It felt so good to feel welcomed and appreciated in Los Hermanos. The Dominican love for people and life shows of in great hospitality, their smiles and great food. Columbia Height neighborhood has changed a lot in past 20 years and it is not worth driving and looking for tiny parking options. That neighborhood was made for walking and metro. I could have smell Los Hermanos from a half mile away (where I parked) and it just got better when I got to see how many great options they have inside. At the end I had a chicken soup and beef stew with mixed rice. The beef stew was poured over my rice and everything was one nice symphony of texture and taste. It was pleasingly salty and soft. The chicken soup reminded me that America is too small and that Dominican chicken soup could have passed for any good chicken soup in the World, if you haven't seen the Dominican based vegetables (yes - plantain is a vegetable according to Google). I wish they had a beer - that would have been a truly perfect meal. I was happy to support small Dominican-American business and would always drop by again to try other options like pork. read more

I luckily discovered Los Hermanos yesterday on my way home from shopping. I'm glad I trusted my instincts and decided to dine alone, because I may have found my new favorite place! I ate there yesterday. I ordered food to go today so my wife could try it. And as I am writing this review, all I can think of is going there again for lunch tomorrow. The place as a whole has a very chill vibe. The tables are set together, cafeteria-style. It took me a while to figure it out as I was dining alone. The food is also presented cafeteria-style. You approach and just point at what you want to eat. Though it seems pretty straightforward, the wide range of options can prove intimidating. Not to worry though, their staff is very friendly and patient. They described each dish I asked about and even provided suggestions. I finally ordered rice with beans on top, stewed pig's feet, and the pulled pork. I wish I knew the food's proper names but the language barrier was too difficult for me to overcome. It's rare that you find delicious food at such a low cost and outrageous portions. That's certainly the case here. I always make it a point to finish everything on my plate because, to me, it shows respect and lets them know you enjoyed their food. Well, that almost killed me. Their portions were so big, by the time I finished eating I was tempted to take a nap right there since I found it so difficult to move. As mentioned, I just ordered food to go the next day so I could eat what I could and save the rest for my wife. Yes, it's almost enough for 2 meals--at least for asian man that I am. I highly recommend their rice and beans. As someone who grew up eating rice every day, I can honestly say this is the best rice dish you can have in DC. Each bite explodes with flavor and is always consistently moist. Also, make sure to order the pulled pork. I've been eating that for 2 days now and will order it again tomorrow. Love this place! I am from New York City, and I'm also Dominican, so I've had a lot of great Dominican food. Heck! I only cook Dominican food! But I was too lazy to cook the other day, so I searched for a Dominican spot, cause that's like all I eat. Dominican food lol. Although I love the DMV area, it lacks a lot of good Caribbean food, and so I was afraid that even a Caribbean spot wouldn't have that flavor. But this place sure does. Taste like all the spots I've been to in NYC. The rice doesn't taste like it's made from those Goya boxes, the plátanos are fried to perfection, y el carne de res was spot on. Also, everything I got was 12 bucks! NYC can't beat that price!! So I will def. be coming back here :]. Authenticity: It's hard to find a family-run, mom and pop shop in DC that simply serves authentic food. This place is definitely a gem in DC. My friend and I were walking around to find a good savoury eat in Columbia Heights area and we stumbled on this very homey and local Dominican eatery. The food was absolutely tasty!! It's cater style so we got rice, a side plus two meet. Plantain on the side, chicken and pork for the meat. The meat was tender juicy. Chicken was fall of the bone. And Los Hermanos pollo guisao (stew chicken) and Moro (yellow rice mixed with red beans) tasted just like home. The service was fast, food was fresh BUT I will admit it was a bit pricey. But I understand supply and demand, so I don't really have an issue paying extra for that feeling of home. Huge portions and a lot of options. This is not vegetarian friendly cuisine, so don't expect to come here and find a ton of veggie/vegan/gluten free options. But if you're in the mood for your moms cooking or have a fond appreciation of Hispanic culture, then I'd recommend making a trip here. read more

Very authentic, hole in the wall place for Dominican food in Columbia Heights. Came here after hearing my friend rave about it, and he was right. Decor is virtually nonexistent. There are tables and that's pretty much it. If they didn't have a sign outside I wouldn't know where it was! Staff is extremely friendly and helpful, though. Food is served cafeteria style. I got rice, pulled pork, and plantains. And the huge plate of food plus a soda was $10. AND I went back to get extra plantains without having to pay more money -- score! The plantains were perfectly cooked, the pork literally melted in your mouth, and the rice was taken to the next level with all of the spices and add-ins. Only complaint is that generally I am not a fan of cafeteria style restaurants, as I don't like my food sitting out. The pork and plantains were hot, but my rice was lukewarm. read more

Eater directed me to Bombay Street Food, but the 30-minute wait convinced me otherwise. With my stomach grumbling, I ambled further down Park Street in search of a place with quick service and a unique experience. That place turned out to be Los Hermanos, which offered cafeteria service (no waiting for an order!) and a very short line. The patronage of the restaurant was low enough (for a Friday night), to make me a bit skeptical, at first. But the tantalizing smells convinced me otherwise. And luckily so, because I ended up with a humungous platter of chicken, plaintains, rice and beans, all for only 12$ (no tip needed!). The chicken boasted a meaty umami taste that seeped through the gravy into the rice. The stars of the show, however, were the beans: no other Carribean or Latin American restaurant I've been visited has cooked beans with such an incredibly rich and vibrant flavor. Sadly, my permanent residence is some 2200 miles away, in a city lacking in Dominican restaurants. I will make sure to return, however, on my next trip to Washington. read more

The food and service here is excellent! For the food, not only is everything seasoned and tasty, but you get very large portions. Additionally, service is very fast, and you get to see your food before you order it. As an added bonus, all this can be had for what is considered dirt cheap prices when compared to the standard DC restaurant. They serve a wide selection of choices cafeteria style, and you can order a lunch plate or a la carte. While the pork belly was ok, we prefer a fattier version with crispt skin. Headed for this place straight after arriving in DC on a work trip. I think I had first heard of this place on some food blog, and I was pleased to find that the hype of this place was appropriate. If you don't want to be bothered with the pretense of hip food, this cafeteria-style joint is the perfect place for you. For ~$7 you'll get a huge portion of food consisting of meat, rice, and some sides. I think I went with plaintains as my side and chicken drumsticks and shredded beef as my meats. Came here with Tina S. and another friend on her farewell-to-DC night out, as this was her fav spot for a good meal. Los Hermanos did not disappoint! I was a little confused when I arrived because there are no menus and I wasn't sure how to get from point A (hungry) to point B (full plate in hand), so I just followed her lead. Go up to the counter and old-school-cafeteria style, just point at what you want. Voila - an enormous plate of food will magically appear! The meat is oh-so-tender, the plantains are sweet and divine (seriously, I could've eaten an entire plate of just those plantains), beans and rice hit the spot. I wasn't a fan of the stringy yuca but I know others are huge lovers of this starchy root. If you don't speak Spanish you might have trouble communicating with some of the staff. I ordered a drink that looked promising but ended up being rather gross. But everything else was AWESOME! Full plate, full tummy. I had no idea how I was going to finish my plate of food but it was so good I couldn't help but devour it. Yum! A great spot for a solid meal at an unbeatable price. read more

So apparently a lot of restaurants in Columbia Heights are closed on Tuesdays! After trying unsuccessfully to go to 3 other places we found ourselves in Los Hermanos. The food is served cafeteria style (e.g. hot bar) and you build a platter with a choice or rice, protein and side. I got the rice and beans, stewed chicken and steamed yucca. The portions were very generous and it was all perfect for a chilly fall day. A few things to note: the rice was pretty dry (obviously had been sitting out for a while) and my friend tried to order a few different proteins but they were out of them by 7 pm. It's not the warmest place to stay and eat, but there was a constant flow of people stopping by to pickup dinner on their way home. Can easily see it being a great post-work stop to grab food if you live nearby. read more

I pass it every day on my way home from work and it's hard to avoid the temptation to spend all my money there (although the prices are great so I'm not sure I could if I tried). The brothers who run the restaurant are extremely friendly, after my first couple times coming here six years ago, they recognized me and always chatted as I was getting my food. (They also recently opened a second restaurant in NE - Mecho's Dominican Kitchen - that I am eager to visit, although I'm sure it is also great). I strongly recommend the pulled pork. What happened??!! Finally made it out for my second trip after months of dreaming about that yummy, yummy food. Arrived around 3pm and the place was packed. I was about the 6th person in line, but I didn't mind waiting. Watched as the folks in front of me made their selections, eager for my turn. Finally got to the front of the line, asked for 2 plates to go and an order of Mofongo to go. She told me it would take about 20 minutes, maybe longer, and the way she said it was like she was deterring me from ordering it, telling me how busy the kitchen was, etc. So I passed, which she was 100% fine with, but I was super disappointed. Okay fine. Started my orders with rice and asked for the sides of plantains and she literally put 2 pieces in each of my to-go boxes. There were only about 4-5 pieces left in the warming dish, but she could have gone to the back and got more, especially after seeing the 5 people in front of me get portions with up to 8 pieces worth. But again, she acted like the kitchen was so busy and wasn't willing to even check for me. So I ended up getting 4 pieces on one plate and steamed veggies for the other plate instead. That was my 2nd disappointment. Ordered the ox tail for one dish and the goat curry for the other, and a fried fish separately. When I got to the register, the lady checking me out opened each container and noticed that my ox tail order portion was super small and full of bones so offered to get me a few more pieces of meat, which was super nice of her considering how the other lady was treating me. I wish she was the one who made my plates because she was a lot more fair with the portions for the people in front of me than the lady who helped me. Anyway... Paid and drove home, excited to devour my food, only to be super disappointed! The food was lacking in flavor and the meat in both dishes tasted old! Like it has been sitting out, warming all day. Even the sauce was thin and watery looking. The first time I got the ox tail, the sauce was thick and rich and full of flavor, and the meat was on the bone and just tender and delicious. This time, the meat was 99% off the bone and just gross. The goat curry was also about 90% bones, where we had to literally gnaw the meat off just to get anything. And again, the meat tasted old, lacked flavor and was a huge disappointment. The rice was fine, the 4 plantains I got were average and the fish was pretty good (though could've used a little more seasoning as well). I don't know what happened because the first time I ate here it was delicious. So good that I craved it. This time, the quality and flavor was below average and again, a huge let down. I will not be back. It takes me 30 minutes to get there from my house and after yesterday's meal, I wouldn't eat it again even if it were 5 minutes away. 2 stars because the rice, fish weren't terrible and the nice lady at the register. read more

Food is cheap and delicious , I'm only giving it three stars because I did not enjoy the mofongo I had on my first visit but I'm Puerto Rican so my expectations may have been high. On my second visit platanos/Maduro tasted like the ones that you get at the frozen section of the supermarket. It was probably an off day for them , because those did not look like the ones in the pictures from the other reviews . If you've ever wondered what a Dominican restaurant is like but haven't had the opportunity to go to one like myself, consider Los Hermanos as your destination. With its humble storefront, homey atmosphere, and lack of a menu above the serving line, you get a sense of authenticity as soon as you walk in. The serving staff was very friendly and patient as they helped my boyfriend and I with our order. Small gestures, like the server letting me pick the part of the chicken I wanted and asking me if I wanted to add some of the meat broth on top of my food, stood out to me as excellent customer service. You get to choose a base, a side, and then one full or two half meat combinations. I got rice with peas, braised pork, roasted chicken leg and mashed plantains (mangú). My boyfriend got the rice with beans, yucca, beef stew, and the pulled pork. The braised pork was very well cooked and in combination with their hot sauce (that is made specifically for the restaurant and we found out was in limited supply for the time being since their supplier had gone back to DR!). The mangú had a great texture that paired well with the other foods on my plate. The chicken was deliciously crispy on the outside, but there wasn't as much meat as I would have liked. My boyfriend's pulled pork was noticeably salty, but he said his meat stew was outrageously good and cooked so well that the beef melted in his mouth. We also ordered a side of tostones (twice-fried plantains) that came out very hot and fresh. They come out unseasoned and without sauce, so we used the hot sauce to add some flavor to it. The portions were large and definitely worth the price. We both got two meals out of it, and both meals heated up well a day or two after. Overall, this is a place you should visit if you ever want Caribbean food in DC! read more
