the window ignoring me. So now he has my food and my money. I gave him the extra $3 and left. IF you decide to eat here, ORDER ONLINE. Don't expect the food to be ready when you get there (it won't), but at least its harder for them to take advantage of you. read more

Delicious!!! If Yelp would let me just leave that as a review I would. No other words are really needed. My wife and I went in hungry after totting our 10 month old around the zoo all afternoon and still couldn't even finish our generous servings. The staff was extremely helpful in making selections and even came by to make sure we were satisfied. While everything was delicious the pork is hands down the best. So now that I have officially tried everything on the menu, I can finally write my review: Los Hermanos is generally the first place I think of for food whenever I am in the Columbia Heights vicinity. The food is very good and the service is always on point. The guys who own this place (all Dominican, obviously) are so nice and very friendly whenever I visit. This place definitely has a neighborhood family eatery vibe to it. In fact, it reminds me of many of the mom-and-pop eateries that I visited in Higuey, Dominican Republic when I traveled there recently. A lot of the eateries in DR pretty much follow the same exact format: lots of chairs, minimal decor, simple menu, and assembly-line style food in which you can pretty much load up with food for a set price. As far as the food goes, my favorite items have to be: stewed chicken (mostly dark meat, sometimes if you catch them when they just finished a fresh batch, you can get some wings if you prefer white meat), the meat literally just falls right off the bone; pulled pork (this is my absolute favorite but this item is not available every day since it takes so long to make); pork ribs (wonderfully flavored, easy to pull right off the bone); pork chops; queso frito (basically like a big mozzarella stick made with Latin "white cheese"); and the sweet plantains. The mangu (mashed green unripened plantains) and salami are notable as well. Also, the arroz con gandules (rice and peas) isn't bad, but it's not necessarily the best rice and peas ever, sometimes it can be a little dry if it has been sitting for a while). All of this talk about Dominican food definitely makes me miss the Dominican Republic more and more each day, especially for the amazing food. Nevertheless, until I can get back to DR, Los Hermanos will serve as a wonderful substitute. read more

My husband and I stopped in Los Hermanos on a Thursday evening after finding rave reviews here on Yelp when I searched for restaurants in the Columbia Heights area. Honestly, I would have never stopped in this place had it not been for reading about it on Yelp. It's not much to look at from the outside, although it is located conveniently not too far from the Columbia Heights metro stop and a small mall with a Target, Best Buy, Marshall's and a couple others stores. However, it's in an area I wouldn't personally frequent by myself late at night. Anyway, Los Hermanos is the kind of place that lives up to the age-old adage, "never judge a book by its cover." The service and the food were both top notch. This is definitely a place to come when you're VERY hungry and craving comfort food. It was my first time trying Dominican food, and I loved the warmth, strong flavors, and spice levels. As specified in many other reviews, this place is family-owned and operated, and it shows. From the friendly brothers that man the cafeteria-style food counter to the little old lady who doesn't speak a lick of English that comes to bus the tables, the entire atmosphere of the place gives off the family vibe. Since it was our first time visiting the restaurant, my husband and I asked a lot of questions about the various dishes (you get to choose two "sides" and two meats). The portions are enormous, by the way. The guys behind the counter were helpful, patient, and friendly, gladly recommending dishes and helping us create the perfect meals. I had the mashed green plantains (probably my favorite thing on the plate - they were savory and delicious, reminded me a lot of mashed potatoes but BETTER), yellow rices with peas (no beans for me), the ribs, and the pulled pork. I also asked for a side of their hot sauce which is a green, very spicy, absolutely perfect hot sauce. I used it on everything on my plate. The guys behind the counter dish everything onto your gigantic plate, you pay, and then you choose a seat somewhere in the restaurant. This place takes me back to my days as a kid growing up Queens when I used to hustle to El Rey on Hillside Avenue during my lunch break working at Kew Gardens Cinemas. I love Dominican food, and if I was willing to go out of my way to ride the F Train from Union Turnpike to Sutphin Blvd for some pollo con aroz, a 10 minute drive to Columbia Heights to re-capture a piece of "back-in-the-day" is no big deal. Los Hermanos is a bit of Washington Heights, Corona, or the Bronx plopped down in Washington, DC. It's the real deal, and the food is as legit as it gets. The cafeteria style dining is a nice touch, and exactly how I remember things back at El Rey. My wife, brother, and I had a fantastic Sunday meal during which we sampled a wide variety of authentic Dominican dishes. The stars of the show were the plantains, stewed beef, yucca, and standard rice and beans; overall, each and every single dish is worth sampling. This a place I plan on coming back to many, many times. The tables may be sticky, and a lack of menus and clearly marked items may be a bit intimidating, but the friendly staff will give you all the guidance you need. read more

I love this place! I just can't eat here all the time or I'd be fat! The employees are always super nice, the food is excellent, and the atmosphere is definitely authentic. The food is served cafeteria style, where you select the type of rice, beans, meat, and veggies. You don't have to wait for the food, unless you order something like mofongo or a dish that they don't have out. I'm half puerto rican and I think the food here is super awesome and authentic. I used to pass right by this place when I first moved to Columbia Heights because it didn't have a sign in the front and looked kind of shady. First time having Dominican food, and it was realllly delicious. It really reminded me of my trips to Puerto Rico and Colombia. It has a very South American feel inside with the music booming, and the food was certainly authentic. I got the beans over seasoned rice n peas, half pulled pork and stewed chicken, and a mashed plaintains w/ butter. The portions are huggeee, you can really share this plate with two people. South American food seems to focus on the freshness and flavors of the meat and veges rather than being sauce/seasoning heavy, and it really came out in this meal. Columbia Heights - we once had a love affair, and then all this development happened. This spot is past the Target/Bestbuy/Complex Parking - in Columbia Heights? Not unless you're a local. Though there is paid parking as part of the development. Decor/Ambiance/Clientele - It reminds me of the Dominican spots in Bushwick. A lot of tables, a steam table for the food, and a little bit of Island memories on the wall. The spot is lively. They were playing dominoes in the front. You could even get a cell phone in the corner. Lots of Spanish being spoke, and the staff is straight from the DR. Knowing Spanish helps. Service - This is not one of those corporate places with 2 weeks of training, signage, and deftly designed customer flow. It's very BK in that regard. It's very cafeteria style, and not buffet style. So like any cafeteria You walk in. Your buddy might grab a table. You walk over to the right side steam table and you make your way left. The dishes aren't labeled, and If you don't know DR food just ask. But if you're generally unfamiliar with food from the Caribbean/Latin America, ask better questions. Like does the Breadfruit actually taste like Bread. (it doesn't) At the end of the line, you get a drink and you pay. Then you sit down. But what if you want Mofongo? As a Jamaican, for the most part we have pretty much all the same dishes just spiced differently. Add olives and olive oil to most Jamaican dishes, and they become "Spanish" (Cuban, Boricua, Dominican). The British influence on Jamaica is what you don't see too much of in "Spanish" food. Had the Mofongo with camarones. I'm just happy that I could have Mofongo with Camarones. Mofongo - For my Africans, it's like Fufu made with green plantains. For my Non-Africans, it's like taking very green and unsweet bananas (plantains), frying them or boiling them, and then mashing them down with olive oil and garlic. The mash is then rolled into balls or formed into a column. There's an African diaspora history lesson here, but you should google that. This is the kind of meal that you eat before hard day's work to sustain you, or after a hard day's work to rebuild you. But after consuming mofongo, you will be laid out like Thanksgiving. As for this mofongo, I've definitely had better. Not that this was bad, but I was happier at the idea of eating mofongo than actually eating this mofongo. Perhaps I should have gotten the chicarrones not the shrimp, but I felt like it needed something more. Check it out if your in the area, or your just fiending for DR food. read more

Los Hermanos is truly a D.C. Dominican gem. Don't be fooled by its appearance because the contents it holds will surprise you! It is extremely casual dining meets fast-food-but-not-really-fast-food. You line up in queue to fill your plate, pay, and enjoy at your own discretion. Making your Dominican dish: 1. Rice - hands down, get the yellow rice with pigeon peas and spices. Why would you choose any other kind of rice? 2. Meat - the slow-cooked chicken was super succulent & tender. The juice was probably the highlight of the dish! They pour it over your rice and WOWZA, mix it well to saturate your rice because that stuff is golden. The happy dance was done with every bite. 3. Side - fried plantain is like a dessert within your meal. You've sweet and savory all in one. They ran out of passion fruit drink that day so I went with mango instead. It was very creamy but overly sweet. I'd pass on this but if you have a high sugar tolerance and mango is your jam, why not? Overall, dining at Los Hermanos is equivalent to being invited into one of your neighbor's homes for a full and satiated meal. Everyone is friendly and welcoming. My girlfriend wanted to take my tastebuds on a Dominican adventure, and when I removed the blindfold, I found myself at Los Hermanos. I liked it immediately because the name reminded me of Los Pollos Hermanos from Breaking Bad. Alas, there was no Gus Fring...just piles and piles of Dominican deliciousness. I was very overwhelmed by the ordering process, so I relinquished all decision-making authority and put myself at my girlfriend's mercy. In less than one minute, we were holding a giant plate of yellow rice and peas, curry beef, fried sweet plantains, yuca, and pernil. There was so much amazing-looking food to choose from. I witnessed the sorrow in my girlfiend's eyes as she passed on the mofongo and tostones. Fortunately, too much more gluttony and we would've had to pay extra for an Uber XL to get home. I was skeptical to try this place since it is next to all of the delicious choices in Columbia Heights and I couldn't find a legit menu that made me want to come in. Finally I gave in an came in to this place. Best decision ever. So this restaurant is a buffet style. Every day, the family cooks up their home made recipe or whatever they choose that day. However, this is difficult for the hungry consumer like me because it's always a battle as to which two entrees I want to get. You get two sides and two entrees. What do I always get? I always get the chicharron and the chicken stew. These two are so close to my favorite Filipino dishes that it is not hard to pick. The chicharron is next to the register. You get to pick which one you get. Pick it, put in the paper bag, give it to them, they chop it up and then heat it up for you. Another recommendation is the fried fish filet. It is usually Tilapia, but as for the sauce. They will whip up a fresh, warm coconut sauce for you. You're welcome! As far as the customer service, it is great! If you do not know what a dish is, just ask! They brothers are all nice and you can totally feel the family love that goes in to the food and service at this place. I always feel welcome. Came here after just driving around looking for a nice place to eat.. I honestly forgot all about Yelp.. Sorry Yelpers Food was a great quality and really Dominican. Got to chat with the brothers "Los Hermanos" that own the joint and these ppl are very humble and accomodating. They told me all about their staff and how each and one of them are really contributing to their real Dominican authentic seasoning and cuisine. They're crispy, well seasoned, fatty, and indulgent. The only bad thing is that sometimes the skin is a little too hard. Nevertheless, it's amazing. When you need to load up on carbs, protein, and fat for not that much, this is the place for you! When in doubt, beef, shredded pork, or the chicken. But to be honest, all their meats are excellent! For fans of the crispy pork skin, get some chicharrones and enjoy your excellent life decision. The sides are somewhat bland. My hubby gets oxtail, goat or beef stew. He loves their stews. My husband enjoys their mondongo. Their mofongo is really good. After doing some research and reading plenty of reviews, I decided to make my way to Los Hermanos. The location is convenient, only a few blocks away from the Columbia Heights metro station. I knew from the reviews that it was cafeteria style serving, which is fine by me. I also read in the reviews that the food is cheap and a "bang for your buck." Maybe it's just me, but I paid more than $23.00 for one to go plate with rice and beans, a chicken dish and a pork dish and for some Chicharrones. Now one review I saw said they paid $25.00 for food and drinks for two people. I didnt even get anything to drink yet paid almost as much as that. It's funny because I even asked about the pricing as I was choosing what I wanted but didn't get an answer to my question. Also, I didn't receive a receipt, so really its as if I was just told any random price. I'd recommend clarifying pricing as you choose what items you're getting. As for the food's taste; The pulled pork dish that I had, I think it's the pernil, was pretty okay. The chicharrones were really good! I'd get the chicharrones again (after clarifying the pricing), but that's probably the only reason I would return. I also read from the reviews that the Green sauce is good, but I was told they didn't have anymore (though it was around 2:30 in the afternoon), and when I asked for any type of spicy sauce I was told there was none. Came here for a birthday dinner with a bunch of friends. Clean, laid back atmosphere with a friendly and accommodating staff. Lots of options to choose from and everything I tried was really tasty! I think the only drawback was not knowing what certain items were and the language barrier difficulties in trying to ask. I basically just copied what the person in front of me ordered and that was a safe bet! Rice and beans (called rice and peas), with extra sauce, stewed beef, and plantains. I have long been deprived of good homemade Dominican food. (No thanks to a serious lack of Dominican restaurants around the area, hello?!) Hungrily, I strolled in and was greeted with Bachata softly playing in the background, a group of men playing dominos in a side room, and a friendly face behind the counter. I immediately zoned in on the arroz con gandules, which is a Dominican classic of rice with pigeon peas that is amazingly full of flavor and just plain delicious. I went with the stewed beef as my meat and this too was well marinated and flavorful. The only thing lacking was the vegetable side, but they're not known for their veggies so it wasn't a big deal to me. Note: Although they're known for the buffet they also have a menu that offers other staple foods. I have to mention that when I took my first bite, I felt a smile creep up as I was chewing. I was really happy about the sweet stuff. There was refreshing passion fruit juice and the fried plantains were really good. On the other hand, the mains were pretty a-ok. The pork option with rice was fine. I tried some of the orange cake they had and was intrigued by the taste (my friend and I had a good time trying to figure out exactly what spices had been baked in) but wasn't really impressed. All in all, my 8 friends and I had what seemed like food that could be cooked at home; which seems to be the MO of the place. While I wasn't impressed by the food, I was very happy with the wonderful feeling of eating at home with loved ones. You're served generous helpings of food on colorful, mismatched plates in a room that is probably warmer than it should be because the AC is too low, and there are too many bodies. Amazing food, amazing value. I was honestly shocked at how generous the portions were. One plate is $12 and loaded with rice, beans, a choice of side, and a choice of meat. My boyfriend got fried plantains as a side and pulled pork for the meat, I got got mashed plantains and salted cod stew. The pulled pork was super juicy and tender, I would definitely get again. The salted cod stew was tomato based with pieces of cod and vegetables. The mashed plantains were delicious once I added a generous amount of hot sauce to it. Tbh, the hot sauce they provide elevated all of the food we got. My only disappointment was they brought out a lot of new, fresh dishes after we had purchased our food. I ordered the Chicarron de Pollo with dirty rice and plantains. All of it was amazing, the chicken was fall off the bone moist. The chicken was perfectly seasoned and cooked well and they aren't shy with portions they give. The rice is the true test in any Dominican restaurant, if the rice is bad the restaurant is bad, the rice at Los Hermanos was just as good as the chicken, perfectly cooked, good mix of beans and vegetables in the rice and great flavor. Best thing about Los Hermanos is the prices, I got a huge plate of rice and chicken with a soda for 11 dollars, you can't beat the service, the prices or the food. Okay this is as close to a must-eat as there is in the world of bargain, casual dining. There is nothing fancy about eating at Los Hermanos - it actually feels more like a cafeteria than a restaurant - but the food was amazing. No frills, get it done. The normal way to order here is to get a platter, which consists of a rice, a side, and a meat. If you have no idea what you want (which was me when I went), they are happy to help you pick things. I wouldn't be too concerned though, because it was all incredible. I got the rice and beans, fried plantains, and a half chicken half pulled pork combo (they also gave me a piece of rib to try just because). All of the meats were incredibly tender and juicy, bursting with flavor but not overwhelmingly salty. They also poured some of the meat sauce over the rice, which on its own would have been good but with the extra sauce went next level. My friends and I debated about which meat was our favorite, which essentially says that we were just arguing personal preference because they were all cooked so well. We ended up paying $14 for the platter, which I think could have easily went for two meals based on the volume of food. I don't know how things are priced there because I didn't see a menu, but I would happily pay the same amount again. I must have caught them on a bad day because what I got off the hot bar was straight mediocre. The chicharrones I desperately wanted and traveled from my nice suburban abode just to get were not there, and if I would have arrived 10 minutes earlier the juicy pulled pork would not have been there. Sides were uninteresting and bland even, and there was no mofongo or tostones in sight (maybe you have to special order it?) No menu or menu board in sight. Hmm somehow I can't find the 5 star review I once gave this restaurant. At the time I had what I always order fried fish, rice with gandules, potato salad and the coconut sauce which is to die for. I've had this exact meal like 5 times and each time it was delicious. Today I ordered it for lunch and the food came lukewarm and obviously stale- dry rice, soggy fish . I'm guessing I got leftovers from the night before. A real disappointment so got to deduct stars from 5 to 3. read more

Coming from NYC and Jersey City, I've had my fair share of great Dominican food and this place is up there. I go to Los Hermanos every time I am homesick and miss Hispanic food. The food here is authentic and reminds me of my best friend's mother's home cooking. Food is served cafeteria style so you can see what your choices are. The meats are all very tender and so well seasoned. Rice is soft and fluffy (not what you'd get out of a Goya box). Plantanos are sweet and delicious. A huge pro for me is that everything is under $12! Huge servings of amazing food with great prices. I reccomend this place to all my friends! read more

The food here really is packed with flavor and for the price, it just can't be beat. This place really is a gem. I discovered Los Hermanos during my senior year of college and after reading Yelp reviews I knew I had to try it before I left DC. You line up and the staff is helpful in explaining all of the offerings. My friend ordered the plantain chips which I tried -- delicious. You get an incredible amount of food as well. There are Parking decks in the area, otherwise I feel street parking is hard to come by and metro/uber is a good way to get here. Although I'm not in DC anymore, I will be sure to make a stop back here when I'm back in town for a feel good, affordable and overall delicious meal. read more

My favorite Dominican spot of all time! Would go back to DC just for this place! Haven't found a better place, even living in Miami now.

I wanted to love this place but as a NYC transplant to DC my standards on Dominican food are quite high so this was just ok for me. I ordered cheese mofongo with a guanabana milkshake. The milkshake was delicious and the mofongo was good in terms of taste but it was a bit dry. My boyfriend had shrimp and tostones which I felt was a bit overpriced but his tostones were better than my mofongo. I would still come back maybe for breakfast for some mangu con queso frito as the customer service was good and I miss being around Dominicans! read more
